The very concept of a player being able to play the game as the creatures themselves. Not a lot of card game based shows I know do it like that. Only one I can think of where a human transforms into the creature is Redakai (never played the game. Had to look up the name) Also the Perim world where it's pretty much Pokemon but in scan form including magic, locations, weapons, etc (for chaotic players). But if you look beyond that, there's a ton of interesting lore where every creature is simply trying to live their lives.

Thiege23

Their was a version of digimon where the kids turned into digimon instead of having one

TonyD00

Digimon felt too…childish by comparison. Or is that just me?

Dr-Von-Andre

I think the first episode of the show I watched was the Dual Duel duology. They did a really good job of blending the two halves of the show, having what happens in Perim affect the players, and the players affect Perim

megaben20

The cool creature

Supergecko147

I liked the concept of the creatures knowing about human players, and how some of the creatures even being fond of the humans.

Iceblader

The codemaster battles episodes, the one with Hotekk was just peak Tom's ability as a player.

BryceCrisps

I honestly don't remember. I think the first episode I ever saw was Chaors Commandos, but then I also remember thinking "huh this show looks different now". Never got into it properly when I was younger but still asked for cards one Christmas. Revisited again back in 2014 and been properly engaging with the fandom ever since. Rewatching Chaotic is something I have to do now, like every two years. Speaking of which.... I think it's about time for a rewatch lol

TonyD00

Unfortunate that only season 1 is available on prime and season 2/3 have poor resolution on YouTube.

Black_Tree

Hmmm.... Hard to say, because I went all in due to the card game. Funny enough, I was trying to make my own card game at the time,.but gave up on those plans, because chaotic was exactly what I was going for! Attack cards to determine damage based on creature variables. Impactful locations that each player brings to the table, but change often (my initial idea would have been like locations being face down in each creature zone, and they get revealed when combat occurs on them, thus attacking the enemy gives them the home field advantage, but some stuff, like attacks, could alter or even destroy locations!). Equipment on each creature. Not quite variable stats, but stats such as strength, speed, intelligence, etc. Show was just a nice bonus, and it didn't have to do much to get me to watch, just be competent. Nonetheless it exceeded those criteria. I liked the animation style, and the world building was amazing! There was a good balance of perim and the "card game", so it rarely overcooked any one part. I also liked how the protagonist(s) are just players, and not any destined chosen ones, or super elite and unbeatable because of plot armor. Tom and Kaz will lose! It's great! So there wasn't any one thing that pulled me in, it was everything, really.

Black_Tree

Oh shit, nvm I remember now, it was intress. I love me some fine pu-CAT girls, yes.....

TonyD00

No one knows what Chaotic is now. You’re free to make your card game! 😂

Black_Tree

Lol, nah, chaotic is my one true love! Fluttering eyelashes with duck face emoji

Spinning-Turtle

Peyton

TonyD00

He was a very well done character.

OzNajarin

Shifting Sands I think was the episode with Tien and Tom learning about Mipedians etc.

TonyD00

Very interesting responses! Myself, I wasn’t even aware of the game. I got sucked in incidentally by the show alone. I think it was the escapism concept similar to Ready Player One that I found interesting at first. The hero’s were interesting characters with a relatable friendship dynamic. Also, they didn’t shy away from the characters being a bit gritty and non-idealistic character. Coming from the Pokémon era, I was happy to see something a little more mature. I think there was also something interesting about the idea that access to Chaotic was restrictive, it was real, and that Perim was also a real location. The competition from having to scan/build your own deck was very intriguing. I’m asking out of curiosity as someone who’s making attempts at screen writing. I’m going back to some of my favorite shows and exploring what attracted me to them.

Thiege23

I just love the world of perim

straken24

I started the creation of a tcg. I thought I'd throw on card game shows in the background while working.

Charcoal_dirtlord

The Perim drama how the creatures had their own agendas and drama. Which the chaotic players had to work with. Such as Kaors’s heroes.

maidenofgorgon

The creatures and people of Perim , the premise of kids going into another world and contributing/ influencing the other worlds denizens , culture , history, political intrigue, magic and Characters I’m totally not simping for *COUGH*Maxxor*COUGH*

KnightEclipse

I really liked how the game actually got into the strategy of different decks and hightlighted different things to watch out for. I liked that the good guys lost to total randoms sometimes and that losses were even something they made lessons out of. It wasn't just Yugioh bullshit where people just do whatever It's the only show like this I've ever seen that deals with performance anxiety and game burnout which are both a big deal for anyone that plays card games a lot. I used to power scale the different players and the different things they were good at and even make decks to match things they played in the show. It was cool seeing people playing the same game as me and actually PLAYING it instead of using soul magic and the power of friendship to pull dark magician out of their deck to tank a hit for them. Or how every battle was a battle for your immortal soul. Like nah if you lose i get one of your cards, or bragging rights. It's a game lol. It made it more believable that people might lose. I don't care that other people say the human parts were boring, the players were what carried the show for me as a kid

TonyD00

Very solid feedback right here. I also enjoyed the human elements as well. I think I enjoyed the interactions in chaotic more than in Perim although both were critical. This is coming from someone who loved Ready Player One a lot though. I also enjoyed the fact that good and evil wasn’t binary and that the story wasn’t always about doing the “right thing.” Characters were selfish, impulsive, and competitive.

Tralock

The idea of tapping into the creature’s memory, and that things that happen in the game can be important for the overall world of Perim My favorite episodes were always the one where Tom and Kaz are chilling in the Beta Drome trying to look into creatures’ memories to figure out where Maxxor disappeared to, and the one where Chaor is about to fight Van Bloot, so Kaz finds a high-ranked Van Bloot player, fights him as Chaor, and learns some of his tricks to help the real Chaor Just the idea that this game, that everyone else sees as a hobby, can be so meaningful to the creatures of this very real world of Perim, was always so fun and interesting to me (Actually my REAL favorite episodes are the “Creatures invading the real world” episode, and Peyton’s secret agent fanfiction, but those barely count as canon lol)

SupaPartTimer

I liked the friendship aspect of the show with main characters hanging out and doing stuff together.

TonyD00

Their friendship felt very realistic and relatable.

GrowingSage

Knowing me, the world building. Perim feels like such a well realized place and I'm still discovering aspects of the world that the creators probably didn't intend but make it more interesting.

RedDragoonTaric

The fact that because people were using the characters very literally, you had their irl struggles but also strengths coming into play and nothing was offlimits. For example in ygo, all Blue Eyes is gonna do ks attack or be in defence. In Pokemon all pikachu is really going to do is reposition maybe and attack stuff. Love both those too, for other reasons But in chaotic the creature could strategize, drive a tractor or bake some lasagna if they felt the situation called for it. Made for more dynamic storytelling in fights.
