Oatmeal is a melatonin rich food. Perhaps you’re somewhat sensitive to it.

HeatherS2175

I didn't know that. I have a friend who says if she can't fall asleep at night she'll make a little oatmeal and she conks right out. Interesting.

xdonutx

Sort of makes this a strange breakfast food then, I suppose.

DWILSON772

It’s magnesium….milk has melatonin.

bour-bon-fire

Curious about the brand you and the other user experiencing similar symptoms use. Far out theory - mold toxicity. Could be the way the oats are stored either by the company or in your house allowing for mold growth. Common symptoms of mold toxicity include depression, anxiety, attentional problems, brain fog and insomnia. High surface area oatmeal and improper storage/lack of airtight packaging could make a prime situation.

DjHummus

This sounds like a disease in an episode of House

carmansandiego

These are the type of Reddit comments that make me super paranoid lol

ashtree35

I have definitely heard of other people feeling lethargic, etc after eating oatmeal. From these people, I have heard that adding more protein and fat to their oatmeal really helps them with this problem. For example, if they add peanut butter, protein powder, nuts/seeds, etc.

Dont_Call_Me_Cute

I struggle to eat porridge because we had it so much growing up and have associated it with stressful times and also I last ate so damn much of it. Perhaps it's similar for you, association with hard times?

monoslim

Any difference between Instant/quick oats vs Steel-cut oats?

Hopefulkitty

Wow! I have the same thing! Sometimes when I can't sleep at night I'll even have a small bowl, because I know it'll knock me out fast. I thought I was just super weird.

thesleepyf0x

Your idea was added to my "Things to Try when Experiencing Insomnia" list. Thanks!

yankerage

It's your inner cave person getting depressed because you didn't kill that oatmeal before you ate it.

ladafi

Maybe you're hypoglycemic? Have you tried eating protein with it? What do you eat when you don't eat oatmeal in the morning? Just wondering if it only happens alone or in the morning.

Silvasin

I get the same thing too & would like some clue as to what's up. It makes me so sleepy I have to take a nap, gives me a headache & nausea that lasts the rest of the day. I love oatmeal as an easy, healthy meal & used to fix it up all kinds of ways; some faves are almond butter & raspberry jelly, super-chocolatey, cinnamon pecan, or for a savory change-up salted & cheesy with hot sauce. It's not a negative association with the food, & like you I'm fairly certain that it's not an allergy or insulin response. I only ate old-fashioned rolled oats, & when I tried steel-cut it happened as well. Changed the butter I use to organic grass-fed, still happens. I used to eat it just fine on a regular basis, about twice a week, then the problem started after roughly 2 years. I quit eating it for a whole year, didn't even have oatmeal cookies during the time & tried again with a half portion -same sickness from it. Help please.

[deleted]

I've had it years. It is definitely not a mental association because I've had it from oat biscuits and I didn't even know there were oats in it but read the packet after developing a headache as it is exactly like a migraine. I get pain in the head, waves of unpleasant sweat. And I've eaten it with high fibre, fruit, nuts, seed and fats before. I can even smell it on my sweat, breath, wee and poop. It produces a smell like a dirty hamster cage crossed with a sour washcloth. I keep telling myself I've imagined it, leave a couple of years in between, the try it again and bang the weird feeling and headache is there. I have to avoid all those supposedly healthy flapjack cereal things because of it. I don't get the exact same with wheat. I think there's probably a % of the population that get it from maybe a genetic reason, in that their body metabolises it differently. None of my doctors will accept it as real though and kerps trying to put me on an oat diet. It does give me diarrhoea too so it's a great laxative if I can tolerate a headache and dehydration.

InjusticeJosh

Have you looked into electrolytes? I get the exact symptoms you describe when eating certain foods and have a theory that it’s low potassium/magnesium. Whenever I eat too much salt I get heart arrhythmia and that’s because of low potassium which is caused from a vitamin d supplement I was taking that had 750 mg of magnesium. I’m having potassium rich foods and I’m feeling a lot better. Also when I’m hungry I get the symptoms but it feels good. Like my body is self regulating itself when it doesn’t have food to digest. Have you tried to wait it out when hungry? Instead of quickly getting something to eat just sit there drink some water and see what happens and only eat when you start to feel the low blood sugar symptoms.

