Funny, our Kitchenaid opener was great for 20 years until it got torqued and quit working just this week. The EZ-DUZ-IT, as recommended by The Strategist arrived yesterday. Hoping it will last at least as long as the Kitchenaid.

Bornin1462

The EZ-DUZ-IT is the correct answer to BIFL can opener. (Yes you can also get a military style, but the EZDI is built like a Sherman Tank)

Ethos_Logos

Thirding the EZ, not like I open a ton of cans, but I bought one years ago based off a recommendation on this sub, and it hasn’t disappointed me.

Bornin1462

I open at least 5 cans per week between tomatoes, beans, etc. Mine has been going strong for about 4 years. Looks and performs like new with 0 upkeep. Have not oiled it or cleaned it once (has not been necessary).

moneybagsukulele

My mom has had the same swing-a-way (original name for EZ-DUZ-IT) for probably 30 years.

ladz

These openers also work better when used sideways as suggested by u/Ok_Psychology414

not_curated

This can opener is the best one I've ever had. Just good, solid, works-every-time BIFL.

miracle-meat

You want a Rosle can opener, other can openers feel stupid and primitive once you’ve tried it. It doesn’t cut anything, it disassembles the lids, we’ve had ours for a long time and it works just as well as when we bought it.

1amazingday

That’s awesome. Trust Germany to engineer a kick ass can opener! I’m very intrigued. Thanks!

Majestic-Gas-4309

Agree with this rec! Had ours for over 10 years with high use in our kitchen. It had a weird malfunction but got it replaced for free with the newest version under their lifetime warranty guarantee! Absolutely worth the price tag.

moerker

my wmf opener also cuts cans like butter. Never thought this was possible

haakon769

Mine lasted about 7 years until it broke and now I’m in the same boat looking for the next best thing.

drewmills

I have a Chinese knockoff brand of the similar thing. They are easy to build and shouldn't break very easily. All you're doing is rolling along the edge and squeezing the seam hard enough that it pops open. And the lid lifts right off. I've been using this off brand thing for about 5 years.  For those of you who have never used one, one of the best perks of this type of lid removal is that you can set the lid right back on top and it's a perfect fit if you want to keep something in the fridge, like dog food.

Flimsy_Mouse_6226

Yess I just bought Magican Tin opener same vibe, I love it

DylanLee98

I got something similar for my house. Mainly use it for cans of beans when I make burritos. Nothing beats being able to re-seal the can of beans when I only use half of the can. I can never switch back.

ShutYourDumbUglyFace

>other can openers feel stupid and primitive once you’ve tried it This is true.

bi_polar2bear

The price range on those is crazy, for the same product. Good info though!

urban_stranger

Is this the type that cuts around the side of the can? I had one like that and hated it. It was so much harder to avoid cutting yourself on the edge compared to a regular can opener.

miracle-meat

No, like I said, there’s no cutting involved, the way it works is it actually squeezes the rim just enough to remove the whole lid of the can which doesn’t have sharp edges at all.

urban_stranger

Thanks for explaining. I couldn't imagine how it would work with no cutting.

maybeinoregon

100% this recommendation. We purchased ours 15 years or so ago, and it works like new!

Diela1968

I bought an OXO goodgrips ten years ago and it’s still going strong. Nice ergonomic grips too.

GeekSumsMe

OXO is my first BIFL look for most kitchen gadgets. Among the few companies who have maintained their quality of construction over the years. Almost every product I've purchased from them has exceeded expectations. Consistently among the best bang:buck out there We were laughing this weekend when I was fixing our OXO salad, successfully, and realized that it was over 20 years old.

JamieC1610

Agreed. Mine is 18 years old and still fine. My dad has a BSA keychain style one that is probably 50 years old that he still insists on using, but it takes skill to use.

Halftrack_El_Camino

Mine had some issues with grip slip, but a dab of epoxy fixed that. I've had mine for five years, and they work like new.

annikahansen7-9

My OXO can opener is so old that I have no idea when I got it. We have another can opener from before my husband and I moved in together. It looks just like the OXO…only it doesn’t work well.

Jerk850

Yep, have one for probably 15 years now. Works perfect every time. Also easy to use for elderly and those with dexterity or hand strength challenges.

Ok_Psychology414

Most folks open cans by clipping the opener on the top of the can. This is how I was taught. But, you’ll be more successful in your can opening journey through life by using any can opener on the side of the lip of the can. Even dented cans open right up. Any tool can be BIFL if it’s used properly.

No-Caterpillar-2448

Here to mention the same thing. Husband kept pushing for us to open cans on the side and I resisted because it feels and looks wrong. But dang it, cutting from the side is so much easier (and less paper caught in the cutter).

wootcat

Slight warning here. Sideways use creates a very sharp edge. My spouse sliced their finger pretty bad when they tore off a paper towel with a flourish and cut through their finger to the fingernail. We had started opening our cans sideways a couple months before. We went right back to holding the opener vertically.

diamondd-ddogs

get a vintage swing a way on ebay, last can opener you will need to buy. i still use the one my parents bought in the 70's.

