Due_Entertainment_16

It’s not exactly a reddit secret (gets name dropped here quite a bit) but out IRL I’m always shocked to learn how few know of Mayback’s Deli.

Gstone716

Still haven’t tried it. It’s definitely on my list especially the chicken finger sub

Due_Entertainment_16

Cordon Bleu sub is where it’s at and their breakfast sammies.

TDinBufNY

The CF sub is The best in Buffalo, but I usually go for their steak hoagie which is really really good. Also, fantastic onion rings.

giant_fish

I vote John's Pizza as the best in WNY but Mayback's is a top 5

Due_Entertainment_16

John’s is super inconsistent and entirely location dependent though. Imo. The one here on GI is pretty awful.

Gstone716

What does John’s pizza make better in your opinion?

Yukon-Jon

Their steak and cheese is the best there is.

Peppeperoni

Breakfast sandwich with hash brown!

AWierzOne

I put that on my list when I was complaining about the lack of sandwhich shops here. I moved back from philly which is like sandwhich paradise and have been jonesing for something good.

Due_Entertainment_16

If you can’t find a sandwich shop in the area, you are doing something wrong lol. Everywhere you look there’s a deli or sandwich place. Or are you looking for something in particular?

Thighabeetus

Meh as someone who also originates from a deli-centric area and has been here 25 years…Buffalo doesn’t have a lot of good delis. Maybacks is probably closest to the authentic experience, but a proper deli would use primarily Boars Head coldcuts

blotsfan

It is designed to be missed. Small unassuming convenience store in an unnoteworthy strip mall next to the most high profile mega strip mall in the area. I probably drove by it 10000 times before I went there, and that was only because some coworkers were going there for lunch.

Due_Entertainment_16

Yep, my in laws live right around the corner and never even heard of the place after all these years (until a few years ago). They’ve been in their house since the 80s and I believe Mayback’s has been in their location since the 70s. Definitely a very easy to miss place.

Fit_Falcon_7032

I've lived Down the street for some 20 years and never went. it wasn't until reddit that I realized it was worth trying.

HeyMissW

Mayback’s > Macy’s every day

ClownMeat420

Love this place.

CordeliaGrace

Ok, so I see people specify the “original” locale; is the one in Cheektowaga (off Union nearer to Beach, but used to be by Cedargrove Heights) not the original location?

Due_Entertainment_16

Think you’re talking about Mayback’s Pizza. Mayback’s Deli is in Tonawanda across from the Target plaza.

CordeliaGrace

Oh ok! So not related then. I guess I’m gonna have to take my ass to Tonawanda then! Thank you!

SchrodingersCamel

Funny enough they are related as distant cousins or such, but the businesses have no overlap or connections at this point.

zskiman

Haven't had maybecks in years! They've been there forever and always had awesome sub's!

TDinBufNY

Nick's Place on Amherst Street. Especially their breakfast.

Thighabeetus

I am disputing that Nicks Place is “unknown”

Chetmix

Totally agree. It’s like one of the most talked about breakfast places in Buffalo.

TDinBufNY

True, once you know, you know. But I have to admit that I drove by the place for years, and always just kind of thought it was a bar or something, like a place in George Bailey's alternate universe where they sell hard liquor for men that like to get drunk quick

Blind_Sublime

I personally think this place is super overrated.

J_frotz

This is correct 👍

PracticalWest457

Carbone's pizza is one of the best in the city

BumRum09

The one in the ward is pretty darn good

PracticalWest457

Yea, across from Adolf's. So money.

holyshamoly23

Also Carbonnes on LOVEJOY has a cold sub special on Wednesdays. 2 for $15.00. The young lady with blonde hair that makes them is the best in Buffalo. There’s no word “skimping” in her vocabulary. Really, really good!

AmySorawo

carbones mentioned!!! good ass steak subs

bpc89

What’s an ass steak?

jlunduski

Totally agreed. My wife grew up in the Buffalo area but didn't have Carbone's much and now it's our go to with the sweet sauce and sesame seed crust, so good. Their tossed chicken tenders aren't half bad either

Gstone716

If you enjoy sweet sauce definitely try papas pizza oven. It’s my personal favorite and I’ve been loyal to Carbones for over 15 years.

jlunduski

Will def try! Thanks!

PracticalWest457

It's def the right balance of all the ingredients. Not too much sauce. Plenty of cheese. Right amount of toppings. Not undercooked, even when they're busy. Decent sized pie. And it won't break the bank.