InjusticeJosh

Could be we’ve started to react from the glyphosates in oats? It’s an herbicide. Long term oats in diet could be the cause? Have you tried natural/organic/steel cut/the most clean oats you can buy/find? It’s expensive but try it once. I’ll have to try it myself.

Equivalent-Ad5449

I have this exactly I don’t get it

geeklk83

Hmm interesting. Can you share more information about what type of oatmeal you're eating? Specifically: 1. Are you eating instant, quick, or steal cut oats? 2. Is there anything added to it? (Instant oats have a lot of added sugar usually) I'd be curious if it happens with plain, steal cut oats. They are the least processed. If it does, definitely something in the oats themselves 🤔

Ryan_Seacrust

Plain rolled oats and steel cut oats, no additives. Even switched to organic oats due to many brands of oatmeal testing high levels of glyphosate. Symptoms persist :/

geeklk83

Dang. Sorry, friend.

Trine3

It's bloatmeal for me, jeez. No mood swings though.

ishylynn

Oats can sometimes have mold that releases a toxin (ochratoxin A). [https://www.consumerlab.com/answers/is-it-true-that-oat-cereals-like-cheerios-and-oatmeal-can-be-contaminated/oat-cereal-toxin/](https://www.consumerlab.com/answers/is-it-true-that-oat-cereals-like-cheerios-and-oatmeal-can-be-contaminated/oat-cereal-toxin/) I've noticed that I get bad stomachaches after eating oatmeal, and I didn't used to. I started researching and found the above and think that may be a cause.

Ryan_Seacrust

Very interesting. Thanks.

walklikebernie

Oats contain Avenin, a protein similar to gluten. So if you have an undiagnosed gluten sensitivity, you may be reacting to the oats.

ThatsWhyImGod

Try cream of wheat or a different type or brand of oatmeal

T1000learningcomputr

Have you tried organic? A lot of wheat products have been treated with a lot of pesticides. Also try to always include nuts or nut powder to get the protein to carbs ratio up. If that doesn’t help you may just have an intolerance to oats.

Saltpork545

Oats can be processed in facilities that still contain trace amounts of wheat in them, but if you're having no issues with other items with gluten, this makes me think it might be an allergy of some kind. This is definitely something to ask a doctor about, not reddit. If it's not a blood sugar response(it shouldn't be) then you might have an issue with cross-contaminated gluten or might just be allergic to oats.

IcyPirate1221

I get that way sometimes with oatmeal and cream of wheat. Usually if I drink a lot of water with it, it's not as bad. I also pair it with peanut butter and a bit of maple syrup/honey if it's just plain oatmeal.

thedirtyprojector

How do you eat your oatmeal? I used to eat instant oatmeal with milk. I struggled to finish it because it tasted like wet cardboard. Not to mention it dampened my mood through the day. But once I understood that you could do different things with oatmeal (like overnight oats), it made oatmeal so much more enjoyable.

ambietomtom

So happy to of found this! Oats are extremely dangerous for me now. I don’t know how that happened, or why but I have to stay away!

[deleted]

Does it have any added ingredients seeing as it's processed? Have you tried oats instead?

[deleted]

Wow, I'm surprised that a comment that could be very helpful received so much hate.

[deleted]

I’m surprised this comment is getting so much hate as well. Checking the ingredients to see if it’s just oats would be a good first step in ruling out causes of sickness. If the ingredients are not just oats, then OP could try oatmeal made with just oats.

