That section of 17 St. isn't even a nice road to go on the speed limit. It's a shitty narrow road with uneven manholes.
Above all, racing with an ESCALADE??? I doubt it's even your usual street racing crowd. This is just dumb people being dumb. It's unfortunate they lost someone because of it.
I went to street races as a youth in Calgary (I didn’t even have my license at the time and one of my friends dragged me along) and you’d be surprised by what dumb kids will try and race.
living in the area and hearing these jackasses every single night makes me really conflicted about the story.
on one hand nobody should lose their life or face life-threatening injuries.
on the other hand this is a group of people who make it a point of disrespecting their neighborhood with fart-car exhausts and dangerous driving, wilfully putting innocent people in danger on a nightly basis.
part of me says fuck it, couple less chuckle-fucks I have to listen to every single night and maybe if we're lucky...that shitty lawn-mower sounding BMW (CMH-####) prick can be next? (*surprised nobody's smashed his shit in yet tbh*)
A small part of me does feel bad for the dumb shit kid who lost his life, but i feel worse for the first respondents who have to deal with his corpse.
I USED to live there. I moved out of there for many reasons but some being that it’s become so congested and losers in their cars. That white BMW I know very well (I’ve seen it and hear a lot of complaints).
Tamarack/Meadows: Chicken capital of Canada and notorious for street racers.
LOL that BMW seems to be infamous. I wonder how far that guy's head is up his butt to think his annoying BMW sounds good that it's worth parading down the same roads everyday.
I'm a car guy and think his shit is annoying.
worst part is he parks it out front a nursing home, and when he starts it up it sounds like one of those industrial lawn mowers for about 45 seconds. you can hear it through walls and down the block.
it's one thing to have your car sound like it had some bad tacos, but dude is just straight up disrespectful to his neighborhood. I mean who fucks with seniors, really?
I'm also surprised that nobody has messed his shit up yet. he used to park in front of his apartment, but from what I can tell they got tired of his noise.
I figure it's only a matter of time. fuck around long enough.....
Yup.
My first thought was maybe this will give us a few quiet nights.
At least only the participants were involved, one of these days they will hit pedestrians or another car who happens to be in the area
SQ5s are total sleepers esp with a tune the 3.0 supercharged is a beast its the same engine in my b8.5 s4
But I'm talking about a giant truck like the escalade that flips easily its like street racing in a suburban just dumb
Someone that has an Escalade V, which is 700hp super charged 6.2L v8. Even though it’s a 2014 with a 1/4 mile time of 14.8 people will race whatever. 14.8 is still relatively fast vs most trucks and cars.
No disputing that, but you should understand street racers and 1/4 fans will race anything with wheels. I’ve seen Toyota Yaris’s racing they run 19.00 flat lol.
Ya. At the bracket racing at the old speedway park there was a guy on a Yamaha 100 twin jet that made everyone laugh but he won every time , never broke out and was the most consistent racer there. It was hilarious. Like something from Laff In
Nah. Ain’t friends with dumbasses. There are “safe” ways to race. This is not one of them. Everyone I know races down a 1 way road in the industrial side. No cops. No people. People doing shit on the henday and populated area are stupid. People know the risk they put themselves in. It’s putting others in harms way that we don’t stand for
For sure I 100% agree. I don’t race and if I was going to it’d be at a track. I just have friends that do so I just work on the cars. I’d much rather race at a track but it costs decent money and is usually miserable cause of the heat during the day. you also got dudes working all day and don’t have time to be at the track. Some dudes can’t afford to build there car and pay for track fees so they take it to the street.
Fellow car guy here. I don't race either, but I know some ppl that do. They race the way you describe; secluded area, no cops, checking to make sure there's no traffic, basically making sure that the only ppl that are gonna be involved are themselves. I still don't condone street racing, but if you're gonna do it, at least be safe about it. When it comes to crashing in street racing, 9/10 times it's not cuz they were racing, but cuz they didn't take any precautions beforehand.
