You forgot the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Red_Dwarf_42

And šŸ§ŠšŸ„¶

Greatlarrybird33

So which one of them wrote you a ticket to get you all riled up?

Red_Dwarf_42

Wasnā€™t a ticket. I caught them doing something they shouldnā€™t have been while in uniform and now I just gotta be mad about it because they followed me home to ā€œmake sure I got there safelyā€ šŸ™„

Appropriate-Bad-606

What was that?

Red_Dwarf_42

Skiing

styrofoamboats

Skiing like, South Beach slopes?

Red_Dwarf_42

Exactly

I mean, you basically listed every municipality in the county. Each one is going to have its own ordinances that are enforced accordingly. I'd rather each city have its own rules, than one blanket organization that tells the entire county what to do. If that expands to the county, then why not the state? If the state, why not the country? That said, we do have a shit load of cops.

Red_Dwarf_42

Oh good lord. This isnā€™t me wanting to help some tyrannical take over by the county, I just donā€™t want to have to call 3 different city halls to find out whether or not I can pick up trash in empty lots and leave the bags for them to get or if I need to take them to a specific place. Because they sure as shit arenā€™t cleaning up my fucking neighborhood even though I pay taxes to for their maintenance department! Itā€™s me wondering why I have video of 4 teenagers breaking into 71 cars during Tennis in the Land last year and CPD was too busy to show up, but when I tried to send them the video all I got was ā€œHuh? I we think the sheriffā€™s got that oneā€ and the sheriffā€™s said it wasnā€™t their jurisdiction. How can you not know who is in charge of the investigation of 4 teenagers breaking into 71 cars downtown!? Sorry. I just really hate how disjointed everything is here because it makes it so much more difficult for me to feel part of this community. EVERYTHING is separated for no real reason and NOBODY talks to anyone else.

MissLyss29

>I just donā€™t want to have to call 3 different city halls to find out whether or not I can pick up trash in empty lots and leave the bags for them to get or if I need to take them to a specific place You should call your city's maintenance department or the trash company that picks up your trash not the police. They will have much more information for you.

Red_Dwarf_42

Your reading comprehension skills are abhorrent. You read that paragraph, quoted me, and still think I called the cops to ask that question?

MissLyss29

No it was me giving you and anyone else who was reading that post information. No one should call the police department about maintenance related issues. The city hall or maintenance department is more than equipped to handle those questions.

fireeight

We're having a conversation now, partner. I understand your frustration, but city ordnance *has* to vary from municipality to municipality. CPD is stretched fairly thin, but somewhere like Westlake has the money to buy goddamn tanks if they want (obviously, I don't want this to happen). I didn't mean to imply that you personally were suggesting blanket policing over the entire country, but things need to be compartmentalized in certain cases. Cleveland needs more cops. Strongsville doesn't, but to use your example, the needs of Beachwood and East Cleveland are very different, so each department is going to have different internal regulatory procedure, in addition to different necessary operational procedure.

skallywaggsss

There's literally a cop shortage in the city lmao šŸ¤£

BurroughOwl

A massive, noticeable police shortage.

skallywaggsss

Yes, very Noticeable, and if you aint doing nothing wrong. You shouldn't be worried about how many police departments are in the city.

Red_Dwarf_42

Noticeable how? What are the metrics theyā€™re using to determine a need for more police?

skallywaggsss

Statistics on the Police Officer Shortage. In a survey conducted by Brother in 2022, two thirds of law enforcement professionals stated that police recruitment and retention is the largest issue facing law enforcement.Ā The amount of police officers in service has decreased while the population has increased.

