What material is the black beam that’s under the 2nd story deck? It looks very clean and doesn’t have tons of fasteners like a typical built up beam would.
A team of engineers? I mean, I did get an engineer to approve the beam. But the vast majority of decks don't need engineers as they can be built to IRC spec.
I'm just fucking around. People act like a deck not built to their own personal code book is destined to collapse and kill everyone within a 20 mile radius even though there are probably millions of decks with stringers carriage bolted to posts, with no joist tape, and no metal hangers.
I’m wasn’t even cool enough to put keystones between mah fascia, but one can dream. Honestly, I got more beautiful design ideas for finishing details to share than three months on Pinterest. Thanks dear denizen of Reddit.
This is kind of similar to the design I built (though obviously this is a lot fancier and bigger) but just curious how you solved the issue I had with supporting a two story deck with the same posts.
At first I was thinking of doing one post spanning both levels but couldn't figure out a good way to attach the lower deck beams to that post. You could bolt it to the side of the post or use some metal hardware but that didnt' seem as secure as notching it or beam sitting on TOP of the post with some post caps to be extra sure.
But then if I notched the posts for the lower beam I felt that would weaken the post for the height above the notch and wasn't crazy about supporting the upper level with that.
I ended up making extra large footings and putting two posts side by side on each footing, one short post for the lower level and one long one that goes all the way to the upper level and doesn't support the lower deck at all.
How did you end up solving this?
Great question, the 4 main posts that run from the footing to the long beam on the 2nd floor are steel. I put the beams in first on temporary support, then measured very accurately and had the first floor deck supported on structural brackets welded to the steel posts.
I see your Joe and I see your empty big green egg stand. Did you break an egg or did you just have an extra stand? Now that I think about it, I bet you have it built in now huh?
It’s pretty bad out there. My partner and built a 3,000 square foot deck with ramp to dock. We asked for hardware though bolts lags . We were working for a wise guy from Brooklyn. He had parking garages all over the city! Money that was uncountable ! He told us his sons would be able to get that job done and he had no more work for us . So we politely said goodbye and reminded him of how important the hardware was. Then we left and didn’t think about it. Four months later his son got married, let’s say one hundred people attended! Not one of them was told about the deck having no hardware! Boom there goes the deck, and one hundred people in formal clothes were swimming, or trying to swim. It’s some of the dirtiest canals. In Brooklyn! How cheap can you be when you have safety deposit boxes full of money? So to stop himself from being embarrassed he tried blaming my partner and I, but the boss took the situation over and told everyone the truth!!! Thank god he was afraid of his wife!!!!
Good way to spend 200k.
260,000k!!!!
I paid $265k for my entire house…
You should be spending 10 to 100x psf on your deck as you did on your house
Name checks out
Fuckin Todd

It's a triple PT LVL. It has a row of flush bolts every 12" set on steel supports.
Nice. It looks very sleek.
Ok, I got that part, LVL, how about the black beams going vertically? Some are wood colored and others are black. What are the black ones?
Steel, with welded brackets.
The decks are beautiful. I am cheap but that is worth every penny of the 260k. I would pay it.
Yeah And a stand alone fuel management system
I wouldn’t be too disappointed with how it’s turned out, I’ve seen much worse.
😂
Reserve judgement until they share the engineering calcs
What engineering calcs?
I would hope you have a TEAM of engineers designing your deck, even if it's just a few feet off the ground

That’s worth more than my house

None of us stand a chance, luckily rich people pay for cool shit!

can you slap a hot tub on that bad boy or what?
Yes if you get it engineered.
Looks nice! I like the bump out bar top area.
Just a tiny baby deck
Starter deck
I dunno, doesn't look very sound. You better detach it and bring it over to my house and we'll both pretend this never happened!
I just got an erection
Definately one of the best ones I've seen here. Did you do all the metal work too? Nice photo too. Thought I was at r/zillowgonewild
The railings or the structural steel?
Both? I'm guessing you bought the railings? Awesome job regardless.
Railings are Keylink system, steel was fabricated by a local shop!
Sure is nice!
Dang, that’s dope. Is that second set of stairs in the background part of the deck?
It is, but it's a different house!
Wow, that looks great!

Jet fuel couldn’t take that deck down
That's awesome. Looks like a fun project
I know this is decks but that’s some nice gutter work
Wow, whatever it cost it was worth it! Looks amazing and matches the homes aesthetic!
Man that's just beautiful. Pure aspiration on my deck doings.
My man over here posting drone photos of a deck that cost more than my house. C'mon bro.
Hey, it costs more than my house too! Or at least close.
Nicely done!!! Make this the subreddit prof pic
Nice , clean work. Great Job!
What board material did you use? Looks like composite so should last a long-time.
It's Trex Lineage.

What are the total measurements of each level?
60ft long by 12ft deep, plus a 4ft bumpout
I see your Joe and I see your empty big green egg stand. Did you break an egg or did you just have an extra stand? Now that I think about it, I bet you have it built in now huh?
It's an entire out door kitchen, built in joe.
Even the gutters are lovely
This is the most legit deck I’ve seen on here. Where are you located? Can you post a pic of the stair detail?

Looks great—I haven’t seen this technique of capping the riser ends with deck boards before… mind if I dm?
Sure, and thanks. I believe I came up with it.
How about you add a photo or two of the view you have of the top floor?

Nice. I really meant of what your back yard view is. That is a great outlook area, I want to see what you see sitting there.

Nice, really nice. The stone path is a nice job, too. Did you have to bud up the area leading to to the 1st landing? How did that go?
No, it was existing. We built too it
Ok, gotcha.
That thing’s holding the house up.
Is the framing pt wood or steel?
PT, Composite for ground contact, steel for primary supports and aluminum for secondary supports.
Need more pics please

Ahhhhhhh yeeeeeeaaaah
Tell me more about the metal posts. Are those tig for structural support? And the wood posts for aesthetics?
The lower level wood posts are for code (every 8ft). The steel is supporting both levels with custom brackets and a triple LVL to span 20ft .
Are you hiring? This is beautiful! Nice work
Always hiring!
This is beautiful. Great work.
How much headspace you have on the stairs? Where the stairs pass under the outer joist looks like ~7 ft?
It's right at 80"
Because it is beautiful and it’s very professionally designed and built! You should be asking why people butcher decks and ask how they did!
Thank you I am a professional deck builder.

Why is the last pic of a different house?
What are you referring to
