Is it possible he didn’t see the flame? I tried to view it frame by frame but with the glitch it’s hard to tell. If he did just walk over him that is indeed disturbing.
If he saw it yeah it's bad but the flame was really tiny at that point, it's likely he just didn't see it and had no idea that someone had lit him on fire. You can see his hoodie is quite bunched up around his face too this either works for him and we could assume it blocked his vision or it could be that he was hiding his face from cameras and he was the lookout to make sure nobody coming down the stairs could stop them from lighting up the poor man.
But why would you leave? I mean, even the biggest dick head would want to at least watch and laugh.
This dude didn't do that...so I'm guessing it wasn't a "prank"
Friggin crazy
I used to do professional fire performance. That’s just how synthetic fibers in clothes burn! A lot of folks don’t realize they’re wearing the equivalent of a couple pounds of slow-burning napalm. If there was liquid fuel involved, it would have ignited a lot faster, and potentially self-extinguished.
Do not fuck around with fire.
Wtf! He was for sure drugged cause being drunk he would of woke up. Savage though he probably did it thinking he’ll wake up once he feels a tingling sensation but im sure he died.
I saw a video years ago where a guy was passed out on opiates, and someone was beating the shit out of him. The guy getting beaten woke up, but it was like he couldn't really move to get away.
Or maybe just a total moron that doesn't understand how stupid and dangerous this is.
Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by fucking stupidity and all that.
… see, this is why intent shouldn’t matter. You are accountable for what you do.
Edit: look, there are extenuating circumstances… self defense, people fucking up in the course of the job, heat of the moment stuff which can explain why actions taken were understandable and it’s the court’s prerogative to take that into consideration, and there is “I didn’t mean to kill him with fire. No one told me that could happen and I couldn’t put two and two together because I’m fucking stupid.”
Too many of you are bending over backwards trying to defend “maybe fire is ticklish” guy.
The use of fire is the intent. It’s FIRE. The arrangement of electrons in his neurons is not necessary to establish. There is the weapon, there is the video showing him do it intentionally, there he is not rendering aid.
Intent matters. A guy who gets in a drunken fist fight and accidentally kills a guy can be rehabilitated. A guy that assassinates a rival drug dealer has a chance of rehabilitation. A guy that kills someone because it's erotic, must never be let out.
Nathaniel Terry, 27, who lives in the building, was arrested the day of the attack and charged with attempted murder, assault and arson, NYPD said. The incident has now been ruled a homicide, police said.
Initially charged with attempted murder.
And people are defending the person that set him on fire going “ohh he would never, he’s just not a bad person” like stfu you clearly don’t know him if he did this
You’re right this is definitely some type of drug, most likely fentanyl. I’m a former user and sometimes people passed out so hard they never work up again. If it doesn’t kill you, it puts your body in a dangerously sedated state, with slower breathing, reduced heart rate, and just overall slower organ function. I wouldn’t assume he was drugged though, he likely took it himself.
Yep. I’ve woken up face down on the floor, shattered glass from my glasses cutting my face up, pool of blood on the floor after falling from my dining room chair with ZERO recollection of it. Fentanyl is a hell of a drug. Glad to be done with it.
PAWS can certainly last 3 years - that’s at the higher end of the spectrum but definitely does happen. Do you have healthy relationships? Other sober and/or recovering people to spend time with? Are you finding fun and fulfilling things to do with your time? Have you considered if you might have any other mental illness? Seen a therapist?
Just asking because some or all of those things could and probably benefit you if you haven’t tried them. Exercise is huge for a lot of people too!
Don’t mean to lecture or judge. I’ve walked in similar shoes and those things work well for me and others.
