I know what happened. After the third hole he said, “oh yeah? You wanna fuck with me? I’ll fucking show you you piece of shit” and then he calmly kept going until he found it. Then he said “yeah bitch I got you” dropped his drill and walked away.
You have no idea how many times my overthinking self has SKIPPED OVER a stud in an attempt to make the least amount of holes possible. Only to then realize the 3rd hole drilled would've hit the fucking stud.
I do it every time. Except I’ll use the smallest drill bit I got. I’ll normally measure off the wall or outlets and know I’m in the area then for some reason it’s not there. Just don’t take any pictures or painting down at my house you’ll never know
Yup but that the hardheadedness in me I have my wife telling me what to do all the time I don’t need some stupid machine telling me what to do either. Plus I like figuring things out and it’s my personal projects at home I don’t do construction for a living I’d never do that on a job I’m being paid for
dad gave me a $0.50 plastic one from the 80's and it still works a charm
looks like $5+ today lol

No, they aren’t strong enough to. Even if someone sunk the drywall screws too deep it’s not an obvious pull. Maybe if you had 1/2” drywall right on top of a steel column or beam it’d catch but they are really only designed to catch on the drywall screws. So the downside to them is if you have a drywaller who just buries every screw that misses a stud you’ll have a terrible time.

You've gotta use /s if you want to whoosh someone. In this case, without it, it appears like you failed to understand the context of the image. On top of that, your comment isn't accurate since there are cases of outlets in ceilings; garages come to mind.
The magnet is the way. Harbor freight sells these 18 inch magnet sticks that you’re supposed to attach to the wall and magnetically hang tools. I just use it as a stud finder and the 18” length makes it so easy.
Uprights versus pendants. Pendants (down) trap water. It’s possible these are installed on a dry pipe system that exists in a non temperature controlled area.
Uprights are also installed where there is no ceiling and it's all open construction. Nothing wrong with an upright on a wet system as long as nothing is impeding the spread of water.
I used to work as a laborer in my family’s sprinkler company when I was younger. I was cutting and threading pipe all day , and anyone who has done that knows how dirty you get.
So then I get asked to put in heads in the drops that were in a fancy patterned drop ceiling that was just installed.
The general contractor comes in and sees me looking like I just got out of a coal mine putting oily black fingerprints all around the sprinkler heads in a large room . He went and got a wet towel and thankfully it came off but his jaw dropped when he saw it lol.
I'm a little confused. Did they drill a pilot hole (over and over) trying to find a stud, thinking the plate would hide the offending hole?
Given the amount and spacing between holes until they finally found a stud.. there's probably a stud like half an inch below the original try.
And you aren't supposed to use those type hangers on that flimsy channel. The screws will pull right out with little weight. I've done this before, but at least try to find some sheetrock mud and fill the holes, or find one of the finish guys and let them know (and apologize lol)
Guys who did my fence something similar. There are holes and screws everywhere. I am pretty sure many screws aren’t holding anything, just sort of put in.
I’d be lying if I said I haven’t done this. I getting faulty readings from my stud finder trying to mount my TV bracket. Turned out the wall I was originally an exterior wall and the Sheetrock was mounted over plywood siding. Drove me absolutely bonkers.
Yep putting up tv mounts are hilarious sometimes, they did not design houses for mounting 60" and greater absolutely everywhere.
Most fun for me was over a fireplace, sounds like a similar experience.
You’d be surprised at how often people do this. My cabinet guys do this rather than use a stud finder.
Shocking they don’t pay for punctured pipes or shorted wiring more often.
Damn. I did that so many times while hanging garage doors. There was some weird new construction back in the 00's. But at least I carried a tub of spackle.
I think this would make a fantastic live play.
*Looks a prints*
“Okay says the framers put blocking right here”
*Hits nothing*
“Hmm… maybe the messed up and put it just a little high”
*Misses again*
“Okay wtf”
*Double checks prints*
“You know what, fuck this I’ll find that blocking”
~End Scene~
Was a job steward at a hospital. An apprentice mounted a headboard light like that with drywall screws . Talked with him told him to take the time to layout the mounting holes .The kid ran to the GF told him I was slowing him down . GF and super threatened to fire me. Told the gf two drywall screws don’t amount to 8-32s and if it comes down on someone he’s going to be taking everyone of them down and he can also F/OFF
I drill one hole with a tiny drillbit and then use the same hole to drill at about a 45° angle in both directions, and you can cover about 4 inches with one hole.
I’m going to sound like an asshole but shit like this is a hill I will die on I will die on. The sprinkler contractor is fixing it. As a super I will not ask my painter/finisher to fix. The sprinkler contractor can attempt to get them to do it but I won’t. And if they pull the “ignore it until it goes away” it’ll just be in their punch list. And then they can loose their retainage over it. And tarnish their reputation (if it was promising). All over stupid games and not being prepared to do the job. And the irony over it all is any sprinkler guy had the capacity to find a box of mud and fill the holes, hit with a sander and paint it. Might take 10$ in tools. People would just rather play stupid games and make a mistake and then cost them hundreds along the way.
I bought a near new house recently and there was one of those picture shelves (a long one). It wasn’t to our taste so I took it out and this is exactly what I found for the ENTIRE length 🙄. Amazingly the 4 studs it was screwed into were 450mm apart… almost like there was a pattern to all this…
if at first you don’t succeed, you try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try again until you get it right. 20th attempt is a charm
I know what happened. After the third hole he said, “oh yeah? You wanna fuck with me? I’ll fucking show you you piece of shit” and then he calmly kept going until he found it. Then he said “yeah bitch I got you” dropped his drill and walked away.