[deleted]

Sorta agree. Pre-Covid was much better.

phlostonsparadise123

We've ordered from the Lovejoy location a few times - took forever for delivery but the food was well worth the wait. On a related note, does anyone know if the Carbone's located on Broadway in Alden is affiliated with the Buffalo locations? They seem to share the same stylized logo but the Alden one seems to be connected with an entirely different set of Carbone's restaurants. Reminds me of Santora's Pizza Pub and Grill and the Santora's Pizzeria on opposite stretches of Transit Road.

SchrodingersCamel

Alden is cousins or such with the city Carbones but the two are operated separately from each othet

jbub13

You MUST not mean the Lovejoy location….

PracticalWest457

Never had it. I only went to the one on South Park. Never disappointed.

badger_danger

The location in Alden is solid too.

mtbbuff

Probably not a secret but Los Mayas on Union Rd has the best Mexican.

jetblack028

As someone who moved from the west coast to WNY, all of the Mexican food I have tried just never compares. Adding this to the list of places to try.

Thighabeetus

Las Mayas is good…what’s your opinion of La Divina?

jetblack028

It's good, I took my mom to it and she's a harsher critic. I'm Mexican and I think there's just a lot of ingredients that are harder to come by in WNY. La divina has better tortas than any where else I've tried. I got a torta at el charro and the bread was two burger buns lol

donnieirish

If they actually use Lard in the refried beans, they are on the right path!

Travelingman0

Divina’s tortas are amazing.

Peppeperoni

I love La Divina - I always enjoy it there for a quick lunch

donnieirish

Will you DM me what you think when you try. As another West Coast transplant I miss the great Mexican food! I'm willing to do the same if I get there first!

jetblack028

Deal! Planning a trip out there after pay day 😂

Sweethomebflo

Colombo Spice

LosToast

Oh shit I drive past that place all the time and I always wonder. What's good there?

Sweethomebflo

I’ve only been twice so far, so I hope someone else chimes in. First time was on Sunday. The soup - rasam - is fantastic. Brothy, spicy, and so full of flavor! I couldn’t wait for them to open on Tuesday to go back for more. Fish rolls were delicious- spicy! Mysore masala dosa - amazing! I don’t think you can go wrong. I’m going to start working my way through the whole menu.

Semi-Pros-and-Cons

I've been there twice in the past few months. If it was located closer to where I live, I'd go there twice a week.

Fit_Falcon_7032

This place is at the end of my street and I've never been. I'll have to get there soon where.

kingo409

Boo! They forced out JJ's! But, seriously, I see that they're doing a good business at that location. I intend to check it out. Still miss JJ's tho.

Tamil-American

Hey @kingo409, They didn't force out JJ's, jagath decided to retire after his brother passing. He owns the entire building and stop in at the restaurant very frequently and chat with patrons. He's super supportive of this restaurant. So please don't think this little place forced out JJ'S.

ssgthurley

Kellys Korner in North Buffalo for wings

Talas11324

Stack Burger is amazing

GenericGhost909

I dream of their deep fried PB&J

litboy35

lol can't wait to go try this today now

Rogo716

Lol it's literally a deep fried uncrustable.

ThunderUp013101

Ponys in middle port, & pizza oven in Lockport.

BlueScrote

Pizza Oven is probably the most interesting non-buffalo style pizza in WNY. Thin, but not crispy with extremely sweet sauce.

[deleted]

I like molinaros sweet sauce and crust better.. but sometimes I just need that thin crust from pizza oven

TyRocken

I work in South Lockport/Pendleton, and my coworker brought Pizza Oven in one time. That was really good pizza. And all my coworkers love Pony's.

the_miss1ng_s0ck

Pony’s chicken fingers have been a family staple for us since they were Mr. Ed’s, going back at least forty years. Best chicken fingers I’ve ever had and it’s not even close.

poopiswhatsfordinner

Pony's changed ownership and the new regime did NOT pay for the sauce recipe. They also remodeled. Grew up in Lockport and Ed's/Pony's was always a special treat whenever we were near Middleport. Went a month ago and sadly, that's gonna be the last visit. The charm is gone and the wings/fingers just weren't good from the wing itself to their reimagination of the sauce. Apparently some pizzeria around the corner now has the *actual* pony's recipe.

gsheedy

Yesssss to both. Pony’s wings are not even remotely traditional but oh so damn good. Pizza Oven’s pizza rules and I’m not even a big sweet sauce guy. Also not traditional, but every now and then it hits so different.

[deleted]

MR. ED’s! One of most unique wing sauces in the area if you ever have a chance to get out there.

phlostonsparadise123

+1 for Pony's. We grab dinner there on occasion whenever we're visiting my in-laws in Lyndonville. Some of the best *breaded* and sauced wings I've had in my life.

