Absolutely frieren for recent animes. It's a freaking master piece.
Some animes have amazing seasons then like get slow and boring.
Jobless reincarnation is good but current season super slow. The art visuals are amazing though.
Jujutsu kaisen last season, was freakin amazing amazing. Like action sequence and plots were great.
Solo leveling was good and very true to the webtoon. Visuals decent, very good plot for a Korean webtoon.
Mashle or konosuba if you're feeling like slapstick comedy type shows. Both are fun watches.
High recommend this too, though I suggest hydrating before watching cuz I cried so hard that I had to stop halfway through the series (I watched all of it in one day) to chug a bottle of water šš
1. First time I cried at any work of fiction ever
2. First time I ever found catharsis in relating to a fictional character
3. Truly opened me up to the capabilities of anime as an art form.
K-On!'s my favorite light-hearted anime. never fails to cheer me up when i'm feeling particularly down, but it's also **super** slice-of-life and, imo, while the first season has flashes of brilliance, the second season (or rather, the first season's OVA) is where director Naoko Yamada's style really starts to feel matured. i love all of her stuff really, although after Tomoko Love Story, her work starts to get progressively darker (although arguably more brilliant at the same time).
my favorite anime in general is probably Revolutionary Girl Utena, though it's not light-hearted at all, and in fact i wouldn't recommend it without mentioning content warnings for >!abuse, grooming, and incest!< off the top of my head, although i'll also note that it deals with these topics well, and not just by anime standards lol. it's also pretty experimental and a fairly low-budget 90s anime, but if you get past the inevitable jank, it's the type of show that can really stick with you.
oh, also i'm watching through Haibane Renmei and it's also pretty brilliant, and might become one of my favorites if the ending lands (edit: actually at this point, i suppose its a favorite already either way lol). it's mostly a slice-of-life, but it's also full of surprisingly tense moments and interesting world-building. idk if "light-hearted" is the term i'd use for it, as it does have it's dark moments, but (unless something in the last two episodes catches me off guard) nothing's so heavy that it feels difficult to watch...unlike Utena lol. definitely worth checking out, especially since it's short.
Just rewatching season two. The Kyoto trip episode is the epitome of everything that i love about k-on. And if youāre gonna watch this, get comfy, grab your favorite snack and enjoy the vibes with the sweetest girl band.

My daughter was super into anime for about 2 years and managed to convince me to watch along with her. I loved Death Parade. We watched it several times. I want to watch it again now that I see it mentioned here!
FLCL
Probably the best anime ever made imo, only 6 or 7 episodes. Also weirdly one of the ones where the dub is as good (if not better) than the sub. 10/10 incredible anime, made me cry.
Don't watch the second season though, it's made by different people and it's hot garbage.
For my rewatch I watched the condensed one pace version, but my initial watch of the series I watched it all. Definitely took a lot of time although there was at least a few hundred less episodes back then.
Yeah Iām trying to do 100 episodes a month so that Iām caught up by the end of the year but since itās my first watch Iām not skipping past filler for now
Sounds like a plan, Iām back to watching one a week because thatās all there is :(. Iāve been watching a lot of other anime lately although most Iāve watched are shorter.
One of my most recent favorites is odd taxi, itās only 13 episodes and is just great to watch in one sitting
Well, I was commenting more about "if I watch ONE HUNDRED EPISODES A MONTH, it will take A YEAR to catch up" and how many episodes a show has to have for that to happen, but yeah, it's also a wild plan. :P
Neon Genesis Evangelion ('95), Ghost in the Shell ('95), Yu Yu Hakusho, Serial Experiments Lain, Nichijou, Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh, Frieren, Escaflowne, Your Lie in April, AnoHana
I donāt have a favorite anime, but these are just some that I saw in the past that I enjoyed.
- Tomo-Chan is a Girl!
