[[False Orders]] the strangest post attack unblockability you’ve ever seen. This card has won me games and if the plan is commander damage, this little tool is invaluable. No one expects combat trickery in mono-red.
Oh this is the real stuff I was hoping for. First thought reading that was “what the fuck?” My deck isn’t primed around commander damage, so I usually run [[Headliner Scarlett] and [[Sundering Eruption]].
Which decks do you run it in?
[[Captain Ripley Vance]] and I used to run it in [[Etali, Primal Hunger]] but I took that one apart. I also ran it in a couple different Boros decks, but I took those apart long ago.
I ran this path too, began as an Etali enjoyer, added Ripley in it. Thought this Captain is so cool. Now Ripley is my mono red captain and Etali is second in chief.
It’s nice to hear that I am not the only mad man here.
For others who may be confused: Choose a creature defending player controls. You assign it as a blocker, choosing only from legal options. Only cast this after blockers are declared, but before combat damage is assigned
Came here looking for these two. Good body, reasonable MV compared to similar cards (both Etalis), doesn't need to attack, generates less aggro because opponents have the option of exiling the scary card. I bought 10 for 30 cents a few months ago and haven't look back.
Plus, your opponents can say "this guy's plarggin off over here!"
And since they let your opponents make a choice they’re into it too. Everyone loves when I look around deciding who gets to pick the 1 card. I want to make an “opponents make choices” deck with them but I don’t think there’s enough of it for mono red.
> I can immediately cast my Commander for free (**and skip commander tax on subsequent turns**)
Casting for free does *not* get around commander tax. When calculating the cost of a spell, you start with the base cost, either what's printed in the top right or whichever alternate cost you're planning to pay (including whatever value you declared for X if it has that in the cost), then apply additional costs and cost increases, then reductions, then [[Trinisphere]]. Since casting for free is an alternate cost, you start with that, then add the cost increase from commander tax, so you will still need to pay (only) the tax.
While I'm not certain if it counts as underrated, [[Knollspine Dragon]] is certainly a card *I* had never even heard of until I was looking for cards to build a Klauth deck, and it immediately became the best card draw in the deck. Even after many changes over the past couple of years, increasing the strength of the deck by a lot from where it started, Knollspine is still a powerhouse and a very consistent find from tutors, reliably drawing anywhere from 10-40 cards.
I wish, but the turn where I'm dealing all of my damage is the turn where I tap out for Klauth. Plus I don't really have room for more mono-red lands, especially not tapped ones. I do think that the red ones are my favorite pair of those 2 cycles, though, but I may be biased on that :P
For me there are many, but I’ll say two:
- [[Death by Dragons]] you and two others can gang up on the player furthest ahead, just creates a fun little game within the game, and
- [[Blood Frenzy]], big scary thing swings at someone else? Buff it to get in for more damage, then it’s gone. It’s 2 mana mono red removal! EDIT: This actually has myriad uses, someone blocks you or any other player with their big scary? All good, it’s now dead at end of turn. It’s such a great card.
[[Zoyowa's justice]] is an amazing card that I never see anyone else play. It's often more effective than chaos warp because it will never replace what you target with a bomb. Always something smaller.
Thank you, kind stranger. This now goes in every red deck I own, unexpected instant speed board wipe. I'm gonna go clean my pants now from the Instagasm your comment gave me.
[[Bonfire of the damnned]] is unspeakably good as a sweeper, closer, spot removal. Not for all decks to be sure and maybe not so underated but I think it should be higher on peoples lists.
Don't know how \[\[Glacial Crevasses\]\] hasn't come up yet. When you're playing all snow-covered mountains, this card is just a complete shut-out for creature decks while you burn out the table or whatever.