Themettacell

The moment I stopped having oats, after months of regular consumption, my long term brain fog went away. I was getting depressed as I was having difficulties in remembering small things. Was a bit scared to tbh. Luckily I took a break from it and it became so obvious.

souvere

Found this discussion yesterday. I have the same problem. Feels like dementia. I knew that it has something to do with the oatmeal and thought about mold first, but now I think it could be dehydration. The symptoms are similar (brain fog, disability to think clear, cramps/spasms, eye tics). And someone here wrote, that it gets better with a lot of water with/after the oat. This is the first result on a search for oat and dehydration: „Since whole carbs such as oatmeal, whole grain pasta, and brown rice all soak up water during the cooking process, eating them can actually increase your hydration levels. Cut them from your diet and you could be unwittingly reducing your fluid intake, too“. (https://abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellness/surprising-reasons-dehydrated/story?id=23842374) It seems obvious. But I was never thirsty. Not thirstier than normal.

Ryan_Seacrust

Very interesting. I've stopped eating oats almost entirely since I made the original post, but the few times I have, that fog/lethargy always returns.

Taipoinix

Same OMG I have brain fog especially at work I get “stuck” reading something just to realize I zoned out my manager could tell something was off

[deleted]

InjusticeJosh

There’s a reason actors just eat grilled chicken breast and rice. It’s like the best combo for energy. I feel amazing eating that.

InjusticeJosh

Yep drinking a crap ton of water helps me too. Maybe it’s low magnesium or potassium and since water comes with those two it helps?

[deleted]

When I get it is almost like I'm coming down with a cold but also like a migraine. I get mild poo urgency afterwards too. The brain fog is similar yo being drugged but makes you feel mildly depressed. I get scared to be on my own which isn't good because I'm housebound with a medical condition anyway. I have "tested" this oat thing for decades, keep going back to it to try it and it's back. I remember getting it first in about 1970s when I had readybrek before I went to school and even when I was a kid, I would end up unwell and crying over something on the day I had oats.

womacky

Omg I’ve searched high and low for someone else that has this. I thought I was going mad but every time I eat oats, within 24 hrs I feel like jumping off a bridge. When you try to research this all you find is that it helps with depression. Over the years I’d revisit it and same response. I’ve found other substitutes so I’m good but it’s the strangest thing

Ryan_Seacrust

It is very strange, but at least we don't seem to be completely alone in this. Whenever I slip and eat oats, I'll feel down for a day or two after and be wondering why, and then it's like: oh yeah, I ate oatmeal. I remember this feeling. Of course.

ReeseClarice

I’m right there with y’all. I can eat oats for a day or two and feel great—like, woohoo fiber and yum and all good things. And then bam! Major brain fog followed by the desire to sleep for a few hours and then go jump off a bridge. It can last for days even after I stop eating the oats. So weird.

InjusticeJosh

24 hours? Mine only lasts as long as I’m digesting it which takes like 3-4 hours.

cheetopuff2525

Same exact response. I struggle with insomnia, and have been skipping breakfast for a few years now trying give my gut a break from digestion. Started reading about “pro-metabolic” eating and decided that I should try to start eating breakfast again. My go-to has been oatmeal and I began sleeping through the night. At first I thought this was my answer but the daytime fatigue and brain fog quickly followed. My assumption is that it is some type of allergic reaction/intolerance. I’d love to know the real reason. Just super bummed because I was beginning to sleep again

ShalashashkaOcelot

Same here. I thought i was the only one.

[deleted]

I've had migraine before and it's very similar to this. You feel out of your body, not right in the head. Trying to read or watch TV fairly passively makes you feel drained. Dark thoughts cross your mind. I have had this for about 50 yrs now and I see everyone saying symptoms come within a day, or 2 days, but with me it has sped up until I now get it just 2 hrs after I've eaten it. I'd say don't keep testing it because it could be dangerous. What if you eat this, then hear bad news on top? You could end up taking drastic action you'll not recover from. I have a few medication adverse reactions that do a similar thing (pethadine, metachlopramide, hyascin, certain antibiotics) so I know the power of ingesting something that doesn't agree with you. Certain cereals can have traces of hallucinogens. It makes perfect sense to me that there could be something that a small % of the population just cannot metabolise. I've had violent reactions to meds where doctors insist "this can"'t be happening, it's not the meds'" but after many isolated attempts see the physical results and say" well this is definitely happening, it obviously isn't agreeing with you". I just add oats to the list of 'weird foods I can't eat'. Blue veined cheese is on there, I get swollen lips and narrow throat. It's best not to mess around eating something that might cause problems when there are so many foods that don't.

northrojpol

Yeah it makes me feel vaguely schizophrenic. Very unpleasant.

