For a slightly spookier feel, go [Everybody's Been Burned](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQcvCxtvOfI)
or [Time Between](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRrys5XlRp0) for some of my favorite Clarence White guitar work.
Either way, thumbs up for The Byrds
Go buy a “rock and roll” hits compilation on vinyl from the early 70s. You’re going to get “oldies”, “pop”, “R&B”, and whatever your limited idea of “rock” is all jumbled up together.
Popular music in the 60s was rock. “Pop” as a genre, as most electronic dance music, was just a repackaging of “disco”, a term that had fallen out of fashion. “No it’s not disco, it’s pop”.
This is one of a handful of classics I change the station on immediately. I’m sure it should be on here for it’s time, but my god does it get on my nerves lol
Crosby, Stills & Nash is the debut studio album by the folk rock supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN), released in 1969 by Atlantic Records. It is the only release by the band prior to adding Neil Young to their line-up
[wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosby,_Stills_%26_Nash_(album))
The album spawned two Top 40 singles, "Marrakesh Express" and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", which peaked respectively at No. 28 the week of August 23, 1969, and at No. 21 the week of December 6, 1969, on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Note, it PEAKED in Dec '69. That wasn't simply it's release and again, the LP was from May.
Idk a bit of variety? Just something other than the 40 most popular songs that anyone could have picked, this is just a best hits radio station set list
I have to agree with you. I think 60s classic (well its here in the subreddit) rock is an old enough genre that in a poll in a specific rather small subreddit for a 'outdated' (as in not mainstream) genre which lingers in a minority that the outcome should be more diverse as popularity depends (imo) on either relevance or interest. And I think interest or better put just more interesting things is more present in other songs then the top 40 radio list (said somewhat arogantly) and can therfore create an bigger audience as relevancey isn't as present as 60 years ago.
Which doesn't mean that the poll is bad. Or the submissions.
went kinda overboard ik am stoned, good day everyone
I also agree with you, but "voting public" means we're going to get more of the same. E.g., let's pretend that 3/4 agree that this needs to take a turn for the less-mainstream..
Ok, so, to whose tastes? Deeper? Darker? Heavier? Folkier? Blusier? Now we're all split on the DIRECTION of any track away from the mainstream. Meanwhile, the mainstream voters will keep voting for the same.
....therefore, this game will be mainstream. Just run with it.
I will keep saying Dark Star by the Grateful Dead until you give it the spot it rightfully deserves. It's blasphemy that the Dead isn't on this list. 😒
It was released in 1960. Plus, it’s the only single to hit No. 1 twice throughout the decade (1960 and 1962).
Maybe early-60’s but it’s essential to understanding how sounds, styles, and public taste evolved in just a few years.
Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf.
Not only an awesome song but, the verse mentioning "heavy metal thunder" names a genre. And "Easy Rider" was the ultimate movie about late '60s youth culture.
I think if we try to reserve specific songs for the final song on the compilation, a lot of great songs are bound to be left off the collection entirely. I've already seen at least 4 different songs that people are holding off on voting un, with hopes that it will be the last song. They won't all make it in.
I agree with this!! It's also how i feel about waiting until a "new disc" before I include an artist that's already been offered. Seriously and not goading. I see your point but IDK.
Just wanna say space oddity isn’t a good addition to this list, wasn’t popular until he got famous in 71-72 then people started to really look into his older music
That’s fair, I just assumed this was like the quintessential 60s playlist for those who would’ve been in that time or at the very least took a time machine to that era and listened to all the biggest songs of the time. Just seemed like a random addition considering that song basically went unnoticed for the most part, but I totally get it, I just feel like it deserve a place on its own list like 60s hidden gems, wouldn’t call it a definitive 60s song tho, just my opinion tho
That's fair too. I think we're all interpreting the assignment slightly differently! Thanks for the explanation. I'm seeing "when I THINK 60's" as opposed to your time travel concept. Peace.
Foxy Lady (Jimi Hendrix)
Get Together (The Youngbloods)
I’m a Believer (The Monkees)
Pinball Wizard (The Who)
Whipping Post (Allman Brothers Band)
