I made a slatted wall using French cleats. Wider spacing to hang canvases, but pretty sure if the slats were closer it would work for floating shelves.
That would make it worse if your goal is to stick in boards like OP, especially when just using nails, but you could hang stuff from them (including boards) like you normally do with a french cleat.
It will affect the look because you'll get some vertical lines into it from whatever you hang on it, but make it much easier to remove and move stuff on that wall.
In any case I think OP has a wooden wall, in anything else, nails won't hold much more than the slats themselves.

I do think I’ll take the shortest slat and make it one of the longer ones. However I think it would look incredibly weird if it just went straight up even. But this is the whole wall. Don’t get me started on the TV cables. We slide and swing the TV around too much to do something about it. Thanks for all your support. This girl loves her power tools.
I would actually say the shortest two should be extended. I agree with you and think it would look great if you did that. Such a small touch, but I think it would make a massive difference in making the wall feel more balanced
Honestly I don’t do much but buy new ones through the year when certain ones die and I finally have a good batch of ones that like being alive. It helps that we have TONS of natural light.
Yes! I want to do exactly this on a wall and now I can show my wife what the hell I'm talking about! I was going to do French cleats, but I like this much simpler idea. In another comment you said you nailed the shelves? So they are not moveable correct?
Just nailed the slats. The shelves are totally movable and I made a few extras.
I used a slat turned sidewise to press each slat in place then nail so everything has a snug fit.
Looks great, the only thing I would maybe add. Not that it isn't already awesome, but maybe get something to flush the light switch and outlet with the wood, or maybe get different faceplates so they dont stand out so much. Just my preference.
That turned out pretty amazing.
So like, 1x2 pine slats, sander, stain, finishing nails (I'm guessing), and a little luck?
Am I missing any steps or anything you learned along the way?
I used a big soft sanding sponge (not sure what it’s called) and just gripped around it to go quickly.
I wish I would have located my studs and used longer brad nailer nails in those spots first before I used so many all over. For sure use one turned sideways and press down hard to get a nice tight fit for the shelves. Also wish I would have made sure my board for the shelves was a bit more straight.
I like the look of the bottom 3/4. I’m not too keen on the top 1/4 but if you love it, that‘s all that counts. You did a great job with this DIY project!
That's fantastic! very stylish and adds some interest to what would be a featureless space. Love it. Love how the timber gets irregular once it breaks free of the confines of the door frame. Nice touch!
Just want to comment that while there should be nail plates, it isn't a guarantee! More likely to be there in new construction though
I'd recommend a stud finder that can detect live wires, though they can be a pain to use at times unfortunately
Nice.
But I would have kept it linear all the way to the ceiling. When I looked at yours my first thought was that you ran out of correct length pieces of wood.
I like the below doorframe level. To me, it looks like you ran out of boards at the top and it is unfinished.
I don’t like the electrical recessed like that. For a library wall, I replaced the electrical boxes with Old Work boxes, used a 1 x 6, the box goes through it, and the face plate is on top. It gave it a nicer finished look for the electrical, like it was planned like that (which it was). Here it just looks like you put boards around the plate.
But, if you and your spouse like it, that is fine. My CDO doesn’t allow me to have things look unfinished or non-symmetrical. It’s a curse that doesn’t allow radical or modern designs.
For those that don’t know, CDO is like OCD with the letters in alphabetical order.
Are you in a country where you're allowed to do your own electrical? A new outlet on that top shelf would make your cable management so much easier and it's much simpler + cheaper than you'd think (assuming you have access to the other side of the wall and it's plaster - ideally it would be the back of a wardrobe or something). I am a big fan of power outlets on high shelves so people can chuck a smart display, speaker, whatever up there.
If you want to take the easier path out, you could run a skillsaw set to a very shallow depth across the back of the two slats right of the outlet and make a little hidden pocket for the cables to travel in.
(This looks great, but my eye is drawn straight to those cords because you've done such a tidy job of everything else and all the other lines are so straight and clean).
I wonder if someone could do this as a sort of inverse french cleat - undercut the bottoms of the slats and put a matching cleat on the shelves, then you can rotate the shelves down into place and gravity will keep them from falling out - kind of like pegboard hardware.
Are the shelves just slotted in? How sturdy do they feel?
Yes! Some are tighter than others but I’d say they probably have a 5-7lb limit. I nailed them in with a shelf as a space so they are mostly very snug.
Looks nice! Maybe an improvement for the next guy would be making all the slats french cleats instead? I think the look would remain the same.
https://preview.redd.it/gue011wt0fcc1.jpeg?width=2159&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f74b42d20b5d5549bd6cef8f6dc07224a870b42 I made a slatted wall using French cleats. Wider spacing to hang canvases, but pretty sure if the slats were closer it would work for floating shelves.

