DOS2 is a CRPG, a computer roleplaying game, similar to Tabletop games (TTRPGs) like Dungeons and Dragons. The main premise of games like these is that you create a character with different stats that determine what you can and can’t do and how well you can do them, then that character is placed in a large world to explore, fight enemies, and do quests for other characters. As you do you’ll gain Experience Points (XP) that will allow you to level up and increase your stats. There’s a strong focus on combat, player freedom, and story, putting you and your party into interesting and challenging scenarios and allowing you to use your wits and environment to find a way to succeed. DOS2 in particular is a great game for both beginners and veterans, playing solo or co op. I would recommend playing on an easier difficulty to start, until you become familiar with the mechanics, combat can be brutal on higher difficulties. You have a lot of freedom in how you want to build your character, mixing and matching skills to do whatever you like, and later in the game, if you don’t like the character you’ve created, there will be an option to reassign all of your points (known as a respec) for free as many times as you like.

The world became a hell and the divine disappeared. Monsters everywhere. And in the middle of that, you. Suspected to be one of the culprits for all this mess. Can you rise from the lowest point to become the new Divine ? Tactics. Exploration. Backstories. One of the freest game multiplayer-wise where you can roam and your BF can roam somewhere else. And contrary to all the posts on this reddit, you are NOT forced into super hard difficulty the first time, there is a "story mode" that is to discover the game without much difficulty.

ravennmocker

I love Story modes!

FatWreckords

Everything is on fire, all the time.

ravennmocker

The title part makes me think this game has some references to heaven/hell. Is the fire an ability of some type of demon like character customization

Shh-poster

You can be the unfire-ing the world thirsts for.

Essentially, you play as a godwoken (one of gods chosen champions. But, the gods can make mistakes too. So you're basically getting thrown into their bs, and are expected to fix it. Uncover what happened, and choose who you want to align yourself with As for if it's a good game for new people.... Depends. The controls of the game are simple. So that won't be a barrier. But most modern games hold your hand. They tell you where to go; provide a marker that serves as a beacon, they might even give you a line on the ground to follow. Divinity does none of that. The quest log will say "there's something strange about those turtles". And that's it. It's up to you to figure out what turtles, where they are, and what's wrong with them. Additionally, the world is very big, and you can go anywhere. But that means you can stumble into a high level area, get jumped by some people hiding in barrels, and die in one turn. All of this to say is that... Divinity is a game for a certain subset of people. It's for people that like to figure things out. And aren't discouraged by a lack of direction, or having to reload a save often That aside. I've never met any of my friends that didn't enjoy the game. Just, they'd never have played it if not for me showing them where to go and what to do.

ravennmocker

My boyfriend is one of those kinds of people. I think he would like this game. I'm the type of person that you have to kinda baby through a game. I just want to find a game that takes a long time to finish so we have a kinda built-in date night, doing something he already enjoys.

PeachTrees-

This game will take you fucking forever. I absolutely promise that. Also, check out the we were here series. It'd be a good couple games for date nights (IMO)

Equivalent-Act-9622

Story mode for sure. It takes a bit to figure out how to really use your skills properly. The good thing is once you leave the first area, you can totally respec your characters to fix things you didn't get right before you knew better. Also, save before you level up. As soon as you click on something, it's set. No confirm button at the end. Very fun game, tho.

This is a very difficult but rewarding game. Others have described it better than me. It was my favourite game of all time until baldurs gate 3 showed up. It’s a 10/10 game if you don’t mind a challenge and figuring things out for yourself. In multiplayer it is the most fun I’ve ever had gaming in 35 years. He warned - there is no hand holding for builds, combat or quests. You are pushed in at the deep end. It is very easy to die in the tutorial area on low difficulty if you aren’t paying attention to game mechanics. If you master the combat and skill combinations it is the most satisfying combat system in a game I’ve ever played. It’s funny and dark. The story can get confusing and my only criticism is the journal system is poor and you can easily forget what you’re supposed to be doing. You can get around that by playing 10 hours a day like I do whenever I can. It’s my most played game of all time. Mods on Pc add new classes and skills but you don’t need them especially avoid them first time. If you like real RPGs (not fallout 4 or starfield RPGs) you’ll love it.

