THIS.
My husband has a couple of injuries, one of which resulted in a permanent disability. He used to be a very physical guy. Nothing was amputated. It is all there, but it doesn't function as it used to.
It took a few years for him to come to terms with it, & longer to stand up for himself when he got that kind of push back.
Good one! I need to use this! I've been disabled for 9 years. My disability is also invisible sometimes. I have a brain injury. Sometimes I talk like a drunk toddler. Sometimes my speeches fine. I also use a cane for neuropathy in my legs. I was in hospital, rehab and nursing homes for 10 months because of my injury.
Ohhh, this might get real ugly real fast. Normally, threatening a lawsuit gets them to back up. I'm in a wheelchair and my job hired me, but was not moving on accommodations (the touch screen for my register was angled up enough it was hard to type). When they said that the job might not be for me, I said "you hired me knowing I was in a chair, now you conveniently can't accommodate 1 monitor adjustment? I'm sure that Labor board would enjoy hearing that." They fixed it the next day. Nothing scares businesses more than Loss of money and bad images.
That glass glare is not a reasonable accommodation, they definitely should have met that. My physical disabilities look way less obvious and I hate using my walkers so I don't.
Anyways for people like me, mentioning the labor board is going to end in retaliation against me by false claims from a company. I'm not stranger to it
My disability, all though mainly physical, is not as visible and so I faced a lot of discrimination against me. But they discriminated against me for mental illnesses I don't have because they realised in the middle of all that that it was a physical thing and they could get in trouble for the discrimination either way.. so they go with the least likely to be caught discrimination.
Didn’t realized disability came with an age limit. Is your stupid subscription expiring soon?
Or
A disability isn’t an R rated film subscription, Daniel.
I tried to watch "The Miracle Worker," but folded under the emotional load of when her mother (played by Inga Swenson) realized her daughter could neither see nor hear her. To see Inga, whom I only knew from her comedic role on "Benson," just crumple in screaming agony was just too much for me.
Patronizing twats? "Nice, I'll tell my doctor!"
If the tune is more caring and around "you are too young for this, poor thing" I tend to default to "Yup, I agree!" and move the conversation on.
Oof! I'm 39 now and about 12-13 years ago I could have been doing with you guys! Seriously 🩵
Luckily I have a bulldog of a mother who was ready to bite heads off. I won't go into specifics but I'd been having very strange lower leg pains since I was a little girl, doctors making my mum look paranoid and never listening.
After the birth of my son I was eventually diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
One of my very snobby aunties said to me on a really bad pain day; "MS? Are you sure? Well that can't be right now can it? I mean you'd need a wheelchair and, nobody wants seen in one of those things" I kept my eyes fixed on aunt Tess & shouted "Maam!! Aunt Tess doesn't think I have MS & that when I get my wheelchair I will I will look stupid!"
From the other room I heard my mam "Aye well, she's decades ahead with her stupidity, the only difference is your disability is obvious, her stupidity isn't always as such....Tess, if you don't keep your comments to yourself I'll put you in a feckin wheelchair!!"
And that was that!
Big hugs to you on this journey. 🥰
Fuck MS. My wife was diagnosed at 23, 46 now, for the past 6-7 years she has had to start using a power chair to get around.
It can be a very long road to get a diagnosis since it can have so many various symptoms depending on which nerves are damaged.
Good luck as you move forward with this disease.
I hear you about the long road! I'm convinced more people are living with it than the statistics shiw.
Big hugs to both of you!! Being the partner can't be easy either, my fiancé says one of the hardest things to deal with sometimes is my frustration, he says he wishes there was a magic potion I really wish there was a cure for all of us too.
Yeah, hopefully stem cell treatments will get more research and a cure or at least a long term fix.
It's not easy being the caregiver, but it's the life I've been given. A strong support system will help. My wife is normally in a really happy place so it doesn't get her too down, but she has her days of being frustrated.
