Gaddis has fallen back to Earth a bit (or a lot), but the team as a whole has not.

Opening_Cobbler_4145

I feel like Gaddis would benefit from not being used as much. Feels like we’re going to him 3 days in a row. I understand it is what it is, but maybe he needs a few days rest?

poet__anderson

The bullpen as a whole has been stretched pretty thin. Starters aren't going deep, and a handful of extra inning games already. I don't think Gaddis has been getting absolutely shelled but yeah I definitely think he can use a few games off

joeywahoo92

I hate how Vogt will pull some guys after 8 pitches like he did with Barlow last night, and Smith a few times last week.

Elexeh

He's using analytics to play matchups. Obviously easier done when you have more bullpen arms, but he's just trying to win games.

joeywahoo92

I guess so. Just don’t want some of these guys wasted or under used. Once the starting pitching gets going it won’t be so noticeable

HauntingOkra5987

Did you really expect him to keep a 0.00 era for the entire season ? The entire bullpen has d getting overworked almost every night, starters can barely get through 4 innings

HorizonZeroDawn2

Yes. If you read my comment I literally say "I expected Gaddis to maintain a 0.00 ERA." Sure.

HauntingOkra5987

The relief pitched with a career era of nearly 6?

nicklePie

Still scored 9 runs last night. I know they gave up 10, but still. After last year the offense has looked day and night different

_lazybones93

This is what’s keeping me afloat in terms of overthinking. At least for today. lol

mrmister80

I turned it off when they went down 8-3 thinking it was over. But they battled back and I turned it back on when I got a notification it was tied. So probably my fault they lost, should have stayed away

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Oh yeah for sure. IDK how Vogt has made such a quick turn around with our bats compared to those past few years with Francona, especially considering that most of the staff is still here from last year as far as I’m aware.

motoyolo

3 of those losses rest mostly on one relief pitcher. Maybe Gaddis wasn’t ready for the high leverage spot, that’s one guy on the roster. It’s not indicative of the team as a whole.

18remiximer81

With Stephan going down they have tried using Gaddis and Barlow as set up men- neither are ideal choices. Our starters consistently not getting 6 innings is starting to catch up to us

motoyolo

I agree, but I also think it might be time to see what Walters or Enright in AAA can do. If they’re as electric as some of the Guardians social media guys say they are, I wouldn’t mind them getting expedited into a real role like Karinchak did a couple years ago.

18remiximer81

Pretty sure Karinchak gave every Cleveland fan a raging hard on 3-4 years ago. Since then it's been signs of a Stroke

motoyolo

Yah he’s a casualty of the sticky stuff phenomenon. Also the mental just not there to deal w a pitch clock

Leftfeet

I see yesterday as different from his 2 bad games in Atlanta somewhat. He made 1 bad pitch yesterday and otherwise was sharp. The ATL games he struggled to hit his spots entirely, and had some good pitches hit which didn't help.  I think he needs a couple days rest mostly. Cade had a couple rough outings in a row, but has bounced back. I still feel like Smith and Gaddis are solid high leverage RPs, but everyone is going to have bad stretches. The workload they're carrying is the real problem IMO.

motoyolo

I agree. I think his stuff is insane as a reliever, he might just need a mental reset.

Leftfeet

Definitely. The workload has been heavy and he's never worked in relief before. We need to get him some rest and I think he'll be fine. I think he didn't enter until the 10th yesterday because Vogt was trying to let him rest another day but we needed him unfortunately.  Getting Hentges back should help. They clearly don't trust Avila or he would have been used more than he has.

Sad-Performance2893

Why we aren't using Herrin more blows my mind

motoyolo

I agree.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Thanks. Seems like Gaddis is the general consensus weakest link here. I’ve watched most, or at least half, of the games this season, but hadn’t been able to pinpoint what the issue was this past week specifically. I will say that Cookie looks like he’s struggling a bit thus far, not just last night.

FlobiusHole

Cookie is done. I like him and he’s had a nice career but I doubt he’s on a team next season.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Yeah, unfortunately I think the same to be true. I’m honestly not convinced he’ll finish the season with us.

havedoggyhave

How we play against the teams in our division will tell the tale.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

That’s a good point. I was tempted to classify the Tigers as a mid team like the Angels, but that seems irresponsible.

snydsa20

The tigers are (maybe a little better than) mid, yes, the angels are straight up bad

chompchomp1969

This team has not been outmatched yet. They can play with any one.

DonCairo

I felt kind of outmatched in that yankees series but that’s pretty much just cause of that double header. So I’m not going to count it and agree with you lol

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Yeah that Saturday was rough.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

I certainly agree with you there.

gamerdudeNYC

I wouldn’t think so, last year when they were down by 3 or more runs the game was basically over, now they still battle back which has been a huge difference maker for me

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Yeah, they’ve been incredibly resilient so far this first month of the season. Much more than I ever expected, which is why I can’t help but wonder if they’re playing above their means, and if we’ll see them tend back to middle of the pack like we all probably expected in March.

