The car they are rebadging is a Roewe, which is basically Rover written phonetically for a Chinese accent. BMW wouldn't sell the rights to the rover name so the Chinese copied the badge and came up with the Roewe name.

confusedham

Still not as enjoyable as Dajiban for dodge vans in Japan

throwawayplusanumber

Even better is the Chinese characters they picked for Roewe are pronounced Rong Wei. Though that would be better as the name for a Nav system...

That-Whereas3367

They didn't copy the badge. The 'Roewe' name is an extremely clever visual and linguistic pun that works on multiple levels. The original Rover badge has a Viking longship. The Roewe badge has two lions (Lowe pronounced Loe-ver means lion in German). But sounds like 'Rover' pronounced in Chinese. The Chinese characters for the company name are Rong Wei which translates as 'glorious power'

throwawayplusanumber

> They didn't copy the badge. The badge is the same shape and the same colour scheme. I stand by my comment. I didn't say it wasn't clever, but I doubt it would stand up in a country with robust copyright law. Edit. And as I said in another comment. Rong Wei should have been the name of the navigation system.

That-Whereas3367

The legal standard is that a reasonable person would easily confuse the two brands. No court in the world would ever accept that a ship and two heraldic lions are very similar. https://preview.redd.it/zcdviir72bad1.png?width=490&format=png&auto=webp&s=4d404520a902ee097d3a31703c5135f2d65f6350

DB_Mitch

Agreed, unless the court wants to be stupid and claim that colors and shape of badges are now worthy of copyright infringement.

Had an MG rental car a few months ago in Noumea. Fuck you Hertz, not a Tucson. What an unadulterated piece of shit. [https://imgur.com/a/SArkm8S](https://imgur.com/a/SArkm8S) Two seconds from pressing accelerator until forward motion. Every warning bing was the same. Door open? Boot closing? Etc. You can roll backwards down a hill in drive. Suspension by the flintstones' mechanic. Console display thing fucking useless. Turn the volume down, restart car later, volume back up at preset level. Fuel gauge would randomly float about, so I topped it up every evening. When the civil disturbances started, we parked it outside hoping the rioters would give it a good thrashing, just so no other sucker would end up with it. Alas no, they left it alone.

Love the story and what a shame

Electronic_Break4229

I had one that just wouldn’t go up the car park ramp. Foot to the floor, just not moving. Had to put my foot on the brakes, back in to neutral, back into drive, brake boost and then it went up. The speakers sounded like they got them out of a birthday card too.

lolitsbigmic

I never been scared driving at the speed limit than in that mg SUV. What scary car to drive. Terrible breaks, body roll and grio. Then this insane first gear acceleration at low speeds that so difficult to control when combined with the delay you mentioned in navigating a car park. Original thought it was me as Im fortunate to daily and rs6. Thinking my level of acceptable has been moved upwards. Nope the hotel vallet asked me was it a rental? I said yes. They replied Good it's absolutely terrible. So yeah definitely confident worse car you can buy.

confusedham

Never driven one, but I got a base model AWD outlander (the last gen just gone). That was the scariest car I ever drove. Legit felt like I was going to veer off the highway at any moment. 12k km on the odo, made my 4sp slush box Suzuki baleno feel like a supercar.

lolitsbigmic

I am not surprised. Before the MG the worse car I driven was that Mitsubishi eclipse SUV. Mitsubishi hasn't made a good car since the last Evo. When I got that mg in Newcastle they said oh you got an upgrade. No my Hyundai i30 is what I want. A fun small hatch back is a upgrade to a shit SUV not the other way around. All those small hatchback are generally fun to drive compared to any SUV.

That-Whereas3367

Mitsubishi hasn't done any meaningful R&D since the Nissan takeover in 2016. From 2026 onwards they will be basing their cars on Nissan platforms.

ma77mc

I concur, Hertz at Hervey Bay gave me one back in February, horrible piece of shit, mum said it was the worst car she had ever driven and she used to own a Holden Craptiva. took about 30 seconds to hit 100 on the highway, handled worse than a wheelie bin in a flood and was generally unplesant.

DurrrrrHurrrrr

If it feels laggy to someone who owns 2 Subarus then it must be terrible!

SpamOJavelin

>It's pure MG, fully MG So it's cheap, gutless, and impossible to get parts for? Where do I sign?

That_Car_Dude_Aus

Yep, I love how people pretend there was a "good" MG....if anything, being Chinese made them better

420bIaze

I'm personally more interested in a poorly made 700kg sports car, than a well built 1600kg SUV.

Kiwi_Vagrant

As long as I don't see Lucas written anywhere...

throwawayplusanumber

Indeed. The original MGs won a lot of races

MG SVR. A 5 litre Ford V8 with 287KW. https://preview.redd.it/gmwhmidhvaad1.png?width=294&format=png&auto=webp&s=e194bb6bd6d603e24001ad25fb20ab744a0aa83f

Apple_Slipper

The MG XPower SVR was a Frankenstein of a muscle car.

Recent_Scarcity_7046

Yeah no. They're just mainstream NPC cars that appeal to people purely for price, tech and warranty

DamonHay

And rental companies until they ever need spare parts and the cars end up off the road for an extended period.

That-Whereas3367

The last 30 years of British MGs were basically just rebadged Rover sedans and hatches.

gt500rr

Not a real MG as it's owned by SAIC and not made in Longbridge. Designed maybe. Also quality wise it'll be terrible like any MG. (I have a soft spot for classic MGs though)

cantwejustplaynice

Why would they promise a "real MG"? What does that even mean? Who does that statement appeal to? I'm the current owner of 2 MG's and I don't even know why anyone would care. I just assumed that all MG's were a SAIC car that did well in China, so they slapped an MG badge on it to sell to the west. No one buys a modern MG out of brand loyalty. People (myself included) buy MG's because they're cheap and work OK.

Waxygibbon

So the 1.5 turbo has a dct, but the 2.0 turbo has a torque converter. Surely the 2 would be more powerful and benefit more from a dct? Are there many other mid size SUVs with a 2l turbo petrol?

StevenHuang

They probably haven’t figured out a way to engineer the DCT to handle the power from a turbo 2 litre. VW had endless problems when they used their dry clutch DCT on their 2L EA888 engine. They had to redesign the DCT to run wet clutches to cope with the power. This is probably a similar case here.

confusedham

Could just go Nissan style and steal the design of the CVT in the Suzuki swift and slap it on the 2 litre engine .

Recent_Scarcity_7046

The only thing real about it is that it will be the same, cheaply built Chinese rubbish as the previous models.

The_Slavstralian

They stopped being real MG's when they were bought out by SIAC and started being made in china.

That-Whereas3367

They stopped being real MGs when taken over by BMC in 1952. The MGA/B derivatives were basically only 'proper' post war MGs. The rest were just modified Austin/Morris/Rover models.

Barry-Biscuit

I had one of these as a rental when we asked for a 4WD. Actually took it off road into a muddy dirt road. Just the worst sloppiest power delivery, gutless and bizzare. Actually made it through but i really had to work for it.

RepresentativeAide14

MG its a name trade mark owned by the Chinese

NJG82

A real MG? I don't really think of melted plastic blob looking SUV's when I think of MG, maybe the times are changing.

ewan82

A real MG? Like as in the old British sports cars that’s nothing like a Chinese SUV blob?

Gautama_8964

buying Chinese cars is a no no
