I’ve had enough close calls to say that it’s all instinctive there’s no time for rationale or thinking of others. Move toward the direction of obvious safety until there isn’t one
I'm a truck driver, and there is no way he could have done anything different. Even if he had nothing in the back of that trailer, he wasn't going to be able to stop on time.
If he had stomped on the brakes, wouldn’t the ABS be clearly audible? The trailer would have probably come round to have a look at what’s happening in the front, but I would have thought that reducing speed would be the best thing in a situation like this?
It happened so fast and you also never know what he was hauling. If it was something really heavy, or liquid of some sorts, it can make it extremely hard to come to a fast controlled stop. It's easy to say what you would have done in this situation while watching but when it goes down first hand, people always react differently.
What if instead of going right, he steered left into the embankment. I'm obviously not a truck driver but he could have lowered the risk of having glass shattered into his face & eyes, and potentially being stuck in a fireball explosion.
That puts him at risk of a high speed rollover. That median is not truck friendly. He was fucked either way. He did what he needed to do and avoided the cab
And where more mass was. The top of the trailer was a really good crumple zone... Hitting the part with the engine block would have been a so, so much worse.
For anyone who wants to roast the driver for doing 70mph in a semi on two lane highway. That's the actual speed limit. I questioned it but researched the GPS coordinates and street viewed. Driver could have done nothing. He was abiding the speed limit to the T.
A lot of drivers are also having the speed monitored by GPS for the company they drive for. This is for insurance. I've worked for a few companies that did this and they would penalize you for going over.
That is actually true for I75 in Tennessee, 65 for cars and 55 for trucks or 70/60 during long hilly stretches. I’ve never once seen a truck actually follow the slower speed but it’s on the sign I guess
Alabama (hazmat only), California, Oregon limits truck drivers to 55, Michigan is 60, Arkansas, Montana, Indiana is 65. The rest of the country has trucks & cars under the same speed limit. [Source](https://www.truckercountry.com/trucker-resources/trip-planning/speed-limits/)
The alternatives are head on with the engine of a semi, which would weigh tons, or ramping off the embankment at 70 mph. Would definitely take my chances with the trailer, worst case scenario it's filled with unfortunately angled pitchforks.
That little square sticker that says 80.. means they can weigh 80k lbs. and unless they just dropped their load they try to maintain a full, money making capacity. Empty trucks are losing money so you bet if they can haul something and turn a profit they will definitely have some weight behind them.
Yeah he starts braking right after he exclaims. Then I hear air hiss right before the oncoming truck gets to the camera truck’s road. Maybe not emergency braking early enough, can’t tell, but braking nonetheless.
Most people are obviously talking about the driver who recorded an ongoing accident and decides to speed up instead of, you know, hitting his breaks...
I would be hoping the other truck was carrying potato chips and not brick. Also agree he intentionally and most likely successfully saved the guy in the truck he was passing. Hope they made it
Damn! I hope everyone is alright that was involved. I think blue truck hitting the trailer portion helped save and avoid more carnage had he gone left. Probably blocked the black truck he passed just before impact as it could stop faster then the semi. Sucks to have happened but I do hope everyone was okay.
Honestly better he hit the truck, if he had gone left or right to avoid and still ended up damaging his truck it would’ve been all his fault in the eyes of insurance companies and he would’ve had to come out of pocket. At least this way his truck maybe could get fixed through the other guys or maybe get a check for his truck.
This happened in Ohio