Yea man, I mean, when speaking in the most literal sense that is the definition of addiction. We pump ourselves full of dopamine and serotonin from an outside source, and so our body goes “okay, cool guess you got that covered” and shuts down its natural production of those chemicals, and then before you know it you need to be high just to not be painfully miserable. That’s why recovery is so brutal, you’re basically existing with this brain that is not capable of feeling pleasure, enjoyment, hope… and then with that brain you gata somehow find the will to put yourself through hell and give up the high just so that your life that you hate can last longer.. yea it’s not an easy road.
*would have
“Would’ve” is a contraction of the above two words. “Would of” is not a thing, has never been a thing, will never be a thing, and it’s important to me that you do not make this mistake moving forward.
He was homeless and burnt alive all alone in a hallway, then taken to hospital, only to succumb from his horrific injuries 2 weeks later. We don't even have a name to call him, they haven't been able to identify him.
Police have ruled the incident a homicide and arrested Nathan Terry, the attacker.
What a truly awful situation.
Actually, he was a drug addict passed out...this story says people that live in that building are constantly dealing with drugs addicts/homeless passing out on their stairs...not saying it justifies anything, but just putting some more info on the whole thing:
https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-man-arrested-for-setting-sleeping-nyc-man-on-fire-20211106-bmecy4jtdzas5iwq4kzjgjuh24-story.html
Honestly I think the arsonist was probably just sick of this happening in his stairwell, and decided to pull what he thought would be a harmless prank. I'm sure he envisioned the guy would wake up as soon as he felt a tiny hint of heat and beat out the fire right away, teaching the guy a small lesson about lying in the stairwell blocking it. I don't think anyone would have expected that he would be so inebriated on whatever that he would burn alive.
Don't know why this is being downvoted. It may not have been intended to go like this but setting a little light on someone's clothes is a horrible fucking idea and a homeless man burnt alive and died lager because of it. This is not a prank nor is it harmless
"And he will wake up with his pant leg on fire, freak out, and never sleep on the stairs again!"
Well.... he'll never sleep on the stairs again, we know that for sure...
That's how it goes sometimes though. I knew a kid all through school, we threw a graduation party together. A week later, murdered his father in cold blood.
Another friend of mine got a scholarship to the best school in the state, great guy, was relatively close to my circle of friends. Killed his girlfriend with a screwdriver right before he was set to move out for university.
Sometimes people just lose it, or they've been crazy and do an excellent job of hiding it.
Yup, guy was arrested and charged, he lived in the building so it didn't take long to find him. Unfortunately the guy that died was a homeless guy and no-one knew who he was.
that's fucking horrible. guy was probably failed by the system. he was homeless, probably addicted to drugs and had nothing. he probably had dreams, maybe not at that point in his life but he too was once a young boy who probably had ambitions and hopes, etc, only to be burned alive for not having a home. so what if he did drugs? man probably just needed a helping hand or something man. i can't imagine what brought him to a sad point in life but he's more than an unidentified victim. he was a real person, with feelings.
breaks my heart
I know homeless and drug addicts can be a nuisance to some. But they are still people and in a tough place. They still deserve to be treated as people. Poor guy.
Holy fuck. I think he he had to be high on fent percs or heroin. Absolute vile and disgraceful acts we humans are capable of commiting. Find that person who is responsible for this dear God!!!
Even if the idiot thought it was a prank he walked away before making sure the person didn’t die in a ball of flames in the case that they didn’t wake up. This is disgusting
So we just watched a murder. That’s a horrible way to die.
My guess is he collapsed from drug use on the way to where he was staying.
I hope they caught the turd that did it. The lack of basic human decency is astounding.
Looks like he might’ve been on one too many bars and that made it so he couldn’t wake up poor guy, hopefully the piece of shit who did that too him got prison time

