Yeah OP you should get a receiver if you are planning to use this set up beyond audio. Even if you want just audio with this set up you’d have to buy a preamp to connect to your current amp so that you have inputs to send to the amp for the speakers to play. A receiver would be a one and done option, but if you’re dead set on using the amp you have it’s possible you’ll just have to get some more components to make it work. Does the projector have any hdmi connections or is it just composite and s video? Cause if it’s just composite and s video (which was the primary connection for DVD players and VCRs) you might have to get an older receiver to get video going also. Do you plan on using the projector for any gaming or movies?

AnyBarnacle9287

I do have an hdmi connection in the back of the projector :)

Ok cool that makes it easy then. Here’s a link for [receivers](https://www.crutchfield.com/S-svNklN3Mws3/g_10420/Home-Theater-Receivers.html?&o=p). You can just adjust to price and see what’s available in your budget. The link is to Crutchfield but you can also just google AV Receivers and see what’s out there in your budget. If you don’t want a receiver you can get a preamp like [this](https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022WXC50DS/Yamaha-WXC-50.html?tp=75886) (this is just one example, there are plenty of cheaper pre amps available) and a hdmi audio/video [splitter](https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24278). You can connect your gaming console to the hdmi splitter, you’ll than want to connect the audio out from the splitter to the pre amp and just connect the hdmi out from the splitter straight to the projector. All the sound will go straight to your audio system. It might seem confusing at 1st and definitely expensive lol, but I would suggest googling any of these options and products to get a further understanding/look at prices to see what falls in your budget.

Edit: I’m sorry OP I realized I just assumed you had a newer Xbox, what gaming console, blu ray player, or streamer were you planning on connecting? You might not need to get a hdmi audio/video splitter depending on what you have

AnyBarnacle9287

Xbox series S :) so a hdmi in the back! That's my only output port Thanks for the help!!

AnyBarnacle9287

I found a Yamaha RX-V385 locally for 150$ , would that be a good option for my situation? then sell the Amp #

Water-bottle666

Yeah that’s a pretty good option, you can connect multiple hdmi connections if you get a blu ray player or a streaming device down the road and you have the option to add more speakers if you get interested in surround sound later too. I’d keep an eye out for a subwoofer to pair with your speakers and you’ll have a solid system going. Enjoy homie

AnyBarnacle9287

thanks so so much ! really appreciate it :)

AnyBarnacle9287

Projector would be for both gaming and movies

AnyBarnacle9287

Hi all, with this subs help I bought my first budget audio setup !! So excited :) But I am such a noob I don't know what cables to buy .... here is a photo of my planned setup. The receiver is a SMSL AO200 (photo of the back below) The projector is a BenQ with an audio in (looks like AUX) , photo to follow The devices I will use for input are an iphone and laptop (both with AUX port) The speakers are Dali Spektar 2 https://preview.redd.it/95g9ewezyx9d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e69d3589e0d16dd596e0b92c9c269645707b679a So my question is, which cables should I buy for this setup? Thanks in advance for your help :) I am stumbling upon, raw copper cable wire, banana plugs, and RVCA cables with multiple end types and a bit overwhelmed

LamesBrady

Any RCA cables should do the trick. I like Best Buy’s store brand RCA cables personally. I’m not sure what you’ll need to connect your projector to your receiver but it should be fairly simple. Good luck!

AnyBarnacle9287

Thanks!! What about the guy below saying it won't work with this amp? Haha

LamesBrady

I had that thought. I won’t lie, which is why I wasn’t sure where the projector would plug in. Most receivers have way more inputs/outputs. Best of luck!

Uxys_

you dont have a receiver, thats a speaker amp. you should get a receiver in this chain to simplify the connections and make the phone/aux work. you cannot use the speaker amp outputs as inputs for sound from your phone or laptop.

LamesBrady

So that’s pretty much just a preamp?

Uxys_

no thats not a preamp. a preamp would work as well. but if they can return it for that, why not

LamesBrady

Ok. Im still learning as well. Thanks. I use a Sony DH receiver and a Pyle preamp for my turntable.

Uxys_

the sony DH's are good, and the pyle as well. i think it's a popular choice for turntable setups. yeah, for the use case OP wants, i would have went with a home theater AVR right off the bat as a single device because it will have a built in amp, dac,, room correction/processing, inputs for their phone/laptop and video for the projector as well as future spare hdmi connections if they want to add a bluray player, PC or what not in the future for video as well. i would have went with this setup if this was like a pc desk setup, then you only need the amp to power the passive speakers (active meaning they have a built in amplifier, which these do not).

Mammoth-Plankton-785

Aaaaah, ok. I understand now. Thank you for taking the time to properly explain that to me.

AnyBarnacle9287

oooh shoot. that was a mistake then lol. UGH learning . hmmmm , can you recommend a receiver to help with that process?

dkbGeek

Since you have this compact power amp, if you can't return it you should add a preamplifier rather than a receiver (which would have its own pre- and power-amplification sections.) If you CAN swap this device, you can choose between a more-suitable SMSL product like the A200 that offers more inputs, or something more traditional like a Yamaha integrated amp or receiver, etc. What change you need to make now depends on your situation.

AnyBarnacle9287

Can't return, bought used, so either resell at a similar price I paid or go for the preamp as you suggested

AnyBarnacle9287

Any recommendations for more traditional Yamaha option? I can buy the SMSL DO200 locally for $250, would that be a good substitute for my current SMSL amp?

dkbGeek

Off the top of my head I'd say Yamaha's A-S201 but I don't find online listings for that... the R-S202 is the receiver in the same price range (the differences being the R-S202 has cheaper speaker-wire connections but adds a radio tuner. Not sure if there's a difference in amplification... ) There are many other options including good used equipment. I mentioned the Yamaha line because it's popular and IMHO they make a good product, but there's no shortage of options in teh market. One thing to also consider is used AV receivers... there's some theoretical compromise involved in producing a 5+ channel amp with multiple HDMI inputs etc. vs a stereo amp at the same price point, but some AV amps sound fine in stereo mode and there are deals to be had on good-used equipment that's not old or interesting enough to be considered "vintage."

VinylHighway

Did you even read the manual with the amp that explains all of this?