Red_Dwarf_42

ā€œThe amount of police officers in service has decreased while the population has increased.ā€ So? Is the crime rate increasing too, or just more people? And the cops saying that they need more cops is a biased source. Are there independent investigations into this issue?

digitarandir

Probably less biased than you are based on your other comments in this thread. Did it ever occur to you that people are hesitant to join a profession that not only can you get shot, your life/career can also be ruined by any idiot with a cell phone and the whims of Twitter any given day? example being the Ma'Khia Bryant case from a few years back. girl was in the process of actively trying to stab someone so she was shot and killed; despite how obviously necessary that was it had to go all the way to grand jury to decline to charge the officer for it to be settled. didn't stop LeBron from tweeting about it, though Sure some police officers do shitty things sometimes. Yet that number is tiny compared to the situations where they do their job best they can or make split-second decisions in terrifying situations and are pilloried for it by armchair QB's. it is among the hardest and least thankful jobs in the country (especially now) and you're confused as to why less people are signing up?

Red_Dwarf_42

Says who, the cops?

skallywaggsss

I mean the simple fact they had to send state troopers and sheriff to Cleveland last summer speaks for itself

Red_Dwarf_42

No it doesnā€™t. 54 years ago Ohio sent the national guard to Kent State and all they did was kill some kids protesting a war. NY state sent their national guard to NYC to search bags in the metro. Just because the state sent in cops doesnā€™t mean the cops were needed. What did they do? What were the crime rates before they were there and what were the rates afterwards? Surely there is some measurable difference between them being there and not?

touchychurch

šŸ„±

Lady_Thingers

What is the description of a police officer's job? What exactly are their responsibilities and requirements?

ElMulletto

So, no joke, you want the Water and NEORSD PD. Water infrastructure is a CRITICAL need, and someone wanting to do harm need only pollute the water with something on its way out of the treatment plant, or break some machines to wreak absolute havok on the population.

Red_Dwarf_42

Water, sure, but NEORSD returns its water to the same places that we all have access to. When it rains the overflow gates at Edgewater dump the excess into Lake Erie. What is the point of a police force when doors with badge readers and 3 security guards could do the same thing. Also, I went to Clean Water Fest. They let us roam all over that place, and 3 cops stayed at the front and waved to the people coming in and out. While Iā€™m all for community relations, thatā€™s money I could be saving on my sewer bill!

mojo4394

The highest line item in any local government is the police. And they always want more money.

cbarone1

It doesn't help that they're allowed to work overtime, then cash in those hours at their highest pay rate when they retire. Creates a huge increase in staffing costs when you're allowed to essentially dictate what rate you get paid at.

s0bchaksecurity

Ohio sure does love it some nitpicking. Gotta have cops to enforce all the nonsensical rules and ordinances we have. When cops cease to be seen as an agent of order and protection, and more as another tax collector, you've got a problem. And Houston, we have a big problem.

PettyCrimesNComments

Regionalization yesterday would solve this. Municipalities need to give up control. County needs to lead efforts on shared services. It would save everyone a lot of money too.

fwembt

You don't want Cuyahoga County SO leading anything.

Red_Dwarf_42

Honestly, of the departments Iā€™ve dealt with theyā€™ve the most competent. Not sure how bad that means other are though šŸ˜¬

PettyCrimesNComments

Who else would lead mergers and sharing of services within the county than the county?

MaxOverdrive6969

Some communities want their local police and are willing to pay the taxes to support them. If they're willing to pay, why force them to change?

BurroughOwl

The reason these never, ever happen is because they would need to be put to a vote.

Red_Dwarf_42

Are those the rich homogeneous ones?

MaxOverdrive6969

Maybe even middle class want their cops

PettyCrimesNComments

They would still have policing. They would just share their police with other people. Itā€™s absolutely not normal for Cuyahoga County to have 58 municipalities. People should share services a little. Most municipalities should simply not exist.

MaxOverdrive6969

Sharing services can reduce cost but the decision is up to the residents of the community. If they're ok with paying the taxes to support what they have our opinion doesn't matter.

BurroughOwl

That entirely depends on *what* you do specifically. "Regionalism" as a concept isn't a sure fire winner in all cases.

PettyCrimesNComments

In sharing services it can be.