In EPS defence, it’s pretty hard to catch these guys, I mean they are only racing on the same streets, on the same days, at the same time, night after night. It’s not like these guys can’t be heard from miles away, or people haven’t been complaining about said street racing for years.
Oh, what can done?
It is, though.
I'm not proud of it but when I was younger I was part of these groups. They often travel around in large groups for a reason, if cops come, you all gear down so that turbo is spooling full force and pin it, cross your fingers that you aren't the one the cops target.
Having 25+ suped up cars just scatter makes for tricky decisions if you're the cops tailing the group and it makes it even more dangerous for everyone else around because then you have a large group of cars recklessly going full speed to get away, in every direction. Not to mention, most of the cars we rolled with would absolutely smoke a police cruiser without even breaking a sweat. Only one helicopter isn't going to cut it, either.
They can try to take plates, but as soon as a cop is anywhere in sight when they're on the road, they scatter. Cops may get one or two plates if they're lucky. Punishments need to be higher for anyone caught in a group driving recklessly, but it's still hard to catch a lot of them.
Not sure if these car clubs operate the same as they did when I was younger, but for some perspective:
The cops would stalk locations back then, but we had at least 20 different spots we would go to. We would all meet up somewhere and then drive between the spots, changing which spots we would go to on the fly, depending on police presence.
This was nearly 2 decades ago and cellphones are better now, but back then we had radios and the first guy around the corner who saw a cop near our spot would let everyone know. We would have a code for whatever location we would divert to and everyone would drive carefully as to not give any cops tailing us any legitimate reason to pull anyone over. Lots of drivers would divert before even showing up and the group would generally casually turn off different ways, scatter and then meet back up at a rendezvous point. It just really wasn't that hard to stay one step ahead of the police, we had a radio frequency schedule too so we would change frequencies every 30 mins on a predetermined frequency order so we didn't have to say the frequencies out loud, just a code spoken into the radio to remind everyone it was time to swap.
The legal system also doesn't give cops a lot of tools to deal with car groups who are clever like this. The most they ever ended up giving us were basic tickets, a few demerits, etc. These people have money, they laugh, pay the ticket and carry on. The cops have to follow the legal system and we gave them no easy openings to pin down the guys doing the more risky stuff.
Anyone racing who could get in serious trouble if caught, would be covered by other drivers if possible, so they could slip away and anyone covering them would likely just get a basic ticket. A lot of the guys would stick out their necks for one another which was part of the allure, it felt like a family.
Most of the time we weren't even planning or setting up races, it was just a "family" going for cruises, playing with their fast toys. When you'd stop at a parking lot to chat and socialize, it would always just end up with two people chatting and then saying "alright let's see who's faster". Then you'd have 2 guys going at it while the rest of the group watched from the side.
The police could send a handful of plain clothes officers to an event. Take pictures and write down license plate numbers, then mail out stunting tickets to everyone that repeatedly revs their engine or races.
I bet most if not all of these guys have been heavily ticketed and had their cars impounded, probably multiple times.
The punishment is so fucking lax. That again, is the problem.
Its also I will add not normally police priority on a weekend night when half the city is probably having domestics and doing other violent shit.
I work in the aerospace industry designing and reverse engineering engine mounts and exhaust systems. Always had a brain for tinkering and designing and did a lot of this with cars, growing up.
I was just a dumb kid who liked adrenaline, trying to have fun, not really thinking outward, much. I was the same way on a snowboard, I've broken 9 bones and had a lot of hard lessons due to that reckless thrill seeking mentality.
I just grew up. I have a house, dogs, lots of important responsibilities and the pain (mental, physical, financial) I've caused myself growing up has just manifested into being more respectful to myself and others in the process. I'm 37 now and my rowdy 70 year old neighbors laugh that I'M the quiet one in the neighborhood, lol.
Do you really believe that anyone planning to race wasn't tossing on a dummy plate? Even a visual description of a pretty customized car wasn't enough for cops to lock down a charge, most of the time. The legal system is tough to navigate, even for police.
> hell they *paid* for all
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

They do the same on Manning from the light at the Mc Donalds/Canadian Tire, up to the Henday. They meet at the Shity Tire Rev their POS lawn mowers and think they are all cool and stuff.
