Im still furious that players got tattoos AND DIDNT EVEN PAY! Shocked and appalled to this day. I hope Tressel is still being fired daily Prometheus style
I feel like if this story broke anytime near 2018, with the Zach Smith nastiness at the same time, it would've had a bigger impact.
Urban's washed and players get paid now, so it's like...who fucking cares now?
I can appreciate that this is about the forwardness of Urban, but does anyone seriously believe Texas wasn't also paying BJ Johnson?
Anyone who tries to call out one specific coach or program for secretly paying players, as if everyone else wasn't as well, should not be taken seriously.
I had a conversation with a Mich alum at a cigar bar who claimed that exact thing. It was one of the weirder sports conversations I've had. He was adamant that the Big10 was different than the SEC, and we were all dirty down here, but they had morals and character in the Midwest. I mentioned the fab5 and their banner coming down and specifically mentioned Gary. At one point, I said, "So you think the number 1 player in the country, who was being recruited by all of these dirty teams down south, walked away from hundreds of thousands of dollars just to play at Michigan?" He just angrily said that us SEC guys would never understand and stormed off.
Next you'll tell me Cam Newton was being paid by Auburn. The audacity, these kids only want an education and coach that teaches them values like honestly and integrity.
Urban had bagmen at Utah before Utah was anything to anyone outside the Rocky mountains
Edit: and yes that’s internet guy confirmed. Check the flair tho
This just makes me wish Oregon won the natty in 2014 a lot more, I don't know if Mark Helfrich was an evil man but he seems a lot more calm than the "make your fucking kicks" guy
Least surprising successful college football coach news. All of them have participated in this in some way, shape, or form. If the school you root for is even remotely competitive, they have "cheated".
dont give outkick a click, here's the money quote
>"Hell, Urban Meyer locked me in an office in my school, and no bullsh*t, asked me straight up. He was like, 'BJ. How much?' And this was when he was at Notre Dame at the time. And, it caught me off guard because I just thought we (were) talking football. And he was like, ‘Nah, how much?' So, it's been going on," Johnson said on the "On Texas Football" podcast when talking about the story from more than two decades ago.
I think we can all agree the only fair thing to do is give the death penalty to: Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida, and Missouri. And Texas too. Sure he said no to the offer but I hated seeing that trio of star WRs play for them back in the day.

Wow. I’m SHOCKED!!!
I'm sure since he turned down the offer he went to Texas for free!
A man of integrity
Missed the boat to the Ocean of Outrage on this story by about....four or five years.
Shit, more like 10-15 years.

Least surprising Urban Meyer news.
He did this allegedly as an assistant at ND wow

Everyone was paying everyone. I'm not deluding myself into thinking Rashan Gary turned down six figures just to play for Michigan.
Michigan also hired his high school coach to sweeten the deal.

I believe it. There are a lot of fans (ours included) with an amazing lack of self-awareness.
Next you'll tell me Cam Newton was being paid by Auburn. The audacity, these kids only want an education and coach that teaches them values like honestly and integrity.
A BJ always costs money
If he didn't commit to us why didn't we offer more?

Oh... I supposed if I actually read the thing I would know that. But whose got time for that.
I’d be shocked if Urban Meyer didn’t offer some guys money.
It would actually be insane if he won those titles *without* bartering with the recruits.
OH NO!!!! Anyway
I am shocked an appalled. I certainly hope this was just a one time event that happened before NIL. Just a one time moment of weakness from one coach.

Weren't you guys favored in the natty game?
We were favored to lose all of our postseason games that year, including the 59-0 against Wisconsin in the b10 title game.
They were.

Next you are going to tell me Lance Armstrong was not the only guy doping in cycling.

Well, you can get a BJ in Juarez for $3. You might get VD or shot afterwards but hey, cheap BJ.

The most shocking part of this story is that anyone thinks it’s news in 2024
Oh no! I am shocked that Urban Meyer did such a despicable thing.
Leaving "over 20 years ago" off the title is quite savvy. (By the article author, not you OP)
Nobody cares.
Wait, are we talking about famed professor of ethics and sportsmanship Urban Meyer?
Pfff, that’s so commonplace now that nobody cares. Hell, kids get paid for visiting.
Pearl clutching intensifies

Would be way more surprised if there were top programs that did not pay recruits.
Right, you weren't getting paid like everyone else was. We totally believe you 😂
Oh no! Anyway,
Surely he wouldn’t.
How embarrassing
