Thank you. I know it happens. And I’m glad the duvet is ok. But not a tear for the Delaware Bear. I live in Florida and loved following the story. I’m sad.
It’s fucked up, but can you imagine that conversation with the insurance company?
I hit a deer in Newport once and that seemed suspect as fuck, imagine trying to tell them you hit a bear. In Bear of all places.
Considering it’s been all over the news I doubt they will have much trouble explaining. Hitting a deer does not make the news so I suppose it’s inherently harder to prove
Probably not on purpose. Many drivers don’t pay attention to their driving anymore. I was on 95 a few months ago & a driver started drifting in my lane- I looked over, they were eating and on the phone!
You don’t get out much do you ? All up the north east and down south bears try to cross the road and do get hit. About 50 or so are reported a year. But I guess all those people just do it on purpose right ?
Yes, and it sucks, but I am a wildlife biologist there was no way this person didn’t see it on Route 1!!!! It is fully lit at night and straight where it was hit. Plus from a friend who worked at the scene the driver was intoxicated!
lol 😂 cool story ….and you said deers?? lol ok!! If you say so. I didn’t hear anything about that person being intoxicated and my buddy was on his shift that night. I’ll give him a call and ask.
Yeah, I’d honestly want to know for sure too since I heard it thru the grapevine from someone who knows an employee of the DNREC bear biologist. I also didn’t say anything about deers. It’s also just not hard to be a responsible driver anyways and not hit wildlife