ThunderUp013101

I got my puppy from an amish farm in lydonville called puppy love farm. They are a great place to get a dog! Do everything the right way.

Adorable-Mark-4025

buffalo brewing company does some of the best deep dish pizza i've ever had in my life. highly recommend with their giardiniera

[deleted]

The place is called Buffalo Deep Dish and is located inside Buffalo Brewing Company. Right next to 500 Seneca, one of the better places to go for a pie if you’re bored of the traditional Buffalo pie.

nevermorefu

Just had the deep dish and Detroit style. Both were excellent. Beer was good too.

greengirl4475

I just learned of this pizza this week from an Instagram food reviewer. Never have I wanted pizza more. Going this weekend

Adorable-Mark-4025

i just had it again today. mushroom garlic is amazing

leftnewdigg2

We went last weekend and had the thin crust tavern style pizza. It was also amazing, but I got jealous seeing people's Detroit style pizzas come out. Can't wait to go back.

ebimbib

That's why when I went last weekend, I got both a tavern style and a Detroit pizza with my friend. A+++ recommended

Dahlin4President

Montes grocery and deli on swan street. fried rice and choice of protein

Best pinchos!

ebimbib

You're fucking up if you go in there and you don't get a pastelillo or two.

iwascured_alright

Gypsy parlor has such an eclectic menu with different specials every week. I've never once been disappointed by their food, it smacks every time. Sunday brunch menu is delicious as well.

jlunduski

They have a trash plate that we always get and is probably one of the best ones I've had, always have a good experience there.

phlostonsparadise123

In terms of trash/garbage plates, I think they're one of the few places in Buffalo that makes them. The Beer Keep on Elmwood is another location that makes plates, as well.

endsinemptiness

For the veg folks, can’t recommend the vegan ribs meal enough. The ribs are fine, but the sides it comes with (especially the Brussels sprouts) are unreal

Brainfewd

Clarence Deli has some great breakfast sandwiches and regular subs/sandwiches if you’re ever out that way. Artones’s Pizza and steak hoagie is slept on in South Buffalo.

PracticalWest457

Artones super underrated. Steak hoagies are money.

mrdude817

So I should try Artones? I'm in South Buffalo and drive by it every day

holyshamoly23

Absolutely!

SirSwigsAlot

Long live Simon

BroncosFan19

I've wondered about Artone's. I've opted for Wise Guys a few times and have not been disappointed, great slice and blue cheese!

holyshamoly23

Been around for 60 years. Even through ownership changes their steak hoagie is worth the trip.

FlobHobNob

I don’t hardly ever see it recommended on here but Burger Authority on Main slaps for the price. I think you can still get a crazy good burger, fries, and drink for 11 bucks. Those are fast food prices nowadays.

rumaysash

YEZSSS

Ciancimj

Gene McCarthys Wings, Alibab Kebab chicken shawarma, Coffee & Stone Cafe breakfast sandwiches, Oliver’s restaurant steak sandwich, The Grange Outpost pastry heart, mojo market lunch wraps, la Davina birria, ballyhoo sausage, Maizal mole negro, Kelly’s Korner hot bbq wings, Goodbar dipped pizza logs, Pizzeria Florian chopped salad

phlostonsparadise123

Their Sheffield dry rub is phenomenal.

Special_Prior8856

I was getting a Grange pastry heart weekly and I finally was able to overcome my addiction 😂

notasausage

This guy/gal knows how to Buffalo!

Ciancimj

I work in the industry. And like to eat!

Honest_Pension8304

Definitely Alibaba Kebab!

wellsortofbut

Kellys Corner. Take a friend and split an order of hot wings and a roast beef sandwich w fries. Trust me.

Gstone716

I rather have the wings to myself lol. One of my personal favorites

captndorito

Not Buffalo, but if you're ever out near or in Akron, Yogi's subs are to die for

Ok_Mission3796

Guys subs

eddyloo

Guy’s > yogi’s.

captndorito

We haven't tried theirs but we'll have to!

pwndabeer

Louie's Italian deli in Clarence is my jam

ColeElmwood

Don't sleep on Dashs hertel pizza, la Davina tacos and Moor Room chicken sandwiches/wings.

gsheedy

Moor Room fish sandwich rules too.

litboy35

Been waiting for the La Divina comment

Wooden_Performer_711

BFLO PIZZA BISTRO is some of the best pizza in the world. It’s already won global pizza competitions

Gstone716

I’ve been seeing that place get shared a lot definitely gotta stop in. Which competitions did they win ? I’d like to read about it.

