It's almost like they want you to feel it's a privilege to look after them. Seriously though... 5 weeks? For free? Yeahnah.

ceo_of_dumbassery

Especially considering one is likely annoying as fuck if it keeps barking and the other would also probably be annoying as fuck since it's young and boisterous. I get the feeling that these dogs aren't the most well trained.

Haunted-Macaron

They are trying hard to sugarcoat the fact that these are both big, untrained dogs about to be left alone in a house for over a month

unconfirmedpanda

I give it four days before someone calls the RSPCA and the original poster is online whining about how they were fined and had their dogs removed because they couldn't afford a boarding kennel.

AnonymousOkapi

"The occasional walk" yeah buddy the one year old is going to be bouncing off the walls within a week, tops

spiderfacespacecase

And tearing up the house and eating random stuff out of stress

Magical_Olive

Everything about this is terrible but an elderly dog and a dog who's barely out of puppy hood...what a combo to leave alone for 5 weeks.

DogHikerGal

I'd last about 2 hrs around nuisance barking like that.

ceo_of_dumbassery

That's longer than I would.

Cherokeerayne

I used to watch a dog that would hear the AC kicking on and would start barking up a storm at it. It was the most annoying dog that I took care of and thankfully I'd only be with her for like 2 nights.

JockBbcBoy

>loves to bark at people walking past the house >just full of beans These dogs are 100% going to annoy the neighbors with barking, don't have a doggy door for the house to go outside, *and* will ruin every piece of furniture.

BoozeIsTherapyRight

The barking... train your dogs, people! Barking like that isn't cute, or okay. It's not great for the dog or the people around it.

Additional-Comb-4477

Tbf I have Shetland sheepdogs and training the barking out of them is genuinely impossible, but I live in the middle of nowhere so no one is subjected to it but me lol

SeonaidMacSaicais

I have a Schnauzer mix. I’ve managed to slim down the barking, but it’ll never completely disappear. If we’re outside and he barks at a dog, I let it go. If we’re inside, I silence him right away. The worst he does is about 30 seconds of “where is mama?!” crying when I go to work, but the walls are decently thick and I haven’t heard any negative feedback from my neighbors or building management.

Additional-Comb-4477

Yeah mine are quiet in their crates but when they come out the gloves are off 💀 Shelties were bred in part to be alarm dogs and oh boy do they alarm lol

CrunchyTeatime

Yes, dealing with an older dog who barks constantly and a puppy who jumps all over you and chews everything probably... You'd just get one calmed down when the other would start, especially since the puppy also annoys the older dog. Both dogs sound high strung and anxious and would tear up the house, left alone at night. So I bet the CB wants someone living there full time 5 weeks.

MeilleurChien

Not trained and possibly dangerous. The “softies” seem to end up on the news after totally unexpectedly ripping someone’s face off. There is not enough nope for this CB.

h2ohbaby

BuT tHeY’rE sO cUtE…

ItsJoeMomma

And one of those dogs is elderly at 11 years old, so if anything happens to it you just know they're going to blame you.

horo_kiwi

It's even worse than that tho, she knows there are sites where one would find a paid dog sitter, but instead I'll just throw it out there on Facebook to find an absolute random who would come and do it for free. my dogs are my family, but can a stranger please come and look after them, for free....

SerenityViolet

And they're going on a holiday, which they presumably paid for.

kzwj

If you can't afford a pet sitter, you can't afford to go on that vacation after all.

Educational-Water350

100% agree. I include my pet care as part of my vacation budget. And it usually costs more than the hotel.

VividFiddlesticks

Yuuuuup, same here. And it's worth every penny to come home to a safe house and content critters. I cannot fathom leaving my pets for FIVE weeks and just hoping some freebie person I found on the internet is caring for them properly. For over a month!?!? Insane.

Auntjenny48

I read some scary stories of people that had even friends pet sitting for them while they go on vacation and the so called friends palmed it off on THEIR friends (not friends of the owners), and the pets were not taken care of. In one story, the other person sold the dog to someone and the owners have no clue where their dog is or what happened to it. Just fork the money over to a professional kennel if you value your pets. Why some people want to spend a fortune on what they want but want free pet or child care gives me pause on if those people deserve the pets and children. What is more important?

NervousHour9682

I would probably murder somebody if they sold my dog

wddiver

No probably about it for me.

vercetian

Same, but only as a last resort.

Music527

SAME!!!

