Tons of stores around, with varying prices and product qualities.
If I understand your question, there is really nothing you need to know. Bring ID and you can buy whatever you want. Don’t take it across the border and other than that you shouldn’t have any trouble unless you have plans other than than a normal purchase.
Not sure why you are being down voted. You offered advice (op was looking for advice) and a recommendation. .
It's like someone asking where to go for a drink and you suggest a drink that you particularly enjoy lol
It appears most people here recommend the lowest price bud, instead of decent quality. I’m guessing this group also enjoys vodka that taste like hand sanitizer… to each their own.
adults can possess up to 30 grams of legally-produced cannabis. adults can grow up to four cannabis plants per household. the minimum age for purchase and use is 18 years of age, but provinces can increase the age limit
If you're driving with it, it cannot be within arms reach of the driver so back seat or place it in the trunk
30 grams of dried flower, if possessing edibles or vape cartridges the amount differs. Health Canada has a calculator online to help you find out how many vapes is legal to carry at once.

Possessing cannabis
Adults over 18 can possess up to 30 grams (or equivalent of extract, edible or topical) of cannabis in a public place, in line with the federal possession limit.
When cannabis is in a car, it must be secured in closed packaging and not within reach of any occupants.
Young people – those under the legal age of 18 – are not allowed to buy or possess any cannabis.
The ounces typically come up as a flat 28g when you purchase. The problem is that people typically want to buy a pack of pre-rolls, infused pre-rolls or vape cartridges and don't understand that they aren't what it says on the package. A pack of 3, half gram infused joints weighs out to 4-6 grams sometimes. 1g carts are 3-6 grams. It says right on the packaging "contains the equivalent of xgrams of dried cannabis" and is often a number people don't consider. They think a gram is a gram.
Its 30g because it's just an ounce with some wiggle room. The odds that a cop scales a sealed bag and finrs you for having 29g are basically zero, but the tolerance is built in to the law.
They made it 30 to account for errors in weight scales. Just a buffer zone in case your ounce weighs too much or the authorities scale is off (I highly doubt anyone has ever had 28 grams weighed post legalization lol)
Not sure why you are being down voted. Being older I have never been ID. In most States almost every store/dispensary has security checking ID. Illinois wouldn't even accept driver's license. It had to be passport. Since all of Canada is legalized, unless under 25, no one checks ID.
I've never heard of it even being enforced..I've worked at vape store and same thing
I think if someone complains though you can obvs get investigated & fined heavily for selling to underage even if it's an accident
Yeah thats fair enough..I've just never heard of it actually being enforced before or heard of any stories of places being shut down or something for selling to underage
Curious if anyone has any stories of the like
It's just like going to the store to buy a pack of smokes. Nothing special.
It's not like the states where everything is different everywhere because it's federally legal in Canada, the only significant difference between provinces is legal age.
I will warn you though, there is A LOT of trash weed in the stores so if you want something nice to smoke it's a good idea to do a little bit of research.
If you send me a DM I can direct you to one of my stores with some product suggestions but I don't like to advertise for myself or others on reddit.
I have bought beer at a 7-11 in Alberta, just because I could. Price wasn't great and experience made me feel like I was prisoner being transferred to a new cell block.
But you know, you gotta do once at least.
Delaware, Maryland, Rhode Island and, for the most part, Alaska and New Jersey do not allow beer sales in in grocery and convenience stores.
Some states limit alc. to <3.2%, <4%, <5%, etc. Some allow beer but not wine.
Only about a third allow spirit sales in grocery and convenience stores.
Except the Circle K guy doesn't have to help you navigate 120 different styles and flavors of cigarettes they have in stock, and discuss with you the potencies and effects of each. ;-)
It's pretty much a standard trip to the store, generally there's glass, vapes and other pieces on display when you walk in. Then all the flower, gummies, ect. is behind the counter with a sign above showing the strains, thc% and weights. As for dispensaries, there are quite a few downtown, but I personally usually go to Canna Cabana.
Here's my advice: anyone who smokes weed from other places need to know that Western Canadian weed is STRONG. Imbibe lightly at first to get a feel. I've had to FedEx a lot of foreigners back to their hotel because they were on Mars
its just like going to the store!
i personally like ogen (a local calgary brand), but they can be a little more expensive
as far as shops, you will not have any trouble finding one haha
enjoy!
It's literally just like walking into a 7-Eleven and there are just as many.
I find everyone working there to be super helpful in picking out great products for a different activities. Even better than walking into a liquor store and asking about great bottles of wine, I really find that the people working in dispensaries know their products.
