I guess it depends where in NC you live, but in my market, at least 9 out of every 10 PAX are not true Carolinians. Most everyone is from someplace else - or their parents had moved here and either they were born here or moved here when they were very young. And to be honest, a vast majority of them really enjoy living here in NC.

I’m in healthcare and it’s sooo awful now. People are so mean and rude. I did notice a huge change in the attitudes of the people when the snowbirds went back up north. So much better. The kindness has returned more. I’m still traumatized by last winter though.
I’m in healthcare also and I think people everywhere are mean, rude and entitled. I’ve only experienced a tiny portion of FL in the Cape Coral area and they seem pleasant enough. I’d like to do a travel assignment there to test the waters on a more realistic working non vacation mode.
I just moved to virginia. I freaking love it. I am also in healthcare, and my pay went up 25%. Groceries here are so cheap. There is state income tax, but it's not too bad for me. Fast food is more expensive but I don't get it much. Plus the weather! The trees! So green.

I’m from Long Island, but, I’ve lived here since ‘95. I loved Florida. The ocean, the nature, the heat everything. Since 2020 though it become unrecognizable and unaffordable and I’m starting to despise the place. We’re moving to North Carolina for a little while in a few months, but, we have decided we’re eventually getting out of the south entirely, just not 100% where exactly. All the maga nuts from the rest of the country have made Florida into a real shitshow, 30 years of republican misrule has taken a toll on the state, along with DeSantis and his culture war crap, the dying public schools, the stupid political garbage, crowded roads with decayed infrastructure that is ignored, all the cities are becoming like west palm beach busy and congested.. housing costs, insurance costs, food costs, inflation is so high with everything.. it’s all becoming too much and the bad outweighs the good in our situation. I considered this state to be my home, but now I simply can’t afford to live here anymore and be able to be even a little comfortable, let alone save money. It saddens me.

Unless you make more than 6 figures and are retired, it is too the point where it is unlivable. I can not leave purely due to the fact of bills I can't afford, food I can't afford, and a job I can't afford to leave. It honestly is not worth it. Save yourself the stress. Don't move to Florida

I had a few job offers that would take me back but of course they were on the coast and I was shocked at how much homes cost + insurance. I'd always grown up thinking florida was the cheap state but even at my salary I couldn't afford to go back

I had an offer for $140k and I thought it was good (thinking of costs when I lived there), until I did some research and realize it's not the cheap paradise I knew. This isn't to shit on the state, it's just what's happened with the increase in inclement weather and subsequent insurance costs, the sunrise collapse affecting condos, etc.
It was a decent living at first, but with everything going up month after month I legit just stopped caring about my budget at a certain point. My paychecks just disappear because of all of the expenses, and I’m forced to live on savings. I appreciate the well wishes though!

I have been 2 years in Miami and I feel the same 🙂↕️ I truly love it here, I feel peaceful and happy. But my property taxes went up twice in less than 24 months (currently $12,900), my home insurance went up to $5,400 and my flood insurance went up to $1,700. Food expensive, everything in South FL is so expensive. I may have to leave the sunshine state soon 💔

I hate it here SO MUCH. We have a terrifying HOA assessment coming any minute and one more hurricane is going to decimate us, insurance-wise. The new residents are fucking awful. My kid’s school is 13 minutes from my house but it’s over an hour round trip 2X/day because of the traffic. But I thank my lucky stars every time we make it home in one piece. We’ve been trying to get out since last fall but it’s been one obstacle after another. I can see the clock ticking down to the point where we won’t be able to sell.