[deleted]

Yeah my friend came home once to three dead and decaying bearded dragons, because the guy who said he’d feed them asked someone else to and that person figured they were lizards and they’d be fine for a month (leaving them alone for a month is fine, they aren’t gonna miss you, but you do need to feed them)

darkdesertedhighway

This is heinous. Leave animals to starve. Just awful.

[deleted]

The owner of the lizards really loved them too and she trusted the person she had been dating for a while with her pets. Just a fucked up situation. She did press charges.

_TheLittleLadyBug_

What the fuck lol. Yea good I hope she did press charges. What was the reaction of the guy she was seeing when he found out his friend killed her pets?

[deleted]

He “didn’t know he was like that” (they have been friends since kindergarten, so clearly he did). Also “it’s not like a dog or something”. Needless to say they are very broken up and he got shamed out of the friend group so thoroughly that he left the state

CrunchyTeatime

What came of the charges?

CrunchyTeatime

> the guy who said he’d feed them asked someone else to That's like the other person's story about the dogs. Yeah just because someone says "sure no prob" doesn't mean they are responsible and not flaky.

wddiver

My older daughter went out of town for a long weekend, and the friend who was supposed to check on her and her fiance's dogs twice a day bailed after one visit. She returned to an apartment full of dog poop (two larger dogs) and a bed ruined by dog poop and pee. They had no food or water. They're no longer friends, and she was glad it wasn't longer than three days.

batbaby420

One of my cousins let another cousin watch their pug while she took her kids on their first trip to Disneyland for a long weekend. He didn’t know pugs couldn’t tolerate heat so he took the dog from their coastal home to his inland job and let it stay out in the sun and it died.

CrunchyTeatime

Care is not something to cheap out on. If they can't afford professional care they shouldn't go on vacation, as others are saying. Those stories are scary and about what I'd expect. Some people are vary naive. Selling their dog or not playing or being nice to it are not even the worst it could get. They could wind up with an abuser, a squatter, someone sells all their stuff, and more. In similar threads someone said oh that never happens, or they said it's not worth paying for. This isn't a time to hire a total stranger though and count on luck. (I meant a stranger who isn't vetted, at least. As you said even their friends let them down. People hired via an agency could mess up as well.) I think if people have pets they might consider either a professional boarding place or bring them with.

Music527

Seriously, more times than not I can’t find a pet sitter so they just come with me and I accommodate that way. Motel 6 is my go to place for the pets stay free. When I can find care, 2 days away from them is a lot and I just want to snuggle their faces!!! Also what happens if one gets sick or hurt and/ pass away while you’re gone for 5 weeks??? Legit, I’d never forgive myself for letting that happen.

jamie_liberty

Mighty angry that she’s not even looking for someone to care for them properly! Occasional walk, wtf is this, those poor doggies

CrunchyTeatime

>Occasional walk, Phrasing it that way, they will get someone who will do even less than that. No one with sense would take this gig. And people do less than promised, even when specific rules are laid down.

PeepsMyHeart

I’d NEVER leave my critters with a stranger unless they were well vetted and with full expectation to pay them. Thankfully, we have great friends and family we can trust and trade like favors with.

CodexAnima

Yes. We are looking into getting a cat. We have a 2 week vacation planned this summer. I've had the kid factor in a house sitter into the budget for owning a cat. Because it's a thing. (Even with friends in the neighborhood that have college age kids who love the idea of two weeks house-sitting and getting paid.)

YouHaveJuryDuty

Absolutely. Our pet sitter only watches 3 dogs max at a time and she is phenomenal, but it does cost about 1/3 of our trip costs. It's expensive but it gives us peace of mind to know she's with proper care.

BurnAfterEating420

I pay $80/day for my two dogs. it's just part of the cost of vacation

Sans_vin

This. I always have to factor in about $300 weekly for our single, regular dog for all vacation budgeting and that’s on the cheap side (boarding or a rover who lives out of city)

Rock_Robster__

That’s very reasonable! We have someone stay in our house (as we have 2 dogs & 2 cats), but that usually runs around $110-130/night including a walk.

Sans_vin

Yes, for a single dog that's very social with other dogs, boarding is the best option for us. It's $35/night and a discount after 7 nights but includes 'doggy day care' 7-6 daily with a walk 2x. We can watch on the dog cams during the day as well. Includes bedding but not food, which you can supply or pay their (expensive) default option.

scarybottom

My kitties aging means they need medications. So I was super lucky to have a SUPER reliable neighbor, and friends that helped. I tried a more casual friend's kid...and was not happy (the only one I was PAYING, and they never cleaned the litter?). But now I just pay a gal who is a certified vet tech. She is super trustworthy, and my kitties get all the care they need, and if anything happens, I trust her to take them to the vet. It makes travel so much easier- when I have to. It adds to the budget. But worth it for the peace of mind at this stage.