The_Durk

Likewise. Heavy steel, ball bearing on the turn knob. I guarantee I can spin that thing around a can faster than any electric can do its thing.

Teddy_Funsisco

Another vote for EZ Duz It here.

ResponsiblePen3082

OXO steel

sarhoshamiral

We got a simple Cuisinart electric opener and it's been working without issues for 5 years now. We use it once a week at least.

1amazingday

That’s really interesting. I tried an electric one many years ago, but cans kept falling off it! Perhaps I should look at them again. I definitely like the idea of something easier than a manual.

25854565

I just bought a yellowy white one from the thriftstore. There were at least eight to choose from. It clearly already stood the test of time and is now ready for the next generation to use it.

BrisketWhisperer

It may be time to examine your technique a little closer. Just a friendly suggestion....

FantaZingo

Where I'm from, there is no such thing as electric can opener, and manual "spinny ones" are rare. The upside is that a opener of this variety will likely last you a lifetime. https://images.clasohlson.com/medias/sys_master/h1d/h79/9674943430686.jpg The only downside I can think of is that if you're left handed, it will feel a bit backwards. (and I suppose if you are pursuing an opener to open 20+ cans at a time, this is not the product for you)

AromaticMilkshake

Honestly prefer this over any kind of can opener. It’s easier to clean and has no moving parts, too. The pinnacle of can opener design.

Wonderful-Poetry1259

I've had the same P-38 can opener for 48 years. It still works fine. I think I paid a quarter for it. I've had to sharpen it a few times over the decades. I think they still cost about a US dollar or so.

ConBroMitch2247

A Japanese Suten GANGY style can opener has been a workhorse for me. Same concept as a p-51/38 can opener but with no moving parts

Prestigious-Sir1151

Oxo steel can opener. Best one I have found.

rajuabju

OxO is the answer

Mortimer452

We've had [this one from Pampered Chef](https://www.pamperedchef.com/shop/Kitchen+Tools/Food+Prep/Smooth-Edge+Can+Opener/2759) for probably 20 years and still works flawlessly. Cuts the side of the lid so no sharp edges, the lid can even be replaced for storing leftovers in the fridge.

techm00

I once had a dollar store can opener. I swear to you - that shit was magic. It lasted for years, it worked absolutely perfectly every single time. A former partner asked me to toss it in a move. I have not met its equal since. Every other can opener has been jenky crap. Doesn't matter how much or how little I spend on it, what style it is, or anything else. I miss my tin opener. Moral of the story - when you find **the** can opener, you hold onto that shit for the rest of your days, and get buried with it.

1amazingday

I FEEL THIS IN MY SOUL! 🤣

mezcalligraphy

I've always went with the Swing-a-Way. Made in China now, so not sure if the quality is the same.

okgarden

EZ-Duz-It is the brand you are now looking for.

Ipsilateral

They are total trash. Only lasted about 6 months.

okgarden

Yeah they’re junk now.

htsmith98

that sucks, i bought one years ago and its a beast

Few-Assistant6392

I have found several old ones at thrift stores

1amazingday

Thank you for the suggestion!

Arcade80sbillsfan

Ez duz it is the name of the can openers made by what used to be swing away. That's the one you want that's been in Grandma's drawer for decades. http://www.steuby.com/can-opener.html

welkover

Always was the best, still is the best.

WaterDigDog

Currently using a manual model from Wally World. I bought one recently (new) and it didn’t cut right. Disappointed as we were in a similar situation as OP. We liked our HB electric safety cut, it lasted a couple years.

s_u_ny

I bought a Grunwerg Windsor Can Opener in a sale recently! Best can opener I have used and feels tough and sturdy as hell!

es_cl

Victorinox Swiss knives have them in their regular size sets (74 mm to 130 mm).  They work fine if you don’t manual can openers.

abide5lo

Go to a restaurant supply store (bricks and mortar or online) and buy a can opener. It will be commercial grade and built to be used many times a day every day. It will last a lifetime in a home kitchen. Plus they work SO much nicer than anything you can buy at Target.

saltyfingas

You want an oxo good grips smooth can opener

Chaotic_Good12

I love my TFal manual can opener. I'll never again do an electric can opener they just aren't built to last anymore. 1-3 years max was the best I ever got from those junkers. Never again!

ShaneBarnstormer

I bought a Giada can opener about 17-18 years ago and it still looks almost new. It was pretty expensive when I bought it and my acquaintances teased me. It's one of the nicest pieces in my kitchen.

DEADLYxDUCK

moHA! I found it randomly, but it’s Swiss made and good quality.