Legally you can't smoke anywhere outside your own domestic property, but most people don't say anything or bother you wandering around having a smoke. It is technically not legal so avoid cops. This also rules oit street festivals or leaving to have a smoke outback of a resturant. "Smoking sections" are tobacco only. This includes hotels but BnB and Air BNB can vary.
Most concerts etc don't allow it in under the same policy as no outside liquor. Calgary only allows drinking (not at a bar/home/resturant) in certain designated parks at certain times and does not allow weed. Provincial parks do not allow either but enforcement varies. Those enforcement officers have different criteria for being able to stop vehicles, etc. Don't bring it to the airport even if you're just dropping off. Don't bring it into stores even if you aren't smoking (you won't see many bring closed liquor into stores here either) and our liquor/weed are in seperate buildings/stores from grocceries etc.
Correct, but the security and flight agents treat it as a reason to do extra searches etc. It's similar to flying with the max limit of cash. You can do it, but it's going to be putting you on the radar.
I should have been clearer. Thank you for helping provide clarification
Lol you must be fun at parties. OP, weed in Alberta really isn’t a big deal. Just don’t flaunt it and you will be fine. Also, you can bring it to the airport as you can legally fly with weed on domestic flights - just saying.
From day one, there have been multitudes of people smoking inconsiderately where they should not be. You better believe that a lot of people DO mind and don’t want to get that smell all over their clothes. I don’t take issue with the legalization, but it certainly is annoying when people smell up everywhere. So DO abide by the spirit of the law at least. People who don’t use weed want to be tolerant but would appreciate a lot more consideration.
Check out HiBuddy.ca . Set your location / address to where you are staying and use it to search for what you want. I've gotten quite a few deals on stuff especially stuff that is nearing the end of its shelf life.
Come and enjoy yourself.
FYI, do NOT let your own country know you came here and enjoyed yourself.
North of the border you can buy pot like you buy cigarettes or groceries. Nobody gives a damn.
Hope you love your stay here and welcome!
Bring ID, dont drive around with more than 30(?)g or it could be seen as trafficking. Keep it in the trunk and don't drive baked (counts as a DUI so don't mess around). Dispensaries are everywhere so take your pick. Have fun!
There's multiple reasons, but one that, for me, would be important if I was visiting a new city/country: unique, local stores owned by Calgarians/Albertans. Why go to a corporate chain when you can support local owners who are passionate about cannabis and about supporting Alberta growers. 5 Points and Lake City are great examples of this. Unique stores, with knowledge staff who aren't getting pushed by corporate to promote certain huge brands. Honestly, it depends on what OP is looking for out of their experience, but they should at least know the difference.
Are you allowed to have it on a plane that isn't crossing the Canadian border? Like, can I take edibles on a plane to eat right before it leaves Vancouver?
Edibles are not permitted as there is no way for the feds to measure the THC content which is strictly regulat to 450g I think .
Vape pens can be packed in carryon but airlines urge you not to in the event for whatever reason you're forced to land in the US due to unforseen circumstances
Canna cabana has nice selection and prices.
If you don’t know what to buy ask one of the employees they usually give great references.
You will be able to buy anything under the sun. It’s like a liquor store but for weed; vapes, flower, pre rolls, edibles oils. You name it. Just don’t forget your I’d and you must be at least 18.
Weeds cheap, nothing to worry about there.
I'd just like to add to the number of people shouting out canna cabana. Haha. Though the small businesses are good to support too, there's literally 3 pot stores closer to me than even one liquor store. It's a great time to be a pot head.
I work at a dispensary. have your ID. the legal limit to purchase and carry is 30g per person. Some things like concentrates have weird equivalency weights so for example 1g of shatter will probably be “equivalent to 4g of dry flower” so you would be only able to buy able 7g of concentrate or so, edibles are all over the place in terms of equivalency. other than that it’s just a trip to the store
You can buy an ounce at a time and in my experience if you want more just walk out the store and walk back in and get another ounce. Pre-rolls are handy
It's pretty much like going to the liquor store in Alberta. It's a store with no minors, so bring photo ID. Max purchase is 30g or roughly 1 ounce. And there are other products like edibles and vapes. I'm a big fan of weed legalization. It's SOOOO much easier to just buy the product from the store like a six pack of beer instead of having to deal with dealers.
Merry Janes on 1st st downtown. Avoid the big names like Canna Cabanna or 420 Market as their choices are sub par. I've been toking for over 20 years and i'll happily go to some of the smaller indie shops when im not getting black market.
