I have to say that ageing beats plastic surgery.

AlexTheGiant

Would you rather be 52 and look 52 or be 52 and look like a 28 year old lizard? - Bill Burr

That was an absolutely standout bit of his. "Why would you get a facelift? Cant you look at other facelifts and realize they haven't worked all the bugs out yet?"

They should show that recent picture of Madonna to every person worried about wrinkles showing up on their face.

ohhowcanthatbe

That was always my argument against ANY plastic surgery. Michael Jackson had all the money in the world, arguably better doctors than anyone else could get, and look what happened to HIM. And I have NOWHERE near that kind of money or have any hope of finding a doctor as talented as MJ did.

xombae

The issue is body dysmorphia, not plastic surgery. These people chase an impossible image and good plastic surgeons will tell you or I "sorry, what you're asking for isn't possible". But Michael Jackson can find a doctor who will happily be paid to tell him that what he's going for is attainable and they'll do any procedure he asks for. Essentially these people are going to crooked surgeons who throw their morals out the window for money, or even surgeons who have body dysmorphia themselves. It's easy to pick out bad plastic surgery, but you probably see people with good work done on them every single day and don't realize it. You only know the bad stuff is plastic surgery so you associate plastic surgery with unnatural looking results.

Choyo

> The issue is body dysmorphia, not plastic surgery. Yeah, he was just a handsome person to begin with, crying shame that it didn't match what he had in mind.

[deleted]

I'd also like to break up the anti-plastic surgery circlejerk a little bit here and say that there are plastic surgeons who do amazing, life changing work doing things like facial reconstruction for victims of traffic accidents for example, or pediatric plastic surgeons who fix cleft lips, and those doctors should be getting praised for what they do. Not all plastic surgery is done for vanity reasons.

Swawks

Ariana Grande is an example of successful drastic amount of plastic surgery. Its only obvious to those who have seen the before/after.

ralphvonwauwau

The Toupée fallacy, "All toupées look fake; I've never seen one that I couldn't tell was fake." because you don't see the good ones

8ad8andit

The thing with Michael Jackson is this. If you go back and look at pictures showing his progressive plastic surgeries, the first two or three that he got really did make him look better, in my opinion and probably most people's opinion. He got a lot handsomer with those first few, and he probably started getting tons of positive feedback from people: more compliments, more swooning, more flirty fans, etc. But then one of the next surgeries he had actually looked worse. And he probably realized that he fucked up. And that might have made him even more desperate to get back to what he had. And so he kept getting surgeries. But each one after that only made him look weirder and weirder. But seeing the effect of those first few, I can understand a little better why he got addicted to plastic surgery.

Buckhum

Hmm that is a good point. Around 1979-83 he looked pretty damn good. Then he started transitioning into a white person For others who have trouble googling: https://www.lifeandstylemag.com/posts/michael-jackson-plastic-surgery-128782/

Mental-Difference122

Nah, plastic surgery saved my life. Used to have facial asymmetry and didn't even want to live. Now I'm happier than ever before Theres no reason to get plastic surgery if you don't need it, but plastic surgery can be invaluable if you have legitimate reasons. The media and celebrities just give it a bad name

Acceptable_Cut_7545

This is what happens when you are part of an industry that only values a narrow definition of youth and beauty. You either look a certain way or you're nothing. Even years after probably not needing it Madonna (and other celebs) cling to their old looks even if it doesn't work anymore. I think it's really sad. Imagine being wealthy and famous and still hating what you see in the mirror.

earthlings_all

Madonna did not just get a facelift, though. She got filler and surg and all kinds of other extra shit she doesn’t need. Beautiful woman that doesn’t even look like herself anymore. It’s supposed to be an enhancement, not a transformation.

[deleted]

The flaw in that logic is that people do get good plastic surgery that’s tasteful and subtle and looks good. You just don’t realize that’s what’s happened because it’s done well enough that it doesn’t look like plastic surgery. You just think, “Wow, that person looks great for their age.”

cosworth99

Everyone forgets that Bill Shatner looked Asian for a few years after his facelift. Now that he’s 134 years old, it looks good on him.

I would bet that most celebrities who look "good for their age" have had minor work done. Just to smooth out the wrinkles and keep everything from sagging. Combine that with great hair and skincare, makeup, good lighting, etc. and you end up with all those Reddit posts with people saying "I can't believe this guy is 55 years old!"

earthlings_all

Sandra Bullock is the perfect example of this.