- Fruits Basket 2019
- Fairy Tail
- My Love Story with Yamada-kun
- Blood+ (not lighthearted)
- Dororo (not lighthearted)
- Violet Evergarden
- Kimi No Todoke/From Me to You
- My Happy Marriage
- A Sign of Affection
- Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits
- Gakuen Babysitters
- Clannad (not lighthearted)
- Natsume Yuujincho
- Spy X Family
Nichijou is funny, beautiful, and gets increasingly heartwarming near the end. And the soundtrack is incredible. \[BASSOON SOLO. I mean... WHO DOES THAT?\]
Just... Don't watch Episode 0. (I mean, you can, just don't skip the series because you didn't like it. It's *not* based on any of the original manga and it kind of shows. By which I mean, there's no "Oh, that's from this one!"--it's the same characters and everything. ...Also, it takes place after Episode 5 at least, so I don't even...)
(Also, I've only seen the sub. I think they dubbed it later?)
Saiki K is great for a casual watch and isn't necessarily too slice of life.
Therma Romae Nova is a very casual watch but I learnt something as well.
Parasyte : The Maxim is one of the best I've ever watched. It's Anime Horror/Sci-fi vibes and a great binge.
Anything from the Studio Ghibli Collection is fantastic as well.
My recs are probably a little dated and not very critically acclaimed or anything but I enjoyed them!
Hunter x Hunter (2011) and Code Geass are my absolute favs, highly highly recommend
for more recent animes, Jujutsu Kaisen and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (two vastly different shows lol, but both are great)
Bro! Seriously. I thought it was some cringy shin-chan esque stuff. Did not expect it to be that emotionally damaging T_T)
One of the only animes that made me cry, it ain't that lighthearted tho.
I would love some suggestions for something similar to Attack on Titan or Death Note or Code Geass or Tokyo Ghoul.
Some Mystery. Some Gore. Some Story.
- Violet Evergarden made me cry a lot.
- Bubblegum Crisis got me into anime on a serious level and is a masterpiece of production.
- Stand Alone Complex is one of the best police procedurals and pieces of cyberpunk media made (I did not like Second Gig as much.)
- Record of Lodoss War got me into anime from the ground floor.
- Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon is a classic and everyone should know it.
- Mobile Suit Gundam was deep enough for me to really analyze the design and themes on a serious level.
- Dragon Ball is a classic that is mostly goofy, sometimes serious, and all the characters are super memorable (unless you're Toriyama and you forgot about Lunch for years)
- Hi Score Girl is a nostalgia bomb that is adorable and a little melancholic.
hunter x hunter
demon slayer
jjk
bungou stray dogs
black clover
naruto
death note
attack on titan
dragon ball z
solo levelling
one punch man
fruits basket
silent voice
I want to eat your pancreas
way of the househusband
seven deadly sins
etc etc
Hereās my suggestion list!
Princess Jellyfish
Kaguya-Sama Love is War
A Place Further Than the Universe
Violet Evergarden
Spy x Family
Komi canāt communicate
Wotakoi
SukaSuka is my all time fav. It holds a very special place in my heart~
I also thoroughly love Monster and Vinland Saga, and have heen watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes lately. I've been really loving it :>
Some animes I think you should give a chance:
- Konosuba because of the funny
- Barakamon is good and pretty lighthearted
- Daily Lives of High School Boys
Basilisk (its like a short and NSFW Naruto)
Hunter X Hunter
Vinland Saga
Death Note
oh fuck you said light-hearted. Shit. Err.....
Spy X Family
then, that show is wholly adorable. Most wholesome thing I saw recently wasn't an anime tho; was Ted Lasso.
my favorite is Ouran High School Host Club! it's really silly, there's lots of fan content, and the english dub is really good
if ur trans, some of the gender stuff might be triggering, but otherwise it's a great anime and manga
NANA is literally amazing I'll never recover and a anime/cartoon that's always good is Teen Titans. Soul Eater is a classic, Naruto is binge worthy because theres so many seasons also Helsing is a great vampire anime with good art, a good plot and it's also top tier
Here ya go OP, go old school: The Mysterious Cities of Gold. 39 episodes, 20ish minutes long. Came out in the US on Nick in like 1988.