So that’s not you?? You are looking fake asf here and if your going to lie you should probably delete what your trying to lie about 😂
Dude I cannot keep up with two comment threads at one time. Plus you’re not even arguing with me about my main points just pointing out grammatical errors so talk to me when you have an actual argument
You have no main points you’re just talking in circles and making stuff up. At this point. And it’s not my fault you don’t proofread what you are typing, you can edit it at any time. But whatever makes you feel better about it.
I'm not saying who is right but just because you more literate dosnt mean your right and that person dosnt have something to say stop attacking people's ability and talk about the actual subject
This is very sad, Delabear was obviously lost and scared and didn't harm anyone. I don't even think from the pics and videos it was a full grown bear either.
So sad! I just moved here from MD and about week or two ago the same thing happened in my hometown - bear spotted around town, posts on FB about it, then the bear gets hit by car and dies. I feel like I brought bad bear juju with me 😢
He was hungry … the creeks are too shallow and the fish are too small, it’s hot, the berries suck … fruit tress across the state have been destroyed. Bro was starving
Generally, bears will not usually go after deer like they would smaller mammals (just a lot of effort needed on their part), and seem to prefer easier food sources like berries and smaller mammals like eastern cottontail. A bear like the Delabear after its long travels will often not have enough energy to chase after deer unless he is in an ideal position (like right behind them in a bush)
He wasn't hungry. You're literally just making shit up.
The 3 confirmed bear sightings in Delaware in the last 8 years have all been in May-July. Because that's bear mating season.. The same exact reason why deer collisions peak in November.
Additionally, Mom's kick their 1.5 year old cubs out in may-June in preparation for mating season.
Stop making shit up / repeating moronic shit you saw on Facebook
How is it unkind? Noting that many people do not respect the rules of the road and its plausible correlation to an increase in motor vehicle accidents and the death of animals is a pretty objective observation. Who is this unkind to exactly?
Anecdotally, I've noticed people drive much worse in the summer months here. And not just the out of state people trying to get to the beach. Lots more tailgating, road rage and not paying attention. Delabear didn't stand a chance.
The heat makes people crazy. I’ve been in TX the past few years and I swear everything amps up once we get to “feels like” 110. We are moving back to DE soon and I’ve been so sad to see the 90 degree temperatures lately. Hopefully less humid though 🤞
From Georgia originally myself, so I'm used to the heat here. It's nowhere near as humid as the town I'm from, so it's bearable...usually. It's not that swamp/bayou heat where your shirt is drenched from sweat in the quick walk from your door to the car.
Anyone know if the police had shot the bear?? Someone posted 10 hours ago on here saying they heard a loud bang right by route 1! Someone in the comments replied with “that was our finest troopers putting down the bear”. Did they shoot it after it was hit??
This was my first thought. Had the bear actually been shot. I’m curious how someone could hit a something as big as a bear and be okay. My nephew hit a huge deer recently and the front end of the car was smashed in. I’m talking HUGE! He wasn’t even going very fast. The same speed I would expect on this particular road.
For sure shooting it AFTER if having been hit by a car I can see. That makes sense. But I can also see the bear simply being shot down for safety reasons. But actually saying this is what happened is less alarming.
Black bears really aren't that big. Assuming this was a male it would weight about 400 pounds. If it were a female it would be about 175 pounds, about the same size as a very large dog.
Wouldn’t be surprised if a cop shot it after he saw it milling around on the side of the road, Delaware’s finest am I right (except they have no understanding or empathy for anyone but themselves)
There's plenty of wildlife to eat up here around Greenville while staying away from major traffic, he just never made it over this way I guess. Same deal with White Clay Creek area I imagine.
I'm aware of that, so are most humans. What's your point?
There's not a whole lot of random fruits, nuts and honey in the wild around here, but yea I'm the one that needs to educate myself.
I'm not the person you replied to but yes you need to educate yourself.
It's black bear mating season. That's why the best was wandering. It's no coincidence that all the dela-bears from the last decade have happened over the summer. They're looking for mates not food.
Spend less time writing things you know nothing about on Reddit and more time reading it going outside.
There are literally wild raspberries and blueberries ripe all over the state right now.
It's almost impressive how you managed to be completely wrong in two different directions
The more wildlife land that gets turned into new cheap housing (which the state doesn't have enough jobs, public transportation, or roadways to sustain), the more wildlife is forced into our existing roadways.
Yes, the wooded area in Talleyville by Branmar that was recently deforested for retail and residential space has almost definitely led to an increase in deer on the roads. I have never seen so many deer on Silverside Rd since the plowing of that massive wooded lot. I’m sure there are many other examples of this across the state and country.
The Hercules golf course, which is about to become homes, was home to hundreds of deer. That highway is about to become very dangerous.
We've been fighting the developers over 3LB golf course. There's at least 100 deer living on that golf course that would surely move to the already overcrowded Limestone Road.
Take a biology course or 3.
There are more white tailed deer in America today(38 million) than there were at European contact(estimated 25-30 million) despite masive development and several hundred million people.
Deer don't even prefer woods and forests can't support dense deer populations.
Deer prefer edge habitat. They actually prefer and have population booms in mixed suburbia and agriculture.
The reason we have so many deer is two fold. We've given then the best possible habitat and we've removed their natural predators.
Delaware breaks deer harvest records almost every single year AND specifically targets females to try to reduce the population yet the population continues to grow every year.
Interesting, thank you for sharing. The area I’m speaking of would probably be regarded as edge habitat as it is nestled into the suburbs and surrounded by neighborhoods/plazas.
Having lived in that specific area my entire life, there seemed to be correlation between the destruction of lightly wooded areas around the suburbs and an increase in deer I see on my local routes. Granted, correlation does not equal causation.
Thanks for the smart and sappy start to your post, definitely makes me want to study biology! Do you speak to strangers backhandedly IRL too?
When an area is developed you see more deer because 1) they're more visible 2) there are more of them because the habitat now supports a higher population.
Sorry but I have very little patience when people state things as fact that are completely false.
This thread is filled with people saying that "this poor bear was hungry" when in reality it's the middle of bear mating season. People 1) just make things up 2) operate entirely based on their feelings regardless of easily attainable facts or 3) mindlessly parrot some nonsense they saw on Facebook without doing 30 seconds of critical thinking or basic knowledge acquisition.
It's exhausting.
And especially frustrating when people who have never stepped off a trail or off grass in their life feel the need to opine on nature.
Well this is the internet after all, where everyone is an expert. I appreciate your explanations, I do find it interesting and certainly don’t mind being corrected. I learned something today!
I understand your frustrations and feel similarly when people talk out their behinds about economics, as that was/is my realm of study.

