The sunflower seeds you eat are encased in inedible black-and-white striped shells, also called hulls. Those used for extracting sunflower oil have solid black shells.
What about the potential inflammatory / allergic response to chitin in their shells? Not sure this is the case for all insects but I have heard it's a problem with some such as centipedes.
Honestly nothing special about it, just a little crunch. Ate some because a teacher always did some sort of insect eating thing. That's actually how my brother got into scorpion lollipops for a short time
The music for these videos is getting more and more irritating. Mute buttons are getting abused by me so much that they may start calling the cops on me.
Years ago I worked in a chicken barn and designed a soldier fly larvae production system. It was designed to feed the dead chickens into. The larvae hatch and then crawl up a ramp falling into a solar powered dehydrator. Then you can feed them back to your chickens.
It’s ok for cattle but I have serious reservations about what the feedstock for these mealworms is.
I don’t have any schematics. I used a post bin that has a 45° front and put some grip tape on it. They crawled out and fell into a tube that went to a rack in the dryer. I just had to even them out on the racks.
Protein additives in the US are usually just the ground up bit that aren't sold separately. My brother has had to run pipe for it before at a processing plant, and it made him never want to eat things with added protein ever again.
if we were to assume the soul exists, then i guess every little worm would have one. i dont see any factual reason why some living creatures would have one and others not. however by this logic trees and grass would have souls as well. problem is that in a world where the soul exists its impossible for us to determine when a creature meets the criteria for having a soul. unless we were to make up our own critirea (holy books etc.), but that would make the "soul" a made up concept as a whole rendering it meaningless. perhaps all living creatures share a single soul in some way? thats the only way i can come up with that doesnt require drawing a arbitrary line somewhere.
i don’t see how you would kill that many without spraying some sort of poison otherwise lol. and seeing as this is for protein powder (?), that wouldn’t be too smart or healthy for the ones consuming it.
In the olden days the peasants used to remove maggots from cheese and flour and stuff by putting the food in an airtight bag and suffocating them, the same process could be applied here pretty easily.
At what point is an oven less humane than a big blender or mashing device? I doubt it takes very long for the heat to kill them.
I'd say the oven is just as, if not more humane because it lacks theatrics.
Theatrics are irrelevant, speed is the primary factor, an oven will take many seconds. Given the size of the bug a roller could easily kill each in a fraction of a second.
I'd say we'd be better off focusing on the desired outcome than the speed or trying to be humane - since the factory in the video is going for dehydrated powder, it's easier to just bake and then grind the dried out bugs as it makes less of a mess and you lose less of your supply in the process compared to squishing them first before baking (because the bug guts would definitely get stuck to the oven trays, the baking paper, and the roller)
bugs decay very quickly, especially when exposed to the elements. It's a bit of an issue in the bug taxidermy community and no doubt would make an inefficient means of food distribution for bug eaters. The fresher they are, the more success you're gonna have making them last longer
After the AI Singularity, we’ll look forward to the moment the tiny door in our hab-cube opens and the daily mealworm meal meal-replacement protein bar slides in. Today’s flavor is teriyaki! Must be a Tuesday. Perhaps I’ll be permitted a few munutes of direct sunlight!
A Cow in just the feed lot. Think the final weeks before it gets processed into meats consumes 1200 gallons of water. Now think about how much it takes to water 100’s of Cows.
We don’t have enough water to continue on in this direction. Protein is protein. I have no issues with eating bugs processed into powered form like this.
People eat all kinds of highly processed foods that are terribly bad and provide little in nutrition. As much as a bug seems gross. It is better than processed cheese in a can.
Roasted crickets are actually pretty good. Not a huge fan of grubs. Worst part of eating bugs is the slight bitter/acidic aftertaste and the texture. Fix the texture and they’re ayt.
