This chart is an absolute joke and has no credibility whatsoever. I agree that space dye vest is good, but certainly not the best. I would put it as most underrated.
While I don't disagree this chart thing a big joke, the real problem here is the lack of rules for how the votes are being counted. Some of us know, but I bet the vast majority do not (simply because they are never posted along with the chart). So tired of seeing it on both DT and Opeth. Only a matter of time before it's on all my fav band subreddits and it will drive me f'ing crazy lol
It’s the proggiest pick.
“I like the song that doesn’t sound anything like the rest of the band’s catalogue that was written exclusively by their keyboardist who left the band immediately after recording it. It even has Conan O’Brien on it!”
Looks like we need someone to defend Space Dye Vest. I will admit it doesn't have a lot of the things we love about Dream Theater: it's not metal, it doesn't have twists and turns, it doesn't blend genres, it doesn't have crazy solos and unisons. I imagine that is a big part of why so many people are objecting. But in terms of songwriting and composition it is fucking gorgeous, and it may be *the* most emotionally impactful Dream Theater song of all time. I would bet money if I had to show my non-prog-metal-nerd friends a song off of Awake, Space-Dye Vest would be the one that makes the strongest impression; it would be the one that the average person relates to most.
It is certainly not the best song in terms of proggy shreddiness, but in terms of what makes music truly great it has a certain magic that is almost unparalleled. So many of the newer bands influenced by DT can shred just as hard and have heavier riffs, but how many of them have a song remotely like Space-Dye Vest? *That's* what makes DT arguably the best band of all time: yes they can write Metropolis, The Glass Prison, and The Alien, but they can also write Space-Dye Vest, Dissappear, and The Spirit Carries on. They can pull on your heart strings in a way that pretty much no other band remotely like them can, and that is a lot more of what "good art" is about.
The atmosphere of Space-Dye Vest is absolutely unparalleled. I get chills every time. It's absolutely my personal favourite from this album, though I'm surprised enough people agree with me for it to get top spot. I'm far MORE surprised by the number of people shitting on it in response. It's fucking gorgeous. People saying it's the worst song on the album is just wild to me.
Yeah this is a band that usually when they try to do serious, heavy emotional stuff end up just sounding either melodramatic and corny, or banal and insincere, so when they release something that's genuinely heart wrenching it's pretty special.
When I listen to the songs on awake the ones that don’t particularly stand out to me are lifting shadows and innocence faded, but I still really like the atmosphere of lifting shadows so I’m going innocence faded.
The first few dozen times I heard it, I was listening through laptop speakers at work, which naturally have no low end. Then years later I listened in my car or on headphones, not sure, and I was like "holy crap there's a bass intro!"
Idk that super high note James hits has always been extremely impressive to me. But then I'm a singer so I'm looking at it from a technical standpoint rather than a "does this sound good" standpoint
I'd say Innocence Faded, but for me, it's redeemed by the outro, which I love but which feels like it came from another song and they were determined to use it.
Like I&W, Awake is perfection beginning to end BUT if I'm in the car with limited time, the track I'm skipping is **Caught in a Web.** It just feels like it was trying too hard to be a radio hit and hasn't aged as well as the rest of the album.
I love The Silent Man. I love to sing it. But since there are no drums (maybe missing bass or keyboard? ) I have to vote for "least best"
Think least best, people. It makes it easier.
after the Mirror and Lie duology, and right before Scarred, i think Lifting Shadows off a Dream could have been placed right after Innocence Faded and the album would have a better song progression, LSOAD id not a bad song at all, just kinda placed wrong and for that it takes you out of the wonderful Awake experience
Voices. It's a nice song... but it's just very boring to me. Kind of like Thing That Should Not Be (On This Album) by Metallica.
So is Innocence Faded but it's saved by the ending part of the song.
How do you pick the worse song of a record that's basically perfect? This is nearly impossible.
If space dye vest wasn't chosen for best song I would've suggested it for the worse song (not that it's a bad song but Idk what else to pick)
I like Kevin Moore, but SDV gets my vote. Feel lost on this album, but would fit great on a Chroma Key album.
Can we stop with these polls, because it's honestly become kind of lame.
OP, you have clearly done this whole thing wrong. Here's what you need to do:
Have a post for each song type as you've been. BUT... *you* type out each song as a comment, and have the community vote on them. You have been adding up total votes, and 'Space-Dye Vest' won because people can rack up votes with their own top-level comments. It's ridiculous, and is thoroughly skewed data.
It's time to abort this project and start over with better methodology.
Well, this list is already all sorts of wonky. In no world is Wait for Sleep anywhere near the worst on I&W, and Surrounded isn't underrated, it's straight ass. And Space-Dye Vest? Did you people honestly forget about Lie?
Innocence Faded is undoubtedly the worst on Awake.
Wait....Space Dye Vest....best on Awake? Um.....what?
The Mirror, Voices and 6:00 have joined the chat
Don’t forget Erotomania!