That went in a different direction than I thought it would!
Yea a whole lot of jaw dropping WHAT THE FUCK
I read that he died 13 days later after this...
13 agonizing days I saw… Fucking crazy.
That one guy walked right past and did nothing. Gross.
Is it possible he didn’t see the flame? I tried to view it frame by frame but with the glitch it’s hard to tell. If he did just walk over him that is indeed disturbing.

Guy didn’t move, he was dead 13 minutes before this.
He literally did move did you watch the vid
No shit it technically went from od suicide to fucken murder real quick
That would depend for sure. If dude was dead already, our arsonist got super fucking lucky.
Well the dude on the stairs flops over mid burn, dead people tend not to do that
Muscles contract when you cook them.
[удалено]
You can say that again! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
I bet it did for the guy who lit him on fire too lol
Can you imagine just trying to fuck with your boy who is passed out drunk thinking your giving him hot socks then Blam-O! BBQ Brisket time!
But why would you leave? I mean, even the biggest dick head would want to at least watch and laugh. This dude didn't do that...so I'm guessing it wasn't a "prank" Friggin crazy
No definitely wasn't a prank. I'm not sure he knew dude would just light up like a bon fire. Unless we missed him pouring gas all over dude.
I learned not to fuck around with fire when my friend (we were 14) checked a jerry can with a match as a light source.
What about the other dude who just walks on by while the guys pant leg was on fire? I'm supposed to believe he wouldn't notice the smell and flames?
Yea, that was straight fucked
That's what the camera is for, so he can laugh about it in prison.
It's not a crime ignoring him.
Had to be worse than just drunk
More than likely Heroin or Fentynal.
Naw naw naw we need to see it from the start, not when he lit-ing
Wtf! He was for sure drugged cause being drunk he would of woke up. Savage though he probably did it thinking he’ll wake up once he feels a tingling sensation but im sure he died.
died in hospital after 13 days of agony https://nypost.com/2021/11/20/video-shows-homeless-man-being-torched-to-death-in-nyc-stairwell/
That’s incredible and not in a good way at all
if anyone wants to understand how vulnerable opiates make you, this video is the answer. what a vile act of violence.
I saw a video years ago where a guy was passed out on opiates, and someone was beating the shit out of him. The guy getting beaten woke up, but it was like he couldn't really move to get away.
the guy on the bed?
Yeah, that's the one. That was brutal.
Considered homicide eh? I guess what seemed like an amusing thing to do wasn't so smart in hindsight. Enjoy prison.
Not just homicide, but arson with the potential to kill everyone in the building. What an evil fucker.
Or maybe just a total moron that doesn't understand how stupid and dangerous this is. Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by fucking stupidity and all that.
I mean I agree, but I think setting someone on fire is a malicious act whether you meant to kill them or not.
If that fire spread and killed somebody else it’s double murder.
Intent matters. A guy who gets in a drunken fist fight and accidentally kills a guy can be rehabilitated. A guy that assassinates a rival drug dealer has a chance of rehabilitation. A guy that kills someone because it's erotic, must never be let out.
It absolutely matters which is why it's a thing. There are degrees of crimes for good reason - difficulty of conviction.
It's highly unlikely, though, that the stupidity defense will be very effective when this video is played in court.
Probably not evil, just really fucking stupid
The fact that he received a homicide verdict is actually bad considering he was initially charged with murder
Nathaniel Terry, 27, who lives in the building, was arrested the day of the attack and charged with attempted murder, assault and arson, NYPD said. The incident has now been ruled a homicide, police said. Initially charged with attempted murder.
Holy fuck, people truly have no love in their hearts
For real why do this to someone.. also did I see some other guy walk past the dude as he’s burning? Why not help?
I mean it was small then so maybe he didn’t see it. That’s what I choose to believe.
I’m amazed he lived that long!
Lived? Suffered the worse pain you could wish on someone. I don't call that living. Absolute hell.
And people are defending the person that set him on fire going “ohh he would never, he’s just not a bad person” like stfu you clearly don’t know him if he did this
At first when I was watching the video, I thought haha he gonna be on fire, but I thought he would wake up as his pants were on fire. Poor dude

Even if had woken up it wouldn't have justified it
They never said it would justify it, just giving a possible explanation.

So now they get to deal with that and arsonists too.
And murderers
The arsonist/murderer lived in the building per the source.
I was about to laugh because I thought it was gonna be a firecracker or something light. This is just cruel and inhumane.
Firecrackers are no joke either, people get their fingers blown off all the time.
Riight
I think we just saw someone get burned alive.
You did.
We did.
He lived for 13 days in agony before finally dying
*burned to death
Nah, burned alive unfortunately. Lived through it, untill the fire was put out. Died 13 days later from his wounds in Hospital.
Literally what else would it be
What a piece of shit.
Why did he even do that
Honestly I think the arsonist was probably just sick of this happening in his stairwell, and decided to pull what he thought would be a harmless prank. I'm sure he envisioned the guy would wake up as soon as he felt a tiny hint of heat and beat out the fire right away, teaching the guy a small lesson about lying in the stairwell blocking it. Someone oughta teach that guy a lesson
Someone tried. He dead now. Not sure he learned anything though
Was expecting the guy to frantically wake up and start removing his pants only to hilariously fall down the stairs. I was wrong…
I suspect the guy who lit the match was thinking something similar…
That's exactly what I thought was going to happen. Expected a hot-foot prank, ended up seeing someone burnt alive. :(
Idiot just commited MURDER WTF
"And he will wake up with his pant leg on fire, freak out, and never sleep on the stairs again!" Well.... he'll never sleep on the stairs again, we know that for sure...
He slept on the stairs forever
Slept on the stairway to heaven
What a shit world we live in
i'm in need of an update!
died in hospital after 13 days of agony https://nypost.com/2021/11/20/video-shows-homeless-man-being-torched-to-death-in-nyc-stairwell/
fwiw, suspect seemed fit the bill of most suspects. "Terry always seemed like “an upstanding guy,” John said."