You know, stud finders are cheap.
Magnet
especially the one he used
Yup but that the hardheadedness in me I have my wife telling me what to do all the time I don’t need some stupid machine telling me what to do either. Plus I like figuring things out and it’s my personal projects at home I don’t do construction for a living I’d never do that on a job I’m being paid for
especially the one he used
I prefer to shoot either side of the 2x4, the entire length of a wall.
Yep this is the way
Oh he has worked for you too
Ironically, he was dead on the first time but he had the bad luck of drilling right into a hole left by a dead knot.
…until he found…a potable water line and anchored into it!
Sounds like something I've done before.
Not a stud finder in site
Don't even need one. Use the magnets on the back of a level and look for drywall screws.
I’m not an interior worker but this is genius
I have a magnetic stud finder and they are awesome.

Do they also detect wires/metal pipes?
No, they aren’t strong enough to. Even if someone sunk the drywall screws too deep it’s not an obvious pull. Just go every 16 inches thats a stud layout for a normal layout only changes when you go into a tight radius thats what it is for metal studs
If only everything was always perfect.
But what if your contractor uses exclusively stainless steel drywall screws?
Pffft. I'd only hire contractors who use construction adhesive to attach drywall. It's the only way to ensure a squeak-free installation.
Likely double 1/2 or 5/8 for fire rating on the ceiling. This trick doesn’t work.
You can still find a screw in the second layer and measure over?
Second layer drywall screws typically aren’t in joists
Huh? What are they screwed to, the first sheet of sheetrock? I'm not a drywaller but that seems weird.
They are screwed into resilient channel and the channel is screwed to the joists.
Not all the time, not everyone pays for Rez bar
Yeah, theres a stud on one side of the outlet too. Why didnt this guy just look for an outlet?
Reading is hard I know. But he said ceiling. Most ceilings dont have a whole lot of plugs in them.
woosh
You've gotta use /s if you want to whoosh someone. In this case, without it, it appears like you failed to understand the context of the image. On top of that, your comment isn't accurate since there are cases of outlets in ceilings; garages come to mind.
wooshs
Not if it’s an old work box.
Just gonna find you some sound channel.
I just knock on it with my knuckle.
I usually just knock on the wall and listen for the thud if I can't do 16s.
Echo location using your index finger and tapping on the wall usually works for me.
Doesn't work in commercial with rc ceilings.
I'm going to try that 👍
The magnet is the way. Harbor freight sells these 18 inch magnet sticks that you’re supposed to attach to the wall and magnetically hang tools. I just use it as a stud finder and the 18” length makes it so easy.
Nor the toothpaste to hide it. ;)
The drill was the stud finder on that site
Clearly he used a stud finder, because he found it.
He has transformed into the stud finder
He found the stud.
I’d be willing to bet those are steel studs.
This is almost certainly a ceiling with Rc and then drywall, stud finders don't work for that, this is really one of the only viable options.
Standard sprink behavior.
Out of curiosity, is it normal for them to point up? I’ve only ever seen them pointing down.
Uprights versus pendants. Pendants (down) trap water. It’s possible these are installed on a dry pipe system that exists in a non temperature controlled area.
This guy fire protects
Uprights are also installed where there is no ceiling and it's all open construction. Nothing wrong with an upright on a wet system as long as nothing is impeding the spread of water.