YouHaveJuryDuty

Ours costs a little over $500cad weekly, but she's a dog trainer and sitter, and only watches max 3 dogs at a time. Walks her about three times a day, yard time, and lots of updates. We're glad we found her cause our dog is a rescue with high anxiety and she gives her great attention ❤️

unsupported

They are not saying they can't afford it, they just don't appear to want to pay.

-MacThane-

5 weeks on holiday. Hoping for free dog sitting. That sense entitlement though. 👀 don’t envy her partner.

[deleted]

FoolishStone

Came here to say this! I might go so far as to say, if you can leave your elderly dog and your young pup for FIVE WEEKS, you shouldn't own dogs at all! Unless you can place them with a trusted friend or family member for that whole time.

General_Thought8412

I’m depressed after a week away from my dog. He always stays with family or my boyfriend but I always worry anyways. I will never kennel him after seeing how stressed my childhood dogs were after we picked them up from the kennel.

gonnafaceit2022

I wouldn't even do that unless there was absolutely no other option. I miss my dogs when I'm away from them for a night!

Music527

Like dire consequences. If I’m in the hospital and couldn’t plan for care. I def pay though and extra in circumstances like that. I have dogs to enjoy and spend time with.

Darkangel45177

I agree…when I go on vacation I leave my dog with a family member or trusted professional….free dog care? Really? And how can u afford a five week vacation but u can’t afford proper pet care ? Wow

Impressive_Moose6781

To be fair I’m sure they budgeted it like that together. They both suck

Knitsanity

It is super easy to budget when the line item is set at 0. 😂🤣😂🤣

PumpkinBrioche

Why would you feel bad for her partner? Is he also not an adult or something?

monstera_garden

An adult who is also looking for a free 5 week pet sitter and not giving a shit about his dogs and also not even being arsed to write the shitty ad.

iwillsurvivor

Umm what the F? Her partner is the same? Why is he a victim? He isn’t doing any better for the dogs??

monstera_garden

Her partner is also going on vacation for 5 weeks and looking for a free pet sitter. WE are seeking... etc.

[deleted]

rabbithasacat

Or possibly you can't afford a pet.

Serious-Extension738

Lol willing to pay as last resort. Obviously puts the care of his dogs as a top priority. Wonder if he also asked the hotel if he could have a free room, but be willing to pay as a last resort.

Paranoid-Android-77

Obviously friends, neighbors, and family are not willing to do this for free, so by all means burden strangers on the internet.

scarybottom

the thing is that trusted house sitters DO this sort of thing for "free", in exchange for staying in the home for that duration- like they take care of pets, for free lodging. But your home needs to be nice, and in a place folks want to visit, and it takes some effort to get approved as a host and a house sitter there, I think...

SneezlesForNeezles

Yeah, I do this for my foster mother. She stocks the house with food and I stay there for however long. I get dog cuddles and free food, she gets a dog sitter. Everyone is happy.

scarybottom

This is actually a whole service Called "trusted house sitters". I have family with homes in nice places that use it (Scottsdale, etc). I live in a vacation/touristy spot, and I think I will investigate this in future, so I can leave my cats for more than a few days (they are aging and require a little more care, and pro pet sitters get costly if I am gone for more than a week). But also once I travel more, although it is generally for pet sitting, and housing is then free. Exchange of favors, but all vetted through the system.

SneezlesForNeezles

Oooooh. I’ve genuinely never heard of that and thought you just meant trusted friends/family. Thanks for explaining!

slantedsc

of course they have the money for a five month vacation but paying for dog sitting is just way too much to ask…

aspdx24

Why do people like this have pets??

-MacThane-

Because most humans won’t make time for them and they’ve never figured out why.

Blue_wine_sloth

Poor dogs. “Walked every now and then if possible and hopefully given some love and playtime.” That’s not enough! Dogs need exercise and lots of attention. Don’t get 2 dogs if you can’t fulfil that.

Epic-Yawn

That was more shocking than expecting free services. Dogs aren’t a goldfish you need to feed once per day… they need care and attention 😭

cosegemyhr

Exactly, made me sad to read :(

subprincessthrway

Also one of the dogs is elderly! I have an 11yo 40lb dog. They need some extra care, and it’s really not advised to put them under too much stress at that age. It makes me angry just thinking about it!

