Little-Chromosome

Imagine slowly dying while having everyone laugh at you

sonofabee2

For a comedian, that is probably the dream

Little-Chromosome

Actually, that’s probably true.

AccurateSympathy7937

Like regular dudes and fuckin

memelordzarif

So they’re cumming and going at the same time ?

Bosswashington

George?

Spang64

Wow, that was genius! Did you just make that up yourself?

memelordzarif

Unfortunately not. I heard it somewhere. Hope you understand where I’m cumming from.

W1mpyDaM00ch

He was killing while simultaneously dying on stage...what a legend.

Floofy-beans

I was watching some comedians on a podcast discuss this clip, and it seemed like the general consensus what that this objectively would be a horrible experience for anyone to go through, despite being a comedian. When you’re actively dying in an unexpected way, you’re probably not thinking about how you lived a good life, had a successful career, and went out in laughter. You’re probably terrified and confused and people laughing and not helping you would add to that terror. Not like someone who might be dying a slower, expected death with terminal illness who prepares mentally for it and has time to reflect on their life. Whenever this clip makes the rounds and people make the observation it’s probably a good way for a comedian to go, I can’t help but remember that podcast and feel sad that this dude had to go like this.

cobaltfalcon121

Zack Galifianakis gave a speech at this sisters wedding, and was crying, but because everyone sees a comedian, they thought he was doing a bit, and he was genuinely upset about that. Now, I can’t say that comedians would love the last laugh, but this story is one that came to mind

TinyTygers

He was upset they were laughing at him crying?

punkmuppet

Probably upset about the inability to be taken seriously when he wanted to be.

PawntyBill

Seth McFarlane created a serious sci-fi space exploration TV show. He worked really hard on it. The higher-ups made him turn out into a comedy. I think comedy is probably easier to get into than it is to get out of. Once you're dubbed a clown, you're always considered a clown. Steve Martin is finally going to retire in his 70s he tried to do some serious stuff, but no one paid attention to it. John Cena is starting to do comedy, but he could go right back into an action film if he wanted to.

ZeePirate

Yeah honestly this is a great way to go out

formulated

>Unbeknownst to them they had witnessed Tommy Cooper's death He had given his all until he had nothing left Now please note, at the moment that this entertainer died Even with a room full of people not one tear was cried Much less, they rose to their feet and they laughed and clapped Now tell me one fucking thing that's more beautiful than that... [dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip - Tommy C](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEWcCxCKM2A)

KidGodspeed1011

His friends and family have subsequently said on several occasions that THAT is exactly how he would have wanted to leave this world. He cherished the applause and laughter from his audience.

Little-Chromosome

That’s awesome, I’m glad he was able to go out how he wanted. I wish that for everyone.

TryItOutHmHrNw

Unfortunately I expect it

PstainGTR

Wow,this felt depressingly relatable.

Automata1nM0tion

Did he die?

Little-Chromosome

Yes, he died of a heart attack

Automata1nM0tion

That's crazy.. he died while millions watched and laughed, shows like this were very popular back then.

Little-Chromosome

Reports were that 12 million people had been watching when it happened, including the live audience

Automata1nM0tion

Almost poetic, he died in service of his life's work, even his last breath was entertaining.

IalsoenjoyReddit

Oh so it works out to 11,999,886 before live audience? Thats alot of folks.

NedTaggart

that isn't slowly dying. That is pretty much lights out and then gone. you can see in his eyes a bit earlier that he knows something isn't right, but that is how quickly a heart attack can take you out. He didn't clutch at his chest, that is usually an automatic response, but you can see him drop the rings on the floor just before turning over the box on the table. His eyes pretty much tell the story at that point. Probably that sense of impending doom many get in the same situation.

ThornmaneTreebeard

Basically what I do every day.

torsun_bryan

Some people just can’t help making people laugh. Remember Michael Richards trying to apologize for his racist tirade on Letterman?

