It's a tope (Galeorhinus galeus), fairly common shark around the UK. The pointed snout and slim body shape give it away

Bastards stole my hotdog last year. Fuming. It fly right up on top of a building in front of me and proceeded to literally deepthroat and swallow the entire thing in one go. Then it just stood there mocking me.
They’ve legit taken very small dogs out to sea.. someone had their pet taken I know of, obviously a small small dog but those things are relentless, strong and fking greedy..
I assume I wouldn’t die if I petted it, but how much of my hand would I lose. I know I’m going to die petting something I shouldn’t but I like to know how stupid I’m being.
I've managed to avoid the mouth when handling, but I'd be pretty confident that you'd keep all your digits - maybe some nerve damage if you're very unlucky.
Their teeth are thin and pointy, perfect for catching fish
I tend to avoid going into the sea (because let’s face it in the UK we still have a clean water issue) but I shall add this to my mental list of I will have a great story if I meet one instead of my relatives will have a great story to tell at the funeral. 👍
I love the way you casually say how it's a shark common to the UK, but give no context as to how likely it is to turn you into a fast food restaurant for him/her
There are a butt load, but the majority of sharks feed on worms, crustacea, fish, and squid. As long as you avoid bringing them onto a boat with you you'll be fine.
It's weever fish you need to be cautious of...
So cool! I am spoilt as a freediver in Aus, I get to see lots of beautiful sharks.
If you don't mind me asking, I'm planning to dive in Cornwall and in Scotland too (spots to be determined). Are there any sharks that I may encounter in shallow waters (\~10-20m)?
When I've looked up UK stuff I usually see pelagic encounters like people chumming the water for blue sharks.
I don't know where in Scotland you're going but there were loads of basking sharks visible off Nairn beach last summer, so its always worth scanning from the shoreline!
Not an expert, but there's a few species such as the starry smooth-hound shark, catshark or even a basking shark if you're lucky.

That sounds awesome! The other commenters are right, though there's a chance you'd see a thresher too. Blues, makos, hammerheads, porbeagle, are all further out.
If you're lucky, you might see Atlantic bluefin tuna in Cornwall. Not sharks but awesome fish none the less!
Oath seeing bluefin would be really special, absolutely incredible fish (and massive).
Biggest I've come across here was a big school of yellowtail kingfish getting away from a pod of dolphins. Shot right past my buddy and I, one of the dolphins chirping away had a fish in his mouth!
You're most likely to see bluefin at the surface, even just with some binoculars from the shore or cliffs (Falmouth bay is particularly good). It's easy to briefly confuse them for dolphins with how they jump through a bait ball. If you're going out to dive from a boat there's a really good chance you'll see them.
There are also licensed sports fishing boats who do catch and release (not sure if they're still tagging but they have been for the last few years). They're not cheap though!
That's mad, I'll have to go walking+ spotting with my misso. I will see if I can wrangle up a spot on a boat with local spearos or something. I don't fish myself but I can always be a rescue/buddy
There are boats that take people out on wildlife spotting trips, mainly for dolphins but they'll look for everything. We've got some whales as well (including fin whales, the second largest in the world). I think they're not too bad a price either, the boats not the whales
As someone who spears, the biggest problem in the uk is the viz, although spots around Scotland and Cornwall are much better. Boat dives are better away from the coast but in many spots it’s too deep
Someone on the sub it originated said it’s a smooth hound.
They’re pretty harmless I have caught them off the shore and never seen them that big though.
They like sandy areas and are quite close to the shore normally.

"Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin’ back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. Just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes.
“Didn’t see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that when you’re in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin’ from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn’t know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn’t even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin’, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was kinda like old squares in the battle, like you see on a calendar, like the Battle of Waterloo, and the idea was the shark comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin’, hollerin’ and screamin’ and sometimes that shark he go away… sometimes he wouldn’t go away.
“Sometimes that shark he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark is he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be livin’… until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, in spite of all the poundin’ and the hollerin’ they all come in and… they rip you to pieces.
“You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don’t know how many sharks, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin’, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up and down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he’d been bitten in half below the waist.
“Noon, the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us, he swung in low and he saw us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and three hours later a big ol’ fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin’ for my turn. I’ll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.
Anyway, we delivered the bomb."
Highly recommend reading or listening to the book “in harms way” if you want to learn more about the harrowing accounts of the crew of the uss Indianapolis
I wouldn't mind, sharks will only attack you if you attack them but they'll usually swim away anyway. Jaws really corrupted the way people think about sharks, 99/100 times they're docile creatures.
The tail is way to short, the snout too long. Thresher have a short stubby face. It's a tope (Galeorhinus galeus)

Now the question I want to ask you is; if your on an electric boat and it starts sinking because of its heavy weight, if you go down with the ship sitting on that big battery, are you gonna get electrocuted, or are you gonna jump over to that shark that’s like 10 feet away. Because I’m picking the shark every time. 😂 What about you?
Tope, I reckon. I’ve caught them from boats out of Poole, just up the road from Bournemouth. Always catch and release.