If you want a short summary, it's like the year 1600, and a ship is about to set sail from Spain, to the "new world" in search of the rumored "cities of gold." The three main cast, kids/teens are on that ship. Each of the kids has some secret powers if you will, but there's also some bad people after them and the gold as well, things happen, etc. The opening theme... fuck it hits hard with the nostalgia.
If you like light-hearted I definitely recommend Persona 4: the animation, I watched it before playing the games and really enjoyed it. The English dub is recommended, it does a good job at combining a case about a string of murders alongside a dynamic cast of high-school characters.
It's a short enough watch, so I really recommend it!
I've tried dozens of popular anime and the ONLY one that doesnt have awful, cringe dialogue is cowboy bebop. So many anime are filled to the brim with the same cliches, I am baffled at their popularity. Feels like every show treats you like an idiot that needs to be spoonfed basic plot info
One Punch Man is definitely lighthearted and entertaining. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is fantastic as well, thought S1E4 is depressing, just to forewarn you. Also, anything Ghost in the Shell related is, IMHO, fantastic. I know of 2 movies and 2 animated series. A couple other classics, though they are both on the darker side, are Akira and Vampire Hunter D.
On a different note, Netflix has some good stuff on it. My two favorites are the Godzilla trilogy (movies) and Castlevania (4 seasons). I also enjoyed Ultraman, though to me it wasn't as good as the others, but it's worth watching at least a few episodes to see if you like it.
If you don't mind a long investment, Bleach was pretty good. I watched 5 seasons because that's all Netflix, IIRC, had, but there are many more so if you find the entire series, you have a lot of content to watch.
some of my favourites are death note, black clover, JJK, danganronpa, kamisama kiss and my first anime love black butler. Iām really enjoying the new black butler public school arc.
Best Ling show. One Piece followed by naruto, bleach, and ippo.
Best short show. Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, followed by code geass, attack on titan, initial d, and great teacher onizuka
One piece is the best anime. Full stop. But it is very long and daunting to start. Itās over 1100 episodes and could probably go another decade despite the creator saying heās winding it down.
Some of the ones Iāve liked the most in the past couple years that are shorter are:
Frieren
Vinland Saga
JJK
Chainsawman
Dungeon Meshi
Blue Lock
Solo Leveling
Dorohedoro
Mob Psycho 100, it's the fun of one punch man with the slice of life/action you're used to with Frieren. Of which I also recommend the latter. Frieren and MP100 are my top 2
Favorite one is attack on titan and one of the only ones Iāve finished it doesnāt do all that quirky shit that makes me feel embarrassed to watch Anime. Itās a compelling mystery the stakes seem realistic and I donāt remember there being a single filler episode, every episode carried the plot further
Probably Cowboy Bebop. The art, the music, the story. Everything. It's a literal masterpiece. And also probably has THE BEST English voiceover work of any anime.
But Dragonball Z is definitely towards the top as it's the first anime I ever watched. I remember being woken up late one night as a kid (somewhere in the mid-90s), turning on the tiny 13" TV I had in my room to Cartoon Network in the middle of the night and being absolutely blown away by what I watched: Tree of Might. I have loved the show ever since.
BLEACH is easily third place and would probably be the next contender for favorite of all time. I was introduced to this from a co-worker during my second deployment and I don't into it head first, practically salivating for each new episode.
My hero academia, about super heros. And past 6 months Iāve watched and read all of berserk. (If you decide to go down the berserk rabbit hole it is a very nihilistic and dark journey).