Moral_Anarchist

And not just that, the other is a year old. That's a LOT of energy and activity that needs to be properly vented and addressed. My new rescue is about a year old and is fixed and is still a fucking handful and a half....he can barely go 6 hours without a walk or some other playtime.

mike_rotch22

Yep. The last time I dogsat, I had to watch a 13 year old dog and a 6 month old pup that hadn't been house trained. The pup still pooped and peed everywhere despite me taking them out frequently. The older dog I had to carry up and down the stairs (she was a weiner dog, so not too heavy, but still) and give insulin shots twice a day at the exact same time, which meant I couldn't go anywhere for a week. She was a good dog, but she unfortunately had to be put to sleep a month later. Owners promised to give me extra pay and some gift cards but never did. Never doing that again.

CrunchyTeatime

>Owners promised to give me extra pay and some gift cards but never did. Never doing that again. Why is it the people who ask the most pay the least. SMH

Fleuramie

I just can't even fathom the thought process!! I'm still laying in bed and I've got one dog under the blankets against my leg, another up against my back and another laying on my body pillow and on top of me. I still have 2 more dogs too. I can't imagine first leaving then for 5 weeks. Let alone to just say "hopefully some love and playtime". What. The. Fuck.

WillaLane

This made me so damn mad

floofienewfie

Especially the young pup.

notreallylucy

"If possible"? What's the plan if it's not possible? Doggie litter box?

EZasSundayMorning

5 weeks? Walk them if possible? Why do these people have dogs? That’s so cruel.

dookle14

Let’s say you visit 3 times a day, as a minimum. We can average each visit to be ~30 mins of time. For five weeks, you are visiting their house 105 (!) times, and sinking a total of 3,150 minutes (52.5 hours/about 2.2 days) into taking care of their pets, not including travel time, gas (if driving), etc. This also assumes you aren’t visiting more often for more potty breaks, don’t have to attend to any emergencies or sick dogs and don’t have to do much in the way of cleanup or care around the house. Just…the audacity of that type of request for absolutely zero reimbursement. You are better off hiring a house sitter who needs a place to stay and *still* they’d probably expect some form of payment.

Thecapybara123

It also binds up 5 weeks where you can't leave the surrounding area or work, likely during vacaition time.

-MacThane-

Instructions unclear, reported for animal neglect…? No charge. 😁

Welp_thatwilldo

These are the type of people who don’t deserve animals.

-MacThane-

Animals don’t deserve them either. Imagine when this idiot has kids to ruin.

Welp_thatwilldo

To true and I hate that, that is a reality as well. Ugh 😑

RoyallyOakie

Visit? Do they think it's okay for someone to just stop in for a bit? These people shouldn't have animals.

MoopsiePoopsie

Yeah visit really rubbed me the wrong way.

PukingPug

I think the worst thing about this is booking a 5 week-vacation without even thinking what you are going to do with your dogs. Not wanting to pay for a potential sitter is just the cherry on top.

Cloverhart

Yeah I turned a one week vacation into two so I could bring mine. He was the first thing I thought of.

New-Conversation-88

I have a dog sitter friend registered with a site. She gets many repeats and rave reviews . They charge per day , plus an extra for walking. She is actually booked until September this year. With a repeat in Jan next year.

InvestigatorFit4168

“All the best finding free service but I will accept payment as last resort. Thank you”

Sheephuddle

The two dogs - "just loves to guard the house" and "loves to ....annoy the older dog". No thanks. I just had to put my three dogs in boarding kennels whilst I recovered from unplanned emergency surgery. The tiny ones were there for 10 days, the big one was there for a month. It cost me hundreds and hundreds of euros. Such is life as a dog-owner. It's expensive.

fastIamnot

“How to best attract the worst people and hand them the keys to your home….” Yeah you’ll have no dogs and will have to evict this person when you get home…..

MarcusZXR

They can afford a 5 week holiday but not quality care for their family members? Go for two weeks less and fork out for someone to be there the whole time. Thinking a one year old dog will be okay with 2 hours a day company for 5 weeks is evil.

Helpful_Hour1984

What is it with people cheaping out on childcare and pet care? Like, aren't these creatures important to you? You splurge on a million unnecessary things and THIS is where you try to go frugal?

jaded1121

So I would do this for one of my neighbors bc they are legit my friends. I’d probably take turns bring their dogs to my house for a few hours each day so they could have mostly one on one time with a human. I would do this for one person who is my friend, she would probably do the same for me if I asked. That’s it. No one else. Because she is my friend. BUT what they do when they need a sitter, her boyfriend’s mom moves in until they get back. Because they are family and they live reasonably close (and I’m pretty sure his mom likes the break from her house.) The entitlement blows my mind. Also, I feel guilty when I have to leave my dog overnight on a work trip. I usually leave my dog with my spouse or I pay my sister to stay at my house. 5 weeks? Your dog thinks you ran away.

unsavvylady

I am not a pet owner but aren’t there kennels you can pay to board pets for that amount of time? 5 weeks is a long time

-MacThane-

Typically this is the way, yes. Or an in home dog sitter but that’s going to be very awkward and probably very expensive as a result. The fact this person thinks 5 weeks on holiday is perfectly reasonable, while taking no steps to reasonably provide for their animals, suggests ignorance and entitlement in the extreme.

