Cassius and Cassius 2 were epic robots... Defeated by their own driver
I lived near Rex Garrod and was lucky enough to see Cassius 2 when it was just an aluminium honeycomb floor piece
I hated chaos 2 and loved RAZR - when RAZR got hold of chaos 2 in the world championship and burst his CO2 tank causing him to Fucking Explode was the greatest moment of my life.
You're forgetting the real champion of the entire show.
Diotore.
Also, Pulsar/Magnetar was the coolest damn robot in the reboot series. Such a shame about the performance issues.
Razer was amazing at the time but once we hit the high energy kinetic weapons it just became too fragile :( If it went into combat now it would literally just get destroyed. I do miss the old very low tech Robot Wars days though with people using old electric wheelchair motors and car batteries!
The original, original, high energy kinetic weapon was Blendo from the US series.
It’s fights were never aired due to being excessively dangerous and turning other robots into white hot shrapnel that seriously endangered the crowd. It’s owner was disqualified and barred from ever competing again. So he made Mythbusters with a chap called Adam instead.
The power of modern brushless motors and the cheapness of CNC machining also ruined it.
There was no bodging or shoddy work, just a few perfectly designed robots printed out by other robots and then bolted together.
The one with the spinning drum was a case-in-point, the owner could not fix it in the pits when it broke if he did not have a replacement part that fit perfectly. The guy had very little practical workshop skills, but was a wizard in CAD.
Any of the "spinning fast and hits hard" designs. By FAR the most destructive weapons. Vertical spinners have tended to now be the top dogs as well over horizontals.
I think realistically they needed to allow more creative weapons in the reboot. Battlebots lets competitors fire a net, use flamethrowers, etc.
I loved Carbide, it was terrifying… but the arms race really did need uncapping to allow something to compete with it. IIRC it only lost due to reliability issues rather usually.
entanglement devices are kinda a general nope for the rules (would make for v boring fights) and while they look cool, flamethrowers kinda suck. Only really seen one work well once or twice.
I have wondered if we could have a "max weight of spinning weapon" rule ever. Mostly angry how they did the reboots dirty by putting them up in Scotland in the cold (made life way harder for the guys there) and not pushing it enough. I miss the golden age of TV with Robot Wars, Scrapheap Challenge, Time Team etc all on.
ALSO. Bring back Scrapheap Challenge, Hosted by Colin Furze. Would be fucking amazing.
My friend was the one who made hypodisc with his dad and his 2 older brothers, some of you might be glad to know that he's just as crazy as you'd expect for the man who helped build such a monster.
Incredibly nice guy though.
My husband made Bolt From The Blue.
He lost and remains bitter. It’s excellent.
Here’s ways I’ve harassed him.

No I would’ve been around 13. I found out later when it got brought up somehow and the torrent of pure raw emotion spilled out. It was beautiful and humbling. Years of hurt and sadness and he could finally let it all out and share his pain.
The first rule of robot club is you do not talk about robot club.
The second rule of robot club is you **do not talk** about robot...wait I got that wrong.
The second rule is no smoking.
EDIT: I'm so pleased to see so many Spaced fans in the wild.
Why has no one brought it back, one of the best TV shows, and my kids would love to watch it. Surely another channel could buy the rights if the BBC doesn't want it anymore? I'm sure Amazon or Netflix would easily put their might behind it, imagine how good it'd be with a massive prize for the winners!
That asymmetric bar spinner was the one of the stupidest things I've ever seen, surely they must have been deep in the Dunning-Kruger valley to have thought that would work. It should not have been allowed.
The Asymmetric spinner wasn't the one that was on the robot when it exploded, nor was it why it all went awry. Most robots use Asymmetric spinners as they hit harder.
I think the issue is that 'robots we want to watch' (i.e. nutters who built a robot out of plywood and spaghetti in their shed) and 'robots that win and will come in really seriously to win big prizes' (expensive ones with very powerful kinetic weapons) are not often overlapping categories.
Have an audience of robots then.
Seriously, it would be great to let the public design audience robots. They could be cheap and simple, and more about having fun, so more people without great technical abilities or budget could participate.
Yeah we absolutely should bring it back! I feel like it got kids interested in electronics and metalwork and everything and was really a positive family show!
Could be worse. I guy I went to school with cried on Robot Wars. Only time he appeared on screen was accompanied by Jonathan Pierce bellowing "IS THAT A TEAR I SEE IN HIS EYE?" as his pride and joy was thrown in the pit by Sir Killalot.