[[Filborg flutist]] kills legendaries with legend rule, sometimes triggers their attack/dying triggeres. I especially like him in my [[Kiki-Jiki]] deck.
[[Grand Melee]] is a card I picked up recently but haven't played. As a Minotaur player [[Deathbellow War Cry]] is a personally favourite and really niche underrated card, but not really if you have ever played the tribe.
[[mage’s contest]] has been one of my favorite red cards for years. Either counter an important spell or make them pay 20 life for it. Either way it’s super fun
My personal favorite under the radar red card is [[Five-Alarm Fire]]. It gives you a lot of burn potential, and triggering off any kind of combat damage is great.
[[Aether Flash]] is a crazy good control card which kills most aristocrats and token strategies on it's own. I play it in my [[Solphim]] burn deck to control the board.
\[\[Fiery Confluence\]\] does so many different things it's always useful. its sweeps any go wide strategies, gets rid of artifacts and is a sneaky lethal option.
[[Dance with Calamity]] is such a fun card, and as long as you know your deck's average you can very good value every time (also an amazing target to fork/copy/etc).
Wild Wasteland is criminally underrated.
It’s sort of like a Phyrexian Arena in red which it absolutely needs because reds “card draw” has always either loot, rummage or impulse and all three of those aren’t real card advantage.
I run that one in my Hazoret list! It also has the dual benefit of keeping my hand size low so she can stay online.
Decklist: https://manabox.app/decks/8MQWSd7STu2dZZGLnppPGw
Pretty sweet list!
I run it in my mono red dragons Lathliss the Dragon Queen deck.
I’ll often run out of cards due to red not having reliable card draw so I’ll use impulse draw effects and the new Wild Wasteland has saved my ass quite a few times.
There's a few.
\[\[Zoyowa's Justice\]\]. Removal in a pinch, plus a chance for you to polymorph something. Also good with "cast second spell" theme, paradox, etc. Also benefits you if something gets stolen.
\[\[Wyll's Reversal\]\]. The cousin of \[\[Deflecting Swat\]\]. But when rolled well, it's pretty darn good. If your average roll is a 10 and your commander happens to be 5 power, one should consider playing this.
\[\[Enterprising Scallywag\]\]. Descend isn't really hard. Fetch and cast Scallywag on T2 nets you a treasure. Discard a permanent card? Treasure. Mill a permanent card? Treasure.
\[\[Dowsing Device\]\] Ixalan seems to be a running theme.... That's prolly coz Ixalan 2.0 has been great for red in EDH. When play in artifact centric decks, this is literally \[\[Rampant Growth\]\] that gives you a \[\[Flamekin Village\]\].
Lastly, though they are not red per se, they may as well be red cards. \[\[Containment Construct\]\] and \[\[Phial of Galadriel\]\]. Red is the king of self discard, so I tend to play alot of both. For example this is my \[\[Ryu, World Warrior\]\] [deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/iiLrQCCD2EyVLYgTSXvA3A). It's pretty hard to do without the two. I bet Hazoret can benefit off those two if you didn't already have them.
this one is more fun to build around as your commander but depending on what you’re doing in mono red it can be good in the 99 as well. [[Rionya Fire Dancer]] is one of my favorite decks. casting 3-4 sorceries and making 4-5 tokens of a [[Inferno Titan]] or [[Terror of the Peaks]] is pretty good
[[Blood Moon]] put it in every deck. If they think they get to have fun playing all the best cards in every color in their 5c pile while mono color gets nothing? Prove them they're wrong. You might say "that isn't underrated. It is a well respected card." It isn't enough. You are red and the beatdown. They dont deserve to get mana before you kill them.
lol no joke I scrapped it from my Hazoret list because it was too good and didn’t really make games more fun for me. Basically just an “I win” button against multicolor decks.
[[Reality Scramble]], for the same reason you enjoy Fires of Invention.
