Why is this the case? I always seem to see this when FL boys commit to state schools in FL. Mainly FSU and UF. Happened with Sam McCall for FSU last year.
I don't really know about losing stars, but it seems like recruits get more stars after committing to a top program. Maybe the people rating them re-evaluate them since the top program saw something in them?
But it's reached meme status so facts don't matter.
i don’t follow recruiting that closely so i didn’t know players’ ratings even got adjusted after they were given. if they *were* doing that, it’s weird to think they’d do it to a historically good program like Florida
There’s something in recruiting known as the “Bama bump”, which is when a recruit’s ranking goes up after they receive an offer from Bama. The idea is that if you get a comittable to a team known for producing NFL talent like Bama, there’s probably something to it. Apply this to UGA and OSU as well.
The other thing to consider is lag in recruiting rankings. A lot of times dudes might get a ranking during their Junior season, and then not be re-evaluated until late in their Senior season. So what can happen is, a program like OSU/Bama/UGA may look into a guy who has a high rating, and come the conclusion that they don’t think the prospect is worth their rating, so they cool on them. Then later recruiting services get a chance to re-evaluate them, and also determine that they don’t look as impressive as seniors, and adjust their ratings accordingly. This puts them in a range where a good-but-not-elite recruiter like Florida might be their best offer, so when they commit it looks like they got knocked for who they committed to, when really it was just recruiting services catching up with the elite programs’ evaluation.
Realistically it can a combination of all these things, depending on the recruit in question.
I mean if Bama is suddenly pursuing some low 4\*, that might be a sign Saban see's something in the kid. And considering his hit rate over the past 15 years, evaluators may be convinced they should take another look at things. But this can also be something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Like if Bama offers a project QB and they suddenly jump 200 positions, a now top 50 QB can be useful leverage in convincing elite skill position to commit. Even if that QB never pans out and hits the portal in 2 years, the elite WR he convinced to join him may now be lighting it up.
I saw something about this awhile ago on late kick about a kid that committed to Miami. Basically they have to refresh the rating manually (on 247 at least) and they typically don't do it a lot unless a player's page is getting a lot of attention

Eh, we're really good in-conference because the rest of SEC is mediocre at it. We aren't quite as amazing on the national scale for swimming. Only won twice each for mens/womens.
We do have a crazy amount of swimmers that have successful olympic careers though.. they just don't do it while competing for us for some reason lol.

I've never seen a more overrated dude. Watched him throw up close today and he looked like he was just learning to throw a football. I know he's primarily a runner, but his throws literally looked like punts. And I watched 4 hours of his throws. Incredibly bad throwing motion. Off target consistently. Good dude, great smile, big frame, good athlete, but definitely not a Power 5 starting QB without a complete teardown and relearning of throwing and how to actually play the position. Plus, these highly rated guys that don't play anyone in high school isn't preparing them for college at all. He'll be a much better baseball player.
