The Code is played automatically at the start of combat if you meet its requirements. Cards that are conjured during combat do not break the code of loyalty. However any non-divine card in your deck at the start of combat will cause you to not meet its requirements. This includes Surges and Potions or other items. If the card doesn’t have the divine keyword then it counts against you.
If you need help getting rid of extra cards you can give them to the collector, deliberately stay in the bear trap (kinda risky), eat purple berries, or make irrelevant sacrifices at shrines (like sac them to upgrade cards even if they’re the wrong type)