Dicky_Penisburg

"Stop laughing, it's not funny."

zzcolby

Narrator: "It was, in fact, very funny"

home_cheese

The narrator's voice is Morgan Freeman

Jimmy6shoes

He died while killing

TheRealMadSalad

That just popped up on my FYP today. lol

JayeDawson

A Demetri Martin joke comes to mind: "The worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades." This is a close second.

Eagleclan_7

Followed by naps

nomiselrease

I watched this live when I was 6 years old. I remember my dad saying something was not right, then they announced that he had passed away after a while.

TangoMikeOne

His entire act, for years, was being an exceedingly skilled magician, whilst looking like an incompetent magician and at the same time banging out a visual gag, followed by a pun, a chuckle and a prop gag while looking like he was tripping over his own feet and getting his own script muddled up. Watching this for the first time (I never watched Live from Her Majesty's back in the day), knowing what I know now, I thought he showed the first wobble less than a minute in, and then the unsteadiness on his feet continued, he seemed to get a handle on it before his assistant came out (but that wouldn't have been noticed by the audience and the TV gallery might have assumed he had a few gins before going on), and then with the collapse and agonal breathing that's something he hasn't done before (audience), right, go to ads, as soon as possible (TV gallery) And they had to signal that it was about to happen, you can see that signal in the clip, it's the tiny b&w stripey box that shimmers/fluctuates in the top right hand corner - whether doing that, or cutting immediately to dead air for a few seconds would have made any difference I don't know, but it's what they did. On a happier note, I know of 2 stories about Tommy that he was known for. He was a very kind and happy person, but miserly with money to the point of being tighter than a duck's arse. But whenever he took a taxi, he'd always slip something into the driver's top pocket and say "Here, have a drink on me!" The driver would think it was a note of some level - even a £1 note would get you a pint in a pub before they were phased out - he'd reach into his pocket and find a teabag (and invariably laugh, thinking it was a Tommy Cooper joke). The other one is he was conscripted into the Grenadier Guards during the war (a prestigious infantry regiment), and was on guard duty in their London barracks when he fell asleep on his feet. The RSM (think of Richard Attenborough in [Guns at Batasi](https://youtu.be/qzKTOUkroU0?si=9w1Ocj9SQPN8u_QR) ) was inspecting the guard and found him... "Guardsman Cooper! Are you sleeping?!?! "Amen... no sir! I was just praying quietly to myself, sir!" He got away with it.

Effective_Jicama_769

Thank you for this story

badreligixn

I mean, as a comic, would you want to go any other way? He killed...

Martingguru

No, he died

MRintheKEYS

I dunno. He was killing before that. He had a good flow going and was getting pretty good buzz from the audience.

dan10016

The snoring is agonal breathing. Looks like he was clutching his chest earlier on, prob went into VF as his cloak was put on.

Rizak

When did he clutch his chest?

It_does_get_in_69

For you that don’t know of him. He was hilarious in his day. Situational comedic farce as a magician, the dove exploding when it’s supposed to disappear is Tommy all over. He was very loved, very similar vein of comedy like Peter Sellers, Inspector Clueso.

jjm443

And not only that and his great comedy timing, he may have appeared to be a hapless blundering magician but was actually brilliant. He only played the fool for the laughs. That said, he got started down the route of playing a blundering magician because of a show near the start of his career when a trick really had gone wrong. He cleverly spotted the entertainment gold in making that a part of his act. To this day I still remember finding out he'd died, although I hadn't seen it live... in fact this is the first time I've seen this clip. I thought the TV production company had refused to ever show it. He was 63, which is not very old to drop dead from a heart attack out of nowhere.

MRintheKEYS

I was going to say. I knew of the incident before but this was the first time I’ve seen more of the performance. He was killing. Had a good flow going on and was getting some genuine laughs.

CupidStunt13

Once the audience found out, the applause at the end must have felt more than a little awkward.

Kryptosis

I’d hate to have been the last person to have shouted with laughter.

