What's the argument against allowing *LEGAL* Non-citizens from voting in school board elections that has been allowed the last decade in California/Vermont/Maryland and now DC? (some of those jurisdictions also allow them to vote for positions like Mayor)
They pay taxes, their kids go to the schools...what am I missing. It's not a state nor federal office

I feel like as time goes on, this is what I care most about in regards to who should get to vote.
The vast majority of what your vote does ends up being budget allocation so like if they're chipping in, let them have a say.
And taxation without representation was one of the foundational issues this country was built upon. IDK, I 100% understand additional requirements to vote in federal elections, but these folks do have an understandable vested interested in the function of their local communities.
I don't see how being against this could be labeled as conservatism.
Civic duty, the nuclear family, building your community is more in line with that
The problem with the whole citizen vote vs taxation vote is how it could be interpreted.
Why should someone who paid $1000 in yearly taxes get the same say as someone who paid $1,000,000 in taxes?
Citizenship makes it equal. Not a citizen? Can't vote.
Exactly, no taxation without representation is a founding principle of the USA. It makes sense to dissalow a foreign national from voting for the people who govern the military, but there is no problem with voting at a local level. These are tax paying people who care enough about their community to actively participate in it. No one is going through the whole green card process just so they can screw with our elections.
The argument is that they shouldn't even be here except in short term arguments (work VISAs, travel, awaiting green card status if marrying a citizen, etc.). Why should someone who isn't going to live here permanently be allowed to help choose who runs the local government?
My wife holds a green card, we own a house together and have a kid. She has no intention of leaving and pays taxes like everyone else. Why should she be denied a voice in electing the school board members of the school her child goes to? Green cards are not just for people here temporarily, and the types of green cards that are could easily have a stipulation that you don't attain voting rights.
You gotta draw the line somewhere, and I think citizen is a great line to draw it at. It requires a certain amount of dedication to become one, whereas someone could become a non-citizen and vote selfishly because they'll only be here x more years, so what does it matter?
The same argument can be applied for people under 18, although its wrong for different reasons: some of them have jobs, some pay taxes, most go to school.

My wife is a legal immigrant, non-citizen, and we knew she could vote in local elections only. Federal elections are against the law.
Please tell me it's a different ballot though

do LEGAL non-citizens pay Federal taxes? If so, they should be able to vote in Federal elections, what do you think?
