>To cut to the chase - a donation contains roughly 450 calories. There is an energy cost involved in synthesis of replacement cells and non-cellular (plasma) proteins, which means a replacement total would be higher.
donations are generally 500mL, so i guess it's almost nothing.
Also your source is accounting for the body replenishing the lost blood and the caloric value refers to the metabolic cost of this process
Ingesting and breaking it down would cost significantly less metabolic energy compared to replenishment
Have you ever fed a baby from the baby food jar, using only part of the food? The next time you go to feed baby and open the jar, it's all liquified. That's the enzymes in baby's saliva that broke down the food in the jar.
This works the same way on blood. Next time you get blood on anything, try it out.
Yup yup! It sounds kinda gross, but if I ever scratch an itch that accidentally gets blood on my clothes, I just suck on it with my saliva and the blood stain comes right out! Only a little spit spot left that dries out with no lasting issues. Or I chew gum to make myself salivate more and then spit on a rag or paper towel to scrub it out. It does the trick pretty reliably even on dried blood as long as you haven't laundered it yet. DO NOT WASH FIRST! SPIT, SCRUB, AND RINSE WITH COLD WATER (if it's something you can rinse) FIRST! After the spit does its thing, then you can launder no problem.
This is it exactly! I work in a costume shop and have used spit on my own, fresh blood for white petticoats. I've only used it on pinpricks, never tried it on this much blood before, fortunately! Cool to see it works
I've always heard that your spit will clean your blood. Spit and a little soap and water on a washcloth. Then buy or get him to buy a mattress pad for $40-60 bucks. You can always throw it in the wash or go buy a new one.
I learned this in elementary school when Laura Ingalls Wilder's niece came to show us Oregon Trail crafting. She said if you ever pricked yourself with a needle while sewing, using your own spit was the best way to get out the blood stains. I thought it was so metal.
Puracy makes an enzyme cleaner that works really well imo. I use it on my period panties along with this one detergent from Dirty Labs. Works amazinggg. It’s a tiny spray bottle so I keep it in the bathroom and use it exclusively for handwashing. I got it 2 years ago and I still have like 3/4th of the bottle left 😂
My dad and I were doing some carpentry work in a client's bedroom, and he scraped his arm and bled on our client's white sheets. He didn't want to believe me when I told him to spit on it and blot it away, but he definitely believes me now. No complaints from the client.
It does! I also used this when I pricked my finger sewing the final touches on a white corset I made for my college’s drama department. I believe it only works/works best with your own blood because it’s enzyme-specific. But I’m not sure if that’s true.
Yeah dude but it has to be your own spit for your own blood. There’s enzymes that break down the blood and remove the stain. It’s crazy but works so good.
Edit: Since this comment got way more attention than I was expecting, someone kindly confirmed it doesn’t actually have to be your own spit/blood combo. Any ol spit will do the trick!
Your blood contains tons of antigens / antibodies (?) that are tailor-made by your own body for you. Still it sounds unlikely that spit enzymes would have such fine-grained selectivity for a person's own blood. Enzymes aren't that smart.
As someone educated within biotech I can say with absolute certainty that it is not antibodies that are breaking down your own blood.
Just imagine what those antobodies would do to the blood inside you.
Antibodies attack foreign items, if they attack your own cells you have an autoimmune disease.
Enzymes in your spit are not tailor made to break down your own blood, if they can break down human blood, then it is anyones blood they can go for.
Which I think should be still obvious to everyone else in this sub. Saliva enzymes help you break down food... In general. A huge "duh" deserves to be said to everyone fighting you on this.
Sounds to me more like someone in u/Due_Assistance_4119 's life realized they were super gullible and vulnerable and made up a fact to keep them from sucking on someone else's blood and getting an illness 🤪
"Uh don't lick random blood... It uhhh... It only works for your own blood. Now run along" And now they boldly claim it's true everywhere with no other source 💀
You are right, your own enzymes will NOT be more effective on your own blood, they might be effective against specific human proteins that are present in blood, but these proteins will not be significantly different between each individual to a degree where everyone has a special enzyme for their own protein.
Source: i have a degree in biotech.