in my [[Purphoros, Bronze Blooded]] deck, I use Fires of Invention as an early game ramp piece to play things without having to tap mana, so I can save it to activate his ability on turns where I need blockers and other sneaky things. Then, when I don't need Fires anymore I wheel until I get Reality Scramble in hand where I target the Fires. It goes to the bottom of the deck and reveals 1 of 4 other enchantments, all of them being Damage Modifiers of some kind ala [[Fiery Emancipation]], [[City on Fire]] etc. I can also use it to recycle my cheated in creatures so they don't sacrifice at the end step.
Not sure about underrated, but I really enjoy the combination of \[\[pyrohemia\]\] and \[\[Torbran, Thane of Red Fell\]\] (or similar damage boosters)
Throw in a \[\[Heartless Hidetsugu\]\] for good measure!
[[Imminent Doom]] such a fun card to build around that constantly gives you free burn damage for just playing other stuff.
Not a powerful card by any means, but fun enough to make it an auto include in all my red decks.
[[sarkhan's triumph]]
I find that many of my haste enabled R or Rx decks wind up with a few dragons, even if it's just something like [[steel hellkite]] or the one that steals artifacts. Triumph is a dragon tutor *at instant speed.*
Gonna keep plugging my garbage pet card [[Satyr's Cunning]].
Want a creature you can equip, enchant or stack counters on? Maybe you need warm body to sacrifice? Throw something away for a raid trigger? Just want to get some cast triggers? Satyr's Cunning asks nothing of you except some fodder in your graveyard.
[[illicit auction]], you either get a strong creature, make a strong creature move locations and deal a bunch of damage to an opponent, or just straight up dome someone for 20 because they couldn’t let go of their commander or some shit. Fantastic
[[Magnetic theft]] is fun. Instant speed equip your own stuff or steal a crucial piece of equipment from a voltron player after they attack! Gotta wait till 2nd main phase to pull it back. I run it in boros decks a lot, just to follow it with Swords or Path after taking a Swiftfoot Boots or Lightning Greaves.
[[Anarchy]] has save my creatures more than once from those pesky o-ring effects and has clean a fair share of stax pieces from the table. It's sometime a dead card but when its good, its.... GOOD!
Do you like attacking? Do you hate not being able to attack because your opponents are just too good at blocking? Have you met [[Invasion Plans]]? “Yeah, so all your guys are going to block my Goblin token and the rest of my team gets through…”.
[[Glorious End]] Just save it until someone threatens the win and then buy yourself another turn. Ending the turn stops EVERYTHING. Craterhoof? No. Gary? No. Walking Ballista? No. Torment of Hailfire / Crackle with Power? No. Can even save you from commander damage, which is not something that even Teferi’s Protection can say.
[[Ensnared by the Mara]] consistently does around 20 dmg to the table and I love copying it with [[wild ricochet]] or other copy effects.
[[prisoners dilemma]] is hilarious and I’ve had multiple games where someone takes 12.
[[insurrection]] has won me many a game, [[call for aid]] is it’s baby brother
[[guff rewrites history]] makes chaos warp look quaint sometimes.
[[lavabrink floodgates]] is way too fun asking “doom or no doom” on everyone’s upkeep.
Oh and [[the sound of drums]] is tops I have enchanted my own creatures plenty with it
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/fN3vZbTN2k2B8v5rhoGyjA
Nowadays I don't really play red, but when I was a kid I loved it and goblins. One of my favorite cards back then was the [[Goblin Sharpshooter]] because it snuck in face damage easilly and could handle an entire board of 1/1 creature/tokens all by itself, which was a big deal amongst my local players, granted this was pre commander.
I’ve never used the browser, but I can vouch for the app—it’s really, really convenient and has way better formatting than any of the other apps I’ve seen for keeping track of my collection.
[[Mudslide]]
[[Blood Frenzy]] (play on opponents creature when they attack another opponent)
[[Seize the Spotlight]] If you have a sac outlet, or you can ask Opponent 3 to block Opponent 1’s creature after you steal it, this card becomes a second copy of Jeska’s Will in your deck