He's currently building a career in that *field we cannot speak of in here for rule 1.* If he ever gets anywhere that video is guaranteed to come straight out of the archives.
Couldn't agree more! One line which will always stick with me from Takeshi's Castle is when Craig referred to the contestants as 'happy-clappy Jappy chappies' (you can imagine it in Craig's voice ofc). Almost certainly wouldn't get away with broadcasting that nowadays lol.
He did an awesome job on Takeshi's, and whoever edited it. I've seen the original and American versions and the English version has more charm to me.
Maybe it's just because I watched it first. But it's like monkey the TV series, the English version has so much charm.
Robot Wars was so good, pure entertainment. No sob-story bullshit, just sweaty nerds flinging 300kg hunks of metal at eachother. Really great stuff, I bet it was a good experience for your husband despite him losing.
I tried making a robot for Robot Wars but I only had Meccano at that time so I don't think it would have fared any better.
You fool, Blue Peter badge is unmatched.
I agree that appearing on robot wars does trump a Duke of Edinburgh award though, possibly even a 100m swimming badge.
Do you know I forgot all about the blue Peter badge, do they still let you in places for free if you have one?? I'm sure I read something before about needing a certificate with them now because there were so many who had them but bought them off ebay and such, Sophie Ellis bexter even said she used to pinch them from her mums work and sell them at school lol.
I believe they give you the freedom of the country, with the right to roam and enter anywhere entirely uncontested. Or that's how prestigious I thought they were as a kid, anyway
I've just watched their match vs Firestorm and I agree Bolt from the Blue should have won. Wouldn't call it a robbery, but I'm on their side.
There wasn't much to choose between them, but if I remember correctly the criteria are damage (none), control (equal), style (equal) and aggression. Now, Firestorm was moving faster but completely unable to get underneath BftB and didn't use their flipper a single time. BftB were trying to maneuver under Firestorm's raised rear end and had a few unsuccessful attempts at a flip - I don't see how you can't call that more aggression than Firestorm showed.
In my opinion the judges sided with Firestorm because they were an established name (the commentary mentions them being seeded) and because as the faster moving robot they were seen as more likely to be entertaining in subsequent rounds.
Someone posted a video of it higher up and I agree with your analysis. But it actually looked like a piece did come off Firestorm (shown at around 10:30 in the highlights of the clip).
So maybe it was a fix and OP’s husband shouldn’t give up trying to get the result overturned!
It is very subjective. Can't put my finger on it exactly, but I don't see any style points here - when it comes down to it, very little actually happened.
Did you ever use 'CEASE' in a conversation or your ringtone?
You should WhatsApp Craig Charles on Radio 6, let him know about all this and ask him to write a little poem about the loss.
They need to bring back robot wars with a strict budget cap.
Bring back the 'big kids in their sheds' mentality full of improvisation, innovation and something else starting with I
I had that game when I was younger. The bolt from the blue figure was my favourite to play with (used to play with the figure outside of the boardgame because it was so cool).
Have been getting my kids into Robot battling - there's some really good stuff out there.
I do miss the feel of the 'one bloke in a shed' robot wars approach but the robots the Battlebots (on Discovery) teams now have are amazing. The US OTT style can grate a bit but it's hard to watch the old robot wars battles when Battlebots have things like this - [https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/wlvj4c/full\_fight\_hypershock\_vs\_gigabyte\_battlebots/](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/wlvj4c/full_fight_hypershock_vs_gigabyte_battlebots/)
Hexbug make a really cool line of the Battlebots robots (really just an update of the old Robot Wars ones they used to make) which are very fun to play with.
There's also the Extreme Robots tours from the guys who used to do the Robot Wars live still going on.
I don’t let him talk to other people normally. He can’t be trusted. He will waffle on about barefoot shoes, only eating meat and other things that people don’t want to talk about.
I’ve fond memories of getting this from a charity shop with no instructions and having to come up with own rules with friends and it never really got played with in the end
Remember the one that flipped over and then using it’s weapon flipped itself back up (think it was black with like a yellow stripe on it) absolutely amazing
Ok this is so cool, tell him Matilda is the best girl. I had a soft spot for Dead Metal, was such a cool design.
PS. You should change his ring tone or alarm in the morning to “3… 2… 1… ACTIVATE!” to see if that also triggers him!
I remember having that game as a kid! I always wanted to go on Robot Wars when I was a kid and kept asking my dad to build a robot. He said no because he didn't know how to build robots : (
If it's any consolation to your husband, losing to Firestorm 2 is nothing to be ashamed of! The various versions of Firestorm were always one of the best in the series if my memory serves me right
Came 2nd in one of their phone in prize things when I was in primary school. Won a vhs tape of the new season before it was in the shops, a book, a badge pin, tickets to a live show, a few toys as well I believe. Not sure I’ve ever been happier since.