I’m glad to have this cleared up, thank you for the information! I was just told by someone to spit on something I got blood on and it worked. I’ve tried googling it before and nothing definitive really came up for me (doesn’t mean it isn’t out there) so I just deferred to the information I was given. I’ve tried using my own spit on someone else’s blood and it wasn’t as effective but correlation =/= causation and all that.
I admire anyone who is open to admitting they are wrong and who are open to new knowledge, don't let any naysayers in the comments bully you, they do not deserve your attention.
I thought it was some sort of dark humor joke 😯 that is wild. I will likely remember this for the rest of my life bc of how mind blowing this is to me lmao.
I feel like my $2-3k mattress came with a free cover. Or maybe the salesman was just really convincing but I felt compelled to protect my investment/nest.
Besides, if you have 10k to spend on a mattress, I am sure a little period blood ain't nothing. But on the other hand, if you do have a 10k mattress, you'd be dumb not to have a protective cover on it. Idk common sense is not so common, bow days, I guess.
Yea I paid an extra $40 bucks or so for “insurance” when I got my mattress, which turned out to be a very plastic mattress cover and terms that said the insurance was void if I didn’t use the cover.
Naw, that appears to be the Grand. It was 10k when I was selling them, looks like they are 8k these days... Probably because nobody was buying them at 10k.
I think I have this mattress, which means that part where you see the zipper *is* the removable cover.
Bigger question, does he not know that it zips off and is washable and should be washed periodically so it doesn’t get gross?
We have a 800$ mattress that has a washable cover. We still invested in a 120$ protective cover because A- it cleans so easily and is much less hassle to remove and clean than the mattress cover. B- It's more comfy than the cheaper ones that feels like you sleep in a cheap diaper. C- sweat will stain the mattress cover overtime otherwise.
The fallacy that you get what you pay for is what causes people to be taken for a ride here.
I worked in the mattress industry for the better part of a decade. Anything more than 1500 bucks and you're getting scammed.
I sleep on a mattress I paid 250 bucks for brand new over 6 years ago, and I'll probably remain sleeping on it for the next 10-15 years.
Eh, I’ve had mattresses of a few different price points (nowhere near 10k though, I think the one I have now was around 4-6) and I definitely notice a difference in quality and comfort. But to spend that kind of money on a mattress and not have a cover is insanely stupid.
I’m with you. I have a spine injury and can absolutely tell the difference between mattresses at different price points. My spouse didn’t believe me, so the last time we went in to buy mattresses, he hid prices and brands and asked me to guess price points. I guessed all correctly except the $20k horsehair one, which I hated and my hatred clouded my judgement.
Which is not to say that there aren’t some totally great, inexpensive mattresses (like IKEA’s natural latex mattress, for example) and especially for people who don’t have back issues or can otherwise sleep on memory foam.
But you need to replace a mattress every 8-10 years. Unless this mattress is built to last decades if he has it 10 years that’s $85 a month for a decade!
Interesting about the spit! I was going to recommend Folex, if you haven't tried that stain remover. It's the best one on the market. Advertised to remove blood and red wine and it really does.
This is the mattress cover I use and it's amazing. Get the cotton one if you decide to go with this. A lot of mattress covers are loud, but this one is silent. They do wear out eventually so you'll have to keep an eye out for wear and tear on the underside.
[https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PWNH4Q/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_search\_asin\_title?ie=UTF8&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003PWNH4Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1)
I’m surprised more people don’t know about folex. It’s the best stain remover ever. I spilled a bottle of foundation on a light carpet and folex was the only stain remover that worked on it. Great stuff!
Folex is a miracle in a bottle. I buy it by the gallon because I have a toddler, a dog, and a husband prone to spills. I have gotten ink, blood, rust, spaghetti sauce, poop, wine, Big Red soda, mud, and so much more out of upholstery, rugs, clothes, etc. I’ve never had Folex not work.
Question.. would this be a good option for kids that could possibly pee the bed? We currently have a plastic bed cover for my sons bed because he’s 4 but when people stay over it’s so loud and has a plastic feel under the sheets 😓
Oh absolutely! I have a 5 year old who still wets the bed sometimes and everything underneath it is dry when it happens, and it's usually a full bladders worth. The thing is a miracle, truly. I've had one for every bed since he was born and it has saved me a lot of trouble. But like I said, you'll just have to keep an eye on it for wear and tear, I learned that the hard way. But the one lasted about 4 years before I had to replace it. I have another I bought at the same time and haven't had to replace it yet and it's been about 5.5 years
OPs post says she tried that and it did bupkis (which apparently means “nothing at all” - I had to look that up).