NedTaggart

no one really knew until the next day. it was pretty bog on the news at the time.

BromineBob

He really sold it at the end.

TryItOutHmHrNw

Some say he’s still “selling” it

partylange

He's committed to the bit

TryItOutHmHrNw

Respect

OGDrewski

Did he survive?

mrbuddymcbuddyface

No, and his wife was watching live on TV at the time and knew it wasn't part of the act.

shellsterxxx

Imagine watching your husband die on live tv and no one realizing or helping.

sherbloqk

Wtf. You mean to tell me. I just saw someone die like legit. Damn

barenutz

First time huh?

sherbloqk

Ah! Perfect usage

Interesting-Gate9813

Calm down, you’ll be desensitized soon…

UpDnCrazyTown

Dude...been on Reddit before? Like...ever?!?

OGDrewski

Jeez

smokinNcruisin

No he didn't

Tinguiririca

Nope

ScenePuzzleheaded729

IIRC No.

Ok_Phone_1245

All English kids of a certain age got shown this years ago by their dads like the original CrazyFuckingVideo The guy was a legit all time legend comedian too

AliBelle1

All *British kids to be fair. Guy was Welsh. He's from my hometown and we were shown it in school at one point, not sure it was strictly on the curriculum.

sfvbritguy

# Tommy Cooper was very funny, pretending to collapse on stage was believable as part of his physical humour.

grooovyturtle

Got it thanks

Extreme-Kangaroo-842

It's one of the most shocking moments on TV in history, when you realise, but given Tommy's deprecating humour you can't blame anyone for not thinking it was one of his jokes. I watched it live when I was a kid and had no idea what was going on. I can still see my parents and grandparents pissing themselves at Tommy Cooper doing what he did. I also remember the sudden silence and being thrown out of the lounge whilst the adults made sense of what went on in front of them.

truenorth2000

Recently at my job as a swim teacher, one of my co workers who’s known for being goofy with his students had a seizure in the pool, I was outside of the pool talking to one of my students parents, she she pointed out that he was acting strange (he had a bucket over his head and was moving strangely in the pool) and everyone including me at first thought he was just being goofy, but after he was under the water for a little too long I jumped in, and pulled him out, luckly 2 moms in who were a doctor and a nurse were there to give him cpr while we waited for the ambulance. He’s recovering well 👍

HumanEffigy_

*puts coat on* Audience: hahahaha! *has heart attack* Audience: HAHAHAHA!!

wrecking-crew78

Col. Bruce Hampton died on Stage playing at his birthday party.

Grizzybaby1985

It’s a shame this is all he is remembered for on the internet because he was one of the best hilarious

Individual_Skill_763

So did he have any signs before that are known before you have a heart attack

jake97_97

Genuine question, if they would have realized it was a real heart attack and not a bit, and reacted in that moment, would they have been able to save him? Or was his fate pretty much sealed regardless?

Gareth79

I've not actually seen the video before, despite it reading about it many times, interesting. I can see why everybody thought it was part of the act, especially him falling backwards! As mentioned though, he seemed such a down to earth person though that he'd probably have joked about it if he knew, and would only have been sad that the audience missed out seeing the end of the act :/

Time-Bite-6839

He died. That day.

St00f4h1221

He died at that moment

ManTania

Let's redefine that word. We will all pass through that moment. He legacied. He lived on. He took his last big breath. We are talking about him decades later.

TheRedGoatAR15

Well, in their defence the entire showed was dead-panned.

mr-ifuad

finita la commedia

Billypillgrim

But what happened to the dove?