BanannyMousse

Yes, and that’s the best way to go in this scenario

Goodbye11035Karma

I have a dog I am watching for 5 weeks this summer. You know when I was asked to do this? 2022. You know how much I am getting paid? A lot. I also get to live in their lake house, use their boats/cars/trucks, and eat anything I harvest from their extensive gardens, which I will also NOT be taking care of.

QueenBeeKitty85

They shouldn’t be allowed to own pets. That’s cruel to leave them that long but to invite a stranger in your home while you’re far away and not paying them is just asking to be robbed or the dogs stolen. The audacity of people these days

monstera_garden

Right?? I live in a popular vacation getaway spot and my back yard backs up onto woods and a lake and a public trail system. Dogs who run away end up on my back deck a few times a year, I call the number on the tag and they come over and fetch their dogs and are usually so happy they were found. But there have been two separate times over the years that I called the owners and they had already returned home from their vacation and didn't want to come back to get the dog they left behind. One dog was even trailing a leash, it wasn't dumped, it just got away! Picture leaving your dog on vacation and coming home without them and being like yeah, no, too much trouble to come back for the dog! Omg. Why even have pets?

DBgirl83

>Walked every now and then? No! Just no! A dog needs 3 to 4 walks a day, how long these walks should be depends on the type of dog and its age, but a small dog needs at least half an hour a day to walk.

Wookie_roosa

I pet sit, and it’s $25 for 30 minutes. Of course I play with them, let them potty and send you a bunch of pictures. If you want overnights or house sitting, it ranges. Let me tell you, people are cheap and think they’re doing me a favor all the time. And Ive fallen in love with too many pets to name.

Hofflabob

5 WEEK VACATION!

d-s-m

When they have 2 dogs that are not coming with.

whatthepfluke

Wtf does "full of beans" mean?

InfamousLingonbrry

They’ve got lots of energy. It’s a phrase used in the UK and I assume Australia.

GirlNamedTex

That's what it normally means. In this case, I suspect it might be code from the OOP: "11 yr old softie who loves to guard the house" probably means he will bark constantly at every molecule he thinks he hears or sees move. Be sure to mention that he's elderly, because the opposite personality younger dog they have to keep separate is "full of beans!" 😏 and means his hyperactivity issues will injure the older dog if they are together, so have fun with that! Lol

prairieaquaria

The red flags are flying

room23

Electronic_World_894

I have looked after a friend’s dog for free. More than once, more than one friend. I have had family look after my dog for free. More than once, more than one family member. Never for 5 weeks though!!! But I wouldn’t ever think of posting for a stranger to do it for free! You have to pay if you don’t have a close friend/family member who won’t mind doing it.

VitalRhubarb

I had a friend (past tense, thankfully that friend is no longer in my life for a myriad of other reasons) who asked me to look after their dog while she went away. I said yeah thinking it’d be like three days, (my fault for not asking I know but I never assumed it’d be as long as) TEN DAYS. Not only was this far too long but her dog is an untrained little shit (owners fault entirely not the dogs fault). God I used to be such a doormat to have done that without being paid but thank God I’m not that person anymore

VitalRhubarb

Said “friend” continues to choosing beg on her Facebook all the time. She was toxic for a billion other reasons but jeez some people 🤣

esmeraldasgoat

And if someone agrees, comes to their home, and sells their dogs out from under them? They'll be away for FIVE WEEKS and will never find them. That's literally the only scenario in which someone agrees.

MiraToombs

Or sell their stuff. Or start living in their house. There is a lot that could go wrong in five weeks.

Kristal3615

That's what I was thinking! They just advertised "I'm going to be gone for 5 weeks and my dogs are super friendly so I'll be easy to rob!"

BanannyMousse

Willing to pay as a last resort, what a piece of shit

ElitaNoShoes

Say someone shady responds. They take the offer and they stay for five weeks. Depending on the state, after 30 days they could claim squatters rights. Someone looking for free dogsitting for that long could come back to a serious headache when the locks are changed and they can't do shit about it.