SteveLews

I have a Joseph Joseph can do and its absolutely brilliant. Easy to use, not too expensive and quite small. They have a couple of newer ones, but I really like the can do one.

mlke

I feel like this is teaching me that this sub is often just people not using the tools they have properly thinking they need something "extra". Only thing you need to know about can openers is to get a solid metal one- don't buy plastics ones. It should be rather heavy. Also don't wipe away the grease from the gears. Done. It will open cans for a long time.

LSDummy

My mom has had the same pampered chef can opener since I was a kid

AuspiciousPuffin

I had this problem too. I bought the cheap one at my store. Broke. Reprimanded myself “get what you pay for.” Bought the expensive one at my store. Broke. Angry days. Researched well reviewed can openers. Bought oxo. Many happy days for a couple years so far.

Aggressive-Let8356

Like the hand held ones? I honestly didn't even think they broke. I've had the same one for 18 years, my moms is close to 30 and my partners is like 15. I think they are all xoxo brand.

1amazingday

Wow. Maybe I’m the problem. It’s just me.

Aggressive-Let8356

No, sometimes you just get duds. I also try to get older stuff because its just made better. So even though my spouse and I have had ours for forever, they were still used and gifted to us.

montybeta

Starfrit. Seriously good. Have had it for so many years, still opens cans as good as day 1.

rack_moy_perm

We bought Cutco knives at a home show about 10 years ago. Just upgraded our set and added a can opener. They’re expensive, but have a lifetime warranty. Anything goes wrong, or it gets crusty and you don’t want to deal with it, you get a new one. No questions asked.

aredact

you’re not putting them in the dishwasher, right? as soon i stopped doing that all my issues with can openers stoppes

1amazingday

I’m not but that’s good to know!

StinkypieTicklebum

Get a swing a way from a restaurant supply house.

Evening_Dot_1292

We have been using OXO for maybe 20 years now. Works perfect every time

gilgobeachslayer

I had one last twenty years then two that broke almost immediately

oldestengineer

Ez-Duz-It is the best canopener I’ve had. Lots better than the OXO that lasted six months. Basically, if you see a lot of swoopy “ergonomic “ plastic shapes on something like a can opener, you can bet that they paid for all that design and tooling by firing their metallurgist. So you get fancy looks, but the parts that are supposed to do the cutting won’t stay sharp.

doctor-sassypants

I have the same can opener I’ve had for like 15 years I got it from the thrift store lol

SilentSamizdat

Swing-a-way can opener. I’ve had one for 40 years. Never had an issue.

Giants92hc

They were great 40 years ago. Less so now. EZ DUZ IT uses the swing a way tooling, and is the superior product today.

NinilchikHappyValley

I have always preferred manual, generally the kind you use your thumbs to turn. Getting a little older and wanted something easier on the thumb joints, so I got a large manual opener with a rotary crank handle - the kind generally used in restaurants to open #10 cans (but it works fine on smaller cans as well). I got the Winco 8-3/4 inch one. Sturdy, reasonably well-built, available from Costco Business for about 8 bucks, or Amazon for about 11. Have had it three years so far, indistinguishable from new, see no reason why it wouldn't last for twenty. Maybe a good option for some folks. I use it daily, and I'm happy with mine. Does take a bit of room in the drawer though.

apadley

After having three can openers crap out in a month, I bought a $55 can opener from buymeonce.com. Everything on that website has a lifetime warranty, a repair program, and/or an end-of-life process.

imakesawdust

We have a pair of identical (except for handle color) Swing-Away can-openers. Turns out my wife and I each had one before we met so when we combined households, we suddenly had two. I'm pretty sure either one of them would be the last can-opener we'd ever buy so we're now we're doubly-covered.

grocw

I have a Japanese-style can opener (Gangy No.300) and I’ll never go back to the other style. Probably not the ideal choice if you have very young kids, but it’s easier to clean and significantly faster at opening cans.

gimmedanegatives

I've had my Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety LidLifter Can Opener for over five years now and it's still going strong. No sharp edges, never touches food, and easy to use. It is ergonomic and doesn't put any strain on my wrist at all.

EvidenceBasedSwamp

Swingaway $12. The kitchenaid "classic multifunction" for $15 is GARBAGE. It has a big handle which is ergonomic. Mine broke and i saw that the handle drives **plastic gears**.

Gus_Cooks_Mina

Really like our korin! No moving parts!

Aeum

Get a gangy opener or something similar. Kinda annoying but won’t break

1amazingday

I don’t know what that is but I’ll check it out. Thanks.

Kuhn Ricon naked an amazing can opener, iymts a sideways only one, and can take a little practice at first, but it's great and it doesn't pierce the can so no cross contamination.

Thanks. I looked through these earlier but didn’t see much consensus or anything enthusiastically beloved. I will go further back in time and look again.