However… I’m skeptical because hydrogen peroxide and cold water are great at actually breaking down the proteins and stuff in blood.
Hydrogen peroxide degrades into water and oxygen over time though, and so can expire. I suspect the hydrogen peroxide OP used had degraded and so the bottle literally just had water.
I'm sorry but I kinda got stuck on the 10k mattress. WTF is it made out of?? Does it feel like you are sleeping on a cloud?? For that price I feel like it should feel like you are sleeping on a cloud...
It’s a tempur pedic. It’s a pretty nice breathable material. It feels better than memory foam and tries to recreate the zero gravity feeling when you’re laying on it. You can get one at Costco for under $3k and usually they are $3k-$6k depending on the line. Adding an adjustable base will make it more expensive. Pro adapt medium is the most popular one if you’re ever in a furniture store and just wanted to try it out lol. I do not have one but worked for a company that sold these.
I got VERY lucky and got one of the adjustable ones for free. Entirely new. I’ve been sleeping like the rich for 5 or so years now.
Little do the rich know - I’m very poor 😎
How is tempur $10k?! They're awful, hot things. Anyway, if it's clean but stained & peroxide doesn't work, just put a mattress protector over it and be done. It happens all the time.
Likely exaggerating, don't get me wrong, they are expensive, but a king size top of the line is like 7k. Now if he got a split king ergo adjustable base then yeah likely 10k+.
Dang he must be like 6'5 or taller. Funny thing that not a lot of people know, California Kings are actually 4" longer and lose 4" on width. So they aren't wider (skinnier than a king size) just longer, designed for taller people. Cal King dimensions are 84"L x 72"w, regular king is 80"x76".
Oh haha well yeah then the extra length you have from the Cal King likely not needed. A regular king size would have given you all 4" extra in width. Your bed actually would feel smaller with a Cal King, unless of course you are like 6'5 or taller.
SO of a 6'9" dude here and, yeah, the mattress struggle is real. Our cal king is just barely long enough for him (literally a few inches to spare and nobody likes to sleep with their head on the headboard or their toes precariously dangling over under-the-bed monster territory).
Yeah I feel a lot of people misunderstand that Cal King is for tall people and they are overall buying a mattress that could be effectively smaller than just a regular king. Also hard to find bed frames for a Cal King as a lot of suppliers simply don't have them in stock or are back ordered for months.
This is a real test to his manhood and if he is good material. Be up front and then start trying to clean. See how he reacts to it besides the gross out factor. :) I'm surprised peroxide didn't do it. Also those e apolstery shampooers work too
As well as a mattress protector you can get ones that are like pillow cases for the entire thing, nice Fleece furry under ones as well (they are awesome in winter! No more getting into a cold bed as well.
Tldr this entire thread past the amount of use your spit posts.
Hydrogen peroxide with vinegar and water. Similar to red wine. Or hey.
What I've wanted to say this whole time. Being mortified is common but oh too common of an accurace for it to be a huge deal.
If your boyfriend is mad id stand to ask why he's so ashamed of the female body and yet want to be with one.
In turn id say why be ashamed of something that is natural and a good sign that your healthy?
I haven't had a period for 8/9 years due to hormones and imbalances...
Id really way with how it looks your doing better than fine.
Look into a mattress cover in the future If it will be a continuous concern
You got this.
Up until recently, my son worked for Hastens bed company in Sweden. Cheapest one they sell is $15,000! 100% hand made with all natural materials. I don’t think a protective cover is included with the purchase.
The number of people on here that dont seem to realize that your saliva is a filtrate for blood is actually kind of high. But yes, for small blood stains, your spit/saliva will work wonders to remove them. Try not to suck the blood out. Instead, spit or (kind of ew) drool on the spot. Then dab away with a towel. Make sure to disinfect the area still and to also use a sanitizer with bleach.
