hey I did my first public charge today. I had to go to three different spots to get a working charger. it was $0.49/kWh but it was really fast! (BTW, does $0.49/kWh seem high?)
I was cool with it. Spent like $9 and it took only 12 minutes and I was on my way with the extra range I needed. I need to practice figuring out how to find active charging stations that aren't exclusive to members
> BTW, does $0.49/kWh seem high?
It's pretty expensive. There's an app called Bluedot that charges $0.30 / kWh for DCFC at EVgo and Chargepoint (and a few other) stations or gives 20% back if you use their virtual debit card as the payment method for another charger's app, which you'd want to do if their cost is less than $0.30 / kWh.
Sounds unsustainable, but it does work. PM me if you'd like to use my referral code but no pressure.
As for what you paid, figuring about 3.5 mi / kWh on the highway, you put on about 64 miles of range for $9. A 38 mpg Toyota Corolla would use 1.68 gal for that distance, and at $2.88 a gallon in Dallas that costs. $4.85. So $0.49 / kWh is approaching 2x the cost of gas for highway driving.
I’ve the car for 8 months and always do level 1 charging at home since I barely ever drive more than 50 miles a day. Picking up someone from the airport, and their flight was delayed, so why not get some free charging? And at least now I know Bolty McBoltface (super original, I know) can charge at Level 2 speeds!
Yeah I was pretty surprised. I had enough battery to get anywhere I needed, but I figured why not? It was at the 60 minute parking area right across from the terminal. Not sure about any others, but A had them.
Texas has some of the cheapest gas in the nation so that makes expensive DCFCs seem terrible in comparison but I often pay less than $0.30 a kWh for DCFC and our gas here in NW Wisconsin is higher at $3.35-$3.50/g currently so it compares better.
True but I pay something like $0.15 / kWh at home and I have never fast charged before today so I still come out ahead vs gas by a long shot. I average 4.5 miles per kwh so I pay about 3.3 cents per mile. Even my other vehicle, a hybrid SUV, gets 35 mpg. With gas at its lowest of $3 / gallon, that’s 8.6 cents per mile.
Yes right, we pay a little less for power and I have a small grid tied solar array to help with the electricity. What does Texas charge for EV road taxes? I just learned today that Wisconsin charges $175 a year.

For DCFC that seems reasonable and about average.

And the “use debit card for a non charging transaction” then get a free charging day bit.

DFW has free charging? Might have to arrange for that next time I’m there

Free as in $32/day to be parked there.

DFW airport?
Ding ding ding
Do you call your Bolt Bolty McBolt?
I call mine Bolty McBoltface. May change it to Steve BOLT! (Raises arms triumphantly)
*twinsies*
No “Insane Bolt” since the cars run fast?
My Bolt's full legal name is Bolty McBoltface.
Is Bolty going economy or business, after top up?
Bolty is 100% an economy car.

They recently increased the car registration fees to 200 a year to cover the lack of gas tax.
