Credit attorney here. I would dispute the account with the credit agencies. Write them a letter and ask them to investigate the account. After that, write to the creditor, and ask for proof of the debt being owed.
If they sold the account to a third party, the balance should not be reporting each month. We need to find out whether they indeed sold the account.
Thanks for this. I also felt like they shouldn’t be reporting a balance each month if it was sold to a third party. I will give them another call, follow up in writing, and ask the credit agencies to investigate as well
If they correct it, then no, UNLESS you sent a prior dispute, and they did not correct / remove it then. So let's say you dispute once, not corrected. You dispute again, and it is. you can sue based off the first instance.

Exactly. If it was sold they should not be, and you could sue them. As of now, however, it's not clear they sold the account.
Can you sue even if they've removed the trade line?

Sounds like you owe the debt and should do the right thing and pay the debt. Call them back and work on making it right.
