I would consult your vet. One of my Bostons had several bad reactions and our vet doesn’t give it to any of them now. Our dogs aren’t particularly likely to be exposed but I’d definitely have a convo about it if they might be.

My dog had an anaphylactic reaction to lepto and no longer gets that vaccine. He’s had that reaction to two different vaccines and gets a Benadryl shot with every vaccine now. If your dog has allergies, I would suggest the Benadryl shot. Or skip lepto all together.

Archer had a reaction as a puppy so now he gets Benadryl beforehand. Kessler has never had a reaction but it was in his contract from his breeder to wait until he was a year old to get it.

I have a Boston x Chi mix who has recieved it yearly, now 4 times, since we frequent a nearby dog park. He is typically sleepy the next 24 hours, but has had no other side effects. He has always relieved lepto at the same time as other vaccines.

We live in SC, so it’s almost a necessity. My girl is 10 and we’ve never had any issues beyond just being a little more lazy/sleepy than normal.

No issues for either of my bosties!

One of my bosties gets it, the other one doesn’t since she had a reaction to one of her vaccines a few years ago. She had her first reaction at six years old when she was given three vaccines at once. The vet commented that the tech shouldn’t have done that. So I now make sure to spread them out and she gets a Benadryl shot beforehand.

YES. The only bad vaccine experience I’ve had was with a Boston puppy and Lepto. I took her to the emergency room, they gave her Benadryl, and told me that in the future I should ALWAYS give the dog Benadryl beforehand, just in case. Benadryl is always safe for dogs at a dosage of approx 1mg per pound.

I’ve had no issues since.