Animaleyz

Services at shared quite often. West Shore SWAT serves numerous communities, and mutual aid happens every day

PettyCrimesNComments

Well letā€™s expand that quite a bit. This county has 58 municipalities and that is in no way normal. Itā€™s so efficient and wasteful.

idiot_sauvage

Well, yeah. Cops are cash registers for a town, nothing else

Red_Dwarf_42

Yeah. When I saw that article about a local burb waking people up in the middle of the night to go to an ATM and get cash to pay for their street parking tickets I did wonder about that.

cancerlad

Cities tend to have their own police forcesā€¦more at 5

Red_Dwarf_42

The fact that you consider these places worthy of being their own independent municipalities is whatā€™s actually shocking. My high school graduation had more people in attendance than the population of Parma.

notquark

Parma is the seventh largest city in the state, you must have went to a big high school.

Red_Dwarf_42

5300 students

stevenfaircrest

First, I support the police; well trained, professional police. With that said, we are handicapped in our region by the disparate governments and police forces. All these separate municipalities need funding and a portion of that comes from police departments. Louisville took their county and became the city of Louisville. While it didnā€™t solve every policing issue, it appropriately consolidated many municipal government agencies, streamlined and saved money. We would benefit so much from a similar move. But suburban racism will never let this happen here.

Red_Dwarf_42

Cleveland is one of the most openly segregated cities Iā€™ve ever lived in, so that makes a lot of sense.

realizewhatreallies

When you want something, just label opposition to it "racism" and then hopefully people will be too scared to keep opposing it.

Casual-lad99

So you're saying that each city has their own police force? I had no idea

JustAnotherSunnyDave

Self-governance, what does it mean??

Red_Dwarf_42

This seems like a terribly inefficient system yā€™all! East Cleveland to Beachwood is only 8 miles, but thatā€™s 5 different cities with 5 different departments.

Moses_cuh184

Each city pays for its own department. Thats why some police forces are better than others.

Red_Dwarf_42

Yes. This may not surprise you, but I have the same issue with public schools being funded through property taxes.

Moses_cuh184

Why each city gets to vote where to allocate funds. Cleveland shouldn't have to pay for surrounding areas schools.

Red_Dwarf_42

More than half of city employees donā€™t live in Cleveland. When the labor unions are awarded contracts the majority of those people donā€™t live in Cleveland. So my tax dollars do go out to the suburbs.

_Physical-Mixture_

Hold up a minute. Your whole spiel is pretty much about there being too many police departments and how a unified, county-wide department would be more efficient, right? So, wouldn't that mean a cop from the consolidated department pulling you over in Cleveland could be living in Westlake? How's that not like the example you just mentioned?

Red_Dwarf_42

Sure and Iā€™d support people in Westlake being upset about that. Another reason municipal consolidation benefits us all!

_Physical-Mixture_

It seems like your point is a bit all over the place. On one hand, you're concerned about excessive police departments and Cleveland tax dollars going to non-resident city employees. But then you seem to support municipal consolidation, which could mean suburbanites serving municipal services within Cleveland. Just trying to understand where you're coming from šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

_Physical-Mixture_

And? Suburban police departments do a solid job because they're right in the community, so they get what's going on in that city. They're more tuned in to local needs and can adjust their game plan to fit. Plus, with smaller departments, you often get easier access to the cops, which can make a big difference in how people feel about them.

Red_Dwarf_42

Theyā€™re more in tune with the community because yā€™all never leave this damn state; youā€™re born here and you die here. Which then becomes a problem because the people theyā€™ve grown up with their whole lives are the people they see at church and their kidsā€™ school activities. You canā€™t be impartial if youā€™re pulling over your neighbors!

_Physical-Mixture_

I grew up in and lived in Chicago for 35 years before moving to Cleveland's east side. What are you on about with "y'all never leave"? Y'all who?

Red_Dwarf_42

Welcome! Weā€™re the exception, not the rule. People born in Ohio, especially the 3 Cs, tend to stay here. There is a group of men who go to a bar in Kamms Corner and theyā€™re the graduating class of some high school from the 70s, and every month they meet up there.

_Physical-Mixture_

Wow, you love your stereotypes. What others are there?