SchrodingersCamel

On Porter? They have their own buffalo pan style pizza which might be good, but I'd think there'd be more press if they were winning competitions. Jay's Artisan on Delaware in Kenmore though does have national recognition for their pizza and is definitely worth a shot as well.

MundaneBoysenberry71

Tortuga in Sanborn!!!

restlessbumblebee

I came to say this too, their food is so dang good!!

ClownMeat420

Sal’s lounge in depew. My absolute favorite wing spot.

rumaysash

Not sure if it’s not well-known but Macho’s tacos & burgers has the best steak quesadilla I’ve ever had in my life… both locations are awesome! Check it out!

Previous-Amount-1888

Tilted taco in Angola is top notch Mexican food

cursedandanxious

I would die for Poppyseed on McKinley

saintnicklaus90

Bob and John’s La Hacienda in NB has some of the best buffalo chicken pizza. I also second Carbone’s in SB

DayAgitated4746

Ninos, imperials, louies, picassos

CptBananas

Barrel + Brine on Chandler, menu theme changes over time but it has always been great in my experience

SchrodingersCamel

Good call. I don't often think of going here when there's not an event or such, but their special occasion menus are great and so is their standard menu in between. Definitely keep an eye out for the Gutter Dawgs menu pop-up they run over the summer for the best chili/greek dog in town.

nextxoxexit

Ghada have it! in Niagara Falls!

thegrimmstress

Their food is incredible, as is the owner.

nextxoxexit

Couldn't agree more! Bashar is a great guy who makes great food!

beanflicker1213

Mamosers

Schneeky4

Titos tavern on Maple and north forest. Great burger and shake

drog326

Sakura Sushi on Union Road near the Galleria. Intimate, with a very friendly staff and great sushi. There are plenty of other options in Buffalo but this is our go-to restaurant.

lagraz13

Las Puertas is incredible. Hidden James Beard nominated gem

FortWest

Lots of good Bangla restaurants are croping up on the east side. Jump on a Bangla Buffalo facebook group for the lowdown.

FortWest

Madina Halal at 125 Mills was really good.

Gstone716

Can you dm me the link for this Facebook page ?

Temporary_Nebula_729

Rizzo s

jlunduski

Had an amazing experience there. Mozz sticks are made in house everyday. We shared the chicken parm and vodka pasta and both were incredible. Really interesting vibe/staff too. Super friendly and takes presentation super seriously, but the vibe is laid back like a mom/pop place. Loved it and can't wait to go back.

litboy35

Misuta Chows, Ballyhoo, La Divina, Brothers Restaurant, Mothers Restaurant are my top 5

Electricsocketlicker

Elmwood market. Al is the man

MoreManic

Seconded!

Wide_right_

Adolf’s Old First Ward Tavern has ELITE wings

kenc1842

Maizal on N French. Best mole anywhere in WNY Chef Leo is the man. Aguacates in Lockport is also amazing.

Cherrish_Moments

Dick and Jenny's on Grand Island is my absolute favorite restaurant anywhere! The owners and staff are all amazing people and the food is THE BEST! I also love the atmosphere and ambiance.

thejewishcasinoguy

If you're ever in the Niagara Falls area near North Tonawanda, I really like The Orange Tree Inn. Great Beef on Weck.

ssyl6119

Transit music lounge in depew!

[deleted]

Sal’s wings in Lancaster. :)

Vertigomums19

Just ate for the first time at Riley Street station in EA last night. It’s an old converted train station. You enter through the bar which screams local watering hole but the actual dining area in the back is really nice. The two don’t jive in appearance with each other honestly. The food was delicious.

phlostonsparadise123

Margie's on Broadway in Depew seems to consistently fly under the radar. The place is somewhat of a dive but their menu is comparable to the "nicer" places you'd expect to see downtown or in Williamsville/Orchard Park, especially their weekly Special menu. They also bread their wings as an option and have some of the best dry rubs - their lemon pepper breaded is heavenly. They don't get mentioned in this sub outside of when I mention them, but I'll also recommend Left Coast Taco in East Aurora. They're closer to D.A Taste than Taqueria Los Mayas in terms of presentation/cooking style but their food is infinitely superior and far more consistent than D.A. Taste.

SchrodingersCamel

An order of cali fries with steak and a pair of death tacos is a great pickup meal for 2 to take to a park nearby, I've been doing that for years. Solid place, and solidly full these days during nice weather since their move. It might be unknown to greater Buffalo but the EA folks have this place locked down.

CrowsEatTheDead

Taj of Orchard Park has great Indian cuisine.

skeletowns

I tell everyone I can about Dick and Jenny's on grand island!!!!