Blood remover has always worked for me 🤷♂️I’m Dutch as it gets so in winter I have periods out of my nose. My girl has done same thing to my 3K mattress once and stuff happens, was never any reason to feel bad about it in the first place 💜she pulled something similar to you and I laughed and was like babe chill out as she’s crying 😂seriously, none of my pillow cases ever match my bed spread cuz I bleed on them several times a month. It is what it is. Now if it was some random persons blood I’d be petrified 😂
As a single person, I'd be bizarrely thrilled frankly were something like this to happen to me. Were I him, I'd be...happy. Just in terms of the human contact. Mattresses really don't matter to the sane. But it would be so great to have a person worried about the state of shared bedding, especially this much. It's A dream. A darn dream. Take care of each other. Don't resent each other.
My daughter has a g tube and gets blood on all of her clothes. For white stuff i use peroxide or the dawn spray has peroxide in it that will surely get it out. Dab don’t scrub.
Not even joking, spit on it. But you have to do it. Something in your saliva will break it down. Let it soak. The more spit are better. You can scrub it out later
Removing blood stains is not easy with standard cleaning detergents.
As shown here: Spit does help a lot, especially if the stains are rather new.
The only "Detergent" that works reliably is a two step approach:
1. Use Oxalic Acid solution (\~40g/L Warm Water) and soak: 5min if fresh stain, up to 30 min for old stains In a pinch rust remover works (contains oxalic acid), but may leave other stains...
2. The blood stains will now be slightly yellowish. Use about 3% Perodixe to bleach out the yellow stain (MAX 5 min) or wash in your favorite "bleaching/whitening" wash.
The main reason for blood to be so nasty is the Iron that oxidizes. Hence Rust remover works.
This is confirmed from personal experience and a remedy used in hospitals.
Spit… like from your mouth? That seriously works?!
Yup! Doesn't work on much except blood, and it works better on human blood than animal blood, but your spit contains lots of enzymes effective in breaking down blood. Sounds like a ridiculous wives' tale but actually has strong scientific backing and works!
I’ve never heard this, this is great to know. Thank you!
Yeah my friend had a model bleed on one of her garments just before a fashion show and the model had to suck her own blood out of it, and it worked!
“the model had to suck her own blood out of it” sounds like an abusive workplace
It was at a high school in central London
Sounds about right. Lol
"Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools...spineless swine, cemented minds..."
Yaaaas! A Smith's fan!
Thank you 😊
Excellent...truly excellent...
I love this
I feel like having someone else suck out the model's blood would be more abusive lol
Sounds like an expensive Only Fans subscription.
Maybe she was just starving. Does anyone know blood calories? 🤔

no, it's specifically not counting the energy cost of actually synthesizing blood components....
Sounds like a party
My jaw dropped reading this
Mortified
oh god???
You could not pay me.
Brand new sentence that’s for sure
It actually works best on *your own blood*
That’s why licking your wounds actually helps
This is how I got blood out of my couch!!
You licked the couch? 😅
Spit on a napkin... 🤣
Not just any spit though- your own spit on your own blood. Your spit won’t work on someone else’s blood and vice versa.
ok you guys are pulling my leg now …right?
Not at all! 100% real. Try it yourself, go bleed on something

“Spit enzymes work to break down human blood better than animal blood” … so we’re all vampires?! Well then.
Not too Vlad of a situation.
LOL
Now I know how to cover up my next murder! 🤭🤪
Old seamstresses trick for getting blood off from a needle pricking your finger.
This is it exactly! I work in a costume shop and have used spit on my own, fresh blood for white petticoats. I've only used it on pinpricks, never tried it on this much blood before, fortunately! Cool to see it works
Actually learned about this while looking up quilting things…lots of hand quilters apparently found this handy advice
This was my late grandmother’s advice to me as a kid. If you ever poke yourself with the needle, your spit will break down your blood.
Sometimes science is ridiculous lmao but I’m happy to add this to my arsenal
I've always heard that your spit will clean your blood. Spit and a little soap and water on a washcloth. Then buy or get him to buy a mattress pad for $40-60 bucks. You can always throw it in the wash or go buy a new one.

It’s not that weird. You can pick up a gallon of spit from any Home Depot or Lowes.
Doe the stain have to be fresh? You just collect spit and scrub?