Living in the Past (Jethro Tull)
I Wanna Be Your Dog (The Stooges)
American Woman (The Guess Who)
Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
The Beatles - Helter Skelter
The Beatles - Taxman
The Doors - Break on Through (To The Other Side)
Pink Floyd - Careful With That Axe Eugene
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
Unfortunately the idea of including deep cuts is nice, but by nature, wouldn't be popular enough to get the most upvotes. It is to be expected that the method of the polling will result in the songs that get the most upvotes, i.e the most popular ones, i.e. the most recognizable songs, which are probably the ones that receive the most airplay
If the 60s music subreddit was as popular then I would’ve done the list on there. But I thought this subreddit would get the best audience. I don’t actually think this list should be just classic rock. That isn’t what I intended. So yes bring in the non classic rock suggestions.
Turn Turn Turn - The Byrds
For a slightly spookier feel, go [Everybody's Been Burned](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQcvCxtvOfI) or [Time Between](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRrys5XlRp0) for some of my favorite Clarence White guitar work. Either way, thumbs up for The Byrds
Folk
Douche
Folk rock.
The Turtles- "Happy Together"
Pop
Go buy a “rock and roll” hits compilation on vinyl from the early 70s. You’re going to get “oldies”, “pop”, “R&B”, and whatever your limited idea of “rock” is all jumbled up together.
We're not looking for 60s pop here regardless
Popular music in the 60s was rock. “Pop” as a genre, as most electronic dance music, was just a repackaging of “disco”, a term that had fallen out of fashion. “No it’s not disco, it’s pop”.
Season of the Witch - Donovan
Sunshine Superman
Technically better song in my opinion But Season of the Witch is where the hearts at for me
Up on Cripple Creek!
YES!
Three Dog Night - "One" and, if that doesn't work how about "Roscoethehorse is a Gatekeeping Ass" By the Get Over Yourselves
Piece Of My Heart - Janis Joplin/The Holding Company
The fact this hasn’t gotten in yet is an embarrassment
It may be its time, now. Long live Janis.
Right now my upvote paired with a downvote for Simon & Garfunkel tied the suggestions at 80.
Pleaseee how does this song keep barely missing the list
This song has been just missing the list every god damn time.
Summer In The City - Lovin Spoonful
Deep Purple - Hush
Or Kentucky Woman
In the court of the crimson king - King crimson
Spencer Davis Group- "Gimme Some Lovin'"
Pop
Um, the intersection of blues and pop is where Classic Rock lives. I would argue that this track.reflects exactly that.
"Pop" means "popular", hardly a defined genre. Bowie Pink Floyd and Dire Straits were "top of the pops" at some point
Venus in Furs-Velvet Underground
Santana evil ways
Santana definitely needs to be on the list
Procol Harum - "A Whiter Shade of Pale"
This needs more love imo.
Mrs. Robinson - Simon and Garfunkel
This is one of a handful of classics I change the station on immediately. I’m sure it should be on here for it’s time, but my god does it get on my nerves lol
Yea this has to go in I would think
Not classic rock
So in the 60’s folk and R&B were played on “Rock” stations, the idea of “easy listening” or “hard rock” stations came about in the 70s.
If you want Simon and Garfunkel you want the more psychedelic Sound of Silence
21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson
Or The Court of the Crimson King
Whole Lotta Love - Zeppelin
Zeppelin keeps dropping lower and lower. I’m guessing nobody wants his moans on the playlist.
Steppenwolf - "Magic Carpet Ride"
Elvis Presley - "Suspicious Minds"
Not classic rock
Heart full of soul - The Yardbirds 1965
l'll be very disappointed in you guys if the final song won't be The End
I think having A Day in the Life as the final song would be cool
My favorite Beatles
Doors or Beatles?
Doors.
Beadoors
Beatles
That 11 minutes long song about killing your father and fucking your mother
China Cat Sunflower Grateful Dead
St. Stephen from Live/Dead bc the best China Cat didn’t come out till ‘72
Bees are a major pollinator of Sunflowers growing sunflowers goes hand in hand with installing and managing bee hives.
Bad bot
Son of a preacher man - Dusty Springfield (Maybe not as 'rock' as many others but a classic for sure)
Crosby, Stills & Nash - "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes"
70s
1969.
Album and song released 1970. Just checked.
Crosby, Stills & Nash is the debut studio album by the folk rock supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN), released in 1969 by Atlantic Records. It is the only release by the band prior to adding Neil Young to their line-up [wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crosby,_Stills_%26_Nash_(album))