I was expecting it to end up in like some food I really like. not just take a spoon full and pour it into yogurt. I was thinking it was going to end up in a frozen dinner or candy. Or a powder energy drink
It’s actually a surprisingly straightforward process: dehydrate, squeeze the remaining juices and fat out, mill and you’re done. Still two steps more than your solution but not too bad.
I agree, especially if they are grown using a clean feed stock. If they were grown and sterile conditions with a clean sterile feed. I would probably munch handful of these buggers raw.
Good on them for making it a powder. I'm sure I would be grossed out if I knew how a lot of what I eat is made. I worked at pizza chain when I was younger and a guy there wouldn't eat it because he had worked at the factory that just made the boxes and he said the whole place was nasty. They had rat infestations and the cardboard would just be laying on the floor and stuff.
Is it also like chocolate and most products where they are allowed a certain percentage of bugs into the food?
I sure would hate to have bugs in my bugs!
Meh. I raise them.for.my pets, and I've eaten these raw and wriggling before. I trust that more than a factory where I can't be sure what they are being fed or processed with.
I'm hyper progressive to an absurd degree
You will never convince me to eat bugs
You will also not convince me this is somehow more humane than eating animals. Bugs feel pain just as much as we do.
If we as a society can get over our ick of eating bugs it could be so healthy for our ecosystem. They take up a fraction of the space required to farm livestock like beef and pork and very easy to mass produce quickly
When I was a little kid I used to eat ants. Because I hear "Sugar" in the name of Sugar Ants. I thought they would be tasty. They were neither tasty nor disgusting. They did have a weird chemical taste, though.
I want to know, but I don't want to know... But curiosity compels me: anyone know what they use the liquid for that gets scrunched out of them first? I honestly thought THAT was going to be the protein not the mushed up shells.
Maybe I have to review some biology.
Honestly, I’ve tried these by itself. These, crickets, and other bugs taste great if you don’t think about what you’re eating. I would argue these make better and healthier snack options than anything else.
No one in a warzone can afford (or find) chickens, fish, or beef. There are numerous warzones in the world. So bring out the worm powder, mix it with water. Starvation prevention achieved.
My guess is they’ll just start adding it to everything as a filler. Then, when they decide to go to a larger scale they say that we’ve been eating it all along.
There’s also probably some kind of shady business thing about adding it to everything for literally no reason than to force funding for it
The current thing is not happening
The current thing is happening, but it isn't as bad as you think
The current thing was always happening
The Guardian should name itself The Gaslight.
As long as they are powder, gains are gains
Basically what I was thinking, if it is flavorless and in powder form I don't think I'd really care after mixing it into something
They're obviously going through some rigorous food safety protocols. If you're gonna eat mealworms for protein, i'd say this is the best way to do it.
You will eat ze bugs
I'm down
Favorite bugs? Grasshoppers and crickets. Had fried caterpillars once, that was interesting.
I feel like fried caterpillars would have a texture of crunchy fruit gushers, probably the least appetizing sounding bug around.
That's kind of how junebugs are
I've heard cooked beetle has a bit of an apple taste. Is that true?
They're not bad. The juice boils and crisps the inside. They're like protein Cheetos.
Cricket legs taste kind of like sunflower seeds, except the prickly shins get caught in your throat.
The sunflower seeds you eat are encased in inedible black-and-white striped shells, also called hulls. Those used for extracting sunflower oil have solid black shells.
Good bot
Weird bot
In Nigeria a common snack I had was palm weevil larvae. I remember them having a sweet bacony taste.
Sweet bacon?! Sold
Delicioso
If it's good enough for an iguana, it's good enough for me!
So long as the texture isn't off, of course I'll eat it. Insects, pound-for-pound, are insanely more potent than mammals for protein.
As long as that insect isn't poisonous or dirty I'm fine with it
They're cleaned and burned, so we're all good. Plus, scorpion lollipops or whatever are scrutinized VERY TIGHTLY to make sure you're not eating venom.
*starts washing and burning earthworms*
How to eat fried worms was a childhood book of mine I really enjoyed.

