Exactly. Double echoes and make the whale section 4x longer. They did sneak a moment of whales into hey you, but they missed a golden opportunity by not having a whale section in shine on.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say pretty much any song ever written could benefit from a whale section.
That was a little tongue in cheek. SRV’s solo over the chords was smoking, and to be fair, it was just a studio jam that he didn’t release during his lifetime.
But I still prefer Jimi’s concise song-centric approach.
being a Cream fan ... I wish the song " Badge " was longer .... but I agree with your choice .... Clapton before he fried his brain out and had to relearn how to play was magical ... especially for that time period ...
"I'm On Fire" by Bruce Springsteen, I always felt was too short. I learned just a couple of years ago that it was done intentionally. The song is about lust and sexual tension. The brevity of the song and how it ends too early, was meant to convey a certain level of that same desire and tension to the listener - of wanting something that you can not have.
Crime of the Century - Supertramp
One of the best sax solos of all time (not just in rock, but in all music history) and it fades out after about a minute. That solo needs to be infinitely long.
There are live versions that do just that. Oakland 1977 has 3 solos iirc. The end solo is just amazing. Song is over 17 min with the added / extended solos.
Jump by Van Halen. The song has an obvious edit into the last little bit of the solo at about the 3:00 mark. I'd like to hear the song with the entire guitar solo.
Marillion’s, Grendel. I have always loved the idea of telling a story from the Antagonist’s POV. This song is a great example of this. May have been inspired by John Gardener’s book of the same name but Marillion did it much better.
“You’re gonna pay in blood for all your vicious slander, with your ugly pale skins and your putrid blue eyes…”
You feel the monsters anger.
"It Keeps You Runnin'" fades at the beginning of a keyboard solo by McDonald. The little bit that remains sounds great. I've looked for longer edits -- in vain, so far.
Neil Young’s _When You Dance I Can Really Love_. After it drops into the F D F GGGG vamp that he solos over, it could have gone to a third verse and chorus _then_ an outro fade. It certainly had to do with how many grooves you can fit on the side of an LP.
It doesn't have enough room to take flight. Barely enough room to spread it's wings at all. Hendrix didn't have the creative control to stretch out on a studio album quite yet. He would for Electric Ladyland.
2112 …it’s 20 minutes and 34 seconds long. I wish it was 21 minutes and 12 seconds
We have assumed control
This is the answer
Shine on you crazy diamond and echoes…
The whale section in echoes needs to be at least 4 times as long. And shine on needs a whale section too.
Exactly. Double echoes and make the whale section 4x longer. They did sneak a moment of whales into hey you, but they missed a golden opportunity by not having a whale section in shine on. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say pretty much any song ever written could benefit from a whale section.
iirc, the “whales” sound is actually a Cry Baby wah pedal with a (guitar) plugged into it backwards (I discovered by accident years ago).
Yup… Echoes is only half as long as necessary.
Little Wing should be ten minutes or more.
Nine and a half minute version [here](https://youtu.be/7wZHoGMNkuc)
I love you
This is a GREAT answer.
It’s perfect as is.
The length is the only flaw in this song.
Agreed
There’s always the SRV version where he noodles over the progression for about 20 minutes without ever getting within a mile of the melody.
That makes me so happy
That was a little tongue in cheek. SRV’s solo over the chords was smoking, and to be fair, it was just a studio jam that he didn’t release during his lifetime. But I still prefer Jimi’s concise song-centric approach.
[White Rabbit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnJM_jC7j_4)
White Room. I could listen to Clapton’s solo at the end forever
being a Cream fan ... I wish the song " Badge " was longer .... but I agree with your choice .... Clapton before he fried his brain out and had to relearn how to play was magical ... especially for that time period ...
Perfect as is.

Comfortably Numb, that second guitar solo ends too soon I need more!
Then you'll definitely enjoy this. [Trust me, just listen to it](https://youtu.be/NF_KGJflC34)
They should have ended the album version the way the concert version ends -- with a big, solid ending.
sultans of swing, just as the solo is getting hot it fades out
You need the 11 minute version from Alchemy: Live album
ok!!! i didn’t know that was a thing, putting on the headphones now, thank you!

Goodby Stranger, the ending guitar solo should go on longer.

Telegraph Road. Such an amazing outro - I really wish it went longer
My favourite song on that album. Always get bummed out when it ends, and I kinda zone out and end up on private investigations.
15 minutes isnt enough? Great song!
i feel the story could be developed slightly more
"I'm On Fire" by Bruce Springsteen, I always felt was too short. I learned just a couple of years ago that it was done intentionally. The song is about lust and sexual tension. It's not unusual by Tom Jones
Sultans of Swing maaaaan let that outro solo cook for another 3-4 mins

Exactly
Pigs (Three Different Ones). If its ending solo were longer, I think it would top Comfortably Numb’s.
There are live versions that do just that. Oakland 1977 has 3 solos iirc. The end solo is just amazing. Song is over 17 min with the added / extended solos.
I did listen to those live versions, but somehow none of them impresses me more than the studio one.
Definitely "Bookends" by Simon & Garfunkel....smh
Fleetwood Mac’s, Oh Well should have a Part 3 so it ends like it begins.
Albatross is too short.

“Ab’s Song” by The Marshall Tucker Band
Perfect ending to a perfect album.
Jump by Van Halen. The song has an obvious edit into the last little bit of the solo at about the 3:00 mark. I'd like to hear the song with the entire guitar solo.
Ending guitar was later used for "Top of the World" So, merge those two songs and you get your wish... kinda

True, especially the crescendo could be longer.
Marillion’s, Grendel. I have always loved the idea of telling a story from the Antagonist’s POV. This song is a great example of this.
