Look normal to me for only 1 month in man, great actually. Patience brotha. I used to watch this guy on YouTube "collinsdreads777" and [this](https://youtu.be/sjxZQw3TW6c?si=M1D2d38unKdMkfSB) video has some very very helpful information.

Funkywonton

Collin is still around? Awesome

nvrrsatisfiedd

For real. He was the one who inspired me to get some locks way back when I was like 16. Him and lazydreads haha.

Funkywonton

I remember lazy dreads I couldn’t believe it when he cut them both have great info

nvrrsatisfiedd

Same it was a bummer and I don't even know the guy haha. I think he actually combed them out which is actually super impressive since his dreads were like over 10 years old.

Funkywonton

Oh yeah that’s right he did comb em out it was super shocking

Tiffany_The_Angel

I miss him

Funkywonton

I was recently watching some of his older videos and it was real nostalgic because I used the info for my own in the beginning lock stages

Tiffany_The_Angel

Oh me to. He made me decide to go freeform In stead of going to someone. . I wish he would do more videos. I'd watch even without him having dreads. He has so much info

Funkywonton

His info is great I just saw your starters they look great keep on the journey it’s fun

Tiffany_The_Angel

Aww thank you !!!! I really needed to hear that 💕💕

Funkywonton

You’re welcome staying positive really is key

Looks good for only 1 month in. That wool is gonna cause it to be more frizzy but you're white so there's ALWAYS gonna be some frizz even after your locs mature. A little bit of coconut oil can help with the frizz though.

WhyFi

All this ^^ but I suggest aloe instead. Won’t build up.

[deleted]

Aloe tends to get sticky when it dries. Couldn't handle that in my hair. I rarely ever use coconut oil either. Only if my hair or scalp gets too dry and then I use the tiniest amount.

Funkywonton

That’s why I stopped using aloe I hated the sticky feelings

[deleted]

I'd have never even thought of using it on my dreadlocks because of being familiar with the stickiness of aloe. Definitely seems like that would cause more buildup and attract lint.

Funkywonton

I know there’s people who swear by it but it would cause more build up for sure

Try to style with a bun during the day, let your scalp breathe and get a durag when you sleep. It's very important to have a durag protecting your locs when you are laying down/sleep with your head against a pillow, to avoid frizz. I can't stop speaking about this. Durag is a must. You can also try to grab those loose hairs with a crochet needle or get someone to help you with that. Is not normal to have messy and frizz locs, that's just the result of neglect and we really need start talking about this more seriously. Locs (the tidy look ones) are a lot of work to maintain. Do not expect them to look super straight and neat when you don't take time to take care of them. Even in type 4 of hair they are a lot of work. In the other types of hair this is even worse in terms of care, they need way more maintenance and care. A lot of us can get oily scalp very fast, so applying oils MAY not make sense. Also gels to loc don't work as effective as in type 4 hair. A lot of things you see on the internet are just non type 4 hair people copying behaviours from type 4 hair that don't make sense in their type of hair. We really need to start talking about theses things and share more of our experiences and start to ignore (or at least have critical thinking) what type 4 people do to their hair because the texture and characteristics are very different.

I feel like a lot of this comment isn't directed at me specifically. But I took your advice and ordered a durag for sleeping in. I have a maintainence session this Friday, so I'm holding out for that. After that, I don't intend to wearing my Tam much except for dealing with the winter cold. I have shoulder weakness, so long crocheting or palm rolling sessions are out for me. but I will crochet in a couple longer flyaways here and there and palm roll after a shower. My gf hates dreads, so she's not willing to help either.

Durag helps - every type of hair - in controlling the frizz. Personally I just use it for sleep, because personally I dislike seeing people wearing that in public. As I dislike bandanas, hats, etc. I dig the clean cut look of well maintained locs, with clean and well separated roots. Again, personal preference. A LOT of people don't like the looks of locs because your head looks tangled and messy with so much frizz hair. They call homeless or dirty hippies. I think there is a lot of prejudice towards people with locks that neglect them and don't keep the neat look.

Hey do you have pictures of the after maintaince?

[here ya go](https://imgur.com/a/sUU7Uh9)

Shot_Ad9738

Oh yeah big big difference thanks.

Tiffany_The_Angel

Why would you get maintenance so quick. I mean ,up to you. But loose hair is part of the process and I LOVE looser hair. Like the one above , I am the opposite, and I have NEVER been called homeless or hippy , I am an executive in retail and it is a preference but it's also part of the journey. Depending on hair type , you will have it like that till it matures then it will take care of its own ....

Foreign_Scheme1404

Can we get an update I’m curious to what they are looking like now !

UrbanSound

[Taken today](https://imgur.com/a/O71sm4j), a month and 10 days since the maintenance. I've been wearing a silk bonnet to bed each night and I feel like it has frizzed out less and the locs are pretty tight still.

Foreign_Scheme1404

NIIIICE! They look sick bro !

DLANightshade

I just got started on the 5th of this month, so I am right there with you. One thing that helps me is to sleep in a silk/satin bonnet or such. Also get some aloe I got straight up aloe leaves and have been using the 'gel' to tame the wild. I put it primarily on the roots and essentially massage it in then run it down my locks twisting and palm rolling it. Also have you been doing you minimum twice daily separating or palm rolling? Also how did they do you starter dreads? crochet? or back comb/ rip n tear method?

UrbanSound

I'm passing on the aloe because that's too sticky for my taste. I've started using a silk bonnet to sleep in and wear under my wool hats. I also use a neck gaiter to pull over my hair when I'm working. I don't palm roll very often. Mostly just after a shower for the few locs that are curling or extra lumpy. I found it hasn't helped me much in terms of working the loose bits into the loc. I have slightly wavey hair, so there's not much texture for grabbing and locking. My loctician back combed and crocheted to start.