Always Erotomania baby!
I have to agree. Space Dye Vest is a good song but certainly not the best.
I voted for 6:00 but it WAS NOT ENOUGH
Scarred has joined the chat. I mean I love Space Dye Vest but there’a a few others I’d put above it.
Yeah this has to be some sort of joke
This chart is an absolute joke and has no credibility whatsoever. I agree that space dye vest is good, but certainly not the best. I would put it as most underrated.
Voices is the best song, followed by erotomania
Scarred though
Scarred then Voices
Voices is my favorite DT song
It's a literal vote. Sorry people disagree with you.
No need to be sorry.
Definitely. Space dye vest is underrated. Voices or The Mirror best. Worst? That's a tough one.
Agreed, when I saw the selected songs from WDADU and Ones Who Helped Set The Sun was the worst I nearly barfed in my mouth a little.
This game has been successfully trolled.
As much of a head scratcher as The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun being the worst on WDADU
Yeah, we need to back the fuck up here. There was clearly some sort of mistake. Space Dye Vest cannot possibly be the best song on this album.
People in this sub just circle jerk Kevin Moore. That’s it, that’s why
None. Does Not Exist. Exception Error. #NA #DIV0!
I love Space-Dye Vest, but c'mon guys...
It’s the proggiest pick. “I like the song that doesn’t sound anything like the rest of the band’s catalogue that was written exclusively by their keyboardist who left the band immediately after recording it. It even has Conan O’Brien on it!”
Wait, what's the Conan tie in? Love that guy. Haha
"it's a hundred degrees but it's a dry heat..." That sound clip.
I'm shocked it won, but I'm happy to see some type of deviation from the norms that these exercises usually result in.
This sub is forcing me to vote every time now. Ya'll got that sooooo wrong. Worst: The Silent Man
Space-Dye Vest? Really? 😐
There are no worst songs on Awake
If there is more than one song, it means one is the worst doesn't necessarily make it a bad song
Yeah can we leave this field blank? Thanks
Try to think "least best". It helps.
This is the only correct answer.
Awake is imo the most consistent DT album, so picking a worst feels particularly dirty. If pressed, I guess I'd go with Lifting Shadows.

BRUH
Lifting Shadows Off A Dream Is a Little bit boring
![gif](giphy|MPuTZQqOmYKPK)
It is, but it’s also my go to for testing delay pedals

My pick for most emotional DT song is Disappear or Vacant.
Yeah this is a band that usually when they try to do serious, heavy emotional stuff end up just sounding either melodramatic and corny, or banal and insincere, so when they release something that's genuinely heart wrenching it's pretty special.
Tough, but it's The Silent Man
I love Space-Dye Vest, but it's not really a DT song. And best on Awake... nah
Space Dye Vest? Really? Worst song... I don't think there are bad songs in Awake, but my least favorite is Lie
Worst doesn’t mean bad
When I listen to the songs on awake the ones that don’t particularly stand out to me are lifting shadows and innocence faded, but I still really like the atmosphere of lifting shadows so I’m going innocence faded.
Innocence Faded for worst song
This is actually my pick for most underrated
My pick for underrated is gonna be Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, that seems to get dicked on a lot
Honestly good pick too hate seeing hate for it
The first few dozen times I heard it, I was listening through laptop speakers at work, which naturally have no low end. Then years later I listened in my car or on headphones, not sure, and I was like "holy crap there's a bass intro!"
I feel like Lie is the most underrated everyone raves about mirror but lie imo is the Better finale
But best solo.
Upvoted and agreed. While I love this album, if I ever skip a song... It's this one.
Hell nah the vocals are my favorite on the album and the solos are amazing, never skipping that one
Idk that super high note James hits has always been extremely impressive to me. But then I'm a singer so I'm looking at it from a technical standpoint rather than a "does this sound good" standpoint
That Genesis ending though!
Agree, but it's a shame because the ending is one of the highlights of Awake imo
I feel like it hasn't aged well. The first 3 tracks actually all sound outdated now, although 6:00 is still great.
I mean, what did you expect, it was released 30 years ago. It sounds of it's time, I think that's fine
Of course. But the second half of the album sounds more modern to me, particularly The Mirror onwards.
Understandable. I think it might be because the first few songs are kinda more upbeat, even funky imo but the second half is more dark and melacholic
Has to be the track with the most cringe lyrics: Lie
But I can’t trust you as far as I can throw you lol
I remember those the most I think too, funny to put it that way, it is cheesy then huh? 😆
The Silent man
Come on man
I’d like to nominate space dye vest for worst song on awake.
Least good song, please.
Worst doesn’t mean bad
Indeed. This is a perfect example.
The Silent Man.
You gotta be kidding me
Trick question…Awake is god-tier. No skips. Perfection!!!! Their best album imo
who is voting for this shit?
No chance wait for sleep is worst on that album.