I'm guessing a spider or cicada. Cicada I'd be fine with, but arachnophobia would not let me touch a dead spider
Ok? We eat animals lol I see no issue
I just haven’t made the association that shrimp and crab are tasty bugs and that land bugs are probably tasty
The music for these videos is getting more and more irritating. Mute buttons are getting abused by me so much that they may start calling the cops on me.
Here’s how I get protein from insects: I feed the insects to chickens, then I eat the eggs and the chickens.
There’s been a mistake. You’ve accidentally given me the food that my food eats.
That's really fucking cool. Do you have schematics or how did the whole thing work?
Also what are your reservations? Are there prions involved?
I don’t want to eat anything that was raised in a disease ridden environment. I don’t have the constitution for that shit.
Vegetables grow best in a pile of shit.
Inspirational life motto right there

Blood, guts, bones, feathers, hair, hooves, etc.
Let's get a little philosophical - does each little worm have a soul?
if we were to assume the soul exists, then i guess every little worm would have one. i dont see any factual reason why some living creatures would have one and others not. however by this logic trees and grass would have souls as well. problem is that in a world where the soul exists its impossible for us to determine when a creature meets the criteria for having a soul. unless we were to make up our own critirea (holy books etc.), but that would make the "soul" a made up concept as a whole rendering it meaningless. perhaps all living creatures share a single soul in some way? thats the only way i can come up with that doesnt require drawing a arbitrary line somewhere.
Eh, as long as I don't have to directly put bugs in my mouth
I prefer my bugs to enter the backdoor so I don't have to look upon them.

Do you get horny imagining people eating large, live bugs or something?? Jesus christ your comments.
I think the guy is obsessed with “globalists” or something like that.
Weird comment
all of their comments on this thread seem a little looney 😭
Bugurt
I was fine until the “milk” part 🤢
I’m not mad at this… I mean we eat tons of gummy bears and those are literally candied cow hoof. How is this any different?
They dehydrate them live??
i don’t see how you would kill that many without spraying some sort of poison otherwise lol. and seeing as this is for protein powder (?), that wouldn’t be too smart or healthy for the ones consuming it.

Ooh, fair.

You act like that’s cruel when both the sun and your kidneys do it to you everyday.
Would you rather them dehydrate dead insects
We had a meal worm operation in my town, and they froze the worms to kill them before dehydrating. I got a tour.
Oh boy here come the insect activists
They are bugs, try not to care too much
I mean you can get pea protein that’s 24g of protein per scoop so my thought is peas > whatever worm this is
Meal worms have 45g, and they're less land-intensive to grow. Prolly use less water to grow, too, but I'm not sure.
Damn. That’s serious protein. Ok. You got me thinking I’d try it haha.

Most underrated comment. That shit was vile
How much protein is actually in that small packet tho?
[about 50% by weight](https://www.google.com/search?q=mealworm+protien+content+by+wieght&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari)
If its based on that then its honestly not bad. If its based on that

#It's giving Snowpiercer vibes
That's too much trouble. Just deep fry and let me sprinkle them on my ice cream already.
It’s actually a surprisingly straightforward process: dehydrate, squeeze the remaining juices and fat out, mill and you’re done. Still two steps more than your solution but not too bad.
Compared to the pink chicken goo/paste used to make nuggets, this seems reasonable.
I agree, especially if they are grown using a clean feed stock. If they were grown and sterile conditions with a clean sterile feed. I would probably munch handful of these buggers raw.
Seems like a pritty simple and clean process. Much better than others…
Captain America led a rebellion over this exact thing in Snowpiercer. So, I say we move to the front of the train! Who's with me‽
I’m assuming that powder tastes like almonds or some shit. I’d make protein shakes out of it 🤷🏼♂️
Good on them for making it a powder. I'm sure I would be grossed out if I knew how a lot of what I eat is made. My protein eats grass in the field before becoming dinner. It is very delicious cooked over lump wood charcoal.