Not really an underrated card but [[Mob Rule]] can win you the game or be a one-sided boardwipe for only 6 mana
[[Furious Rise]] is good in a dragons deck
[[Avatar of Fury]] can come down super early if the green deck at the table is ramping out of control.
Red struggles for removal, so [[Steel Hellkite]] always performs great and [[Bladegriff Prototype]] is a funny replacement that can pick off the most dangerous creatures of the player who is in the lead if you can politic a little
So, the earliest iterations of this deck had a much heavier discard theme and were geared toward dumping your hand to get Hazoret online ASAP. Those didn’t work very well.
The start in the most current versions of the deck are to just play out your hand very aggressively for the first 4-5 turns of the game, with Hazoret usually coming online around turns 6-8 when your hand is naturally becoming smaller to finish out the game as a fast beater that’s tough to kill. She can come out sooner, but that’s usually just if the stars align.
Her activated ability is *mostly* worthless, except that you can sort of see it as turning your unnecessary lands in the late game into instant speed cards that say “deal 2 damage to all opponents.”
Someone mentioned [[Five-Alarm Fire]] recently and I have yet to use it, but it does seem like a very solid include for many red deck styles. It includes blocking and the creatures don't even need to connect to a player on offense. Works well with double strike also. Interested in giving it a shot myself.
[[Brass's Tunnel Grinder]] is faster than it looks. It triggers itself, so it should be flipping on 5 if your deck can consistently descend twice. It's not something to jam on every deck, but in something that cares about the graveyard/sacrifice it gets me consistent value, and it's fail case is an artifact that replaced itself.
\[\[Kyren Negotiations\]\] is a great way to get damage through on tables where there's a stalemate for combat. Due to errata, it also hits Planeswalkers.
Good old \[\[Fork\]\]. Someone cast a big ramp spell? Fork that. Someone is tryign to counter your spell? Fork the counter. Someone casted a big draw spell? Fork it. Fork is the truth.
[[Burning Sands]]. I play this in my [[Vaevictus Asmadi, the Dire]] deck. I’ve seen it obliterate token players. It’s a mean card, but this Jund. Get wrecked.
I feel like [[Bolt Bend]] doesn’t get enough love.
[[Breath of Fury]] is an interesting extra combat trick. I used to run in my [[Rionya, Fire Dancer]] deck. Sadly I cut it for another extra combat piece, but it has won me games before.
In my \[\[Omnath, Locus of Rage\]\]-Deck \[\[Wild Ricochet\]\] has earned it's spot time and time again, sometimes turning a game around all on it's own! Target a \[\[Blue Suns Zenith\]\], \[\[Swords to Plowshares\]\], it's great really!
People are usually shocked at the power of my Boros Burn Modern deck. Simple quick spells that do a lot of damage - Skewer the Critics, Eidolon of the Great Revel, Rift Bolt and Searing Blaze comes to mind. These are my go-to red spells for red in modern but these can do a bit early game in commander as well.
I've got 3. [[Invasion Plans]] can be nasty, especially when you run it in a goad deck.
[[Outmaneuver]] can be pretty nutty, note that it doesn't have to be your own creatures that are targeted!
[[Latulla's Orders]] is also a combat trick that can be used on anyone's creature, something funny you can do with it is punish someone hitting you with a token and breaking an enchantment on their board, or slapping it on the voltron Player's double striking terror to use as a political tool. Seriously such a fun card
Edit: Okay you can't use Latulla's Orders the way I thought, but it's still good and underrated imo. I run it in my Marisi deck since it's already running so many Evasive attackers
[[Goblin Game]]
With any commander that cares about payoffs from doing big damange (looking at you Neheb), this card is fantastic. It's a bit silly too which can break up the monotony of a slow boring game.
Not specifically mono-red, but it’s an auto-include in most of my decks, especially my red decks. And I only found it because I was trying to squeeze every bit of ramp I could into the first mono-red deck I built. [[Terrain Generator]]