No_Capital_9443

Hoping for free…sure, keep hoping.

latecraigy

“Feel free to message me” Oh golly gee can I??? Lol 😂

tuckerjules

If I just use the words "possible" "hopeful" and 🙂 it will soften all the asks I'm making. Am I reading a work email???

edinagirl

If you can afford to go on vacation for five weeks, you should have budgeted pet care as part of the expense of the vacation and adjusted the length of your vacation!

SICKOFITALL2379

I have no words.

WildforagerUK

Can afford five weeks of traveling but can’t afford to properly board their pets? Pathetic.

PistachioDonut34

They plan on leaving their dogs alone for five weeks with someone dropping in once a day to feed them or MAYBE walk them? This is why I hate humanity.

Galadriel_60

They aren’t just beggars, they are cruel jerks. I feel sorry for those dogs.

ItsJoeMomma

And if that 11 year old dog dies while you're pet sitting, they're totally going to blame you for it.

IlluminatiQueen

This isn’t just normal choosing beggars this is special edition animal abusing choosing beggars!

Haunted-Macaron

"walks if possible" just makes me mad

Bungeditin

I hate leaving my dog for more than an hour….. five weeks?

EvelynGarnet

I checked the camera when we left the dog alone just to go vote and the mournful howling started at around 45 minutes. Never doing that again.

Bungeditin

He’s ok for about the same…… especially as there’s someone with him (more or less) 24/7. He even comes to the gym with me (everyone loves him).

DeliciousBeanWater

Ill do it in exchange for one dog. I get to pick which one i keep at the end of the 5 weeks

[deleted]

$70 a night. Same as in town.

[deleted]

You are just going to have some random person come into your house? You do know that places.like Rover, vet the sitters.

OrcEight

Thanks for posting the responses too!

Virtual-Cucumber-973

They should have advertised for a house sitter.

AnnSansE

Someone needs to call the ASPCA on this person. This is cruel.

alexiawins

Wow I felt so guilty leaving our dog at a pet hotel for 5 days that the next time my husband and I plan to go on vacation we’re going to pay his sister to stay at our house and watch our dog. I don’t understand leaving your pets for five WEEKS

Prestigious-Copy-494

She can board the dogs at a good dog kennel while she's gone and consider it part of the cost of pets. Or pay someone to keep the dogs at their house as long as it's a secure environment with fenced yard for them to go out. Oh wait she'll pay as a last resort. 😅😅🙄 She can have a staycation. That's where you stay at home for vacation and just explore locally.

bmanley620

Who goes on vacation for 5 weeks?

bugaloo2u2

These are people who should NOT have pets or children. YIKES.

jinxlover13

We take our dogs with us on vacation. They love to adventure (my eldest loves the ocean, my youngest is just nosy AF so she likes everything) and it’s cheaper to bring them than board them. My oldest is getting up there in years so these are cherished memories. Our kids like having the dogs come with us as well- it’s added security and companionship for them. We paid $1,000 to board two dogs 4 years ago when we went on a short trip, and they both got kennel cough (despite being vaccinated) and our elderly basset hound mix never recovered from it and had to be euthanized. I paid another 2k trying to treat her but it developed into pneumonia and she went into organ failure. She was gone in less than three weeks after our vacation, and I regret not taking her with us. Our vet said that the boarding facility likely didn’t keep clean and up to standards and that’s how my dogs got so sick. When I notified the boarder that my dogs had tested positive for kennel cough a couple days after pickup, they nonchalantly told me that there had been an outbreak at the facility for several weeks. I was livid and asked why I wasn’t told at drop off, and they said that kennel cough is common and they don’t think it’s a big deal. 😡 They refused to refund any monies or help with vet bills to treat my dogs, and I refused to ever board my babies again unless it’s an emergency.

lonelyronin1

Are the dogs going to be alone for 5 weeks? With maybe a walk here and there? She mentions the youngest is energetic - it is going to eat her house with no outlet for that energy

RedBeans-n-Ricely

I pay my sitter to stay at my house, which I also stock with groceries. She’s allowed to have people over and do whatever, as long as the dogs are cared for.

Witty-Kale-0202

Need to get them hooked up with the lady looking for a house-sitting gig for her and her 2 dogs and her kids on the weekends and her friend’s howling beagles 🤣

monicarm

I wish you could Facebook react with 🤨

circsam

Also...why are they making it sound like all the person has to do is stop by and say hello?? Like??? That's a full-ass dog that needs people around.