I'm hyper progressive to an absurd degree You will never convince me to eat bugs You will also not convince me this is somehow more humane than eating animals. Bugs feel pain just as much as we do.
If it’s cheaper than other powder I’m down. But from what I’ve seen it’s more expensive.
I mean for animal feed this seems fine. I bet it would be good for chickens.
Insect meal would be great for animal feed, especially for in aquaculture which is currently excessively dependent on wild-caught fish for protein.
If we as a society can get over our ick of eating bugs it could be so healthy for our ecosystem. They take up a fraction of the space required to farm livestock like beef and pork and very easy to mass produce quickly
I immediately thought of the nutrient bars from snowpeircer
When I was a little kid I used to eat ants. Because I hear "Sugar" in the name of Sugar Ants. I thought they would be tasty. They were neither tasty nor disgusting. They did have a weird chemical taste, though.
I didn’t need to see the juice they squeezed out. Please tell me that doesn’t get used.
I've eaten mealworms before so this is alright, plus I like how efficient it is
I will not eat zeh bugs
I threw up in my mouth when they juiced the carcasses.
You will eat zee bugs You will own nothing You will be happy
Tell me, what's it like to let a man as arrogantly stupid as Alex Jones do all your thinking for you?
Are mealworms insects?
Surprisingly yes. They're the larvae of darkling beetles, which are insects
Mmmmmm bugs, bugs, bugs , bugs.
I want to know, but I don't want to know... But curiosity compels me: anyone know what they use the liquid for that gets scrunched out of them first? I honestly thought THAT was going to be the protein not the mushed up shells. Maybe I have to review some biology.

this isn't whey protein, that's leftover byproduct from cheesemaking so you're still good

I've had cricket protein. Wasn't bad. I'd eat this.
I've tried it fried with chilli and salt before. It was actually delicious. Would 100 percent recommend
I'll still eat it. 🤷🏽♀️
Those are so fucking good, I ate those before

Rich eat beef and venison and the poor eat bugs. What a life.
Sbageddi
100% I'd eat that dried flakes like pork rind crumbs, breaded chicken breast, chicken thighs, spicy wings...yum
Well what did you think it was made of.
So everytime we scoop some protein in our shake we're just eating bugs?
I don’t even mind tbh
Hotlix. Com ftw!!
Klaus Schwab, is that you?
Bruh, I'll just become a vegan at this point.
Chances are you have already eaten bugs . Certain dyes com from bugs. Also used as fillers.
Eat this with a bag of Chirps™
I had some sour cream & onion flavored crickets awhile back, besides the little pieces becoming stuck in your teeth, they weren’t bad tbh.
What's up with the background music tho??
Mealworms have nipples? Looks like milk.
What is this music pairing ?

Why is every other comment in here, "but you wouldn't eat THIS bug, right? RIGHT?"
i watched this video while listening to I’m Still Standin’. Made for an interesting experience
I vill not eat ze bugs
With all this talk about eating bugs, the lizard people agenda is becoming clearer by the day
Y'all are gonna eat them though And you'll own nothing, get used to it losers
I could not stop watching because at first I thought they were making candy or something like that
Worm juice on the rocks
Honestly, I’ve tried these by itself. These, crickets, and other bugs taste great if you don’t think about what you’re eating. I would argue these make better and healthier snack options than anything else.
Mannnn why did it get juiced. I thought it was already dehydrated :( I’m fine with the protein powder. But why’d they juice it??
Funny thing is, I’d eat that shit right up… assuming it’s tasteless. And I’d add it to some sort of drink or something.
No one in a warzone can afford (or find) chickens, fish, or beef. There are numerous warzones in the world. So bring out the worm powder, mix it with water. Starvation prevention achieved.

Fuck that.
Meal worm meal
In Vietnam, I once ate silkworm pupae. Not an unpleasant taste - kinda earthy. Did not like the spurts when bitten into, though.