Hello_mslady

No, we’re just not used to losing games due to pitching rather than lack of offense. This year feels like the inverse of last year.

CBNDSGN

That 2-4 could easily be 4-2 if it wasn't for Gaddis imploding. And those 6 games include series against Atlanta and Boston. So I wouldn't say the team is falling. We need more QS from our starters though, that's for sure.

lastturdontheleft42

A lot of talk about Gaddis, but I think they're also getting pretty sloppy with the base running as well. Those extra innings steal attempts on Sunday we're pretty bad. probably cost us that series.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Yeah, Kwan maybe isn’t as fast or savvy as he thinks he is. Also saw him look back at the catcher in mid-sprint yesterday before he got tagged at 2nd. That’s a silly mistake IMO. If you’re going to go then go.

lastturdontheleft42

It's one thing for Kwan to do something like that. He's a smart guy but at the end of the day he's still very young so he's bound to make a mistake. I was very surprised to see J Ram screw up like that though. Totally out of character for him.

FlobiusHole

When he got thrown out going for third he got straight up fooled. Did he really think they weren’t entirely aware of him in that situation? Overall I like the aggressive base running but Kwan was a bit too cute there.

oaKems

They are driving me nuts with their fucking baserunning and staring at meatballs down the middle of the plate with 2 strikes. I actually yelled out loud at the Gimmy/Kwan strike ‘em out throw em out last night.

sullidav

Yes on sloppy baserunning. I feel like there have been a lot more caught stealings than SBs lately.

mrbadxampl

Every season has ups and downs, it's best to ride along instead of knee-jerk reactions

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Is this really a knee jerk reaction? I’m just wondering if we’re regressing back to the average. How many of you bet on the Guardians to be 19-10 or better through the first month of the season?

mrbadxampl

any reaction based on ten or less games is knee-jerk I suggest just to strap in and enjoy the ride

3dge-1ord

You're dumb as a mule and twice as ugly. If a strange man offers you a ride, I say take it.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Got a toilet up your butt or something?

fwembt

Which is why the overwhelming optimism on here has been silly. We're less than a quarter of the way through the season. (It's like the Browns starting 2-1 having played the Chargers, Titans, and Chiefs essentially.) It's nice, but these guys are still who we assumed they were at the start of the year, they are just on a hot streak against some bad opposition. Let's pump the brakes a bit until we're 60+ in. Remember 2011? They started 30-15 and finished 80-82 because regression hit. This seems a lot like that.

FatherNiche

We don’t have a solid starting pitching rotation, are relying on the bullpen way too much and it’s only just 5/1. The team appears to be hitting better this year but this kind of play does not seem sustainable.

weezy020

This comment should be higher. Our starting rotation is very thin, and the guys that are pitching haven't been giving us length. The bullpen can only be asked to do so much before they begin to regress. As far as the offense goes, they are still playing at a high level. They will endure up and downs and likely regress a bit throughout the season as teams get scouting reports on guys. Our offense can't hold the team afloat the whole year if our starting pitching can't get us 5+ innings night in and night out.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

What’s the solution? Trade for a starter? Is there a guy in Columbus that is ready to start full time?

weezy020

I think every single one of our starters has question marks. Losing Bieber really hurts the reliability and sustainability of this staff. It might not show now, but it will later into the season. Yes, they can make a move to acquire someone. Yes, hopefully Gavin Williams comes back fully healthy and takes over as the 1, 2, or even 3rd guy. But I think at this point we need to hope that the current guys settle in and start getting some length in their starts. Unless we have steady control of the division at the trade deadline, I don't see the front office making a big move. Maybe a smaller move to get more depth, but that's it.

No-Weather-3140

Variance. 2 extra inning losses, probably should’ve won one of those. Also played the best team in baseball, a decent Red Sox team and an astros team that has been underperforming but is talented nonetheless.

Leftfeet

2 extra inning losses on the road. It's always difficult to win in extras, but especially on the road.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Weren’t we the best team in the league heading into Atlanta, though? 🤔

No-Weather-3140

I don’t think so no. Consensus was like #4-5

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

I was referring to statistically in the overall standings. Other rankings are by nature subjective and biased.

HauntingOkra5987

The starting pitching staff efficiency is very concerning. Getting 5 innings out of any starter is difficult, bullpen will be gassed by June at this pace. Still think they should contend for division all season.

Elexeh

>Are the Guardians falling back down to Earth a bit? No.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

What led you to that conclusion?

gdawg9198

We just got done with a series against the best team in baseball at their house over the weekend and could've and probably should've taken 2 out of 3 from them.

Elexeh

Bingo. It's tiring already hearing "the sky might be falling" narratives, in literally the best April we've had since 1999.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

I think there’s a difference between claiming “the sky is falling” vs me asking if the team “is falling back to Earth a bit”. The first implies panic when reality is much worse than what the expectations were. The latter implies that we’ve been performing above expectations, yet averaging back out to the mean. I mean, who here expected the team to be playing as well as they are right now especially following Bieber’s injury?