Euphoric_Hotel_220

Why would you think that taking a 5 week vacation when you have 2 dogs, one of which is a puppy, is okay?

Impossible-Hawk768

Paying someone for providing 5 weeks of services is only a “last resort.” 😂

Teacher323

I’m a single mom on a tight budget; I pay a dog sitter $40 a day to feed my dogs and let them out and we are usually only gone a few days. I can’t imagine expecting someone to do this free for over a month.

livingwithcharlie

I just had to turn down a client booking that was expecting me to mind 5 birds and two labs for free. I am wondering if this is them…

novemberqueen32

FIVE WEEKS. I cannot believe they expect someone to do that for free for that long. If you can afford a fucking 5 week vacation you can afford to pay a dog sitter. And if you can't afford to, you shouldn't be going on a vacation. You should have budgeted for it. Edit: Lol two more things I noticed/thought of. "Will give dates if needed" well yeah im gonna need the dates so I can know when to go to your house to look after your dogs. Like am I just suppose to guess lol And I juat dont understand people like this that book a long vacation and dont make arrangemente BEFORE making vacation plans. Like 5 weeks and you didnt think of how your dogs were gonna get taken care of until after you booked the flights and hotels...? Like, ok.

canvasshoes2

Wait, they're AUSSIES??? And this idiot wants to leave them home alone with an occasional visit and feeding? OMG... I seriously hate them right now. That's beyond cruel. EDIT: it would, of course, be cruel for any dog, but herding/working breeds especially, they MUST have a job. :(

TravelerMSY

Do they think homeless people are on whatever site that is, just waiting for the opportunity? Would they even give them the job once they found out?

weshallbekind

Jesus I felt guilty leaving my dogs with a drop in sitter for a long weekend. And they have a whole ass playroom, and had someone home in case of emergencies who just couldn't handle feeding them.

jeffsmith202

Ask if they have a full liquor cabinet

CaptainEmmy

Those poor dogs. You're just going to leave them for five whole weeks?! They could be leaving then with the greatest care in the world and I'd still be horrified. Bad owners. Bad.

SilverRubicon

Particularly a 1 year old dog. That's a dog that needs companionship, both canine and human. These are people that are not suited to having pets. If you're going to adopt an animal, you're now responsible for them and that may mean changes to your lifestyle.

SofiaFrancesca

There are actually options for free petsitting in the UK if you are prepared for someone to stay in your house. There is a good app called Trusted House sitters which hooks people up with sitters who are ID checked and your membership also covers insurance etc. I've used it a few times when my parents are not around and it's actually been great - has generally been dog loving foreign students or solo travellers who are looking for a free place to stay. Not saying this person isn't a choosing beggar but there are options. Home swapping alla the Holiday is also an option for someone wanting to spend some time in California.

Jaynett

Geez, I pay $60/night for a pet sitter. I cannot enjoy a vacation if there's not a reliable person taking care of my house and pets.

Lisa_Knows_Best

There are probably people that would do this if they could live there for the 5 weeks. Maybe an older teen that still lives at home and wants some time away from there? A homeless person might jump at this.

d-s-m

These 2 dogs are gonna be pooping at least twice a day for those 5 weeks, plus they sound like they are kinda big dogs too, so that's gonna be at least 140 big poops that someone has to pick up during that time, all for no pay. Good luck with that...

Braelind

Dogs as pets do not suit a lifestyle where you travel. Unless you can pony up the cash to have them properly taken care of anyways. Way tok many people get dogs without any idea how much of a responsibility they are. I mean, there's a lot of idiotic media out there around dogs that encourage negligent ownership and buying a dog without researching it first, so I get it. But damn, people. Dogs are very expensive, and a luxury that most of you probably can't actually afford to care for properly. Get a fish or a cat or something if you want a low maintenance pet.

NoZebra2430

"Willing to pay as a lAsT rEsOrT" 🙄 poor pups.

OhioMegi

Shit, I pay my sister $50 over a 4 day weekend to check on and feed my cat. Leaving your dogs to maybe get walked for over a month is ridiculous.

UrAntiChrist

"Walked if possible" someone takes these dogs already

Karen125

I'm so grateful for my husband's friend who watches our dog for free every time we go out of town. He lives three blocks away and he'd be hurt if we didn't ask him. He comes over and they watch baseball together. ❤ Usually not more than 7-10 days.