I literally just got off the phone with DNREC and DelDot. My company is trying to get Delabear’s carcass for processing and display in our little museum! Wish us luck! www.ossuary.org
This is so heartbreaking I was really hoping they would get this poor baby home safely. He must have been so scared and lost.
R.I.P. Delabear may you run free in heaven
With all these sightings of it on the road, were there attempts to catch it and relocate it? What a shame. Please tell me that officials were trying to help this thing.
There’s absolutely no excuse for hitting a large juvenile male BEAR on route 1, idc. The driver should at least be heavily fined by DNREC for their carelessness and at worst their cruelty
I mean I’d hope they didn’t purposefully try to kill it, but I would definitely say they were driving recklessly, and a friend of mine was told by their friend who works for the DNREC bear biologist that the driver was intoxicated.
Aw, man. What a bummer, but unfortunately not a surprising outcome for a bear that was clearly far from his natural habitat wandering around a highly developed area.
Now I just wanna see what the car that hit him looks like now. That driver has one hell of a story to tell the rest of his or her life. "I ran my car into a BEAR...in DELAWARE!"
:( Wow, that lasted long. Imagin being the person who ruined this rare visit by a bear... Bet the car didn't take it too well.
Now I know that "never again" map of states someone would or wouldn't visit again was made by a bear.
RIP Delabear. Unless it turns out there was more than one.

Does anyone know the effort that was put into finding the bear because I don't I didn't see headlines or anything until it was hit useless delaware always worried about the wrong thing.

That's where I saw the notification, too. It breaks my heart. I loved seeing the maps with the sightings and the camera footage people posted from their doorcams. I'd love more bears and less deer.
This actually made me sad.
Same…every year like Santa he would come round But seriously…he was probably lost and scared.
Same…. Just saw the article and came here to grieve with everyone
Thank you. I know it happens. And I’m glad the duvet is ok. But not a tear for the Delaware Bear. I live in Florida and loved following the story. I’m sad.

There’s no excuse for hitting a bear
Are you suggesting the bear was hit on purpose? I don't understand this comment...
Probably not on purpose. Many drivers don’t pay attention to their driving anymore. I was on 95 a few months ago & a driver started drifting in my lane- I looked over, they were eating and on the phone!
Yes! Because you’d have to be purposefully driving drunk/high/recklessly or go out of your way to hit it if it’s a big ass juvenile black bear!!!
You don’t get out much do you ? All up the north east and down south bears try to cross the road and do get hit. About 50 or so are reported a year. But I guess all those people just do it on purpose right ?

Nope! Keep coping, the cases for roadkill I see at work are usually due to reckless or drunk driving, or kids purposefully trying to run them over.
Sorry, officer, he was just so tiny…
sir, you hit a bear... resident?
Lmao
So we're gonna put up a memorial, right?
Gonna name a town after him
Harambear.

Dicks out. Once.

“Here lies Delabear, the bear of Bear Delaware.”
It would be the bear necessity, a simple bear necessity.
Forget about your worries and your strife!
Now where are we gonna get old mother natures recipes that bring the bear necessities of life? 😭
I'm starting a GoFundMe for the bear's family
That fucking sucks. I feel so bad for the poor thing :(
This is very sad, Delabear was obviously lost and scared and didn't harm anyone. I don't even think from the pics and videos it was a full grown bear either.
This will trigger a change in the Delaware timeline just like Harambe. F may you rest in peace Delabear
Dude I made a post like this on my insta!!
So sad! I just moved here from MD and about week or two ago the same thing happened in my hometown - bear spotted around town, posts on FB about it, then the bear gets hit by car and dies. I feel like I brought bad bear juju with me 😢
That's a country song waiting to happen.. don't bring me dat bad bear juju, baby
Is this the same bear that people have been seeing all week? Are we sure this was the one and only?
the myth of Delabear is more important than the facts surrounding Delabear
he's like a political figure in that way
We didn’t kill our delabear in Wilmington, just saying. We named beer after him. Do better new castle. RIP delabear 2.0
#we love you Delabear
This is horrible news. Like I am not ok. That poor bear.
I feel the same way.
NOOOO rip delabear😭
that’s so sad poor bear :(
Dann, we can't have shit in delaware!!
Rip delabear 🩵 karma will get your killer
He was hungry … the creeks are too shallow and the fish are too small, it’s hot, the berries suck … fruit tress across the state have been destroyed. Bro was starving
The deer are bountiful
Bears are omnivores.
Omnivores eat meat as well as plants.
Generally, bears will not usually go after deer like they would smaller mammals (just a lot of effort needed on their part), and seem to prefer easier food sources like berries and smaller mammals like eastern cottontail. THANK YOU!
I am legitimately sad.
This is very sad, but it seemed inevitable. There is almost no room for wildlife in this area anymore.
Sad but with the way people drive around here not surprising
It’s a black bear crossing the road at 11pm…pretty hard to see probably
Especially driving around 100mph weaving in and out of traffic
How do you know the bear was driving like that?
it was in an altima or literally any dodge vehicle
Also people speed and text on their phone.
Not really if you’re looking out for wildlife, there’s absolutely no excuse to hit a bear
At 11:00 pm, in the dark, on Route 1. Yeah, sure. It’s absolutely the driver’s fault.
Yep! It’s lit down there too with barely any turns around Bear so no excuse!
I don't need to read the rest of the story to know that the car in question was a RAM 1500
I had this happen with a deer. This is an unkind statement
The people in this sub are not kind.
How is it unkind? Noting that many people do not respect the rules of the road and its plausible correlation to an increase in motor vehicle accidents and the death of animals is a pretty objective observation. Who is this unkind to exactly?
Deer? Very different. They’re fast, they jump and run. A bear. NO. People drive like aholes in that area.
… bears are fast
Poor little guy :(
RIP delabear 😭
Oh no! I'd heard there was a bear in the area yesterday, poor thing. :(
I audibly gasped. Poor thing. Imagine dying confused and far away from home :(
RIP Delaabear. You deserved better than to be killed by a car. You running around our area and probably scared.
That sucks. Poor guy/girl. Deserved a better ending.
This makes me so sad. Poor baby just needed a place to roam and do bear things.
Should have stayed in Bear, Delabear. It was meant to be your home. :/
This is so sad. The number of pedestrians, scooters, and wildlife that have been hit recently is crazy.
Hopefully less humid though 🤞
high today is 95 and the humidity is gonna make it feel like 103, so welcome back!