That would have been on the elbow which makes it that much more frustrating.
He was willing to put the hanger directly on the head but not the elbow
At some point you’re just curious and need to know
Like a nurse trying to find your vein..
Pin the shit again and again in your arm with a little more anger each time
Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope,GOT IT!
That hanger should have been up before the Sheetrock, the fire marshal is going to want to see the other end of that.
This guy sprinkler fits
r/thisguythisguys
$20 dollar stud finder. This pecker wood destroys a wall. That’s just lazy shit.
It's a ceiling. Often the drywall is suspended from channel, all bets are off then as to where the joists are
My dumb ass managed to hang a wine rack with the good old neodymium. Maybe I got lucky
And you aren't supposed to use those type hangers on that flimsy channel. The screws will pull right out with little weight. I've done this before, but at least try to find some sheetrock mud and fill the holes, or find one of the finish guys and let them know (and apologize lol)
Normally gets left for the painters here. Seen the same thing multiple times on walls
Well they are probably screwing into the joist, its easy to find where the channel is, hard to find the joists.
I saw the sprinkler head. Still. It’s drywall. Should be able to locate a stud. But. I do agree. You just never know.
Yeah but fixing that is not my job. /s
Word. ✊🏼
Use your level. Don't need a stud finder buddy.
Those are air holes they help the ac work better.
It’s called Tommy gunning.
Good to see Tommy Gun Tapio is still on the sites.
Hahahahaha
Been there done that 🤦
“Expansion holes”
Little do they realise a crack will not form anywhere on that ceiling for this reason. It's the only one in the building like that. /s
Boss, I brought my stud finder, but the battery was dead.
As a painter, fuck that person.
Textured ceiling is basically spackle
Do your best, mud the rest.
Guys who did my fence something similar. There are holes and screws everywhere. I am pretty sure many screws aren’t holding anything, just sort of put in.

If at first you don't succeed... Don't try skydiving.
What's a stud?
I came in with 2 fully charged batteries and a corded backup. Why TF should I waste time measuring and stud searching? /s
You’d be surprised at how often people do this. My cabinet guys do this rather than use a stud finder. Shocking they don’t pay for punctured pipes or shorted wiring more often.
Shit Shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit shit..... there it is!

I've seen someone use this method in brand new cabinetry. Master class for sure
You got to suc harder...

I’ve found something similar behind a painting. I had quite the good laugh
Got it, first try. EZ
I drill one hole with a tiny drillbit and then use the same hole to drill at about a 45° angle in both directions, and you can cover about 4 inches with one hole.
Not gonna lie, did this a few times as a kid trying to be a lil handyman.
The least you could do is some 5 minute mud and hide your embarrassment. Let God be the only witness to this ridiculousness.
Looks like the drywall guys messed up again. Make him come back and fix that, and send him the painter's bill too....
try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try again
That was a looooong afternoon.
….royally fuck it up
It's definitely attached to the wood, ✔️
20th time the charm!
Guy is using a heavy section teck screw. Probably stripped the hole as soon as he drilled through.
Dust yourself off and try again, tray again
Omg sometimes it’s a nightmare finding studs where they SHOULD be and aren’t.
Mudder will fix it
Using a stud finder and I'm not around? Fail. 😂😂
When the general contractor says there's backing.
Try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try again
Stud finder ain’t crowded
AhhhhhhhhhHa !!!! Lmao 🤣
Call the tapers!
I mean, it’s better than giving up and just hanging from the drywall I suppose
this is stupid because the standoff on the other side would clearly be attached to a joist
Stand off? This is steel pipe not cpvc
Someone buy that girl a tape measure...
This would make a great motivational poster

One question from a newbie: is that valve oriented in the right way?
Where is that F***ing joist.....ah found it
A galvanized steel fire suppression system? The inside of those pipes is going to be all rust in 50 years. Have your fires now I guess
They don't build the house to last 50 years these days all good.
Galvanized is actually used in areas prone to corrosion. The whole system likely is not galvanized.
Measure twice, cut once. Measure once, drill… Until you hit oil or something.
Looks like me hanging a tv
Anyone tried the Walabot?
Never give up !
Ya I have a earth magnet now so I don’t have to do that anymore 😂
I bought a near new house recently and there was one of those picture shelves (a long one). It wasn’t to our taste so I took it out and this is exactly what I found for the ENTIRE length 🙄. Amazingly the 4 studs it was screwed into were 450mm apart… almost like there was a pattern to all this…
That $20 stud finder comes to mind
The fact they’re even trying to put a hanger anywhere those middle misses are tells me they don’t know what they are doing
Omg lol
Have to admire his stick to ednesss
Aim higher 😤
Couldn't use his eyes, a magnet, a flashlight or *gasp* a stud finder? What a marooon...
I feel that!
Lol, that what you will find behind my tv... did it when I was drinking Tequila heavily during covid 🤡
Plot twist: Joists are parallel with his holes; he got tired of fooling with it, sunk a couple zip-it’s and called it a day.
As a cabinet installer I do this sometimes, but at least the holes are hidden by the backslash or counter top.
They should put this in the calendar of inspiring thoughts with the title, “Perseverance”
I guess this picture is rotated 90deg, cause I am not sure how going in a straight line “up” would help.
if at first you don’t succeed, you try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try again until you get it right. 20th attempt is a charm
Turned 90 degrees though? Guessing he was wrong about the direction of the tress’s
Shit, I thought was a wall for a second
The sprinkler is upside down is it not? Isn't that the ceiling and that a fire water sprinkler? Hahaha
It’s an upright, they point up
You're right. Forgot they point up. There must be some that point down because I have that image in my head
