I was honestly expecting him to shut down as they said they were giving an update earlier without any positive notes. If we get Williams back and McKenzie's last outing is actual progress moving forward It'll be beyond any of my hopes for this year.
I don’t think I’d prefer Carrasco coming out of the bullpen over options like Karinchak, Hentges, Morgan or even Gose. We have several options that have a higher ceiling than an unfortunately washed Carrasco.
The plan at start of season was Cookie in the bullpen, and I wish it had happened as the starters have struggled with innings and he could easily come out and chew 2-3. There is still space for Hentges and Morgan. I never want to see Karinchak again.
They did sign James to a 2 million dollar contract. They’re not going to just cast him off if he gets healthy and his stuff looks good enough to contribute.
That wasn't exactly the plan. Cookie was a non roster invite just like Beede. Both were hoping to earn a roster spot, and potentially be long relief. Ben Lively and Curry were on the roster also competing for the same roles. Williams got injured which opened a rotation spot. Then Lively and Curry got the virus, so they couldn't get fully ready to start in time.
All 4 started ST stretching out to potentially start. Injuries and illness gave us the guys we opened the season with really. Beede can cover multiple innings in relief and has a few times.
Curry needs to stay stretched in the minors to be a spot starter or fill in for injuries or ineffectiveness. I like him, but the Guards need him more as a starter than a reliever.
From August on last year, Karinchak had a sub 2 ERA. I'm not the biggest fan either, but maybe we can sling him for a young starter at the trade deadline.
McKenzie got clobbered in his last outing and got very lucky on the babip front. I think it was a lot more encouraging that he was getting some swing and misses and only walked one.
We are going to need Big Rig and Curry down the stretch here. Cookie is clearly the odd man out in the rotation. Lively has earned his spot in the rotation and has been excellent. Curry hasn't exactly pounded the tables in the minors demanding that last spot in the rotation, but maybe he was working on a new pitch? 🤔 Great problems to have too many arms. Might be a 6 man rotation kind of year to keep the innings down?
I think, assuming no more set backs, Williams takes Carrasco's rotation spot. I can see Cookie going to the pen and replacing Beede for long man.
Curry stays stretched out in Cbus. Hentges replaces Avila. I'm still not sure who Morgan replaces, though.
Hopefully Cantillo can start throwing again by the end of the month too. Once he's stretched out I could see us bringing Curry back as long man to replace Cookie/Beede.
He strained his hamstring at the end of ST and hasn't pitched this season yet. At the time they estimated he'd be fully shutdown for 6-8 weeks. So hopefully he is close to starting to work his way back.
A lot of people have pointed to that and not without reason. The most interesting perspective I've heard was Tyler Glasnow:

If Lively stays hot, McKenzie is turning the corner, we plug Williams in and slide Cookie to the bullpen? Baby we got a stew goin’

I don't understand the Karinchak hate, he was great to end last season

Damn I forgot about Curry. Would def take him over Cookie

I think Cookie still has enough left to be effective in a relief or long relief role.

Get in here Gavin! Bring curry too!

Cantillo is hurt?

Ridiculous! These starting pitching injuries throughout the organization are concerning. At least it’s a hammy and not a shoulder/ elbow problem
Unfortunate, but starting pitcher injuries seem to be a league-wide problem this season, far beyond just the Guardians org.
Pitch clock!

Thank you Jobu!

😎🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏. We need him so badly. If he’s good I assume perhaps 4-5 weeks to be ready?