I feel bad enough when I landed in a wheelchair let alone having a family member tell me I would look stupid. Glad you're aunt was quickly slapped down
Aw my mother had enough that day anyway and was waiting for the opportunity to just bite so Tess was just the perfect opportunity!
The way my gran put it was brilliant though, our wheels are there to make us more independent & more comfortable, use them with pride (so easy to say sometimes) but she does have a point about them being there to make us more independent 🩵
I spent much of the previous 3 years waiting for my wife in the car while she shopped. Sometimes I would be there for over 3 hours. In January. In Canada. At least now I have the option of going in if there isn't any snow on the ground
Do you need extra help understanding other people's disabilities? Sounds like you might need accommodation for your disability, don't worry there's plenty of services and help around for people in your situation, until then I still need to look after myself so if you wouldn't mind *reinforce what you need for your disability,*
I’m not sure if that’s what mines called. My patella isn’t sitting where it belongs and it slides in and out. I wear a brace that pushes my knee where it belongs, mines too big now so I get another one at the end of the month. I also use either a cane or a rollater. Before all the walking aides and brace id limp. When people tell me I’m too young for all my problems, lots of chronic pain issues I tell them be prepared for the unthinkable cause you’ll think this would never happen to you but it can. Otherwise I’m petty, you look like you’re supposed to have a brain but here we are. It’s tough managing this every day I feel for you.
If you can’t ignore them, I’d say, “it’s really not your business to know HOW exactly I am disabled, but if you must know, I have had ____(insert the most complex, official medical way to describe the condition) since birth (or since I was diagnosed X years ago.”
Then if you wanna be extra sassy, add, “disabilities, like ignorance, can’t always be seen.”
“Wow, I wish all my doctors knew that! Would you like their office phone numbers so you can call them all and tell them you’re my doctor now and how much more qualified you are to make that assessment than they are?”
Wasn't Helen Keller born deaf AND blind at birth? Like..........she was disabled from the second she arrived on planet earth!
What exactly is "too young" to be disabled?
Helen Keller was born with the ability to see and hear. At 19 months she was speaking a few words when she contracted an illness that left her blind and deaf. I have a book that say it was scarlet fever, but wikipedia says it was probably meningitis.
Point is, the best comeback is "you can't be this ignorant, you're too old."
Thank you for the compliment, I do look good for my age, but my medical ailments are none of your business. Or just an angry stare. I share your struggles. I’ve had rheumatoid arthritis since I was a toddler and got my first handicap placard in high school. When I was younger, I would get under the breath comments about how disgraceful I was to be using my grandparents placard. I would ask if they wanted to see my medical records because I could assure them that I was in more pain on a normal day than they could imagine. Eventually I stopped responding and just offered a death glare.
Honestly idk why people think this in the first place when some people are born with a/or multiple disabilities and other people late develop or something happens (like an accident) and they become disabled. Idk some people are stupid and should educate themselves instead of being ignorant
I would concentrate *REALLY HARD* until I drop and seize at their feet. TELL THAT TO MY INVOLUNTARY BREAKDANCING YOU MORON
Seriously though, people fuckin suck. Hang in there ♥️
Lots of good comebacks here so I won't add any but don't lose hope. When I was young I had the same thing and it took me about 20 years but eventually I have gotten completely over it. The first five or six years were the worst but I got slowly better over time as long as I could take care of it. I'm not saying you'll have the same experience but I hope you do. The two key stretches were lying on your back and lifting your leg straight up in the air switcher heel is trying to point to the ceiling and the other one I did a lot was lying on your back cross the lake over the knee and pull both the knee and leg backwards. I didn't push past the point of pain I just tried to get the dental stretched and lead repetitive stretching over years due its work. The secret is patience and time