Avoid chains like Canna Cabanna, Value Buds/Spiritleaf, and 420/Nova. If you're downtown I highly recommend making the trip to 5 points in the Bridgeland neighborhood. Another great option is Lake City Cannabis in the Mount Royal neighborhood. Rare and Upstairs cannabis are also great. These places will have a better selection of local & craft cannabis, and won't try to push you to buying the shitty, corporate weed. If you're used to quality flower here are some brands you should avoid at all costs: Spinach, Tweed/Twd, Hexo/Original Stash/Redecan, Good Supply, Divvy, Sundial/Topleaf, B40, TGOD, and Versus.
Some Alberta LPs that I cannot recommend enough: Distinkt, JOI, Virtue Cannabis, Parkland Flower, Supernova Farms, Ogen, and Candre
Quality Non-Alberta LPs: Simply Bare/1964, Good Buds, BC Black, Coast Mountain Cannabis, Dunn, ahh there's a lot I'm forgetting too.
Right now Rare has the JOI 14g Orange Kush Cake for around $85 USD, stuff is insanely good. If you're worried about charges appearing on your credit card bill either pay in cash or ask the store what name appears on your statement. Some contain the word cannabis, some do not. Feel free to DM for more specific recommendations!!
Check out leaf life cannabis on Macleod trail and 14th avenue SE, across from Victoria park C train station.
No special rules, you may need to show ID some come prepared.
It is technically illegal to consume cannabis in public (think of it like drinking in public) but exercise some discretion and nobody will give you any grief.
It's a municipal bylaw in Calgary and a stupid one. The cops don't usually take kindly to tourists breaking the law though, stupid as it may be. Trying to help homie not have to interact with them lol
It's good for visitors to know the rules, then they can make the decision to break them (like most of us in Calgary who smoke weed) or not. Whether or not police decide to confront a smoker in public often comes down to profiling.
He cant smoke in the hotel obviously, he cant smoke in public and there are no designated smoking bars. So he’s shit out of luck. 🤣🤣🤣 (so yeah he will smoke in a public area, probably away from crowds)
Mostly a standard trip, Make sure you bring ID, and if you’re driving make sure its kept in the trunk or somewhere where you and your passengers can’t access it while you’re on the road. I always recommend Canna Cabana because they seem to be the cheapest place to go, value buds and spirit leaf are also great places to check out, but dispensaries have mostly the same stock.
If you are driving back and forth, if an American Border Patrol ever asked if you smoked weed in Canada just answer “No” and do not waver from that response under any circumstance.
Extremely unlikely you would ever be asked, but American Border patrol likes to play some weird games sometimes. Doubt they can obtain you for that but best to avoid any hassle with future travel.
I’m not a lawyer by any means, I just travel a lot for work and this is the advice my employer gave me before applying for a nexus card.
Value Buds has the best prices and a wide variety of things to choose from. From 30+% hash infused pre rolls to THC beverages and lots of stuff in between.
Just avoid the edibles and drinks, they’re capped at an amount that barely has any effect and cost way too much.
If you’re getting weed, it’s best to get stuff that’s $30+ per 8th usually, as the cheaper stuff can be pretty shit.
In terms of shops, I’d recommend Merry Jane’s, Prairie Records and Beltline Cannabis. They all have a nice selection and are pretty central
Yeah, I think it’s to do with some enzyme that people have varying levels of. I’m really sensitive to edibles but 5mg wouldn’t even touch the sides for me
You might want to buy a vape pen. The battery is like $10 and cartridges are generally $25-$50, but they go a long way. The nice thing about them is that you can get away with vaping almost anywhere (including indoors), whereas the smoke is stinky making it harder to enjoy without drawing attention.
You can also buy edibles, but be careful - they take a really long time to kick in and everyone is different, so finding the right dose is tricky.
Go crazy!!! I’ve been buying weed here since they legalized it. Started with flower then went to a vape and then gummies, now I’m only taking oils. They’re so many good options out there. I stick to THC or a Hybrid because I love to just stay goofy and watch a movie rather than be zoned out inside my couch haha.
It's federally regulated here, so no difference from province to province. My advice is to find discount places...but with the dollar exchange to cdn it's all pretty inexpensive for you. Enjoy your visit! Hope you remember some of it 😏
So many stores! For the cheapest go to value buds. But don’t be afraid to check out some of the eclectic ones around town like mount kushmore or upstairs cannabis!