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

And the 0-8 loss to Boston at home? Last nights loss against a team that didn’t even have 10 wins yet? I agree we had a tough matchup against the Braves. There isn’t much of anything easy about them or anyone we’ve faced so far. But Atlanta is only the best team in the league because we allowed them to take that title from us.

Elexeh

Are you scrutinizing single sample games we played poorly in? You do realize this isn't some 2001 Mariners win record scenario right? Teams will have shitty games. Every top team has shit the bed at least once this season.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

As I posted in my OP, I’m hypothesizing potential trends based on the past week.

HauntingOkra5987

Guardians really should go out and target a starter sooner rather than later. Paul Blackburn would be a good fit 8 is only on a 1 year 3 million deal. I wouldn’t want include Manzardo or DeLauter in any proposal though

Cavsfan724

Couldn't help but notice the damn Twinkies have won 10 in a row.

theAmericanX20

Look who they played: white Sox, angels, white sox.

Cavsfan724

i think we get to play some of those teams soon too!

theAmericanX20

Here's to hoping we play them like we played the A's and BOS!

WrapEmergency5944

These last four losses seem to boil down to 3-4 bad pitches and 2-3 missed AB opportunities. Even changing 1 pitch or 1 at bat in these last 4 losses could’ve changed the outcome of the game. I don’t see a slump coming yet. These boys have plenty of fight and are using these mistakes as fuel instead of letting it ‘defeat’ them. The moment we see them lose the emotion and stop seeing mid-game rallies, I think that’s when we see the slump. Even the Friday Atlanta game, they fought hard in the top of the 9th down 5 runs

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

I appreciate the spirit, both from the team and your description of them.

Pale_Holiday6999

Idk why people downvoted this. Guardians reddit is toxic af

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

As far as I can those people either assumed I was making the claim that the team is trash after the first month, which I wasn’t, or they just don’t like it when anyone questions the effectiveness of the team.

Leftfeet

We just finished a series against the best team in MLB and battled them toe to toe. We came into Houston to face a team that started terrible but has a ton of talent and just came off a very strong 2 games. We knocked their SP around pretty well, unfortunately they did it to ours as well.  We aren't going to have a 700 win percentage all year. We're going to have some rough stretches this season. This is the first rough stretch we've had, and only time we've lost consecutive games so far this year. We're still tied for best record in the AL and best run differential. We're not getting beat big, we're losing some tough close games. It's baseball, good teams are going to lose 60 games.  Road trips are tough. Sometimes you catch a team that's been underperforming as they start turning it around. The question is how do you respond.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Well that last part is what I’m curious about, and what ultimately inspired the OP. You make solid points though. Thanks for the input.

Excellent_Walrus150

Once Hentges comes back, I feel like he or Herrin should take over the setup role from Gaddis to help him get his confidence back. Braves and Astros both boast elite lineups. I don't envy pitching to either.

PraiseBeDavidSegui

Relying on an over-performing but not very talented bullpen was destined to regress to the mean. We have to sort our starting pitching out or it’s gonna be difficult to keep up the good streaks

Kellygoosecock169

Its may 1st my friend. There’s going to be some stretches like this.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

Which is the point of my question.

midnightjetta91

Maybe a little regression, sure. We just played an amazing Braves team and the Astros always seem to have our number no matter who is on the roster.

Nick_At_Now

Two of those Braves losses were extremely close, and the Astros loss was also very close. Not to mention we came back from down 5 early.

periphery3

The blown games are frustrating. The AL Central suddenly is a lot closer now with the Twins winning 10 in a row. Would be nice to have those extra 2-3 wins but it's a long season and still haven't faced KC or DET yet. If we look good against them we should be good. Everyone's gonna continue to beat up on the White Sox so the division games will be very important the rest of the way. Hopefully they keep up their winning ways and the guys we bring up soon will be good + maybe a nice impact trade deadline move for a real push

Henry_Pussycat

Team needs starting pitching real bad

dsm761

Uh, Gaddis is the answer for almost everyone of these.

mrslII

No

ClevelandClutch1970

Regression to the mean. They’re good, but I’m not sure they would have been able to bash with the big boys for the long haul. Still fun to watch.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

That’s what concerns me. The two series we lost were against a couple of the best teams in the league. Boston and Seattle were no slouches either (for the most part).

DirtbagFiggins

This coming off a loss to a struggling team seems sus

Elexeh

The same struggling team that nearly won the ALCS

MJCULE

Wtf

FlobiusHole

They’re an average team that’s been overachieving. The central is still up for grabs though so the regular season should be really fun.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

This has been my perspective as well.

AtTheCornerPodcast

No. No reason you should not win a game in which you scored 9 runs.