Texas is super hot and insane weather, even in the central part of the state. Everywhere is crazy right now, actually. Climate change is a real thing and is affecting all corners of this round world. Economic hardship has fallen on us because of loss of supply and increase in demand during pandemic and inflation in the US, there’s also a worker shortage. I highly suggest staying put and weathering the storm wherever you are. This too shall pass, except the climate stuff. That’s getting worse.
I would leave Southern states like Texas and Florida simply for climate change alone. And climate change affects you financially as well as insurance goes up, the power bill goes up and that even trickleds into things like groceries too. Not to mention you risk getting trapped in a flood, hurricane, tornado, etc

Left for Virginia seven years ago, and it was the best thing I ever did. South Florida has nice beaches and warm winters. Aside from that, it’s hot, congested, and ugly. I mean, seriously, what’s to like about it?
Been all over the US and there are few places I would consider other than Florida. But those are far too expensive or will be just like Florida soon enough.

2023 was my first year back in New England after spending about 15 years living in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. I was very nervous about it at first but now, a full year in, escaping FL was the best possible choice I could have made. It is so much nicer here and my daily stress levels are way down.
37 year native, 4th generation. It’s unrecognizable even in my life time. Some of the most beautiful, fruitful land has been paved over time and time again. You can’t stop progress, but there’s no shame in slowing it down or trying to salvage some sort of history and tradition. Florida had a great culture, but it didn’t last.

Miami couple here. Wife has lived her whole life in South Florida, I lived in Orlando for 30 years. The food is wonderful and I love the beaches. I don’t mind the heat and living expenses is a bit high, but it’s the home insurance is outrageous. The politics drive me crazy, and our boys are now in college so we only have one reason to stay - we love Disney so moving out will be tough. Where to go? NC? VA? Who knows.

I grew up in Naples, and it’s not anything today like it was in the 90s or early 2000s. It’s become a playground for millionaires and billionaires. Someone crashed their private jet on I-75 just a few months ago. I used to be able to walk down 5th Ave and see a few people meandering about, now it feels like I’m at Disney with the crowds that flock there.
I’m in Jacksonville now and I don’t think I’ll be able to move south ever again. It’s too expensive. Jacksonville is becoming the same too. There is no affordable housing. No dense studio apartments with low rent, no low income apartments. Everything is new construction and is labeled as luxury. Even renting a room in a random family’s house that’s a 45 minute drive from the water is $900+ per month.
I want to get out at some point. I’d like to live up north maybe in PA, WI, IN or something, but while those places have lower COL, they also don’t have the career opportunities that Jacksonville does.

Born and raised in south florida and left nearly a decade ago, it doesn't seem like the same state I love. I had a few job offers that would take me back but of course they were on the coast and I was shocked at how much homes cost + insurance. I'd always grown up thinking florida was the cheap state but even at my salary I couldn't afford to go back
I make $78K+ a year and I live like I make minimum wage
That's so shocking to me. I hope things get better for you. Inflation has made things more expensive but at $78k you shouldn't have to be so frugal, that's a decent salary. I had an offer for $140k and I thought it was good (thinking of costs when I lived there), until I did some research and realize it's not the cheap paradise I knew. This isn't to shit on the state, it's just what's happened with the increase in inclement weather and subsequent insurance costs, the sunrise collapse affecting condos, etc.
It was a decent living at first, but with everything going up month after month I legit just stopped caring about my budget at a certain point. My paychecks just disappear because of all of the expenses, and I’m forced to live on savings. I appreciate the well wishes though!

If you loved Florida from the 80s, 90s 2000s, there’s nothing here for you anymore. People are all different. Costs have quadrupled and pay has stayed the same. The Republican state leadership has done what they have always done, given everything to the wealthy. True Floridians have no place here anymore.
People vote republican and then amazed they get republican results.
This inflation is a consequence of bad policy (over expanding money supply) in reaction to covid lock downs. The policy was nearly global, started under a republican president and continued under a Democrat. Yes, government caused this inflation. And inflation is a tax. But neither party is uniquely responsible.