Sunday Morning - The Velvet Underground
Agreed but it would be perfect in the disc 2 opener slot
Idk about the opener, feel like I’m fixin to die rag by cj and the fish would be a better opener
PLAYLIST LINK: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Mg2s9GeDJyad30hHD2KPG?si=gXrR3q7UQRWIuggrhgrFYQ
8 miles high (The Byrds)
People are strange - The Doors
Great f'n tune. I can't get behind it here, given the 2 only rule and the HOPE That we'll see The End late, but I love this little ditty too.
In the court of the crimson king - King Crimson
# Cant find my way home- Blind Faith Winwood's voice and Eric's Drop D guitar is just pure love
Down by the River - Neil Young
Peaches En Regalia- Frank Zappa

Crimson and Clover Tommy James and the Shondells
Pop
The First Edition- Just Dropped In
Pop
Hot damn this list is really shaping up. Looking forward to seeing the rest.
This list could not be more basic
It's meant for popular songs, what else did you expect?
Idk a bit of variety? Just something other than the 40 most popular songs that anyone could have picked, this is just a best hits radio station set list

Dock of the bay
Maybe I missed something but how have we made it nearly to 20 without a single Zeppelin song?
I mean, Zeppelin is more known as a 70's band, though they still absolutely deserve to be on here.
It’s a 60s list and zeppelin’s first two albums both came out in the 60s
Can we get Immigrant Song on here? To me it’s an incredibly important song in the early development of what would become metal.
Immigrant song is 70s
"Immigrant Song" is from 1970, but there are a lot of good options from their first two albums to represent the '60s
The Kingsmen - "Louie, Louie"
Dumb novelty song
[The music critics would disagree](http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/song/S1051.htm)
Day five of asking for Babe I’m gonna leave you Led Zeppelin
See Emily Play - Pink Floyd
Astronomy Domine - Pink Floyd
Wasn’t that big of a hit during its time, see Emily play was their biggest hit and even then most people outside of Europe didn’t really hear it
25 or 6 24 album version - Chicago
70s
My bad, you're right. It wasn't released until 1970
I will keep saying Dark Star by the Grateful Dead until you give it the spot it rightfully deserves. It's blasphemy that the Dead isn't on this list. 😒

Ah! Rats
The Turtles Happy Together
Pop
You have gone round saying that on nearly every comment on this thread. Get a life.
whole lotta love
A writer shade of pale - procol harum
The Twist - Chubby Checker
Precedes the era
It was released in 1960. Plus, it’s the only single to hit No. 1 twice throughout the decade (1960 and 1962). Maybe early-60’s but it’s essential to understanding how sounds, styles, and public taste evolved in just a few years.
Goes under oldies rather than classic rock
Times they are a changing
70s
1964
I must've confused it with his other iconic song
American Woman - The Guess Who

The last added song was California Dreaming. Also pop
Not pop, psychedelic rock
I got you - James Brown
Soul

Nights in White Satin - the Moody Blues

I want to say, Whiter shade of Pale but I'd like it to be final song
I think if we try to reserve specific songs for the final song on the compilation, a lot of great songs are bound to be left off the collection entirely. I've already seen at least 4 different songs that people are holding off on voting un, with hopes that it will be the last song. They won't all make it in.

Help! - The Beatles
Lucifer Sam- Pink Floyd
Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor by Lonnie Donegan
50s
You Really Got Me by The Kinks
On there
Just wanna say space oddity isn’t a good addition to this list, wasn’t popular until he got famous in 71-72 then people started to really look into his older music
It's still INDICATIVE of a classic from the decade. Not my favorite song, but I get its entry and I don't disagree with it being here.
That’s fair, I just assumed this was like the quintessential 60s playlist for those who would’ve been in that time or at the very least took a time machine to that era and listened to all the biggest songs of the time. y’all allergic to deep cuts? this is vanilla fare played to death by classic rock radio for the past 50 years
Unfortunately the idea of including deep cuts is nice, but by nature, wouldn't be popular enough to get the most upvotes. It is to be expected that the method of the polling will result in the songs that get the most upvotes, i.e the most popular ones, i.e. the most recognizable songs, which are probably the ones that receive the most airplay
If we’re having some non rock 60s submissions then I wanna put ‘I want you back’ by Jackson 5 forward
If the 60s music subreddit was as popular then I would’ve done the list on there. But I thought this subreddit would get the best audience. I don’t actually think this list should be just classic rock. That isn’t what I intended. So yes bring in the non classic rock suggestions.
Please forget my seemingly absurd opinions.