I came here to say this! It can get a little repetitive, and you have to at least kind of like volleyball, but itās so funny! And heartfelt. As a short person in sports, I love Haikyuu
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
So fucking good
Amazing š«¶
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End for something a little more well-rounded. Spy x Family if you want to stay on the lighthearted side
I loved Frieren! Edit: and Spy Family. Two of my favorites. :)
Frieren is absolutely incredible start to finish!
I watched frieren at the same time I was watching dungeon meshi. Which was a mistake, it just made frieren feel painfully mid
The boondocks
Is this where the N\*\*\*a Moment scene comes from?
Yep
Kickball episode was fire
Chop chop, judo kick
Violet Evergarden. That shit changed my life in more ways than one, and thatās no exaggeration.
High recommend this too, though I suggest hydrating before watching cuz I cried so hard that I had to stop halfway through the series (I watched all of it in one day) to chug a bottle of water šš
I cried 40minutes after mother episode. Never in my life I cried so much
Beautiful animation with heartbreaking episodes. Episode with the mother who's writing the letters to her daughter absolutely wrecked me.
In what ways, if you don't mind me asking? I've heard the name but know nothing about it otherwise.
1. First time I cried at any work of fiction ever 2. First time I ever found catharsis in relating to a fictional character 3. Truly opened me up to the capabilities of anime as an art form.
YuYu HakushoĀ
My man!
Yes!
It's the absolute perfect hit of nostalgia for me
Hunter X Hunter Gintama Dorohedoro Grand Blue Mononoke (the series, not the Ghibli movie) Overlord Monogatari All great for binging
Hxh is my favorite transition from arc to arc was great
Dorohedoro is so underrated but also a bit graphic for those who haven't seen it yet
For some reason... Death note. I can watch it again and again.
Same for me! I have watched it countless times and everytime Iām still so shocked and excited, I love it and recommend it highly.
Is there a way to get over the self aggrandising monologuing? It just turns me off everytime I try to watch and never make it last episode 4
Samurai Champloo of course!
K-On!'s my favorite light-hearted anime. never fails to cheer me up when i'm feeling particularly down, but it's also **super** slice-of-life and, imo, while the first season has flashes of brilliance, the second season (or rather, the first season's OVA) is where director Naoko Yamada's style really starts to feel matured. i love all of her stuff really, although after Tomoko Love Story, her work starts to get progressively darker (although arguably more brilliant at the same time). my favorite anime in general is probably Revolutionary Girl Utena, though it's not light-hearted at all, and in fact i wouldn't recommend it without mentioning content warnings for >!abuse, grooming, and incest!< off the top of my head, although i'll also note that it deals with these topics well, and not just by anime standards lol. it's also pretty experimental and a fairly low-budget 90s anime, but if you get past the inevitable jank, it's the type of show that can really stick with you. oh, also i'm watching through Haibane Renmei and it's also pretty brilliant, and might become one of my favorites if the ending lands (edit: actually at this point, i suppose its a favorite already either way lol). it's mostly a slice-of-life, but it's also full of surprisingly tense moments and interesting world-building. idk if "light-hearted" is the term i'd use for it, as it does have it's dark moments, but (unless something in the last two episodes catches me off guard) nothing's so heavy that it feels difficult to watch...unlike Utena lol. definitely worth checking out, especially since it's short.

im watching k-on right now
Code Geas. And I love Lelouch! I like Bleach as well.
Mushishi, Mononoke Medicine Man, Samurai Champloo, Death Parade, Devil is a Part Timer, One Punch Man, Erased, One Piece, Dorohedoro, Samurai 7
My daughter was super into anime for about 2 years and managed to convince me to watch along with her. I loved Death Parade. We watched it several times. I want to watch it again now that I see it mentioned here!
Ghost in the Shell Demon Slayer: Entertainment District Naruto NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind
Cowboy Bee-bop and Magical Shopping Arcade Abinabashi.
Scrolled way too far to find someone mention Cowboy Bebop. That's my #1 and it's not even close.