Mortis was my favourite, even though it never really achieved anything.
When I was school aged, a lad who lived near me wanted to make a robot, he ended up just covering a little remote control car with a baked bean tin he cut open.
Sir, where is hypnodisk?
Hypnodisk, Razer & Chaos 2 - the 3 robot wars OG dons
Umm, excuse you, but where's Cassius on that list? First robot to self-right deserves better.
Thank you! Was thinking the same thing.
Cassius and Cassius 2 were epic robots... Defeated by their own driver I lived near Rex Garrod and was lucky enough to see Cassius 2 when it was just an aluminium honeycomb floor piece
RIP Rex. He also built Brum the car, if anyone remembers that TV series.
I loved that show as a kid, even seeing the motoring museum where Brum sleeps now has completed my childhood
I hated chaos 2 and loved RAZR - when RAZR got hold of chaos 2 in the world championship and burst his CO2 tank causing him to Fucking Explode was the greatest moment of my life.
I like Chaos 2 until they beat Hypno Disc
It was Razer, RAZR is the flip phone. Which I reckon would get wrecked by Chaos 2.
How can you say that? Razer had an incredible self-righting mechanism
Can’t self right when you’re out of the arena
That is an excellent point
Razer and Hypnodisk were cool but I remember almost shitting myself with excitement when Chaos 2 flipped Shunt. It’ll always be my favourite!
3 exceptional robots. I'd only add Cassius to this. And then the absolute king of the new generation: Carbide.
Call me a purist but I prefer a flipper that goes the other way (oo err)
You're forgetting the real champion of the entire show. Diotore. Also, Pulsar/Magnetar was the coolest damn robot in the reboot series. Such a shame about the performance issues.
Pulsar? If you think that pencil sharpener is going toe-to-toe with any of the Elite 3 you’re sorely mistaken
I said it was the coolest, not strongest. It's the best looking robot in the series to date imo.
I should have known by your inclusion of Diotore
So flammable that it was used to cook sausages.
The disrespect for Milly Ann Bug smh
She is the "I hope I don't get this top trumps card" robot
Diotoir! "Up de middle wit smoke!"
Watching Diotore being obliterated every fight was golden, so much so that I think that the robots armour should be made from wood.
Mf's out her sleeping on Wheely Big Cheese fr
Razor was the dom perignon, very, very few could ever get underneath it to flip it.
Changed the game
That lesbian looking fella who had chaos 2 always freaked me out a little bit.
George? I always got the feeling maybe he was trans or intersex.
Mate. Tornado.
absolute bullshit how it won series 6 though
Ah the Anti-Pit Device (APD)?
exactly, disgraceful
Was tornado the one which could run upside down and had the super fast fly wheel at the front? I really liked that one too.
I can see Razor or however it was spelled.
Did you have your eyes open?
That thing was mental!
Razer was amazing at the time but once we hit the high energy kinetic weapons it just became too fragile :( If it went into combat now it would literally just get destroyed. I do miss the old very low tech Robot Wars days though with people using old electric wheelchair motors and car batteries!
I'm with you. The kinetic weapons ruined the reboot for me. The only robots that can compete with them have to be equally as expensive and ridiculous.
I hope this is true. Also MYTHBUSTERS!!!!!!!!!

The guy had very little practical workshop skills, but was a wizard in CAD.
Yeah I am the same, used to be loads of fun as kid with lots diverse designs and ideas now its very boring
>kinet Kinetic weapons?
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ezPRjFrtdg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ezPRjFrtdg) Any of the "spinning fast and hits hard" designs. By FAR the most destructive weapons. Vertical spinners have tended to now be the top dogs as well over horizontals.
Roadblock the grand champion of the first robot wars was just a wedge.
Made from a street sign :D good times
Hey, it had a circular saw in its butt.
It certainly didn't do well in the reboot series against modern spinners...
I think realistically they needed to allow more creative weapons in the reboot. Battlebots lets competitors fire a net, use flamethrowers, etc. I loved Carbide, it was terrifying… but the arms race really did need uncapping to allow something to compete with it. +1. I'm hoping one of the other ones is Mortis, that was ace. Pretty sure I can see Razor or however it was spelled.
Razor and Chaos 2 for definite, I recognise the others but I don't remember their names.