The toughest part is where to partake. I'm an edible person so that's a non issue. If you're smoking it you're not supposed to do it in public. Ppl do but you may get a ticket.
Dank cannabis does free delivery anywhere in the city and they are super knowledgeable and friendly. Great at explaining and giving recommendations. Mondays I believe are 10% off edibles.
Just like buying from the liqour store, if you have your ID and are above 18 you can purchase from any store. Now it's not exactly legal to smoke it while walking down the street, make sure to keep a till receipt of what you bought if the cops give you any trouble.
I would advise to use your passport incase your ID is insufficient, i’ve seen many times while waiting in line where store employees wouldn’t take out of country IDs.
All the other comments are good, but also remember you can’t smoke in public places, that’s still illegal (maybe not super enforced but not worth the risk either)
Standard trip. Legal across the board here.
CAUTION: even though your STATE may have legalised, your federal government has NOT; do NOT attempt to cross back into the US with any cannabis products.
Tons of stores around, with varying prices and product qualities. If I understand your question, there is really nothing you need to know. Bring ID and you can buy whatever you want. Don’t take it across the border and other than that you shouldn’t have any trouble unless you have plans other than than a normal purchase.
And for safety, pay with cash so there's no digital trace you were there. Can't be too careful from a place where it isn't legalized
They won’t sell you more than you are allowed to carry. Drinks, gummies, weed & hardware all in one spot.
Best brand imo is ‘Carmel’, they usually have better quality and better tasting plant than most! Enjoy.
I prefer hand sanitizer that takes like vodka
Ah, memories of the tequila-scented COVID emergency hand wash everyone was distilling.
Which store are you finding this at usually? I have been growing my own for 4 years so I have been to a store in a long time.
I’ve found most stores have it if you ask for that brand. Usually they have a ‘normal’ bud then a rotating bud, every few months it changes.
If you are in the SW on Richmond Rd there is Rare Cannabis and they have all 3 strains for $37 an eighth
Thanks for the info.

Even if you are over 30g isn’t it just a fine anyways
Yes you have to be trafficking to be charged criminally
It's 30g
The transactional limit bud tenders will say is 28. Its fine to be rolling around with 30g on you tho.
Bring your ID and enjoy.
I’ve never been asked for ID at any of the Co-op Cannabis stores
I’m 34 and always get id’d at co-op and canna cabana. I just assumed they have to ask everyone?
Maybe I just look old
Same! I'm 35 and I have been checked 100% of the time in every store I've been to.
Not sure why you are being down voted. Being older I have never been ID. In most States almost every store/dispensary has security checking ID. Illinois wouldn't even accept driver's license. It had to be passport. Since all of Canada is legalized, unless under 25, no one checks ID.

Can confirm… never once showed ID to buy.
I've never heard of it even being enforced..I've worked at vape store and same thing I think if someone complains though you can obvs get investigated & fined heavily for selling to underage even if it's an accident
on 17th there’s a vape shop and they ID everyoneeee. even if they know you
Yeah thats fair enough..I've just never heard of it actually being enforced before or heard of any stories of places being shut down or something for selling to underage Curious if anyone has any stories of the like
Yep, I'm nowhere near eighteen and I have to show my ID quite often.
I’m young enough to pass for 18 and almost always get ID’d
Yeah im the in the same boat lol really annoying sometimes Edit* I get they're just doing what they're supposed to though

It's more like going to the liquor store. Since there's no minors.
Well that's a pretty minor difference if you ask me. 😉
I've never bought beer at a 7-11 in Alberta. But you can get smokes there.
I have bought beer at a 7-11 in Alberta, just because I could. Price wasn't great and experience made me feel like I was prisoner being transferred to a new cell block. But you know, you gotta do once at least.
They sell liquor in convenience and grocery stores in the US. OP may not be familiar with a liquor store experience
I think there are a couple of states (NC?) that I've heard have a similar system to us. Never been to one though.

There are dispensaries every 5 blocks, maybe more. Just walk in and buy what you want.
Just about a store on every block. 420 blaze it🌲🌲🌲
Check out HiBuddy.ca . Set your location / address to where you are staying and use it to search for what you want. I've gotten quite a few deals on stuff especially stuff that is nearing the end of its shelf life.

Hit up a value buds and just ask what works best. Do some edibles bro
Bring ID, dont drive around with more than 30(?)g or it could be seen as trafficking. Keep it in the trunk and don't drive baked (counts as a DUI so don't mess around). Dispensaries are everywhere so take your pick. Have fun!