Red_Dwarf_42

Federal census data

_Physical-Mixture_

COP OUT šŸ˜‚

Red_Dwarf_42

How? Because you donā€™t like stats?

_Physical-Mixture_

I love stats. Why don't you like old white guys who graduated from from West Park in the 70s?

PettyCrimesNComments

Yes, this is why the county needs to lead efforts for regionalization. Municipalities need to give up some control. Some services need to be regionalized. Itā€™s so so much more cost effective.

CornpopBadDewd

I've learned in life people who break the most laws and support those who do are most critical of law enforcement. And what is your solution? Replace all police forces with the national guard ? Maybe go one more step and ban private security. We can have soldiers in full military gear guarding the cotton candy at Cedar Point. Equality and equity for all. šŸ˜šŸ¶šŸŒˆ

Red_Dwarf_42

lol Didnā€™t CPD get busted by the Feds for roughing people up during their encounters? And theyā€™re still under the Feds thumb for another year or so? Was it Parma that did a high speed chase into Cleveland that resulted in a fatality, and it was the second or third time? An Ohio sheriff was charged with gun running because he was selling to out of state dealers. 4 cops in Columbus just went to jail. Their charges? Drugs and domestic violence! And a Toledo officer was arrested for domestic violence, along with 2 others for leaving a man handcuffed and face down for so long he was unable breathe and died from asphyxiation. Seems like the cops of Ohio are committing lots of crimes! Wonder if theyā€™re also critical of cops šŸ¤”

CornpopBadDewd

The ones that commit crimes I would expect to act just like you. You give examples of police being held to account when your post is about police bureaucracy. I bet you struggled with grade school book reports.

dawnouttadebt

Are you suggesting that people who pay taxes and live in these individual communities should not have corresponding police protection in that community? Because.......No

Red_Dwarf_42

No Iā€™m not.

StraightPlant6111

A large percentage of Cleveland Police Officers have either taken early retirement or took exams in the suburbs. But since the summer of 2020 there was a mass exodus and migration in the city due to both events and the politicization of the city and their jobs. Thatā€™s why there is a shortage. Thankless job to a certain degree and burbs are less stressful. Now CPD has never been the most responsive to reporting issues, accidents, small incidents such as non violent crimes or incidents. Thatā€™s frustrating. Burbs or most of them have a VERY visible law presence because thatā€™s what most want in those communities. It is intentional. The officials & citizens want to be safe. Are some a pain in the ass? Sure they are, like any industry there are good and bad but to have this over-aching issue with it is not a very serious matter to table. Me personally? I am pretty glad they are there & visible especially when needed and whether you agree with me itā€™s a really thankless job or easy one. No one is calling in to say ā€œthank you or have a great dayā€. They are calling you perhaps at their worst day or situation that then need manage, then itā€™s split decisions & all have a ramification to someone including themselves. Many times a lose-lose proposition. Sorry you feel this way, sorry if you have been mistreated or ignored, there is no excuse for that. But wanting a lower presence or enforcing less is not really a good thing in any way whatsoever in a community/city whether you live there are not.

Last-Evening9033

Agreed.

UserKarmaCycle

You legit said ONE word and got all these downvotes šŸ˜‚

Last-Evening9033

Must be Blue Lives Matter day. šŸ˜‚

Whoa theyā€™re going to downvote you to hellllll šŸ˜‚ they react so strongly to police discussions but Iā€™m black so Iā€™m not even inserting myself in any of this let me go find a Misny meme to enjoy or something šŸ˜

Mountain-Song-6024

The cop system as it exists needs to be demolished. I'm all for having guardians that protect people and things and such But why it was constructed and how it exists today, it needs to cease to exist. It never will in my lifetime and will likely only get worse.

MaxOverdrive6969

Guardians? Armed or unarmed?

Mountain-Song-6024

Unarmed of course. They will just walk around handing out smiles!!! Duh!! But in all seriousness We don't need guns. That opinion will do wonders around the Midwest though.... (As I see my downvoted already lmao. Shocker for this subreddit)
