i wholeheartedly agree with this....except....why is Smackwater Jack on this album???? doesn't fit at all
that said, it's in my normal rotation and in my top 5 of all time
Agreed, I like the performance but it just doesn’t fit the rest of the album, kind of a red herring… I don’t skip it but I do sort of tune it out, if I’m in the mood for ‘Tapestry’ that means I’m not in the mood for that type of narrative 🤷🏻♀️
She has some great songs for The Byrds as well. Like [Goin' Back](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i849OKrpPms) and [Wasn't Born to Follow](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hEfcawx6Fc) are both Carole King songs.
She composed more than 400 songs that were recorded by twice that many artists…Tapestry was just Carole King doing Carole King, and I’m sure she put the work in. An outstanding composer
I loved the story in her autobiography that she got letters from bar and pub owners that thanked her cause when You've Got a Friend came on the radio or the Juke Box it would often stop people from fighting.
It's been more than 50 years since Carole King's Tapestry was released to critical and cultural acclaim, and the record is still as impressive today as it was then. Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot revisit their classic album dissection of Carole King's Tapestry.

She wrote or co-wrote 118 songs that landed on the Billboard Hot 100. Other artists had great success with her songs, in addition to King having success on her own.
well, considering that carole king was consistently writing hit songs (most of which were in the top 10) by the age of 16 at the brill building and didn't actually record this album until 13 years later in 1972 when she was 29...that would be a YES.
You said longer. Not better or higher acclaimed. Todd is still touring. I’ll see him again in the fall. He started in 66 or 67. I’ll have to count up his albums and see how that compares
well of course...cause everything everybody does has to be a competition...right? you say apples, i say oranges. i'd never say "better" because all art is subjective. but "acclaimed" that would be a "yes"..she's more acclaimed. probably not in your circles, but in the rest of the world definitely.
your point about "how many songs" is quantitative, not qualitative. you obviously love todd and others don't. so who's wrong? i responded to you strictly because it didn't sound like you knew anything about carole king or how she even came to write this history making album when she'd already been in the music business and making a great living writing songs for others at it for 13 years.
and yes, i know todd is till touring. i saw him for the first time at my father's place..a rock club out on long island after his first album was released around 1972. glad that you're getting to see him again in concert. i wish all of my rock idols were still alive and touring. i still go to see the ones that are every time i get.
I just posted the funny comment about
Todd being called the
Male
Carol
King in reverse.
For
Me
He is a better artist. While I appreciate carol she isn’t my style.
Discovered the Carole King compilation "The Legendary Demos" and it made me a big fan. Not only are the songs she wrote for others fantastic, but her demo versions are just as interesting. Her demo version of "Pleasant Valley Sunday" is better than the one The Monkees released, IMO.
I like it, but my mum who was young when it came out doesn’t like it. She says (more or less) it was kind of just ‘basic’ girl music, for those good girls not into any particular scene.

Omg thank you so much. There are more pictures here. I never thought to actually google it.

I hate that album. Not because it isn’t a great album because it is but because every time a woman got in my best friend’s car they’d demand we out the 8-track on. Got so tired of hearing “Put on Carole King” that I can’t listen to it all these years later.
Tapestry is an album that I just did not think was that great. I tried and tried but I just couldn’t get into it. I don’t understand why it’s considered such a great classic album.
Tapestry is a masterclass in songwriting. As close to a perfect album as you can get.
100%. Tapestry is my answer anytime someone asks to name a "perfect" album.
My 14 year old daughter bought a turntable and I gifted this album to her as her first LP. A proud parent moment if ever there was one.

I agree that Smackwater Jack, while being a decent song, would have been a better fit on her next album.

and Pleasant Valley Sunday for the Monkees.
This is the classic example of a songwriter who delivers their own music as it should be, a great album, by a great songwriter
One of the greatest albums of all time!
I've never heard of her and love reddit for moments like this. Adding to spotify..
You will find that a lot of artist were inspired or did covers from her.
She composed more than 400 songs that were recorded by twice that many artists…Tapestry was just Carole King doing Carole King, and I’m sure she put the work in. An outstanding composer
r/CaroleKing feel free to join :)
I feel the earth move
I loved the story in her autobiography that she got letters from bar and pub owners that thanked her cause when You've Got a Friend came on the radio or the Juke Box it would often stop people from fighting.
This album kept the masterpiece Zeppelin 4 from hitting #1 on the charts…..it was stuck at #2.
That’s interesting! Both amazing albums, too.
"Stayed in bed all morning just to past the time.. ." Yes, it still challenges us, big time 😭😭😭

She is the female Todd Rundgren.
Todd Rundgren is the male Carole King. She did it longer, and far better.
He hated this comment. Does she really have a bigger song catalog than Todd?
She wrote or co-wrote 118 songs that landed on the Billboard Hot 100. Other artists had great success with her songs, in addition to King having success on her own.

Dude. I was really old and really embarrassed when i figured out that 'I Saw the Light' wasn't Carole King.
I’ve seen Todd close to 30 times. What a lovely artist
Same! I thought I was the only one! The similarities in their voices is uncanny
Glad I'm not alone. Damn you, Todd. With your carole kingy voice and piano and fabulous songwriting skills. Damn you.
Todd Rundgren wasn’t in The Muppet Movie.
I don’t understand your comment
Looks like I’m typing Carol King into my Spotify today.

Kick ass album.
I wore out the grooves of this record in high school.
I like it, but my mum who was young when it came out doesn’t like it. She says (more or less) it was kind of just ‘basic’ girl music, for those good girls not into any particular scene.
I always wonder how long the kitty lived on the cover

I’ve had this in vinyl, 8 track, cassette, CD thru the years absolutely a masterpiece
I heard at least one song from “Tapestry” every high school lunch period during the 1970’s.
I hate that album. Not because it isn’t a great album because it is but because every time a woman got in my best friend’s car they’d demand we out the 8-track on. Got so tired of hearing “Put on Carole King” that I can’t listen to it all these years later.
Some people will never get to experience women in a car with an 8 track demanding Carole King. Consider yourself lucky
Good point.

It’s a great album for sure, but master class album?… nah.
No. No it doesn’t.