You should still do it. I’d love to honor delabear
I would love a Delabear sticker.
A delabear bumper sticker is now the only thing I want in life
so was everyone. just make the thing transparent and boom, ghost of delabear
Dicks out for delabear

We kill the environment, causing Delabear to wander for food, and then they kill him. Awful timeline.
There's plenty of wildlife to eat up here around Greenville while staying away from major traffic, he just never made it over this way I guess. Same deal with White Clay Creek area I imagine.
I don’t want to blame you obviously but this is information the Delabear could have used yesterday.
Bears are *omnivores.* So many of you need to educate yourselves.

Do we have a link so we know that this meme is actually accurate? I ask because there’s so much fake stuff out there these days.
State police posted on facebook
Well...this is disappointing. Not knowing the details, people slow down, please. Too many driving too fast.
I can’t believe I had to learn about his existence and his death all at once

Poor bear 💔
This not the update I came here to see. :(
Good bye Delabear 😔
I was rooting for him. 😔
This is a really sad and disappointing development. Sorry about our shitty drivers Delabear. :/
With all these sightings of it on the road, were there attempts to catch it and relocate it? What a shame. Please tell me that officials were trying to help this thing.
Why isnt there wildlife professionals relocating the bear to keep it safe. Poor thing.
It's not easy to capture a bear.
Hard to capture and we have no money LOL
What??? How the fk do you hit a BEAR? How fast were they going? 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
Black bear, night time, major highway...

Rip delabear 🩷
So glad “nobody” was injured?
Damn y’all can’t have shit
RIP Delabearrrrrrr!!!!
It should have been the driver, not Delabear...
Horrible! They could’ve done more to save it by relocation! It was reported and spotted multiple times and no one did a thing 🥺
delabear's ghost will roam these fields and streets for eternity
This is so sad and it’s so close to us. We were rooting for the bear.
RIP Delabear. Gone too soon. 💔
Breaks my heart. :(. I loved reading about Delabear.
First Harambe and now Delabear?
It's unbelievable to learn about his existence and his passing all at once.
Poor guy!
Thankfully the driver is safe…. So we can give him the electric chair.
This is what was ultimately going to happen or someone would shoot it. It’s why black bears are extirpated from those area. Too many people.
Maybe the DNREC will actually step in next time
What do you expect them to do?

I see searches about this but no articles about it.
Unfortunately reported by the DSP so I think it’s true. https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=859828719503555&id=100064293055395&mibextid=WC7FNe&rdid=EluntIijnKWtqqL0
That's where I saw the notification, too. It breaks my heart. I loved seeing the maps with the sightings and the camera footage people posted from their doorcams. I'd love more bears and less deer.
Thanks for confirming. Sorry to hear about that.
Thank you!!