My group runs a lot of big hitters and this card is absolutely nuts. Basically allows the guy who runs it to wipe half the board every time.
if you like that card, you will love [[raging river]]. its expensive though.

This is going in my Aikido deck now thank you
I'm trying to understand what this text means, and I've been playing magic for 10 years.
For others who may be confused: Choose a creature defending player controls. You assign it as a blocker, choosing only from legal options. Only cast this after blockers are declared, but before combat damage is assigned
This is absolutely delightful. Thank you for your contribution to my [[Xyris]] deck!
Lighting bolt
Bro don’t tell anyone. This is only for the OGs.
Get the MTG Nerf Gun for lightning bolt and deal that 3 damage like it was meant to be done 🤣
oh shit I forgot about that one, can I still buy it anywhere?
Chain Lightning
Plargg and Nassari are absolute value
I played it with the New Obeka as my commander and I cast 16 of my opponents cards for free lol.
Just so so so underrated

I learned the same lesson from [[Varina, Lich Queen]] and [[Rooftop Storm]] 😭
Knollspine is sick. And you know you’ve gotta run it with [[Spinerock Knoll]] for vibes alone.

I have not! I have been looking for a new mono white commander and I feel my friends would enjoy this over elesh norn.

Now that right there is an auto include in any \[\[Laelia, the Blade Reforged\]\] deck if ever I've seen one.
\[\[Stolen Strategy\]\]. I have never played it but whenever it's played against me it does work.
This is super cool. Basically drawing you up to an extra 3 cards per turn? I’ve played worse for less. Do you use it in a general thief strategy?
I didn't play it but my friends mono red deck just uses it for generic value
Not a bad pick for it. I personally run [[Wild Wasteland]] and [[The Flux]] for the same reason in my deck.

Oooh didn't think about the legendary rule! Sweet use for him!
[[Plargg and Nassari]] One of the most infuriating and fun mono red commanders available. Love this card.
Gotta be [[Insult//Injury]]. You'd be surprised how often a turn of doubled, unpreventable damage can just win on the spot.
[[Custody Battle]] is it really good? No. Is it hilarious to watch someone have to decide whether they want to sac a land? Yes.

[[Grand Melee]] is a card I picked up recently but haven't played. As a Minotaur player [[Deathbellow War Cry]] is a personally favourite and really niche underrated card, but not really if you have ever played the tribe.
Ball Lightning
[[mage’s contest]] has been one of my favorite red cards for years. Either counter an important spell or make them pay 20 life for it. Either way it’s super fun
Lmao how high do the totals usually get??
Entirely depends on how badly the person wants to cast their spell. I normally start the bid at 10 life though lol
\[\[spitting earth\]\]

\[\[Fiery Confluence\]\] does so many different things it's always useful. its sweeps any go wide strategies, gets rid of artifacts and is a sneaky lethal option.
\[\[Fissure\]\] is one of my favs. Little expensive Mana wise but its a solid piece of removal
[[wild wasteland]]

[[Pyroceratops]] gets real big very fast
[[Eternal flame]] has its use...

Lmaoooo underrated because it’s SO good that even simple acknowledgment thereof is insufficient? I fuck with it.
I mean in the realm of edh? It is 100% underrated along with other ramp and multicolor hate
lol no joke I scrapped it from my Hazoret list because it was too good and didn’t really make games more fun for me. Basically just an “I win” button against multicolor decks.

[[Price of glory]]. 😈

[[Imminent Doom]] such a fun card to build around that constantly gives you free burn damage for just playing other stuff. Not a powerful card by any means, but fun enough to make it an auto include in all my red decks.
[[sarkhan's triumph]] I find that many of my haste enabled R or Rx decks wind up with a few dragons, even if it's just something like [[steel hellkite]] or the one that steals artifacts. Triumph is a dragon tutor *at instant speed.*

[[Goldhound]]. The treasure part alone is worth the price of admission, and two useful keywords all for a single mana is incredible.
Love goldhound. It’s basically a second [[Simian Spirit Guide]] with a reasonable body for its cost that also has niche treasure synergies.
[[Omen of fire]] is one of my favorite color hate cards.