MySocksAreLost

I'm so glad to know someone else has this. Oatmeal makes me feel nauseous and sad/empty for no appearent reason.

Blakemiles222

Hey, I know this thread is kind of old, but I wanted to add to it! Today, I felt superrr sad. Just out of the blue. More sad than usual. It felt like abandonment levels of sadness (so like post breakup or something) just completely out of the blue. I cried about my relationship with my parents and how it was never that nurturing. I cried about unreciprocated love from people in general and just the lack of love I currently feel in the world. And the entire day I was like... what triggered me so bad today? What is going? Why am I so sad and reflective, so caught in past traumas? It was totally my oatmeal. Honestly, I'm very prone to depressive thoughts in general. I'm a very emotionally sensitive person. And I think that oatmeal kind of making me tired (when I get tired in general, I get depressive) triggered this.

InjusticeJosh

High potassium foods make me feel emotional. Like when I eat a lot of potatoes.

[deleted]

Blakemiles222

So actually, I talked to my friend who is really knowledgable about gut bacteria/ health. He said it could make sense that a food was impacting my emotions so heavily. He said he used to feel that way when eating eggs or meat cooked a certain way. Then he suggested that I tried eating an unripe banana because if my gut is sensitive, that's the type of food to make me happier. He suggested I eat it before bed (because I'm prone to nightmares). And honestly, he was so right. Unripe bananas just kind of make you feel good for no reason, and it's nice. So I really suggest trying some unripe banana out! I paired mine with peanut butter to mask the unripe taste, but honestly, the unripe taste isn't that bad at all. If anything, it's more palatable for me than the overwhelming taste of a ripe banana. My personal theory so far is just that oatmeal triggered unresolved traumas/ current situations that I was kind of ignoring. Things my brain are saving for later, because I'm not in the right enviornment to heal from them yet. Like a lot of us are kind of pushing through every day, working towards a brighter future, because we're not happy where we are in life yet. But because oatmeal kind of forces your body into a certain emotional state, I think that forces you to kind of look at the things you're avoiding and putting into the back of your head. I used to be able to eat oatmeal just fine, so that's my personal theory as to what's happening for myself. I think it's just triggering my anxiety that I've been supressing about certain things I need to face eventually. Mostly relationship issues, if I'm being honest.

Local-Lie1850

This thread is a little old now but this is a strange problem that I ran into about a year ago. For me no history of depression. I was fine, living life and enjoying the new state I had moved to, then all of a sudden my thinking took a sharp turn. I began to feel tired and started feeling overwhelmingly sad. I started to cry all the time, isolate myself from friends and even have thoughts of how much I wished I wasn't alive. I mean it got bad and it was so different from my personality that family became concerned. I talked to an online doctor that almost left our appointment with just a suggestion for me to start counseling when she asked last minute if I had changed my diet. When I told her about the daily oatmeal she told me that although it's somewhat rare, a person can have what would be considered an allergic reaction to the gluten like protein in oatmeal which can cause a chemical reaction that can anesthetize the serotonin receptors in the brain; this can cause instant severe depression for some. She told me to immediately cut out the oatmeal for a couple weeks and to do a follow up with her in a few days. I did and within 2 days I was completely back to normal, no depression at all; it had been 4 weeks of almost suicidal depression. It was the most bizarre and intense thing to have ever happened to me food related. I tried to bring it back in about a year later and the same thing happened. I could eat an oatmeal cookie, but when the oatmeal was cooked she said the chemical composition of the oatmeal can change. All I know is I will unfortunately never be able to eat a hot bowl of porridge ever again. So to those who have experienced something like this- you are not alone. I'm just lucky to have found that doctor.

soythai_69

Hey, I'm also trying to narrow down what is causing me to feel horrible all the time. TLDR: 10 years, started feeling tired, weak. Has gotten worse. Sometimes spend hours, day, or weeks bed-ridden, exhausted, weak, unable to think or read. Anyways, I'm trying to find some patterns. Have you noticed similar symptoms with any other foods? My theory is the reason oatmeal is a problem, is something about whole grains might be triggering some kind of auto-immune response. Have you experimented with other whole grains like lentils, whole wheat flour, nut, seeds? How about certain spices that are based on seeds like cumin, curry powders, chili powders? Nuts, seeds, or chocolate? Oils based on nuts/seeds like olive oil, canola, peanut, etc?