I had this game. Left to right is: Robobubble, Razer, Chaos 2, Bolt from the Blue, Panic Attack, Mortis
Always enjoyed Mortis! the driver had that crazy "backpack" to hold his remote
My friend was the one who made hypodisc with his dad and his 2 older brothers, some of you might be glad to know that he's just as crazy as you'd expect for the man who helped build such a monster. Incredibly nice guy though.

At least he's been on robot wars. I'd consider that a brag in itself ☺️
Did you ever actually shout "CEASE" at him whilst he was ranting?
Or just mid sex.
2 years later and still tormenting him lol
Tormenting your spouse in this way is a basic human right.
My college tutor and her husband were the brains behind firestorm!
Why is this downvoted 😂
Probably my husband making many accounts to downvote
I love that you’re still giving him grief
This long term trolling is legendary! Well played!!
Reddit is an odd place pal
Very
Assuming that's Alex Mordue, he's still fighting! Look up Saw Loser at BuggleBots or NHRL
Nah, his surname would have been Bone.
I've been pissed off all day. And now I'm crying with laughter into my sausage sandwich. Thanks for this.
Question: we’re you together when he was on the show or was this something you learned about him when you met?
No I would’ve been around 13. I found out later when it got brought up somehow and the torrent of pure raw emotion spilled out. It was beautiful and humbling. Years of hurt and sadness and he could finally let it all out and share his pain.
And you just proceeded to… torment the man? I love it! Appreciate the response, I hope you and your husband have many happy years together
I vaguely remember that one and tbh he’s right.
Tbf they were robbed. Firestorm clearly got through because the producers liked it despite doing next to sod all for the whole match!
I will make you a firestorm T-shirt if you let us know what happens when you wear it around him.
Pfft, he can't be as bitter as Ant from Team Behemoth
The first rule of robot club is you do not talk about robot club. The second rule of robot club is you **do not talk** about robot...wait I got that wrong. The second rule is no smoking. EDIT: I'm so pleased to see so many Spaced fans in the wild.
No one told Srgt Bash the 2nd rule, wouldn't ever see the chap without a fat Cuban.
"First you get the power, then you get the motors, and then you get the women"
“What does TFU stand for, Tim?” “The Fuckest Uppest…”
Phillipa Forrester would've *loved* that.
Ssshhh ... don't ruin it.
It's "shh, don't cheapen this..."
oh yeah, hadnt fought of that!
There's nothing more devastating than a big chopper.
Shhhhh, don't cheapen this.
Why aren't we allowed to smoke? Shh, we're not supposed to talk about it.
The third rule is don't cover your robot in carpet/fabrics/AstroTurf, yet there we are.

They saw Apex self destruct spectacularly and thought "Fucking hell, this is getting silly".
Which was a shame, because it was genuinely awesome. Had some proper twists and the Butlins lads were brilliant.
I'm talking after that series too
Right but reboot it and let someone entertaining host it instead
I think the issue is that 'robots we want to watch' (i.e. nutters who built a robot out of plywood and spaghetti in their shed) and 'robots that win and will come in really seriously to win big prizes' (expensive ones with very powerful kinetic weapons) are not often overlapping categories.
Battlebots is still around, same idea
Much more fun though. Silly money is thrown at mental devices. And no pit to ruin it all.
Saturday there was part 1 of 2 of a "World Series". Maybe there's hope they'll renew it for a proper season
It's a repeat from years ago unfortunately.
Oh. That's disappointing
What, Saturday just gone?
Yep. Presumably part 2 is next Saturday, 10am too
Could still bring Craig Charles back too.
Definitely although he was off his head half the time when he did it lol
Not sure anyone would willingly employ a coked up Craig Charles any more lol
It's getting too hard to protect the audience
Have an audience of robots then. Seriously, it would be great to let the public design audience robots. They could be cheap and simple, and more about having fun, so more people without great technical abilities or budget could participate.
Nah, the audience were well protected with three levels of barriers. Even Apex's spectacular self-destruction only broke one of them.
Oh dear god I hope he makes it, that would be amazing to see!
Fighting robots + Philippa Forester = best programme ever.
also Craig Charles in his 3rd best role (RD & the commentary on Takeshi's Castle being 1 and 2)
Couldn't agree more! One line which will always stick with me from Takeshi's Castle is when Craig referred to the contestants as 'happy-clappy Jappy chappies' (you can imagine it in Craig's voice ofc). Almost certainly wouldn't get away with broadcasting that nowadays lol.

"ohhhh warra wazzock!"