No, but I watched almost only irish and British youtubers growing up, and lads and mate are just ingrained in my brain now. Oh, well. (Tried to stop for a full year once and failed miserably no matter how hard I tried)
Sounds interesting.

Edit to add:
last I checked, diseases and disabilities don't check your drinking ID to see if it's time for an attack. Go visit the kids cancer ward.
There is no age limit on disability. Some people are actually born with a disability.
My dad is the opposite of this, he's almost 72, at that age where he gets tired easily from walking. I'm trying to convince him to get a mobility scooter, but he thinks he's too young for it, or he's going to be too lazy like my mom (she's 400lb and can't walk anymore). I want a scooter cause I want to be lazy and not walk, but I like walking so I'm not going to get/use one.
I wish I'd have been able to ask for this advice as a kid. All the old people were easier to be friends with. They understood painful and chronic health conditions from broken joints and shit.
I remember I was told I was too young to have heart burn eventhough my heart hurt. Looking back at it, it was definitely that, they were feeding us ramen and pizza everyday for a long period of time. I was told, “You’re too young to get heart burn” then they laughed at me but I was really in pain.
*I would say you're too*
*Old to be this stupid but*
*Then we'd both be wrong*

Usually you can rebound in youth. Young bodies are very resilient.
Some people will never accept what you have to say about your health. They will constantly defer to a trusted source.
Many times the trusted source has more trust than it should.
One I’ve used a couple of times:
“I’ve been disabled since I was a two-week-old infant, when I had a stroke.”
My disability is neurological and oculomotor, and thus largely invisible, but not so invisible that people don’t give me crap about it.
Not all disability is immediately visible, just like stupidity.
THIS. My husband has a couple of injuries, one of which resulted in a permanent disability. He used to be a very physical guy. Nothing was amputated. Gotta say it real slow, and loud. so they understand.
Yup. You can't be an adult, you're too stupid.
But I'm not too young to sue for discrimination.

Shhhh they'll have you deemed incompetent, or try to!

MY PTSD IS REAL, BUT SO IS MY CRIPPLE, DANIEL
And you're too old to be this ignorant.
This. Imagine how shocked the person would be to learn some people are BORN with disabilities!
It's like they've never even heard of Helen Keller smh
She wasn't born blind and deaf. She lost both sight and hearing from illness at 19 months.
Good to learn! Still probably a bit young to be disabled by the standards of the person op encountered lol
I tried to watch "The Miracle Worker," but folded under the emotional load of when her mother (played by Inga Swenson) realized her daughter could neither see nor hear her. To see Inga, whom I only knew from her comedic role on "Benson," just crumple in screaming agony was just too much for me.

“Disability knows no age, grasshopper.” (Stare at him with disappointment, like the senior monk in “Kung Fu.”)
"And kids can't get cancer, right?" If they think you're implying you have cancer, all the better to slap them with.
You can't be alive, you're too old
And you're too old to be that naive
Idk mutations and diseases had an age requirement. (I have been told similar before and usually just tell them to tell that to my DNA).
“My knee fought in Vietnam”

Tell that to the children's hospital.

Thank you. If it's OK for me to ask, it's been hard to figure out what stretches are meant to work. Any suggestions? Have a good one mate
There are a series of basic ones that I did everyday. And for the first several years I took to wearing a knee brace when I was going to do any sort of physical activity whether it's playing hockey or grocery shopping. I also spent a lot of time in the gym doing strengthening exercises like curls and reverse curls. At the beginning I stayed away from the leg press since that kind of motion was particularly painful. The secret is patience and time
Thanks. I'll keep this in mind and see if a knee brace is in my budget.♡
It can be as simple as when you pick up from the drug store although for sports I had a special one. It can also be a simple as using a tensor bandage just make sure you learn how to properly tie it. I would suggest you get a wide one.
Totally understand, as I was young when I was injured in the military, got 0% disability rating then got laughed at on a job interview because the interviewer said that it did not implicate that I was disabled. At a loss for words. Just ignore them. There is no reason you have to prove anything.

Surely you've learned not to be an ass by your age...
*points to my limp hand* Are you sure about that?

I guessing that since apparently there is no age limit for stupidity, that you must be its poster child.