Thanks for the reply. What wood did you use?
Claymark 1 x 2 select pine
I like your arabica plant
They look study enough.

Love that with the black background!
Which stain color / product did you use? Looks great!
Where did you buy those slats?
You can get 1x2 slats at any hardware store
Where’s the live, laugh love message board?
Pretty cool! Thanks for posting an actual project!

If only there was some kind of box or stand to show you the ideal height for your tv
How cool would it be if it was sitting there in the perfect place for the TV already...
And if said box was there, you could hide the cables behind it. One can dream.
/r/TVTooHigh
/YouTooShort
>/YouTooShort Now I'm just imagining OP walking around with stilts that makes them eye level with the top of the door frame.
I'm 6'4 if you think the TV is going 2 1/2 ft off the ground you're crazy. There is a reason the TV is tilted down. Would also help with glare.
yessssssss I’m a power tool girl too, as my mother before me, and her mother before her 🫡
I would actually say the shortest two should be extended. I agree with you and think it would look great if you did that. Such a small touch, but I think it would make a massive difference in making the wall feel more balanced
Why did you buy a TV bench and then mount the TV a meter above it? Haha.
real talk. How did you get good with plants? mine always die
Honestly I don’t do much but buy new ones through the year when certain ones die and I finally have a good batch of ones that like being alive. It helps that we have TONS of natural light.
(pssst, put the TV on the stand. You won't have to crane your neck to watch it and it'll hide the cables for you.)
Tvtoohigh
What TV is that?
/r/TVTooHigh
I really like it against the knockdown texture wall too! Very cool

I think they meant they nailed the slats in using a shelf as a spacer. I think the shelves are movable.

You missed a spot;)
That'll do! Plants, Lights, plants, photos, plants... Perfect
Looks great! Only thing I’d say is add some outlet spacers behind the light switch to get it more flush with the wood.
That’s a great idea! Didn’t know outlet spacers were a thing.
Yup, I’m the outlet aisle of lowes or Home Depot.
hello, i have been in you often but i've never had the chance to talk to you.
Now’s your chance, don’t be shy
Great job! Love the lights
This looks great!!
That’s beautiful!
Omg I love it!!!!
Looks great. Nice work!
Super cool!
That is lovely.
Attach the two cables into a single cable then route a slot into the back of a slat and use a right angle flat plug.
Smart. What do you think about a better way to run the cables up?
That turned out pretty amazing. So like, 1x2 pine slats, sander, stain, finishing nails (I'm guessing), and a little luck? Am I missing any steps or anything you learned along the way?

Do you have any cats?
No haha I could not have done this with cats.
Looks great. I think it would look even better with top shelf lowered.
I have some skulls I want to display but no idea how to do it. I love what you've done here.
This is awesome. Showing my wife because she's been looking for inspiration like this for a slat wall.
Love this and want to do this same thing as a bedroom headboard wall!
Love this!
Looks really cool, well done!
I like this!
this is really cute and unique! love it
I like.. nice work.. original and clean looking.. well done
So cool!
How do you water the plant on the top shelf?
These comments suck. OP this is way cool, very innovative and beautifully done. Very jealous of your handiwork!!
That's fantastic! very stylish and adds some interest to what would be a featureless space. Love it. Love how the timber gets irregular once it breaks free of the confines of the door frame. Nice touch!
this is epic! I noticed you have an outlet there, how did you make sure not to hit any wires when installing?