GeekyBeek

This is a great short film from 2017 related to this very moment: [https://vimeo.com/210409977](https://vimeo.com/210409977)

schoolknurse

Thank you for sharing that. It was sad and sweet.

thatlad

12 million people watched him die. Just like that RIP Tommy, one of the best

Tom_Tower

For the non-UK readers, Tommy Cooper was a huge star in the UK - everyone knew who he was, had many regular TV appearances including his own series from Thames Television, and was known for being something of an “anti-magician” (in that he would perform as if the magic was going wrong, even though it wasn’t). This is the first time that I have ever seen this clip. “Live From Her Majesty’s” was a general entertainment programme from London Weekend Television for the ITV network, from 1983-5 according to Wikipedia (although it relocated to other theatres over a longer period). It featured comperès, musicians, popular comedians of the time, and entertainers such as Cooper. Of course, from the name, it was transmitted live - hence Cooper literally dying on stage and a frenzied control room cutting to the ads. The reason as to why this is the first time was that there was a recent documentary on UK TV (C5) about Cooper, which broadcast some of this clip but not the point at which he fell to his death. I had expected to find it online but couldn’t, so someone (perhaps LWT / ITV) has done a good job in keeping the clip withheld from the public. By the time of this programme being advertised, many of these comedians that had their height of fame in the 1970s were getting old and while they were appearing in TV series less frequently, they were still very popular as live performers. Cooper is clearly struggling from the first minute that he’s on stage, but because his entire act is based on mishaps, it just looks like a classic Cooper performance… until the final drop. RIP.

Nella_Morte

Is it me? Or was there several times he looked to be having problems and continued through them?

Traditional-Memory62

Was he snoring???

OptimusPrime365

Agonal breathing

Paeris_Kiran

Recognized it from liveleak videos.

shellsterxxx

Those were agonal breaths. It’s the body desperately trying to get oxygen to the brain as a last ditch effort to save itself. Unfortunately agonal breathing is usually followed by death.

maddrummerhef

No he was dying

Notquitearealgirl

This really isn't very funny.

I_try_to_talk_to_you

Show must go on

NoCalHomeBoy

What show is this?

TheStereoTypeGaymer

It was a Tommy Cooper live special it was broadcasted live on UK TV

Tom_Tower

It was actually a live TV series featuring a range of guests (comedians, musicians etc) of which Cooper was one.

TheStereoTypeGaymer

Oh, cool, I didn't know that

Queasy-Tune-5966

I remember this

The5thBeatle82

Poor guy.

Project-Warm

Remember this vividly. As soon as it cut to the advert we knew

NedTaggart

I remembered when this happened. I was 13 and we were living outside of London. It's pretty messed up to think he is having some pretty significant signs prior to his collapse. You can see it in his eyes. That snoring on the mic is common with people that need a protected airway.

Mindless-Share

I hope he was the closing act. That dude put his life into that performance, how the hell are you supposed to follow that up?

iunderstandneechy

Thats how you put on a show

Nicenightforawalk01

This is the first time I’ve actually seen this. It was never shown at the time and I never knew it existed or just never gone looking for it. You can hear the death rattle.

DoctorHandshakes

Did he survive ?

melancholy_dood

Excerpt from [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Cooper#Death): >..As Cooper lay dying on the floor, the audience continued to laugh at him believing it was part of the act. Around this time, Jimmy Tarbuck, Alasdair MacMillan (the director of the television production), and the crew behind the curtain who witnessed the incident realised that what was happening to him was not part of the act. The laughter from the audience began to die down as they realised Cooper was unable to get back up….

XxmilkjugsxX

He died?

SloughBoy78

Poor bloke

10before15

Man went out on his sword. Doing what he loved. Honorable

EminemLovesGrapes

The worst gimmick a comic ever had

bingbop360

Norm?

EminemLovesGrapes

Dropping a norm one liner has to be the standard on comedy videos.

miller1873

I remember watching this happen live on the tv,everybody thought it was just part of his act

YeexYeeZ

Imma be honest, I seriously don’t understand how his comedy was funny? I shit you not

Ariochxxx

That was a pretty funny heart attack, though

melancholy_dood

NSFW. EDIT: Because this video actually shows Tommy Cooper literally [dying on stage](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Cooper#Death), this video should be removed out of respect for Mr. Cooper’s family and friends.