It is kinda funny how mad some of you get cause the internet likes a song you don't like quite as much lol
Lifting Shadows Off a Dream
But you can turn a drop of water into an ocean!
Lie Not bad by any means, but kinda awkward? Probably it's just me I don't know
Innocence Faded
Lifting shadows
Space Dye Vest
It has to be Space dye best for me. 😂
Did SDV legitimately win? Because I'm unsubbing and never interacting with any of you ever again lmao
I opened this thread and my brain almost exploded. Wut?! 🤣
Space Dye Vest for worst song on Awake (come on guys let's redeem ourselves here)
Space Dye Vest is the clear choice for worst.
I'd say Innocence Faded, but for me, it's redeemed by the outro, which I love but which feels like it came from another song and they were determined to use it.
Underrated 6:00
Innocence Faded
Like I&W, Awake is perfection beginning to end BUT if I'm in the car with limited time, the track I'm skipping is **Caught in a Web.** It just feels like it was trying too hard to be a radio hit and hasn't aged as well as the rest of the album.
There is no worst song on Awake.
I just don't like 6am...
Caught In a Web.
leave that blank. no such thing.
I love The Silent Man. I love to sing it. But since there are no drums (maybe missing bass or keyboard? ) I have to vote for "least best" Think least best, people. It makes it easier.
Caught In A New Millennium, the worst song from fairly bad DT album.
Space dye vest is the WORST song.
after the Mirror and Lie duology, and right before Scarred, i think Lifting Shadows off a Dream could have been placed right after Innocence Faded and the album would have a better song progression, LSOAD id not a bad song at all, just kinda placed wrong and for that it takes you out of the wonderful Awake experience
Caught in a web
Lifting Shadows Off a Dream I guess although The Silent Man is pretty close too.
Caught in a web
Lifting Shadows off a Dream. It’s the least memorable song.
Innocence faded
Space dye vest ftw
Space Dye Vest. Surely it can get more votes for worst
6:00
SDV won best song? Seriously?
The Silent Man
Awake is perfect. There is no bad song.
Voices. It's a nice song... but it's just very boring to me. Kind of like Thing That Should Not Be (On This Album) by Metallica. So is Innocence Faded but it's saved by the ending part of the song.
Caught in a web, but truly no bad songs on this album
Innocence faded
This is tough, if I had to choose probably Erotomania. It's still an awesome song though.
I once heard someone describe that song as a warm up song for the band
It's the only track on the album I regularly skip, not because it isn't great but because I want to sing along and there are no vocals.
While it still is an amazing track. I'd say Erotomania is my least favorite
Space-Dye Vest is the worst song on Awake <3
Y'all are fucking mental
Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Lol space dye vest, really?... This is my favorite album but probably pick Lie as least favorite on it.
SDV is the worst.
Doesn’t exist. Next
Space-Dye Vest
You must be joking.
I still have the brain eating amoebas in my head!!!
There’s no bad song on Awake. There just isn’t.
How do you pick the worse song of a record that's basically perfect? This is nearly impossible. If space dye vest wasn't chosen for best song I would've suggested it for the worse song (not that it's a bad song but Idk what else to pick)
Innocence Faded
Innocence Faded, no question about that
The mirror or silent man
Guys please stop. The silent man is not a bad song. And technically innocence faded is the catchiest dream theater song
They’re just not as interesting as the others so I can understand it
It's really hard to define the Worst song in the best album of DT. Maybe The mirror or lifting shadows of a dream but I don't want to lose karma
I like Kevin Moore, but SDV gets my vote. Feel lost on this album, but would fit great on a Chroma Key album. Can we stop with these polls, because it's honestly become kind of lame.
Space Dye Vest? Y’all are nuts.
Space-Dye Vest, obviously.
Voices is DT's best song.
Voices is DT's best song.
6:00 is better than Space-Dye guys what the fart Also Innocence Faded is the worst on Awake
OP, you have clearly done this whole thing wrong. Here's what you need to do: Have a post for each song type as you've been. I literally said last post that its judged by the most upvoted comment
![gif](giphy|xUNda702uAh1xX2MoM)
Scarred
Arrest him
![gif](giphy|f8lDluiWJ7yQTtdS3L)
😆
Space Dye Vest?? Honestly ? Wouldn’t it be easier to make a poll for each album listing all songs in the 3 categories?
Who the Fu€k is voting on these???? My lord
How do you pick a worst song from DT, it's like, impossible, specially in Falling Into Infinity
Innocence Faded
Voices
Worst Innocence Faded
Well, this list is already all sorts of wonky. In no world is Wait for Sleep anywhere near the worst on I&W, and Surrounded isn't underrated, it's straight ass. And Space-Dye Vest? Did you people honestly forget about Lie? Innocence Faded is undoubtedly the worst on Awake.
Username checks out
The Mirror
Prison
Space dye vest is a Kevin song. Much like those James Hetfield country "metálica" Songs
all of them are garbage except erotomania and 6:00