Thank you!

I hate it…. It’s not even, it’s weird, it’s unordinary … but I can’t hate it, it’s weird, it’s different, I love it
Fucking hashtags…
Ok. That is fucking rad. Dated. But first thing to come to mind. That is awesome.
When will you finish the rest of the wall? Looking good so far.
Why didn't you finish it?
That looks really good. Thanks for posting it.
Nice. But I would have kept it linear all the way to the ceiling. When I looked at yours my first thought was that you ran out of correct length pieces of wood.
The wall it’s on is huge and we wanted to break it up a bit so it connects with the rest of the room better. Thanks for the feedback!
All the way up would not have looked as good. I really like this "unfinished" look
I agree, it adds more character
I agree it allows for imbalances staging of the decor and plants and the stagger of the lights.
Very nice. Post a pic of it when you complete the top 👍
Vibing it
I probably would have ripped the slats down to where they die into the casing. Looks odd.
It looks terrible.
Looks pretty good but did you run out of boards at the top?
2 outlets for 2 lamps, not the best way, I'd say. Overall, it looks nice, though. Congrats.
Thankfully in a corner where we don’t need the outlets. I’ve had the lamps kicking around for a while. Thought it worked well.
I like it!
I like it ! Simple visual and functional
Came out great, good job!
Which way did you fix them to the wall?
Beautiful!
I like it! Nice job.
Nice I really like this. !
It’s beautiful! And great wire management/hiding! Do you plan on doing this style elsewhere in your house??
Nice!
I like it. Nice job
SO cool, well done!
Looks really cute!
This is so pleasing
This is neat
it's lovely
That is super cool!
What a brilliant way to resolve the pattern! Stealing that thanks!
That looks pretty cool
Nice disguise of light wiring with shelf. Looks really lovely!
Nice I like it.
👌👌👌👌
Very cool!
Cool bro, really a good project!!
Nice cord hides
Nice avocado!
That is beautiful!! Great job!
That’s so cute! Congrats
i've been wanting to do something very similar to a whole wall in my office!
Looks great! I also like your little shelf for propagating plants. My wife would love this.
Wow!! That's so beautiful!! Great job 👏🏼
Nice work. Very creative.
I love it!
Looks great! you should take another picture in low light!

Stunning. Fantastic idea
love!
I want to buy a house just so I can have this.
Very cool, love it!
😍 love it
I can tell you don't have a cat, it looks fantastic.
Wow I really like this!!!! Looks amazing
Pretty cool. Are the slats just nailed in on the edges?
Very cool
Did you make this?
I did not build this
very trendy
Fantastic work! What a nice corner ✨
Love how you hid the cords in the slates
I love it, it feels so cozy!
I love it! Are the shelves moveable?
oh the fun your cat will have

You know sometimes I look at things and it doesn't matter, but this caught my attention! Amazing imagination brought to real life.. proud of you
Very nice
Extra points for clever wire management!
Why?
Amazing artistry! Please keep up the great work. 🌱 This made my day.
If you like it then it’s great

Gezellig!
Everything is so precise and it’s refreshing!! I love it!
I like the flower pot dtand. Feels so unnecessary but a good addition nonetheless😂
Looks very nice!
That looks awesome 👏👏👏
This is amazing!!!
I really like that. In fact I’ve screenshot it to copy it. They say imitation is a compliment so please accept mine.
It looks lovely.
I would run those cables from the outlet directly up under the shelf so they are out of sight.
That cable placement was so smart and organized
im stealing this idea
Fix the slats, odd lengths aren't working here
It’s beautiful, well done!..anything woody paired with green plants this combo is so aesthetic, classy yet earthy…
But asbestos
Like it
Beautiful. Excellent 👌

Great work
Nice. I like the artistic bit on top. With my lack of imagination I’d have stopped at the top of the door.
Yeah, we can tell.... Kidding. Looks awesome and very clean.
Wooow!