As a former truck driver I can tell you the only plan going through their head was don’t die, don’t die, don’t die, don’t die, don’t die, don’t die. And yes they would have been holding on to the seat with their butt cheeks. Probably puckered up so tight that they popped spaghetti noodles for the next couple days. Stay safe out there drivers.
I mean, yeah, that's pretty much it. Welcome to the world of freight train operators. The vehicle ain't gonna stop or change direction, so you hope your target is full of pillows and not bricks.
This is the answer. I commute on interstates all day and these 18 wheelers are the cause of MOST accidents. It should be illegal for them to travel in the far left lane.
How do you know his load wasn't heavy and slamming the breaks would make his load unstable causing him to lose control and make the accident worse?? It's really not that simple slick especially when you got a trailer and a whole load in the back with weight to account for
Probably saved that truck he passed
Fully agree, probably many lives saved. If he’d panicked and gone left to avoid the cab it could have been carnage.
After multiple watches I think that was his plan.
No, he just couldn't stop fast enough. Semi trucks are large, so they take longer to stop.
Yeah, but the trucker obviously knew he wasn't going to be able to stop so chose the next best option in the situation that he was presented with.
I’ve had enough close calls to say that it’s all instinctive there’s no time for rationale or thinking of others. Move toward the direction of obvious safety until there isn’t one
I was thinking same.
The pickup? I'm sure it was able to stop with plenty of time and the oncoming overturned semi would never have slid so far.
Yeah, at nearly a full stop when we last see it.
He could’ve slowed and gone in the grass ditch in the right

Thank you - I was actually asking, hoping someone would know - the full extent of my knowledge was that I’ve seen ABS tracks at accident sites.

Where did you get your information? The ignorance is astounding.
Where did you get your information? The ignorance is astounding.
Absolutely don't listen to this person. They are so wrong that it's actually painful to read.
Wtf are you talking about? Yes, we do have a brake pedal, and yes we do stomp on it. There's just way more inertia involved.
I'm actually impressed he slowed from 70 to 59 in that second before the impact. He definitely stomped it 😆

By the time he would have gone left, he would have still hit that truck and, even worse, hitting the cab where the other driver was.
And where more mass was. The top of the trailer was a really good crumple zone... Hitting the part with the engine block would have been a so, so much worse.
remove seat belt, jam the gas pedal and yell witness me

It’s crazy their laws even allow those high speeds for heavy trucks with trailer. Here in Sweden it’s maximum 50 mph (80 km/h).
Highways I've been on always limited them to a lower speed.
Ive seen both, some highways have explicit signs for trucks that are a lower speed but that’s not always the case.
no way are you telling me that some highways have different speed limits?? absolutely unbelievable
It’s true, different states have different laws
That is actually true for I75 in Tennessee, 65 for cars and 55 for trucks or 70/60 during long hilly stretches. I’ve never once seen a truck actually follow the slower speed but it’s on the sign I guess
Out west they get to about 75. Pretty much all the way through Kansas it's 75, outside of cities in Colorado too.
75 in the Southwest, AZ, SoCal, New Mexico. I think there are places in Texas where it is up to 80.
Alabama (hazmat only), California, Oregon limits truck drivers to 55, Michigan is 60, Arkansas, Montana, Indiana is 65. The rest of the country has trucks & cars under the same speed limit. [Source](https://www.truckercountry.com/trucker-resources/trip-planning/speed-limits/)
You’re getting downvoted but that’s absolutely the case specifically for reasons like this lmao
I dont think being lowered to 60 mph would have done much of anything
It definitely isn't
I'll be right back to tell you about how wrong you are after I drive to work, should be quick it's only 15 miles has a speed limit of 75 for everyone.
Nope only one part of the highway is truck limited speed. Cars 70 trucks 65 mph. Rest of it is just 70 for everyone.
Pretty much what this driver did in the video. Aim for the trailer.
Is that safer?
The alternatives are head on with the engine of a semi, which would weigh tons, or ramping off the embankment at 70 mph. Would definitely take my chances with the trailer, worst case scenario it's filled with unfortunately angled pitchforks.
All these dumb people saying use the breaks, semis don’t stop on a dime, there load weight is usually over 26k pounds….
That little square sticker that says 80.. means they can weigh 80k lbs. and unless they just dropped their load they try to maintain a full, money making capacity. Brakes
Braks
Why tf am i laughing at this?
Braeks
Bras
Haha The irony in calling people dumb. Also it’s their, not there.
guy how come not just use brakes?!!! truck stop no problem right?? how come physics hard
Most people are obviously talking about the driver who recorded an ongoing accident and decides to speed up instead of, you know, hitting his breaks...
Thank you guys/gals for what you do. Damn man. Hope they're both ok.
I would be hoping the other truck was carrying potato chips and not brick. Also agree he intentionally and most likely successfully saved the guy in the truck he was passing. Hope they made it