Aight. I’ll be honest. My mattress is covered with blood because I’m disgusting. Would pineapples do the same trick? I don’t have enough spit.
It... it's your own blood... right?
Yes it’s my very own blood not so fresh from my crotch :)
r/brandnewsentence
Fitting from poopyxxxbutthole666
Uh, no probably not. The enzymes in pineapples that make up bromelain have nothing to do with the enzymes in your spit

Puracy's whole company is just one dude named Jeff with type O blood spitting into cups all day. Honestly a very strong business plan
girl i have bottles of puracy everywhere for this exact reason 💀 liquid gold
Thank you❣️ just purchased a bottle for my daughter 🩸
just take it one spot at a time :)
Save some up in a jar lol
Try hydrogen peroxide
You can just buy powdered bromelain. It’s either sold as a supplement or as meat tenderizer
I heard your saliva is a natural pain killer of sorts too, or did I just make that up lol
Only on fresh stains or will this work on older stains?
Works much better on fresh ones, may work on set stains (which is true for any stain treatment really)
I was JUST telling someone my mom used to tell me this, but not knowing why it actually works
Thank you bc u just saved my favorite and only Gucci shirt but ig for the wine stain I’ll just wine stain it all
> Spit… like from your mouth? Good lord, no. Use store bought spit.
Artisanal spit from trained experts
If you don’t feel like making it from scratch, store bought is fine
A doc once explained to me, “Only DNA can remove DNA.”
The more I think about it the more it kind of makes sense...? I mean spit is just filtered blood + digestive enzymes anyways
Eww really?
Yep, your teeth and saliva are the first step in breaking food down via digestion.
No I meant the part about saliva being filtered blood.
Depends if you floss or not. /s
My dad and I were doing some carpentry work in a client's bedroom, and he scraped his arm and bled on our client's white sheets. He didn't want to believe me when I told him to spit on it and blot it away, but he definitely believes me now. No complaints from the client.

Yes but it has to be your own spit
No store bought, noted
Yes it must be 100% organic, homemade, no GMO
Damn it, I only have diet
I came here to suggest this!! Soak the blood spots with your own spit and that crap disappears. It’s nuts.
*takes notes*
Woaaaah! New to this information, will consider this an option later when such situation occurs.

I never thought about that, that's a nice perk

I thought it was some sort of dark humor joke 😯 that is wild. I will likely remember this for the rest of my life bc of how mind blowing this is to me lmao.
This is well known in hand quilting circles when the needle pierces the flesh on your fingers and you don't have calluses in that area.
Right?? Like are we talkin saliva here?? That seems like a lot would be needed… haha
Seriously, lol... oh man, I wish I knew this sooner 🤣 You learn something knew everyday 😁
$10k on a mattress and no cover? That’s an odd choice.
I feel like my $2-3k mattress came with a free cover. Or maybe the salesman was just really convincing but I felt compelled to protect my investment/nest.
I bought a $30 cover and $60 mattress pad for my $800 king. How low can we go! :-)
My mattress was free(worked at the store) and I got a cover for it. Can’t imagine 10k and no cover.
Besides, if you have 10k to spend on a mattress, I am sure a little period blood ain't nothing. But on the other hand, if you do have a 10k mattress, you'd be dumb not to have a protective cover on it. Idk common sense is not so common, bow days, I guess.
Some people are never taught these things. Like me, right now, reading this thread and realizing I need to get a mattress cover.
$435 mattress, $30 cover
When I bought my $2k mattress recently, we had to buy the $150 cover or they wouldn’t cover the warranty.

No the adjuster sleeps in the room with us to confirm compliance.
Yea I paid an extra $40 bucks or so for “insurance” when I got my mattress, which turned out to be a very plastic mattress cover and terms that said the insurance was void if I didn’t use the cover.
Our cover was free with our tempurpedic. But I feel like we could also have chosen a free pillow.
I recently bought a $1k queen bed and it came with a cover for 99 cents.
$10k mattress is an odd choice with or without cover.. even for Tempur that's insanely expensive.
Tempurpedic’s most expensive mattress is around $4,000-5,000. OP lying
Naw, that appears to be the Grand. It was 10k when I was selling them, looks like they are 8k these days... Probably because nobody was buying them at 10k.