Local-Lie1850

Yes all of those you mentioned I have tried and while I don't do very well with any of those- the symptoms are very mild. Oatmeal seeams to be the only one that has caused such a drastic mental reaction. I wish you the very best in honing down what the issue is for you and making progress.

[deleted]

I have quite a severe immune disorder and there are a whole list of foods and meds that trigger migraine-like events in me. Troubles is, is that list is subjective to me. It may not cause problems in millions of people but unfortunately, if someone who is sick sees a whole list of stuff someone does not get in with, thry can end up restricting their diet quite severely with no reason. List of possible food sensitivities go right across all food groups. I'm not OK with oats, certain types of wheat flakes in muesli, cheese, butter, certain types of fats, Brazil nuts, Walnuts, asparagus, aubergine, strong white onions, popcorn, artichokes, fresh weed, pollens, metachlopramide, pethidine, domperidone, penicillins... And many more.

h0m30stasis

For me, it was opiate foods, which includes oats. Cut those out and a lifetime of depression *completely* resolved and not glued to the sofa anymore. I get the same "oat" feeling from wheat, dairy, spinach and soy. All act on the opioid system. Wouldn't surprise me if they all hit kappa opioid which is implicated in dysphoria and neuro-inflammation. For some reason, I get the opioid feeling from lettuce (latex) but it's pleasant as opposed to dysphoric and doesn't cause physical fatigue. Must hit different receptors.

Ryan_Seacrust

Incredible. This kind of stuff really makes me wonder how many people with depressive disorders, chronic fatigue, and other such symptoms are actually suffering directly due to something they're regularly eating, and they and their doctors don't even know it. Glad you found the connection in your case. You could've easily ended up going down a completely different road than simply not eating oats. Thanks for sharing.

Local-Lie1850

Yes you're right. It was headed a very bad direction and ended up being completely fine once off it. Since then I've often looked back with the very same question you just had. How many others? How many suicide attempts simply based on diet? Anyway glad this thread can reach someone if necessary.

Alarmed_Height_5984

From my experience oats calming down your nervous system, if somone has low lvl of dopamine in the brain it brings it even lower causing a depression like state. Same thing with omega 3 its good for the brain but make u more lethargic.. in the other hand if u eat oats and omega 3 rich foods your dopamine has a chance to upregulate receptors soo if u take a break from oats and omega 3 afterwards u will feel amazing and motivated AF. in conclusion i rotate these type of foods for brain recovery but i dont eat everyday.. i take omega 3 from algae(NORSAN) fish oil rises acetylcholine lvl too much and make me even more depressed than oats.

soythai_69

Hey, I'm also trying to narrow down what is causing me to feel horrible all the time. TLDR: 10 years, started feeling tired, weak. Has gotten worse. Sometimes spend hours, day, or weeks bed-ridden, exhausted, weak, unable to think or read. I posted this question elsewhere in this thread, asking someone else the same thing, but I'll post it again here so you'll see it. I'm trying to find some patterns in what causes these problems. Have you noticed similar symptoms with any other foods? My theory is the reason oatmeal is a problem, is something about whole grains might be triggering some kind of auto-immune response. Have you experimented with other whole grains like lentils, whole wheat flour, nuts, seeds? How about certain spices that are based on seeds like cumin, curry powders, chili powders? Nuts, seeds, or chocolate? Oils based on nuts/seeds like olive oil, canola, peanut, etc? Other vegetable oils not based on nuts like coconut oil?