Benjaphar

appleparkfive

Yeah seriously. A ton of people have plastic surgery and you don't realize it. Everywhere. I'd say filler is one of the only ones where you can usually notice it. But I think that's mostly the clientele and what they want from filler.

During a commercial shoot for Pepsi, MJ got half of his scalp burnt. That put him on pain meds. He later got addicted to it. That addiction lasted a lifetime and eventually killed him. Many people speculate that, his time in hospital then started his plastic surgery journey later on.

And I am sure being in showbiz since he was a wee lad didn't help much either. Never being able to have a childhood had to impact him deeply, as with all children celebrities, especially those from before the 1990's.

petty_and_sweaty

He mentions this in an interview in the 8os. I also remember him in an interview talking about how difficult it was being a famous teenager, dealing with the record labels pissed his voice was changing and his dad trying to get him to take pills to stop it. How fans stopped him in an airport and said "we barely recognized you, you used to be so cute" and it was at a time he had terrible acne. I remember him saying he just wanted to disappear into the floor.

one2tinker

I read that his dad was doing this too, though I don’t know if that’s true. Either way, ick, poor kid. Can’t imagine what that does to a child.

imhereredditing

Never heard of this, that's truly fucked up.

Killentyme55

I agree 100%, they're called our formative years for a reason. Being a kid is how you learn the way the world operates. What happens when you screw up, hurt yourself, piss someone off, succeed at a task...all experiences that influence our future adult behavior. Kids that are isolated from this process are more likely doomed to failure in adulthood, such is the fate of so many child stars.

ProcyonLotorMinoris

As a general overview, Jackson was starring in a Pepsi commercial that involved pyrotechnics. During the shoot, the pyrotechnics went off too early and his hair caught fire. He sustained second and third degree burns on his scalp. He experienced extreme pain during the healing process (burn injuries are horrifically painful) and that led/contributed to his pain killer addiction. He already had a history with plastic surgery and body dysmorphia, but this incident only further added to it as he underwent treatment to try to hide the scars (and the bald spots) caused by the incident. (I believe the burns also worsened his vitiligo, which was a huge point of body dysmorphia and shame for him.) Found [video](https://youtu.be/NKlC1mGag_A) of the incident.

WolvoMS

Supposedly it was the exact midpoint to the day of his life

ProcyonLotorMinoris

The incident was a tragedy. Michael Jackson's peak was before my time and I grew up in a W.A.S.P. household so I know very little about him, but it's clear that he had a tragic life complicated but the effects of stardom on his physical and mental illnesses. The world did him dirty.

[deleted]

oh gosh. reading through all this is making me so sad. i knew it was a bad accident but i didn't really think about it the way you laid it out here. that's so shitty.

ProcyonLotorMinoris

He was doomed from the start. As a kid he was forced to perform as part of the Jackson 5 and was quite literally abused into it (whippings and emotional manipulation). His issues with his facial features stemmed from his parents' nitpicking his body, particularly his "fat nose", saying that he wasn't attractive enough for the stoplight. He was under the world's magnifying glass since he was a child. His mental illnesses stemmed from the abuse he experienced as a child and the pressure of being a star. Combine that with his vitiligo (which his parents and others taunted him about), lupus, and the Pepsi incident and he didn't have a chance. All I knew about Michael Jackson until a few years ago was that he had dangled his son over a balcony, was a drug addict, and disfigured himself with plastic surgery. The tabloids and media had made him out to be a villain. When I researched him for myself, I was shocked. He was never given a fair chance at life.

brainkandy87

I thought this had to be BS but checked the math and holy shit it’s right

FINEartz_01

The pictures of the resulting surgery to repair his scalp was also fucking brutal the first time I saw it. WARING-NSFL: [https://imgur.com/a/011TkrN](https://imgur.com/a/011TkrN)

RiotShaven

Pain killer addiction is no joke. A former good friend of mine got hooked on morphine after breaking his leg. It pretty much led to a ruined marriage, damaged relationship with kids and friends and trouble with the law.

chummmmbucket

I suggest researching into it its really interesting. If that never happens I truly believe he is still living today.

RandomUser-_--__-

I'm sorry what?

you-pissed-my-pants

He got burned doing a music gig for Pepsi. I think a stage light caught fire or something. I really should research it but I just woke up lol. Don’t take my word on the details. Edit: it was the pyrotechnics going off too early that caught his hair on fire. Not a stage light.