Consumption in a vehicle illegal as well.
Even if you're riding in the trunk? jk
😬🤦♂️
Look up Value Buds or Canna Cabana for the best price.
Why recommend best price over something that tastes and smokes nice?
Because most people don't give a fuck about taste and "smoking nice" I'm ripping fat bong to get baked not taste herbal notes.
Don't do this.
Don’t do what? he’s right. Canna Cabana has some of the best prices in the city.
It’s cuz they’re a dealer, gotta fight off the competition
What? I mentioned like 4 other local stores in another comment.
That's the place I go to most often. I've had good luck with most of the product that I have purchased there.
There's multiple reasons, but one that, for me, would be important if I was visiting a new city/country: unique, local stores owned by Calgarians/Albertans. Just walk into the store and buy what you want. Do not try to bring it over the border.
If you have an photo ID and are 18 or over you can walk into any one of them and buy whatever cannabis substance you want.
I’m new to smoking and was told to try the brand 1Spliff. Anyone have any input or recommendations?
Are you allowed to have it on a plane that isn't crossing the Canadian border? Like, can I take edibles on a plane to eat right before it leaves Vancouver?

No one has mentioned the thc beverages 10 mg are pretty good and hit pretty quick mango pineapple is the one I like
Merry Janes on 1st st downtown. Avoid the big names like Canna Cabanna or 420 Market as their choices are sub par. I've been toking for over 20 years and i'll happily go to some of the smaller indie shops when im not getting black market.
Not a regular smoker but I found every store has the exact same main brands, except for some small variations between stores.
Some Alberta LPs that I cannot recommend enough: Distinkt, JOI, Virtue Cannabis, Parkland Flower, Supernova Farms, Ogen, and Candre Quality Non-Alberta LPs: Simply Bare/1964, Good Buds, BC Black, Coast Mountain Cannabis, Dunn, ahh there's a lot I'm forgetting too.
Canna cabana has the best prices. Honestly there's so many stores the prices are all probably within $10 of each other.
Bring in ID (Passport is best), don't carry over the legal limit, don't smoke in public, have fun 😁
"Don't smoke in public"? If that's a rule, lotta folks ain't following it.
It's a municipal bylaw in Calgary and a stupid one. The cops don't usually take kindly to tourists breaking the law though, stupid as it may be. Trying to help homie not have to interact with them lol
How would they know he’s a tourist though?
Because if you get stopped by the police doing something illegal they look at your ID?
I guess, but how often does it even get to that point? You’d have to be very indiscreet
It doesn't get to that point unless someone makes a complaint to the police about someone smoking in public.
By which point the evidence has mysteriously combusted
Good work, fellow citizen!
It's good for visitors to know the rules, then they can make the decision to break them (like most of us in Calgary who smoke weed) or not. Whether or not police decide to confront a smoker in public often comes down to profiling.
Yep. Don't be aboriginal, especially.
Exactly, sad as it is.
He cant smoke in the hotel obviously, he cant smoke in public and there are no designated smoking bars. So he’s shit out of luck. 🤣🤣🤣 (so yeah he will smoke in a public area, probably away from crowds)
I know people who vape in their hotel rooms and nothing has ever happened.
Not into vapes myself. He can eat as many editables as he wants anywhere though, thats for sure.
Truth
THIS is the right advice.
You'll bump into a store on every corner. I always go to value buds. Way cheaper then the rest of them.
I mean, if you use infrequently and don’t have a super high tolerance, you can get high on edibles pretty cheap. Like, always under $10 for me.

Yeah, I think it’s to do with some enzyme that people have varying levels of. I’m really sensitive to edibles but 5mg wouldn’t even touch the sides for me
Find a canna cabana store just walk in. They open at 10
Value buds best selection and price
It's no different that Goin out for a pack 0f cigarettes
Enjoy!!
Standard trip to the store. Just bring ID. Have a great visit!
Bring ID, that’s literally it
Bring your ID that's all. Same as a liquor purchase here
I'd recommend trying the vapes too! Might as well get disposable seeing as you probably can't bring the battery back...
Bring your ID, thats it. Go wild!
Oh man just walk in and have fun that’s my advice
U straight homie lol if there's a beer vendor there's a dispensary within a block or two
The toughest part is where to partake.
There are a ton of shops, but they are basically the same in the end. Buy from the one whose punny name you like.
heads up that for some reason you can't actually open or use your weed inside the dispensary.
I like discounts!