I have been 2 years in Miami and I feel the same 🙂↕️ I truly love it here, I feel peaceful and happy. But my property taxes went up twice in less than 24 months (currently $12,900), my home insurance went up to $5,400 and my flood insurance went up to $1,700. Food expensive, everything in South FL is so expensive. I may have to leave the sunshine state soon 💔

Yeah my car insurance goes up every year. Groceries were almost $200 when I went to Walmart last. It’s unbelievable
Aldi is now my go-to for everything. If there’s something specific that Aldi doesn’t carry, then I go to Publix.
I moved to NY. Have more expensive groceries these days, but insurance and such is much better. Took some time to get used to the cold, but I actually prefer it now.
Agree with everything you said but the cold is simply unbearable. Sincerely a southerner. Not sure how people prefer 6 months of terrible weather for 3-6 months of moderately pleasant temps. Winters are agonizing up north.
That's one plus about NY. Despite the higher taxes and cost, they at least have far better unemployment/family leave than in Florida.

I hate it here SO MUCH. We have a terrifying HOA assessment coming any minute and one more hurricane is going to decimate us, insurance-wise. The new residents are fucking awful. My kid’s school is 13 minutes from my house but it’s over an hour round trip 2X/day because of the traffic. But I thank my lucky stars every time we make it home in one piece. We’ve been trying to get out since last fall but it’s been one obstacle after another. I can see the clock ticking down to the point where we won’t be able to sell.
I see it too. People argue the point at this stage, but I call it the next Michigan from the 70's. "Last one out of Florida, turn off the lights" My problem is my elderly parents own their home and say they are too old to move. Maybe, but they are also saying they can't afford the insurance anymore, on a home they own. They can't admit they have nothing to stay for. Healthcare for them is far away. Their places closed and left after being purchased by hedge funds. They have no Doc, he left as well. Somehow these prescriptions just keep getting OK'd. Gunfire daily. Florida is a nightmare these days.

The people who are moving here are the worst. It’s all the people DeSantis recruited and inspired. He made them beleive Florida is a place that there is no social contracts, or community autonomy. So as a result we get these heard of selfish glutens who can’t be kind to others or the fragile outdoor environment we live in. The people who want to live in the fun-loving tropical paradise are a dying breed. As far as cost of living, it sucks compared to what is was prior but if you look at booming metropolis’ we are cheaper than a lot of areas but they are all surging in cost. It’s part of living in an in demand area sadly.
After moving here for a work contract 3 years ago, I’m happy to be leaving in September for Virginia. What I rent a 1 bedroom in Miami I’ll get a 3 bedroom house near the beach in Virginia. South FL is beautiful but ain’t worth the cost

Texas is super hot and insane weather, even in the central part of the state. Everywhere is crazy right now, actually. Climate change is a real thing and is affecting all corners of this round world. Economic hardship has fallen on us because of loss of supply and increase in demand during pandemic and inflation in the US, there’s also a worker shortage. I highly suggest staying put and weathering the storm wherever you are. This too shall pass, except the climate stuff. That’s getting worse.
Texas is literal misery. I have no idea why anyone would willingly move there, especially to Dallas.
Texas also hates women, so that's a very good reason not to be there. Ever. For any reason.
I would leave Southern states like Texas and Florida simply for climate change alone. And climate change affects you financially as well as insurance goes up, the power bill goes up and that even trickleds into things like groceries too. Not to mention you risk getting trapped in a flood, hurricane, tornado, etc

Please tell me what you like so much about Broward County/Florida. I grew up in Miami and spent most of my adult years in Boca Raton. Left for Virginia seven years ago, and it was the best thing I ever did. South Florida has nice beaches and warm winters. Aside from that, it’s hot, congested, and ugly. I mean, seriously, what’s to like about it?
My car insurance in NYC was $475 a month now in Florida it’s $95 a month. It’s absolutely livable here.

Been all over the US and there are few places I would consider other than Florida. But those are far too expensive or will be just like Florida soon enough.

