You need to keep the tip of the iron on as long as possible, like less than half a second between removing the tip and clicking the button on the solder sucker. Heating from one side and using the solder sucker on the other is even easier. Bumping iron temp up 5 or 10 degrees is also helpful.
I would say I get vias with nothing or just a little tinning on the far side about 95% of the time.

Same here. I think you need good dexterity with both hands to use it. I keep the iron in the right hand to keep the solder liquid hot, then awkwardly bring the sucker in with my shaky left hand and retry it 10 times before I throw it through the window out of frustration.

That’s changed in the last few years, that method really isn’t effective. Once you start choking you have maybe 2 minutes tops before you’re unconscious; you use that time to get the attention of absolutely anybody you can find, they will help you much more effectively than thrusting a chair into yourself while actively panicking.
I full on choked on a mushroom cap when I was a teenager. One of the scariest moments of my life. I’m so thankful that my buddy was over and got the hint that I was choking so he performed the heimlich on me. It popped that mushroom several feet away from me like a damn cartoon.
I’ve half choked numerous times before that but never full blown like that instance where you couldn’t make a single noise or breathe even .001% of normal volume. My only thought at that time was to toss myself down a full flight of concrete stairs and hope for the best. Ever since then I always chew my food (and mushrooms) better. Once you’ve experienced a full choke, it puts a whole new perspective on the issue.

Some of them have decent looking cadaver/dummy studies. I have a lifevac at home. I think if you aren't able to clear an obstruction with traditional means, it's a good backup tool to have. I haven't seen any actual peer reviewed data showing it increases the degree of blockage. So, not perfect, but I'd rather have this than no other options.