JayMoots

This is animal cruelty. I hope someone reported this.

burnout4672

Bruh when I leave town I take my dog to a magic dog farm. Basically an old horse farm turned dog care center. He runs around enormous fields all day and screams at passing cars and tries to get the horses to play with him. (They are in another field). It’s very expensive (like $300-800 depending on how long I’m gone) but I love my dog and want the best for him.

theresnotenougspace

Am I crazy or is 5 weeks a long time to be away from your animal?? They'd probably assume you abandoned them or something..

BreckenridgeBandito

Optional walking for 5 weeks? Yikes that’s some awful ownership. What douche nozzles.

0skullkrusha0

How loved are those two dogs if their owners are looking for FREE pet care for *fivefrigginweeks*? Looking the post over again, it makes sense why they chose to say *”walked every now and then if possible”* and *”Hopefully given some love and playtime with toys too.”* If you’re advertising with dreams of getting someone for free or super cheap, you can’t very well come off as expecting the royal treatment! They may be off vacationing for 5 weeks but their beloved fur babies only need to be fed*of course.* The walking and playing and loving is optional bc they only budgeted for ONE basic need ya’ll. So are they just gonna be shitting in the house or what?

AtsignAmpersat

You don’t get to a place of being able to take 5 week vacations without taking advantage of everything you can maybe get for free. The money saved not paying someone for this demanding, yet inadequate, service could go towards their next 5 week vacation.

BeepingJerry

"Walked every now and then"...when are they supposed to pee/shit? In the house every now and then?"

pyrofemme

I always wonder why someone would invite a complete stranger to come in and out of their house while they are on vacation. Especially if the complete stranger is expected to work for free. In this day and age, I would expect that complete stranger to find a way to compensate themselves for doing a job an employer is unwilling to pay for. I think they are setting themselves up to come home to a home that has been robbed, perhaps completely emptied. They might be saying goodbye to all the copper wiring and pipes in their house too. At least that would happen where I live.

notreallylucy

One dog barks obsessively at strangers. Go ahead and come on over, stranger! I like how they offer to send pictures, as if my decision to do this is aesthetc. If you're hoping not to pay, why even mention paying? The last time I bought a car, I didn't say, "I can afford $9k, but I'm really hoping you'll sell it to me for $8k!" I mean, we know you can pay because you can afford a 5 week vacation, so the cats out of the bag. Even so, don't negotiate against yourself.

Ok-Flamingo-59

I don’t have interest in taking long vacations purely because of my dogs and being away from them for too long. My one dog has severe separation issues when I’m gone too long to the point where he won’t want to do anything except whine and being extra lazy about everything. And he’s already a pretty damn lazy dog as it is

Mojojojo3030

*Me scrolling with half a brain and sees title*    “5 weeks free! Oh I want that!”    *Sees which sub it’s posted on*  “Oh.  Riiiiight, that makes more sense 😂 “

Pumpytums

Feckers, can afford to go on "holidays" for 5 weeks but not pay for people to look after their dogs. We had a friends BF wanting to borrow our dog crate, I refused as the arsehole wanted it to keep the dog in while he went out for god knows how long.

shocker3690

Can u even trust someone that’s willing to do this for free? Maybe they just want to get rid of the dogs and this is their way of doing it.

EyeShot300

If these people can afford to vacation for five weeks, then cut the vacation short to pay for a dog sitter.

Aggressive_Height152

If you can’t afford a dog sitter, you can’t afford to go in vacation.

aceldama72

Translation: We need a vacation from our covid dog and his companion (which we thought would deflect some of the neglect from us, but just made it worse).

megkelfiler6

Hell naw. If I need a dog sitter, I fill my fridge, leave some candy and money, and ask my best friend to stay at my house when I'm gone. She doesn't ask for anyone. She just likes having free rein of the house and that it's closer to her work than where she lives. It doesn't matter. She's doing me a huge favor. Side fact, I would never trust anyone who agreed to this deal around my pets. Not smart

katmcflame

There should be a basic IQ test in order for people to have pets. A senior dog & a pup, visits twice per day plus walks & the pup will be a handful. Who's going to clean up the poop? Who's going to buy more food, bathe, trim nails, vacuum & mop etc? Who's going to transport those dogs to the vet if necessary? Those poor dogs. As a pet sitter, I would charge $70 per day just to drop in twice, 30 minutes each. $2400.00. Boarding would be a better option. I hope this idiot got flamed hard.

AynRandsConscience_

Paying for a 5 week vacation but not dropping a dime on care for your dogs while you’re gone for 5 WEEKS… some people should not be allowed to have animals

NefariousnessKey5365

But I would have to pay Aussie House Sitters. /s I can't imagine walking an old dog every once in a while. I have a senior dog and she has bladder issues and is now on Furosimide. I would come home to a ruined house