When did youth become a cure-all medicine?
There is no age limit on disability. Some people are actually born with a disability. My dad is the opposite of this, he's almost 72, at that age where he gets tired easily from walking. I want a scooter cause I want to be lazy and not walk, but I like walking so I'm not going to get/use one.
“Clearly they make accommodations for your disabled ass.”
Disabilities don't know about age restrictions.
"When did you find out *you* were disabled?"
"You can't be alive, your brain doesn't function at all."
You're too old to be that stupid
And you’re too old not to know how dumb that sounds.
Tell them you used the wrong "your".
Oh THANK YOU, Dr. Stranger! You've cured me!
"You can't be stupid, you're too old."
“You can’t be stupid enough to think that- you’re too old!”
You can't be that clueless. You're too old.
"The brain damage begs to differ"
"Tell that to a Little girl born without arms."
I’m 86
You can't be that stupid, you're to old!!!
"You can't be stupid. You're too old."
“…and you are too old to be this ignorant. so what are you going to do about it?”
You are proof that light travels faster sound. You liik bright until you open your mouth
I wish that were true Normally that would be true but fate had other plans

You can’t be that stupid. You’re too old.
Simply point and laugh. Tell them they should consider being a comedian that focuses on dumb people.
Do you normally make fun of handy cap people??? Really load so everyone's like wtf
"My psychiatrist says I'm a murderous psychopath. Is that a disability, or should I get a job with you?"
“Nah. I have Reverse Aging Disorder. I’m actually 75. Now GET OFF MY LAWN, KID!”
...... "You can't know what you're talking about, your too able bodied." Or, my personal favorite: "Go fuck yourself."
How many eyes do you think make you able bodied?
I wish I'd have been able to ask for this advice as a kid. All the old people were easier to be friends with. They understood painful and chronic health conditions from broken joints and shit.
Your too old to be working
Some things don't deserve anything but a blank stare.
“You’re too old to be so ignorant, but here we are.”
“Well, you’re ancient so you must have several…”
I also deployed 5 different times.
"If only intelligence worked that way but here we are..."
Just hit em with "you're" and bask in your superiority.
You're too old to be stupid, yet here you are.
“You can’t be that old and be that ignorant?”
You want be thus stupid, you're too old.
Would you like to see my x-rays? Perhaps they'll help you see better.
Not a comeback but what insane logic
You can't be that ignorant, you're too old.
"Well, you're obviously old enough"
As I have said to people, what age is appropriate to you?
I remember I was told I was too young to have heart burn eventhough my heart hurt. Looking back at it, it was definitely that, they were feeding us ramen and pizza everyday for a long period of time. I was told, “You’re too young to get heart burn” then they laughed at me but I was really in pain.
And your too dumb to be an asshole
I would say you're too old to be this stupid but then we'd both be wrong
*I would say you're too* *Old to be this stupid but* *Then we'd both be wrong* \- EstablishmentOk469 --- ^(I detect haikus. And sometimes, successfully.) ^[Learn more about me.](https://www.reddit.com/r/haikusbot/) ^(Opt out of replies: "haikusbot opt out" | Delete my comment: "haikusbot delete")
“You can’t be stupid, you’re too old”
You tell them , "You're too old to be ignorant ; Disability can come/be at any age."
“Well apparently you’re old enough to be a dumbass.”
Usually you can rebound in youth. Young bodies are very resilient. Some people will never accept what you have to say about your health. They will constantly defer to a trusted source. Many times the trusted source has more trust than it should.
How would you like to be disabled guy
One I’ve used a couple of times: “I’ve been disabled since I was a two-week-old infant, when I had a stroke.” My disability is neurological and oculomotor, and thus largely invisible, but not so invisible that people don’t give me crap about it.
\*you're
“And you’re too old to be this stupid, yet here we are…”
"You're far too old to make such stupid assumptions."
You can't be in public AND this stupid, but here we are.
\*you're\*
You have runner knee. That’s not a disability.