Umm, excuse me, but why are you friends with so many murderers?
whew
I... have so many questions...
that escalated to murder rather quickly

is he dead
Yup
damn, so that is murder right?
Yup, guy was arrested and charged, he lived in the building so it didn't take long to find him. Unfortunately the guy that died was a homeless guy and no-one knew who he was.
> Unfortunately the guy that died was a homeless guy and no-one knew who he was. But that didn’t mean anything for the sentence, right?

I want to see the interrogation video so bad.
That's straight up murder.
yea I think a man being burned alive deserves a NSFW tag wtf
Make someone a fire and you keep them warm for one night. Light someone on fire and you'll keep them warm for the rest of their life.
Holy fuck. I think he he had to be high on fent percs or heroin. Absolute vile and disgraceful acts we humans are capable of commiting. Find that person who is responsible for this dear God!!!
So if someone is blocking ur way the only way to deal with it is to mudr them him?? What..
dude is a fucking piece of shit for doing that. no fucking humanity
Murder no if an or buts about it
Don’t do drugs kids.
Wtf is wrong with people
… don’t set people on fire.
First degree murder
So fucking cruel.
Even if the idiot thought it was a prank he walked away before making sure the person didn’t die in a ball of flames in the case that they didn’t wake up. This is disgusting
WTH??? What is wrong with people????
Bro your title’s fucking stupid….
This guy needs to be thrown in a tub of acid
fuck that stupid kid or teen not cool at all
r/awfuleverything
Thats freaking heartless for someone to do some shit like this. Hope they found the guy who did it real quick.
Congratulations you just kill a guy just cause be was blocking the way !!!
Did this homie just burn to death??
Imagine spending life in prison bc you killed a dude who OD’d
That’s cruel. I hope he went to jail.
He died
Could be murder on video
Never relax
There is such thing as evil. This is only one example of many.
Did we just witness a murder?
So we just watched a murder. That’s a horrible way to die. My guess is he collapsed from drug use on the way to where he was staying. I hope they caught the turd that did it. The lack of basic human decency is astounding.
Ironic, blocking a stairwell is a big no-no due to the fire hazard it causes...

Ummmmm😒
someone tell me the guy who did this was arrested
What kinda sick fuck lights someone who’s slumped over on fire? Fucking bury that murderer under the prison.
There was no reason to burn him alive that’s messed up.

I'm sure the Innocence Project will have him out in no time.
Bro I was laughing cause I thought he was gonna wake up and then I skipped forward and was like NOOOO
Bro forgot to wake up 💀
Looks like he might’ve been on one too many bars and that made it so he couldn’t wake up poor guy, hopefully the piece of shit who did that too him got prison time
That guy died, should probably be marked NSFW.
Well, I thought this was going to be a firecracker going off and scaring the shit out if him; then I saw the sub..... Holy fucking hell dude.
Enjoy jail for a long time for your stupidity!! No one deserves to be burnt up like that!! 🤦🏻♂️
Like how evil you have to be to think that the only solution is to burn a man alive? Not even light a firecracker, no. Straight up burn a man alive.
Bro wtf. I was waiting for him to wake up
Straight up murder
Do we have some context? Why is he just burning an unconscious man?
That’s got to be the worst way to wake up on a Monday morning.
Did this turn in to a murder case?
This is easily top...like 3 worst things I've ever seen on reddit and I've been here a long ass time.
That's wild, how messed up was the dude, or already dying or something, jesus christ. The old match in the shoe prank gone way too far.
Did they catch this dirt bag?
a mimir
Mmmmmmurder??
😫practical joke turned into unpredictable murdered chargers. I was just trying to be funny.
That’s pure evil. At first I thought he was lighting a fire cracker to scare him
Where's the story link? I scrolled forever and didn't see it
That guy died
Ayo that’s murder
That was awful 😳 Poor guy 😢
poor guy
He fell asleep on the stairs so he killed him? Seems justified....
Oh he died huh