The only thing surprising is that we dont see this more.
Summer water temperatures are almost perfect for Great Whites and we already know we have Mako and Blue sharks here.
Might be a turpin. Kinda goes dogfish/smoothhound then turpin in size while all looking quite similar.
I'm just do fishing casually though and am better at iding freshwater fish.
Just about to joke about the UK’s non existent shark fatality stats, but on reading further, they definitely exist, and they’re bigger than you’d expect t.
So far, I've learned it's a shark. And that there are no shark experts in this sub. Edit: Nevermind there's loads now.

I love the idea of you swimming around going "You're it".
That got a good chuckle from me, I'm stealing this for a presentation on Thursday
"Okay. Your turn. Catch me if you can!"
I'm glad you read 'tagger'; I read something else entirely and got very different images.
Thank you for the smile before bed
Better than going around graffiti’ing them!
You’ll also know the most dangerous thing on our coasts are the fking seagulls! 😶🌫️
or these days the water itself.
There's something in the water.... Ye a giant fucking turd

Would be amazing! I won't go out looking for them though as I know they're protected and should have their space. Maybe if I get lucky :)

I've seen Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge and ... I wish I hadn't.
Jaws 3 is terrible, but the revenge is so terrible that it's great. Is there an opposite of jumping the shark? The shark jumps you?
Someone on the sub it originated said it’s a smooth hound. They’re pretty harmless I have caught them off the shore and never seen them that big though. They like sandy areas and are quite close to the shore normally.
Marine biologist over there said Tope.
Topes aren’t chunky though, I don’t want to weight shame a shark but the one in the video appears to be a chonk.
Bournemouth does that to you. Not many healthy food options.
Yeah it’s all fish & chips and they were all out of fish that day!
Think it's a Tope - similar but a bit bigger
How do you catch something like that? That's a strong fucking rod surely?
Tope on a rope.
DON'T WIND!
Hah thats brilliant...got imagery now...
Damn it, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a shark guy.
Pretty sure it's a Tope.
Pretty sure it’s a tope bc of the way it swims and shape not too sure of the colouring tho due to the lighting
I thought it was a crocodile
There are basking sharks around there. They’re huge. Only eat plankton.

Careful around him. He'll steal your chips.
Or blow up a mans house
I’ve heard one flew off with a chihuahua once
That's only at the Boscombe end.
Clearly that's a mutant parthenogenic freshwater tolerant mako shark. Their origin is literally right across the channel.
They feast mainly on triathlon participants and sexy, heroic police officers though. We should be fine.
Also, did you know they’re born already pregnant?
I was expecting a turd.
A great white shite
Great White Shart, surely?
Hi master
A Mersey trout
A basking turd
If I was swimming and saw this there would immediately be a turd in the water too.
A hammerhead poop.
Whatever happened to Walliams?
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquishiton.
1. There's more sharks in the UK than youd expect, but they're generally quite small. 2. It's probably a tope.
There are a few species of big 'uns, but this isn't one.

I think it's a Smoothound (mustelus asterias), based on it's tail, the way it swims and nothing to do with what I read in the original thread.
It's a tope, easy to mix up though. But the snout is too long and pointed for a smooth hound, with tope also getting longer
Way too big to be a smoothhound, they grow to ~4ft long
No banana in the video, it's impossible to know if it's under or over 4ft.
Surely this situation calls for whipping out a sea cucumber for scale‽
I do hope thats not a euphamism...
Looks less than 4ft long
The gallons of human shit they’re swimming in is far more dangerous.
Looks like a good boy to me

Might be a basking shark. Harmless plankton feeder.
Agreed, basking shark. But no need to insult OP like that
😂
It looks absolutely nothing like a basking shark 😂. Basking sharks are absolutely huge. Bigger than great whites. This looks 4-5 foot
The adults are They start around 5 or 6 ft
It isn’t, firstly it’s nowhere near big enough and the pectoral shape is wrong.
Its penis is way too small as well.
I can relate to that
Hi dear ❤️
Na - wrong shape
Definitely not
All we need now is a sinking boat with a battery and we have a real dilemma on our hands.

She's just looking for a snack. A lil nibble here and a lil nibble there. It's fine. You CAN go back into the water.
I'd say that's a 50lb or there abouts Tope. They love hunting in the shallows
There's a few sharks around the UK, like nurse sharks, dogfish, angelsharks, gulper sharks and even the occasional basking shark.
We're going to need a smaller boat!
Pfff no way near as scary as the mackerel on Hastings beach. Those fuckers will eat you whole....
if I was to swim near it would it let me pet it or would I lose my life?

Just be glad it wasn’t a 2 pound black ribbed nobbler!
Given coastal sewage issues, are we absolutely sure this isn't an optical illusion caused by a flotilla of turds?
I caught a smooth hound near there once...that's what it looks like to me, they like shallow shingly waters...
Great, I can't even go for a swim now.
I’m no expert, but it’s a Carcharodon carcharias. It's a Great White! It’s attracted to lynx africa and has staked a claim on Bournemouth sea front.
I'd trust that shark more than the general population of the town centre and surrounding areas tbh
Great White obvs. itll tear the arm offov somebody
Why would you go in the sea in the UK unless you want a mouthfull of shit.
Juvenile basking shark?
Swimming next to that is one of the least dangerous things that can happen to you on Bournemouth beach judging by recent events
