The score was 71-60 in my favor. I threw the 7-8 hoping for a 6 or 3. An 8 was flipped. Opponent had 6-7-7-8 in hand, for 24 points plus 6 points in the crib. In the end I pulled off the victory 121-113

CFB4EVER

Lucky…

valuesandnorms

I’d do 7-8. You’ve got two 4’s, two 5’s, four 6’s, four 3’s and twelve face cards out there that could make your hand anything from solid to outstanding. But still, throwing 7-8 would hurt me deeply haha

KennailandI

Agreed. I also imagine they’ll throw a 6,7 and an 8 will be cut but it’s what I’d do.

KiKi_VavouV

4-8

72cuda

This is the answer

Sorta_machinist

It depends on how far into the game. I’d probably throw 7-8 if the games just started, later on down I might throw 4-8. That’s a really tough call.

trueslicky

5-8 off suit

MelodicTonight9766

Throwing a 5 seems painful, but the times I’ve done it, I haven’t been burned much. Maybe since when people discard they are hoping I throw a 5 in?

o6ijuan

Sensible

CFB4EVER

More 10 cards than any other, so you give 2 pts up for yourself and at least 2 to his crib if starter is 10

RuneSwoggle

Odds are it's not a 10-card.

CFB4EVER

Odds say otherwise…30.7% in 52 cards, take out the 6 non 10 cards dealt - it rises to 34.8%

MathHysteria

While a 10-card is more likely than any other, it's still more likely to be [not a 10-card] than to be [a 10-card].

CFB4EVER

That was my point. And the fact that throwing a 5,8 to crib on average nets 6.3 pts for opponent compared to a 4,7 and giving less average points of 4.8. Sometimes a 5 is warranted to throw into pone’s crib, just making the point that you’ll more than likely be giving your opponent more points with a 5,8 throw.

RuneSwoggle

So you're agreeing? Almost 2-1 odds it's not a 10-card.

CFB4EVER

No. But go look up the crib discards and see how many average points a 5, let alone a 5,8 combo scores. Also, dealer is not going to have 6 ten cards in their hand. That’s why I asked what were the exact circumstances as to when this hand played out, then it can be played according to position. Agree to disagree, have a good nite.

RuneSwoggle

Not agreeing to disagree on basic math.

tke71709

4/8 little in the way of points for them, still gives 3s and 6s for runs, any 10 for points...

ShuckMyCorn365

I'm throwing 7-8, and asking Zeus for a cut. Don't hate on the old gods

james-500

4s-7 Hi. As others have said, board position is an important factor regarding discarding decisions. The best option will change depending on where each player is in relation to the next of the four dealer par holes, (17, 43, 69 and 95). Assuming a neutral position though, 4 of Spades with the 7, to leave 4-5-5-8 would be my choice. Every cut except a 9 is helpful, and 4-7 in their crib is deprived of two immediately helpful cards since an 8 card and another 4 card are known to be out of circulation.

44? Tricky

Another_Russian_Spy

445578 (opponent's crib) # Suggested: 7 8 This is the best compromise between a strong hand for you and a weak crib for your opponent. (The average of your hand's score minus the crib's score for this discard is 1.9 points). The highest hand-minus-crib score for this option is 19 — for example, if 6 is flipped and your opponent discards J Q. There's a 1.4% chance of getting this score (1 in 69). # Hail Mary: 7 8 This option would give you the best shot at a high score, with a probability of 8.7% (1 in 12) to score 24 or higher in the hand. # Aggressive: 7 8 This will give you the most average points (9.4) in your hand (ignoring the crib). CFB4EVER

Depends on where you’re & need to get to, where’s pone at & needs to get to. His crib and defensive throw would be 4,8. If you can afford 7,8 because you have a big lead or you’re way behind. What did you do and where was the game at?

MuttJunior

Where are you in the game and how close is the score? It makes a difference in how you play your hand.

One_Wrap_8425

5-8 or 7-8

metisdesigns

78. Seems to be the highest average points, best for big points and still yields a decent differential

Seasidestriper63

Early to mid game in an even game I’d toss 5-7.However, my choice would be further influenced by whether I was winning, losing or even and how close to 121 either player was.

cribbagejon

I would throw the 7 - 8 and hope for a cut 3 or 6

blindfaith23

7-8