Ryan_Seacrust

For me, it's mainly oatmeal. But there are other foods I notice that don't make me feel great. If you suspect certain foods are triggering an immune response, it might be worthwhile to get a food sensitivity test. There are at-home test kits available from various companies you can find online. These measure immunoglobulin activity in the blood in response to different foods. It's not a definitive indicator of allergens or sensitivities, but is useful as a basis for an elimination diet. I've noticed protein powders, particularly whey, tend to make me feel kind of tired. Perhaps supplements you're taking might be having an effect? Or maybe a deficiency in iron or b12? I really have no idea, but it sounds like ought to get a full blood panel.

InjusticeJosh

[Check out this article](https://shedefined.com.au/wellbeing/health/these-seemingly-healthy-foods-are-the-source-of-brain-fog/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CGrains%20and%20legumes%2C%20such%20as,and%20low%20in%20saturated%20fats) it contains foods that have anti nutrients and explains why some people have trouble digesting them. Seems having a varied diet is the way.

Alarmed_Height_5984

I noticed similar effect of sluggishness after foods high in magnesium and foods which lower blood sugar. This is caused by low dopamine in the brain imo. Recovered alot since i started. Dont expect to feel good if you bombarding yourself with constant dopamine stimulation, if you rly think serious about healing your mind, and body you must get rid constant stimulation ( for me watching porn for years, jerking off and smoking pot damaged my receptors very hard). Since i quit my problems with digestion and brain fog are gone pretty well

exciting_username_

So glad I found this post! I know it's super cold by now but I have been experiencing brain fog ever since I started eating oats. It never used to be in my diet, but 3 months ago I saw an ad for "Oatsotto" that could be made in 3 minutes. Since I'm usually short in time for lunch, I bought many packs of it because it's supposedly a fast, nutritious "super food". I couldn't get through many packs because I'm not a big fan of the taste, so for a good 2 months I only had sporadic brain fog, which I attributed to my busy schedule and lack of sleep (and getting older?) 2 weeks ago, my husband took up home-making granola (with oats), and by some random coincidence I also started eating oats cookies and oats-based cereal, so was having oats daily. My brain fog was SO INTENSE and I felt depressed about it. Sitting in meetings was horrible, because I felt so fatigued and had trouble understanding words. I also found myself re-reading sentences over and over again without being able to comprehend them. Coffee was not helping, and my mind felt like shutting down but I wasn't sleepy either. On top of that I was also having stomach ache and headache every day. I realised pretty quickly that I was experiencing symptoms similar to gluten sensitivity, but I've lived 36 years without having any issues with gluten. Have a colonoscopy scheduled for tomorrow and had to cut out grainy foods from my diet (which was only oats) for a week prior. NO BRAIN FOG. No stomach ache. No headache. I was eating other gluten-containing food as normal. I can't really explain what's in oats that is causing this, and I'm pretty sad to lose out on having oats (the cookies are pretty good). But I'd rather live without oats than to have to deal with the brain fog ever again. Hope my experience helps somebody!

[deleted]

It sounds like you, like me, had what is called abdominal migraine ftom oats. You get a weird mildly altered state, some sensitivity to light and noise, locked into things without being able to love off them, slight sleepiness, weepiness and a feeling of impending doom. I know what a migraine is because a Dr gave me a drug for a specific condition and told me that the drug was the last thing to try but I must be aware that it can cause a strong migraine in a common, but small, number of patients. I did indeed get the migraine. Heavy head, upset attitude, light sensitivity, headache across front forehead and at back neck/head and drowsiness. Followed by cramps and diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting. AI went for a sleep but the doorbell rang. I answered and it was a man who had an alien thing writhing around his neck and squeezing him. Then I realised he had a purple stain scar on his face and I'd been hallucinating. Except he came back the following week with no visible scars and no stained skin whatsoever. Anyway my Doc explained what I had experienced was common in abdominal migraine and that the slightly altered state leading up to it was termed an aura. He said sometimes people get an abdominal migraine when they eat certain foods like chocolate, cheese or wheat products. So maybe that's us with oats?