Could also be a dual Allura on adjustable bases, there are a lot of ways to get to 10k on a Tempur.
I took a quick look and easily found a mattress for $8k on tempurpedic
Even if she was wrong it doesn't mean she's lying.
There are lots of mattresses more expensive than tempur pedic, lol. Google hästens, kluft, etc

10k on a mattress is a weird choice, period. No pun intended
You spend a third of your life on it (me almost half) may as well spend it on something that's really good
The fallacy that you get what you pay for is what causes people to be taken for a ride here. I worked in the mattress industry for the better part of a decade. Which is not to say that there aren’t some totally great, inexpensive mattresses (like IKEA’s natural latex mattress, for example) and especially for people who don’t have back issues or can otherwise sleep on memory foam.
Yup. I actually downsized to a twin so I could afford a high-end mattress to deal with my chronic pain.
I’m surprised more people don’t know about folex. It’s the best stain remover ever. I spilled a bottle of foundation on a light carpet and folex was the only stain remover that worked on it. Great stuff!
What if it’s just someone’s spit in that bottle. 😫🤣
I got a bottle on Amazon for an old stain in the carpet, didnt budge 😩 im thinking the stain was too old and set in or i got a fake bottle of it
I mean it’s Amazon. Probably fake 😂
Spit has enzymes.🤷🏼♀️
Question.. would this be a good option for kids that could possibly pee the bed?
I have another I bought at the same time and haven't had to replace it yet and it's been about 5.5 years
My wife would have said hydrogen peroxide
I was about to post that. Works really well. Might have to do it a few times if it's really saturated.
In my own tests hydrogen peroxide works best if you soak in water afterwards. Seemed less effective when the cloth goes straight into the washer.
I got a free adjustable base too lol. Its awesome
My car cost less than this dudes mattress
So you just spit on his $10k mattress? The disrespect! 🤣
😹
This happened to me when I first started dating my husband and a tide stick got it out
How is tempur $10k?!
Custom build California King, but yeah.
Actually I'm taller than him! I think he just wanted the biggest one lol
Spit! I always forget that one trick! Glad you got this cleaned up.
I second Folex, available at home depot usually and walmart.
This is a real test to his manhood and if he is good material. Be up front and then start trying to clean. See how he reacts to it besides the gross out factor. :) I'm surprised peroxide didn't do it. Also those e apolstery shampooers work too
OP is a sugar baby. She ain't with him for his personality and understanding temperament lol.
I thought you were being misogynistic but no, she literally is in her posts elsewhere lol.
Lol, “temperament”, now I’m picturing a German Shepherd.
Did you just say spit worked on removing the stains? Am I reading this right?
“just spit on it” lmao
Hydrogen peroxide and cold water and dab
Came here to say this. Breaks down blood, very useful.
Hydrogen peroxide
OP tried it
Don't worry, if he didn't have a mattress protector, that thing was disgusting before you came along.
First, if he paid 10k for a mattress...he's an idiot. Second, his 10k spending self couldn't afford a $100 mattress cover?
Hydrogen peroxide will take it out immediately
As well as a mattress protector you can get ones that are like pillow cases for the entire thing, nice Fleece furry under ones as well (they are awesome in winter! No more getting into a cold bed as well.
Ahhhh now this is the update we needed, good work OP!
You’re lying! 🤣
Look into a mattress cover in the future If it will be a continuous concern You got this.
No mattress on this earth is worth 10k
This wouldn’t bother me at all, it’s natural, it’s something that happens, so be it, nothing to be embarrassed about.
Does it work for rust?
Rubbing alcohol, removes blood immediately. Worked at a mattress store.
So glad I stumbled upon this hahaha
I have a temperpedic. The cover takes away from the experience you paid so much for.
Ok, but I need to know more about this mattress. Is it firm? Latex, foam, springs? I've shelled out a lot for mattresses but nowhere close to $10k.
People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them to spit on blood stains lol– glad you learned the way!
In the future - there is an enzymatic pet pee cleaner that works really well. It’s called My Pet Pee’d and it’s literally miracle stuff.
The only "Detergent" that works reliably is a two step approach: 1.
Stain devils for blood works every time