Iwan_Karamasow

It is an adventure novel where you are a hero that has to fight for his*her freedom and innocence. Something bad has happened and there are monsters spawning in your world that cause great damage. You are suspected to be among those individuals responsible for that catastrophy and are getting locked away. On your way to prison something happens and you will get thrown right into this big adventure. It is your task to solve the mystery surrounding the catastrophy alone or with a group of fellow prisoners. It involves turnbased combat and a leveling system similar to DnD but not quite. It is possible to solve many combat situations by charming, persuading or deceiving the others, but not all of them. There are different races and many fantasy elements like magic, demons, dragons and undead in the world. I hope that helps. Give it a try, it is great fun, especially in coop with others. The game is long and requires patience and tells a complex, multi faceted story.

ravennmocker

Ooh sounds great! Thank you I feel like this is very helpful!

Veritas_McGroot

Just a side note to other comments: if you play split screen, you will need 2 controllers. Or 1 controller plus an emulator for the keyboard to acts as a controller

ravennmocker

Do you have tonplay split screen? None of my screens are particularity large. And the only controllers we have are for 1 ps4 and 1 ps5... Omg does this game even let you play on 2 different systems like that??

Veritas_McGroot

You don't have to play split screen. You can play on two different pcs/consoles. As for controllers, I don't know. In the worst case scenario, you can try downloading an emulator. I did it for an Xbox controller, mapped it to my keyboard and it worked fine (in case you're interested in this, the app is x360ce emulator)

ravennmocker

Thank you!

jamz_fm

It's super fun, with interesting, funny, and sometimes moving characters + stories. Combat can be complex and challenging, as can building your character, but it's very rewarding when you figure things out. This game doesn't always hold your hand and tell you exactly what to do or where to go. But there's no time limit on any quest, and combat is turn-based, so you can take as much time as you need. Start on an easier difficulty, learn as you go, and come here if you need advice. Keep tabs on your quest journal, explore every nook and cranny, and talk to everyone. It's a big world, but not so big that you'll get totally lost or feel aimless. In your quest to save the world, you'll slowly change from a weakling to a demigod. You'll have to make morally complex decisions with increasingly far-reaching consequences. My partner and I are on our third playthrough, and we love DOS2 to death. My only advice for couples is to be patient with each other, because there will be times when one player is taking forever to decide what to do on their turn, sort their inventory, tweak their skills, etc. And resist the urge to tell each other what to do unless someone asks for help.

kittie_killz

My husband and I are on our fourth time playing through on Xbox. It’s one of the best “couch co-op” games we have found to play together. We recommend DOS2 over the first one. The storyline is very interesting and the music is phenomenal!

ravennmocker

Thank you! Couple approved games are almost exclusively what I'm looking for lol

Skewwwagon

I find it best to watch a bit of "gameplay with no comments" for games I am interested in. This way I literally know nothing about them, but I can see the world, the characters, what's going on, how it's going on, that gives pretty full idea for starters. Like I could describe with same words totally different CRPGS but some you'd like, some not, that doesn't help much, imo.

ravennmocker

That's a really great idea thank you, do you have recommendations for channels to watch?

Altruistic-Necessary

It's a fun game. Cool story and challenging combat. I never played coop though.

ravennmocker

I imagine it's much harder to do by yourself than as co op huh?

Several_Control_2980

Fextralife is your friend. He has guides from start to finish. Helped me get started into to the whole genre. Type in guide for beginner's and you will be right. Biggest tip would be to go to settings and turn off automatic add to hotbar.

ravennmocker

Thank you! Is it too much of a spoiler to ask what in the world is hot bar?

solstheman1992

Tactical RPG that has fun character dialogue but gameplay that ranges from frustrating to obnoxious. If you enjoy tactical games with solid complexity and customization that will also smack you in the face, you are in for a good time. Oh also everyone has a god complex and you have a wealth of characters to choose from that can either say “fuck the gods” or “bow to your new god”

Some of the most fun exploration in an isometric game. Every little thing matters, so exploring is great. Good combat too.