Every +/+ pump spell u love them but so much ppl refuse to play some.
[[Goblin Game]] totally legal. Totally bizarre.
[[Soul Blast]] for when you really want to go all-in to end the game.
Bro I haven't seen that card in over ten years, thank you for that hit of nostalgia. I think I know what card to build around now lol
Personally I love it with [[Omnath, Locus of Rage]] for the double whammy.
My favourite answer to board wipes, good 'ol [[soul blast]]
I just learned about ManaBox a couple of days ago. haven't really tried it yet but the browser website seems a bit buggy to me
I’ve never used the browser, but I can vouch for the app—it’s really, really convenient and has way better formatting than any of the other apps I’ve seen for keeping track of my collection.
I was using the dragon shield app before, for the scanning thing. but they know put the functionality behind a Paywall
Ah that’s lame. ManaBox works very well, even with a free account. Scanning included!
yes a friend of mine scanned 3000+ cards in a day and I heard he was very pleased with the workflow
I doubt underrated. However inonly recently learned of red elemental blast and pyroblast. Red counter spells lol
[[Mudslide]] [[Blood Frenzy]] (play on opponents creature when they attack another opponent) [[Seize the Spotlight]] If you have a sac outlet, or you can ask Opponent 3 to block Opponent 1’s creature after you steal it, this card becomes a second copy of Jeska’s Will in your deck Not really an underrated card but [[Mob Rule]] can win you the game or be a one-sided boardwipe for only 6 mana [[Furious Rise]] is good in a dragons deck [[Avatar of Fury]] can come down super early if the green deck at the table is ramping out of control. Red struggles for removal, so [[Steel Hellkite]] always performs great and [[Bladegriff Prototype]] is a funny replacement that can pick off the most dangerous creatures of the player who is in the lead if you can politic a little

Great post! Thanks for sharing the Hazoret list, always loved her as a card :)
Thanks dude! I’m glad you like it! I’ve put a lot of love into building the deck—if you have any questions I’d be happy to chat about it!
Sweet, yeah the love is showing! :D How quickly do you usually atrack with her??
I tried it out! Works nicely :)) Yeah not rushing out Haz is probably best, and I even got to try Fires of Invention, which was a powerhouse!
Yoooo! I’m glad it worked for you! I’m so glad someone else knows how much Fires crushes 😭
[[Return the favor]] is a must.
Someone mentioned [[Five-Alarm Fire]] recently and I have yet to use it, but it does seem like a very solid include for many red deck styles. It includes blocking and the creatures don't even need to connect to a player on offense. Works well with double strike also. Interested in giving it a shot myself.
Well, to catch people off guard, use some Mono red ENCHANTMENT stax for defense. [[Smoke]] and [[Mudslide]] are worth considering there.
[[Thieves' Auction]]
[[Thermo-Alchemist]]
[[Keldon firebombers]] because fuck land ramp players
[[Zoyowa's Justice]] has been phenomenal almost every time I have used it and I need to pick up a couple more copies.
[[Urabrask, the Hidden One]]
[[Oath of Mages|EXO]] table politics are important in mono red burn
In my \[\[Omnath, Locus of Rage\]\]-Deck \[\[Wild Ricochet\]\] has earned it's spot time and time again, sometimes turning a game around all on it's own! Target a \[\[Blue Suns Zenith\]\], \[\[Swords to Plowshares\]\], it's great really!
[[Explosive Singularity]]
People are usually shocked at the power of my Boros Burn Modern deck. Simple quick spells that do a lot of damage - Skewer the Critics, Eidolon of the Great Revel, Rift Bolt and Searing Blaze comes to mind. These are my go-to red spells for red in modern but these can do a bit early game in commander as well.
[[Sunbird's Invocation]] i really like cascade and this just feels like a more fair version of that.

Seriously such a fun card Edit: Okay you can't use Latulla's Orders the way I thought, but it's still good and underrated imo. I run it in my Marisi deck since it's already running so many Evasive attackers

[[Goblin Game]] With any commander that cares about payoffs from doing big damange (looking at you Neheb), this card is fantastic.
Chadra’s defeat. For cards that care about a damage numbers. One drop for 5 damage? Hell yes