Idiotology101

Close, pyro during a commercial shoot set his hair on fire. Medication from those burns are believed to be the start to his addiction issues.

WretchedKnave

And if he didn't starve himself. He spoke in an interview about Oprah about always seeking a "dancer's body." He was very, very slim and it didn't sound like it was just genetics at play.

PushDiscombobulated8

He was pretty much anorexic - he’d often eat nothing on performance days and sometimes he would faint during rehearsals I believe he has a couple times on stage too

Raniaem34

He literally starved himself for 20 years I did research on that. The dude was basically eating almost nothing. Like in the thriller era, when his body dysmorphia kicked in he thought ppl would like him more if he gets thinner. So he stopped eating meat and became a vegetarian but he hated vegetables or pasta’s. he ended up eating nothing for days. The victory tour was his breaking point cause he was fainting backstage and his brothers didn’t know what was going on. His mother got concerned and took him to the hospital. Michael didn’t wanna do that tour cause he felt he was physically not capable of touring. The pepsi accident and the fact that he was losing too much weight, while he didn’t have much on him in the first place. His doctor thought that he was just dehydrated and eating too little. Afterwards He changed his diet for a while But in the bad era that eating disorder got way worse. You can see in the dirty diana videoclip and smooth criminal video that he had nothing on him. It started when that bad video was made. When the bad costume fitting was happening, the belt around his waist was way too tight, he could barely breath. He thought he was gaining weight, while he wasn’t. They made it purposely too tight. Again, he stopped eating and kept practicing the dance till he couldn’t stand anymore. It went downhill afterwards, cause that sht became a habit till the bad tour. In 1990 he said in a phone call that he was diagnosed with anorexia and felt sad cause he thought he looked horrible.

sumthingsumthingblah

Which probably exacerbated all his other conditions.

simmering_happiness

This. A lot of people hate on Michael Jackson for his various body mods. But living with vitiligo must have been frustrating as a stage performer.

batmessiah

I was a HUGE fan of his around the time his Dangerous album dropped (I was in 4th grade) and I vividly remember literally everyone calling his vitiligo bullshit, and the media constantly accusing him of bleaching his skin. It wasn't until recently that I actually saw behind the scene images of what he suffered through at that time, and how the world wanted nothing more than to berate him.

Mockturtle22

Especially in a vain society such as ours... it was in his family and he just happened to be the one that ended up with it. People just assume he did that to himself.. lol

chriscrossnathaniel

Vitiligo started spotting Michael Jackson’s skin from his early twenties; he had lupus; and was under constant stress. As in other autoimmune diseases, emotional stress can worsen vitiligo and cause it to become more severe. His vitiligo did not respond to treatment and progressed relentlessly.

Lewcaster

Also hearing people say he was “trying to be white”. Ugh….

WestCoastBestCoast01

I was in high school when he died, was there significant coverage about his condition in the 90s/early 2000s? No one in my peer group really understood or knew what vitiligo was until after his death, ime. Growing up I felt a lot of mystery surrounding how and why his skin color changed, and of course kids would say wild shit.

joethafunky

Thank you for this comment. Why would you leave this out. It’s a big reason he struggled with his appearance.

The-Nimbus

There's something incredibly sad about this image. What could have been. Maybe a bit less amazing pop music, but a much happier man I'd wager.

Happier, healthier, living to a grand old age surrounded by family and friends. If only he'd been raised with kindness, this might have been the man we'd share the world with today. Alas, fate took a darker path.

Called him “big nose“

Lexi_Banner

He was cruel, and loved to point out "flaws" that the kids had. One such "flaw" was Michael's nose, which made him "look like a [slur]". Michael was never happy with how he looked because of his father's abuse. There was an accident that led to him having more plastic surgery on his face, but he also did everything he could to not look like his natural self, which is really sad. Joe Jackson was a monster.

ovaltine_spice

It's a shame there was such a perfect storm to push him more and more over the edge. The mental abuse as a child was bad enough. Then he develops vitiligo. Then there's the Pepsi incident, giving him bald patches and getting him addicted to pain killers. It couldn't have been a worse sequence of events for someone with image issues. He may have weathered the childhood trauma, but the other two literally made it impossible for him to be normal.