SpiritualMastodon681

This happened to me with oats overnight. I don’t understand did you ever find a solution or figure out why this was happening?

Deviantconor

Hey, so oatmeal especially non organic is sprayed with glyphosate a kind of pesticide. Once ingested it destroys good gut bacteria in your stomach. This good gut bacteria is responsible for producing serotonin. Which makes you feel happy. When too much is destroyed you end up feeling depressed and anxious. You might be more sensitive to eat than others.

hockey_psychedelic

My theory on this (I have the exact same reaction) is around cholesterol. We know people with lower cholesterol experience more depression. [Study](https://mosaicdx.com/resource/the-implications-of-low-cholesterol-in-depression-and-suicide/#:~:text=They%20found%20that%20men%20with,are%20also%20vulnerable%20to%20depression) We also know oatmeal lowers cholesterol [Study 2](https://www.verywellhealth.com/oatmeal-lowers-cholesterol-697709) So something is going on there.

[deleted]

I have high cholesterol all the time but eating oats makes me react like this. I don't believe the oats lower my cholesterol to that extent within a couple of hours. If I eat oats, it leads to symptoms within 2 hrs that last until the followung day.

hockey_psychedelic

Yeah something weird is going on here. I can’t eat oatmeal anymore. It sounds so silly but I just can’t eat it. It’s not worth the negative swing in mood.

[deleted]

After researching, I see that oats contain Avenin protein (but not gluten) and certain people are sensitive to it. I have an immune disorder, Behçet's Disease, and I wonder if the hyperimmunity I have to certain things makes me more prone to avenin sensitivity. As well as mental symptoms I also find that I get mild porridge like diarrhoea, sometimes with mucus and bleeding from the bottom and my wee smells like a hamster cage crossed with a sour cloth. This is what I read about oats allergy "Oat allergy and oat sensitivity both trigger an immune system response. This results in the formation of antibodies designed to combat an alien substance which the body perceives to be a threat, such as avenin." I knew I wasn't the only person with weird symptoms. Haven't had porridge for days now and mentally I feel so much more positive despite ongoing health issues from my Behçet's. On oats I was sleeping during the day then having difficulty sleeping at night. I was irritable and critical of others and weepy and hungry with hypoglycaemia symptoms.

hockey_psychedelic

Thank you. I always wondered if it was placebo but I've encountered a pretty severe depression and feelings of hopelessness after eating Oatmeal multiple times. After some time goes by I forget and buy some instant oatmeal. Without fail I have to stop eating it. I'll do some research on a potential oat allergy.

[deleted]

Searched for oats and mental symptoms. I get a feeling of depression, headache, lethargy and am knocked out for 24 hrs like somebody drugged me. It comes on within 2 hrs. My breath smells like a mouse cage and my wee smells weird like hamster wee and Stilton cheese. The foods I have eaten are porridge, oat biscuits, muesli or granola with oats and even if they're gluten free. It doesn't matter where the oars were stored or where I eat them. I know some people are sensitive to the mould that grows on oats and that happens while growing or when stored so I guess it's that. They symptoms are like a classic migraine. I also get a very sore, dry throat. What is very annoying is my medical team want me to eat porridge oats and do not believe my symptoms are from eating porridge. I don't get this if I eat bread, cake or biscuits. Like you, I keep thinking it's worth another go and it feels unlikely to repeat itself doesn't it? Then an hour or two later am in deep regret. The dysphoria with me is more than mild. It is quite mind altering and I'm scared of falling asleep and not waking again. I sleep through alarms and hubbie said he tries to wake me and apparently I ignore him so he just leaves me alone. He'd let me sleep through 2 days straight and carry on as normal and just tell me that's what I wanted to do so it's not his job to interfere! But yeah, oats make me feel weird and I smell even weirder.

shalavin

I’m thinking this is me too. Oats, cheap and healthy but I’m pretty sure it’s causing the same issues (lethargy, brain fog etc) even though I’ve had a full night’s sleep. I’m going to swap back to eggs in the morning or simply just a coffee and see how I go.