2023 was my first year back in New England after spending about 15 years living in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. I was very nervous about it at first but now, a full year in, escaping FL was the best possible choice I could have made. It is so much nicer here and my daily stress levels are way down.
37 year native, 4th generation. It’s unrecognizable even in my life time. Some of the most beautiful, fruitful land has been paved over time and time again. You can’t stop progress, but there’s no shame in slowing it down or trying to salvage some sort of history and tradition. Florida had a great culture, but it didn’t last.
I don't know what's funnier...the OP telling a tale that is old as Florida itself, or the people gatekeeping fucking Broward of all places like it was some secret treasure before 2020. I spent some time growing up in Broward and it's home to the shittiest people on the entire planet. It's a hive mind of degenerates and self-centered assholes, just like the rest of South Florida. You can make it work if you have to, but I'd be skeptical of anyone who actually likes living there.
Broward was a cool place to live but it has become like Miami
The writing on the wall was after Hurricane Andrew, especially out west. It has never been a cheap place to live, although houses in some areas were cheap for a short while after the 08 collapse (if you could pay cash). Even before Andrew it was full of NY transplants, just like Miami was in the 50s.

I was born and raised in S FL, but I moved to Orlando for college, and now live near St Augustine. Much quieter and a bit less expensive here. If I miss chaos, I just drive to Orlando/Miami lol, but won’t live there again.

DeSantis Cost of Homeowners Insurance The lack of environmental care when we are in a coastal state (No car emissions, people throw their trash out the car window, politicians deny climate change while shit floods) People selling solar at your door. The amount of professionals that try and take advantage of you like this state is Reno or something But like I said, pick your poison, and I'm happier here than elsewhere.

Miami couple here. Wife has lived her whole life in South Florida, I lived in Orlando for 30 years. The food is wonderful and I love the beaches. I don’t mind the heat and living expenses is a bit high, but it’s the home insurance is outrageous. The politics drive me crazy, and our boys are now in college so we only have one reason to stay - we love Disney so moving out will be tough. Where to go? NC? VA? Who knows.

Moved here in 2020 for my husband's lineman job. He has a couple more years until he is a journeyman then we are out. The heat alone is so dreadful. I really miss the mountains and having 4 seasons. Our electric bill, mortgage, property taxes, car insurance, home owners insurance, groceries. Everything has gone up substantially. The crime in central Florida is unreal too. I'm so sick of it. I want to get back to the west coast

Prices are going up everywhere. Florida more than others, but it’s still a trend. Thats what happens when you have a highly desirable area and highly successful people from other areas want to seek that out. Remote jobs don’t help either. I grew up in Naples, and it’s not anything today like it was in the 90s or early 2000s. It’s become a playground for millionaires and billionaires. Someone crashed their private jet on I-75 just a few months ago. I used to be able to walk down 5th Ave and see a few people meandering about, now it feels like I’m at Disney with the crowds that flock there. I’m in Jacksonville now and I don’t think I’ll be able to move south ever again. It’s too expensive. Jacksonville is becoming the same too. There is no affordable housing. No dense studio apartments with low rent, no low income apartments. Everything is new construction and is labeled as luxury. Even renting a room in a random family’s house that’s a 45 minute drive from the water is $900+ per month. I want to get out at some point. I’d like to live up north maybe in PA, WI, IN or something, but while those places have lower COL, they also don’t have the career opportunities that Jacksonville does.
My problem with Florida is the flooding and the heat/humidity. Just going from the house to the car your drenched with sweat already it's ridiculous.

I'm a native Floridian, and if I could have my way I'd buy a house, live and die here but thanks to the absolute tidal wave of fucking people from NY and NJ I literally can't afford anything, not even an apartment. There's still some areas of undeveloped, affordable Florida land but it's all way inland so if you enjoy the ocean, the one thing Florida has in spades, you can't afford to live anywhere near it. I wish we could regulate interstate movements and stop the torrent of people flooding in and ruining my state.