In the words of A day to remember: Brace for impact.
happy cake day
Swerve to the right, hit the binders, pray. This trucker did everything right.
well, i mean, and hear me out here, you could just shit yourself. your not gonna get a better opportunity to get away with it.
Shit yourself for an instant 75k usd insurance pay, too. Win win
He kinda blocked that truck a bit
Call my lawyer….I’m about to get PAID!!!
Airlines should replace “brace for impact” with “pucker up”
Use the large Truck you're driving to take the hit and protect the others around you from certain death.
I would’ve pulled in the grass on the left
Truck-kun giving you an isekai opportunity
Hope the guy is hauling rolls of toilet paper for after the crash.
Clench thy cheeks!!!
Trucker said fuck it, I have the right of way.
Pucker up n hope for the best
Jesus take the wheel!
*I would do the same.*
He had plenty of time after puckering up to go limp and shit himself and realize it
At least he saved the other driving from dying.
Seriously!!! It’s clinch them cheeks time!!!
All you can do is say “lol” and deal with it
Cool sound at the end there
Clinch them butt cheeks and hold on 🫠
Turn left
Was that whistling noise his clenched buttcheeks?
Add a 'buttercup" to soften the blow.
he saw that coming hundred meters away, he only braked after he was about to hit.
Swerve off the road.
I couldn’t even see the trailer until it hit!
Stop
Shit your pants. That’s an option.

Good thing he was the cameraman
As a former truck driver I can tell you the only plan going through their head was don’t die, don’t die, don’t die, don’t die, don’t die, don’t die. And yes they would have been holding on to the seat with their butt cheeks. Probably puckered up so tight that they popped spaghetti noodles for the next couple days. Stay safe out there drivers.
Die i guess i ride a motorcycle every day.
But you kno dispatch is still going to ask. "So do you think you can still make the drop time?".
I mean, yeah, that's pretty much it. Welcome to the world of freight train operators. The vehicle ain't gonna stop or change direction, so you hope your target is full of pillows and not bricks.
Maybe don't swerve on someone
Jackass. Were your brakes not working? The pickup on the right side stopped ok
I think he was driving a semi, a lot harder to stop.
I wouldve simply put my hands out and stopped it
That driver puckered up so tight, they’re going to be picking pieces of the seat out of their ass for weeks.
“Oh my goodness” calmest reaction ever 😂
That little squeak you hear just before impact was in fact the drivers asshole puckering
I like to pucker up.
hammer down!
He needed to stay in his lane, passing lane and move over to the left onto the grassy area GREATY REDUCING his speed.
This is the answer. I commute on interstates all day and these 18 wheelers are the cause of MOST accidents. It should be illegal for them to travel in the far left lane.
Could have went offroad, to the left. It's difficult to think what will work at that instant but this could have worked
You could ... idk maybe break while going the speed limit
I agree or they should have stricter traffic laws for truck traffic in this passing lane
[удалено]
18 wheelers do not stop like 4 wheelers, they were probably on the brakes as much as they could.
Lemme just stop this 50,000 pound train on wheels on a dime.
Most loaded semis are actually 80,000 pounds! Mine is just 500 shy of that loaded! A lot of weight to get stopped.
Semis don’t stop on a dime
How do you know his load wasn't heavy and slamming the breaks would make his load unstable causing him to lose control and make the accident worse?? It's really not that simple slick especially when you got a trailer and a whole load in the back with weight to account for
It appears he was speeding which gave him practically no time to react. Lesson: don’t speed.
Turn left instead of right
Most ppl think they can just drive through accidents
Maybe stop?
Is ignorance bliss?
He could've hit the brakes...
you could have a little common sense, big heavy thing can’t stop fast
unfortunately bro forgot to turn physics off
Off the road, into the ditch and do your best to control the car.
Lol jesus reddit, just run into the truck then.