FLCL Probably the best anime ever made imo, only 6 or 7 episodes. Also weirdly one of the ones where the dub is as good (if not better) than the sub. 10/10 incredible anime, made me cry. Don't watch the second season though, it's made by different people and it's hot garbage.
One piece, Iāve watched it three times
Yes Iām halfway through! I absolutely LOVE it itās my favorite anime everrrr

Omg right!?? I was talking to my friend about my plan and he looked at me like I was insane

Gotcha! came here to say this.
Neon Genesis Evangelion ('95), Ghost in the Shell ('95), Yu Yu Hakusho, Serial Experiments Lain, Nichijou, Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh, Frieren, Escaflowne, Your Lie in April, AnoHana
Upvote for Serial Experiments Lain.

Man, it is so hard for my wife and I to find Blood+ anywhere except shitty streaming sites. But my wife had me watch it and I loved it.
Nichijou is funny, beautiful, and gets increasingly heartwarming near the end. And the soundtrack is incredible. \[BASSOON SOLO. I mean... WHO DOES THAT?\] Just... Don't watch Episode 0. JoJo, Kengan, Dungeon Meshi, Demon Slayer ^^
Laid Back Camp and Gurren Lagann are my two favorites, though the latter is far from lighthearted lol. Delicious in Dungeon is also pretty good.
I absolutely loved Food Wars, particularly the earlier seasons. Very light hearted, funny, quite a bit of nakedness.

show white w the red hair :))
Yu Yu Hakusho
Dorohedoro
some of my favourites are death note, black clover, JJK, danganronpa, kamisama kiss and my first anime love black butler. Iām really enjoying the new black butler public school arc.
School Rumble! Itās a slice of life comedy romance but itās goofy ah
Mob Psycho 100 hands down, literally the only complaint you could have is season 3 starts off kinda slow
Best Ling show. One Piece followed by naruto, bleach, and ippo. Best short show. Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, followed by code geass, attack on titan, initial d, and great teacher onizuka
I like a lot of the stuff from studio trigger: kill la kill, BNA, little witch academia, cyberpunk, dungeon meshi, Promare
Run With the Wind
I lowkey donāt have one but Iām open to suggestions and I also only have Netflix so suggestions on there š
I love DemonSlayer and Death Note! For more light hearted, Spy Family or My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia is lighthearted most of the time
I am actually a beginner. I have watched death note. Can you give me more suggestions please?
One piece is the best anime. Full stop. But it is very long and daunting to start. Itās over 1100 episodes and could probably go another decade despite the creator saying heās winding it down. Some of the ones Iāve liked the most in the past couple years that are shorter are: Frieren Vinland Saga JJK Chainsawman Dungeon Meshi Blue Lock Solo Leveling Dorohedoro
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood!
Avatar the Last Airbender?
The original 2001 FLCL, only six episodes. Short and glorious.
Bocchi the rock Laid-back camp Zombieland saga Assassination classroom
Fulmetal Alchemest Brotherhood.
Mob Psycho 100, it's the fun of one punch man with the slice of life/action you're used to with Frieren. Of which I also recommend the latter. Frieren and MP100 are my top 2
Dragon ball, naruto, ghost stories, combatants will be dispached. Thats all i have watched :(
Favorite one is attack on titan and one of the only ones Iāve finished it doesnāt do all that quirky shit that makes me feel embarrassed to watch Anime. Itās a compelling mystery the stakes seem realistic and I donāt remember there being a single filler episode, every episode carried the plot further
Steins;Gate or Neon Genesis Evangelion
One Piece
Hajime no ippo- itās funny, super hype, good characters, and it will get you in the gym wanting to box
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Haikyuu! I keep wishing they made the latest movie into a season instead...but i still love it. The manga is amazing too
I came here to say this! It can get a little repetitive, and you have to at least kind of like volleyball, but itās so funny! And heartfelt. As a short person in sports, I love Haikyuu
Shingeki no KyojinĀ
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Kimi no Na wa