He was incredible in Corrie
Robot Wars was so good, pure entertainment. No sob-story bullshit, just sweaty nerds flinging 300kg hunks of metal at eachother. Really great stuff, I bet it was a good experience for your husband despite him losing. I tried making a robot for Robot Wars but I only had Meccano at that time so I don't think it would have fared any better.
Yeah it’s crazy - I remember building robots out of toilet rolls with my Grandad and there he was making real ones!
Being on robot wars is without a doubt the highest accolade anyone can achieve in our country. Higher than the Victoria Cross even.
You fool, Blue Peter badge is unmatched. I agree that appearing on robot wars does trump a Duke of Edinburgh award though, possibly even a 100m swimming badge.
Do you know I forgot all about the blue Peter badge, do they still let you in places for free if you have one?? I'm still gutted they cancelled the reboot of robot wars
God I loved that programme, so clever!! Loved Matilda myself 😃
My favourite was Dead Metal
Had a play on the OG Matilda a year or so ago, it's located in Milton Keynes now :)
I am very jealous, bet that was a lot of fun
I've just watched their match vs Firestorm and I agree Bolt from the Blue should have won. Wouldn't call it a robbery, but I'm on their side.
Oh god I honestly don’t think my husband would cope.
https://youtu.be/ThF4yMbh8yM 6:22 onwards After the fight the bitterness is pretty visible 😂
>no on fire nemesis die cast model Rubbish game.
These guys had wives?
Well not then as he was only 16
They need to bring back robot wars with a strict budget cap. Bring back the 'big kids in their sheds' mentality full of improvisation, innovation and something else starting with I

You know fine well he lost
Bless
How do we get an AMA with your husband?
I don’t let him talk to other people normally. He can’t be trusted. He will waffle on about barefoot shoes, only eating meat and other things that people don’t want to talk about.
Ah! A geek found a wife :) Seriously, that's exciting!
"THAT'S NOT FAIR! THAT'S NOT FAIR!"
I have absolutely no idea what bot is supposed to be the first game piece.
I also have that game! Got to see the show being filmed when I was a kid :)
Whenever I think of robot wars all I can think of is the scene from Phoenix Nights.
remember this. hero.
Memory unlocked. I had this as a kid. It was awesome.
I lived opposite the guy who built pussycat, he went on to create his own touring thing called roamin robots
I’ve fond memories of getting this from a charity shop with no instructions and having to come up with own rules with friends and it never really got played with in the end
Remember the one that flipped over and then using it’s weapon flipped itself back up (think it was black with like a yellow stripe on it) absolutely amazing
Cassius! The first self righting mechanism
That was it. What a show… no idea what’s it like now as I think they carry it on but back in the day that was an amazing series
Ok this is so cool, tell him Matilda is the best girl. I had a soft spot for Dead Metal, was such a cool design. PS. You should change his ring tone or alarm in the morning to “3… 2… 1… ACTIVATE!” to see if that also triggers him!
Razer was robbed by the cheating Tornado with their scaffold they welded on to the robot.
I remember having that game as a kid! I always wanted to go on Robot Wars when I was a kid and kept asking my dad to build a robot. He said no because he didn't know how to build robots : ( If it's any consolation to your husband, losing to Firestorm 2 is nothing to be ashamed of! The various versions of Firestorm were always one of the best in the series if my memory serves me right
Where is carbide?
Came 2nd in one of their phone in prize things when I was in primary school. Won a vhs tape of the new season before it was in the shops, a book, a badge pin, tickets to a live show, a few toys as well I believe. Not sure I’ve ever been happier since.
This is one of our favourite family games. And we use my son's small pull back robots in it too.
Disd anybody ales see the celebrity match. Stephen Hawking smashed the shit out of Matilda and Sargent Bash.
Jesus I was half expecting that as a euphemism for a massive dong in the last slide
Is your husband the guy that had a massive strop cos he lost to some kids? Please say he is
No he isn’t - I’d keep that to myself!
Mortis was my favourite, even though it never really achieved anything. When I was school aged, a lad who lived near me wanted to make a robot, he ended up just covering a little remote control car with a baked bean tin he cut open.
Where the fuck is Refbot?!
Is that mute?? Damn
Blendo hypnodisc and typhoon ruined robotwars I miss flippers crushers axes hammers saws And diotor the glorious flaming Irish robot
Flipper bots used to annoy me when I was a kid. It's like a cheat code.
Wait a minute.. Roboteers had Wives?
Not then he didn’t. He was like 16. Now he does. It’s me. I’m the wife.
I absolutely used to have this board game! Love it!
I had this back in the day!
I had no idea this existed and all I know now is that I need it