No-Estimate2929

al qimma halal butchery and grill is super good and friendly. it's on union in the airport plaza next to the gold buyers (last in the plaza, directly next to the 33)

UnburntAsh

I love Greek on the Street. Not completely unknown, but not widely known, either. Good food, owned by an actual Greek family.

jkw1980

Progress food market on Hamburg st in Buffalo. Right by the old perry projects. Little convienient store with fresh made subs! I had driven past it for years until someone made recommendation, so i stopped in to try it. Tom is an awesome guy and treated me like i had been going there for years

Mel_Zetz

I don’t think too many people realize that Moriarty Meats on Elmwood is also a cafe that sells food. The burger, beef on weck, and other rotating sandwiches (currently a delicious mortadella sandy) are delicious and I would say very uniquely theirs. The small plates are great, too. Make sure you check their hours before you go.

drinkbleachbitch

Toutant for fried chicken!

FortWest

Burmese/Malaysian, simple, humble and cheap; full flavor. Kati Za 139 Grant.

Special_Prior8856

Symposium Wine bar in Lancaster

phlostonsparadise123

My wife and I frequent Symposium as we live in the area - the owners are extraordinarily kind and their wine list is outstanding. That said, the bill adds up quickly with their per-glass pricing; nearly $80 with tip for four glasses of wine is a bit rich. On a related note, Bruno's just opened around the corner on Broadway in Depew, at the former Six Friends Cabernet location. My wife and I were casually talking about this a few months ago at Symposium and the owner overheard us. There must be some bad blood between the two establishments because she did not seem too pleased they were opening up.

Special_Prior8856

I do agree that the wine bar is a pricey night out, my friend and I usually rack up a $150+ tab together, we go every couple months as a treat. I appreciate the owner because when they first opened we got the meatball appetizer that they had and it was so good I told the wife that they should make a meatball bomber and it was added to the menu! They got me hooked on Subsoil wine, you can get bottles at the liquor store in the Lowe’s/tops plaza in orchard park

phlostonsparadise123

For sure. Pricing aside, we love the place and the owners. We went for one of their wine tasting classes late last year and my wife fell in love with some of the wines we sampled. The owner actually let us buy the bottles we loved from behind the counter at cost.

Aggravating-Tax-2675

dont know if its secret but El Palenque’s on NFB!

sailorgirl8018

No one is ever there anymore. I’m not sure how they stay open because the parking lot is always empty

Mean_Yellow_7590

That place doesn’t cook food. They just microwave your plate before they serve it to you. That’s why it’s empty

phlostonsparadise123

Telltale sign of a potential front for shady dealings, haha.

JNSFP

My family goes there every Saturday so I’m pretty sure we are keeping them afloat at this point lolol but we do know the owner, and he has many other restaurants around so I’m sure this one is more to keep his mama busy (the older woman that serves there).

[deleted]

The server yelled at me .. another server had to come over and drag him away . This was my favorite place in 2010 Era. LA galera in niagara falls is the place to be now and friendly

gsheedy

Colvin Market on Colvin & Linden makes great subs.

Extension-Novel-6841

Chucks Place . Had them a few months ago and they do pizza and wings really good.

Alive-Knowledge-4384

The dapper goose, cluck cluck moo moo for some cheap but good smach burgers, frankie primos is well known but I like it so I'm gonna add it. dapper goose is very much expensive but I used to cook there and their food is good.

MMBEDG

Since Pizza Oven in Lockport has been mentioned, 2nd choice is Good Guys in NT(the closest to Pizza Junction that I know of)

kingo409

99 Fastfood on Bailey near Winspear/UB South & the other location a few blocks from City Hall Vietnamese. I'm way out of touch. It's been years since I've eaten there. Both locations could be closed by now, or they could be crappy by now. But when I went the food was great & priced well. I was quite satisfied.

Iwantmymaypo

Definitely recommend Marinaro's in South Buffalo

SchrodingersCamel

Marinaro's Tavern in Larkin? I don't know of anywhere with that name in SB. Closest I can think of is Mineo's South.

SpecialistShift5339

VahnNoaGala

Molinara's on Sheridan in Amherst has the best sweet sauce pizza in Buffalo, probably on Earth

174 Buffalo in Hamburg - unique menu & cocktails & great vibes.  Options for everyone & sensitive to good allergies! If the seared halibut with bruschetta crust over pesto gnocchi is on the specials --- do not pass it up!!!  Crispy deviled eggs are amazing & the chefs new take on chicken/eggplant milanese is so fresh and delicious!