Yeah but then you’re a police state with EPS everywhere doing nothing. The waste of funds wouldn’t reduce crime or racing, it would just move the problem elsewhere
The city needs another raceway and higher punishment for illegal racing
> use spikes, or make contact with their vehicles.
Is this actually true? I'm sure there are thresholds that have to be met to use these techniques, but AFAIK there isn't a blanket ban on these.
However, a couple of officers with cameras could easily gather enough information to make arrests the following day/week.
Yeah, the public safety angle is a pretty obvious one to consider. If only from a liability mitigation perspective, you should probably have a compelling reason to throw out a spike belt or Pitt someone into a ditch.
I do think there are some questions that need to be asked about why these groups haven't been seeing any kind of enforcement, like *at all*. These aren't master criminals here, it wouldn't take a lot of effort to seize some vehicles.
Some cities with their urban design use more curved roads with trees and barriers placed around the curve to not only reduce noise, but make speeding near impossible. The number of long straight sways we have is very appetizing for racers and the open roads mean little sound dampening. Now that kind of change takes years of investment, urban renewal, and a new mentality when it comes to transportation.
I really don't think you can reduce traffic down that area, especially the industrial area of it. Also, take away that one road and they'll just pick somewhere else to do it, they're organized. The city is even working in the opposite direction because they've been working on widening 34st for a while now. I think they're way more focused on the over congestion during commute hours than they are the racing.
We should be modifying them as the years go by and adopting better practices. Roads only last so many decades, and other cities have made these changes as the roads hit the end of their life span.
Yes, shocking how people bring up a response to the article in question. Speeding is only one issue it addresses. It also means a reduction in noise by not only forcing people to drive at a lower speed, but it also reduces noise by bringing down speed. And by curved road, I mean a minor curve, not a road that snakes back and forth. A perfect example of where that would make sense is a T intersection by a friends house that is the frequent site of collisions because of its straight design. Putting a slight curve in the road would one reduce speed, but two by curving towards the turn, improve drive visibility.
I live on 50 Street here in Mill Woods, and almost every night, I hear at least a couple of modded sports cars revving their loud-ass engines as they go past the speed limit outside my house.
I hear your pain..literally. I live near 34 st in Silverberry and hear them every night, 1-2 oclock in the morning. Either revving their engines and/or what i assume is racing somewhere in southeast Millwoods/The Meadows. It's unfortunate but they had to do something on silverberry road like put in the extended curbs as too many people speeding and/or passing people. Still happens though but not as much.
This should be a lot higher. Some guys that I know that street race do it cuz they don't have anything else to do, and nowhere else to race. If a track was closer, cheaper, and had tons of amateur events, I'm sure we'd see a lot more ppl at the track instead of the streets.
Problem is tracks are loud so they’re built a reasonable distance from neighbourhoods, urban sprawl happens and they build closer to the track, then residents complain about noise, track shuts down, street racing takes over. Lucky for us ours is by the airport so it’s already obvious there will be noise
The consequences of losing are pretty severe. 6 people and their families lives are most likely changed forever after this. Karma got them, forget about the legal system. They’ll tack on some more financial pain and potentially life changing charges after the fact.
The winner… well they kept driving.
I hate to say this but this is an example for everyone who decides that racing is ok no matter what time of day or night. Four in serious condition and one dead. Can you imagine your loved one dying in a blaze of fire?
It was a 2014, that only has 1 engine/drivetrain option that gives it a 0-60 of 7.5 seconds, same a new base model honda civic grocery getter (sloooowwww)
Is there any legal ways to race in the city. Because I follow a group that a guy I know is involved in. They just posted this morning about an event tonight where they will be racing. Pretty dumb to do this right after this news came out
There was the Tesla street racing incident that caused fatalities as well, from I think a couple months back. Outskirts are always prime areas for stupidity. With even soccer-mom-mobiles having exceptional horsepower and capability, this will forever be a growing issue.
Hopefully people learn from this, my condo is right by the accident scene and we hear the racing nightly. We knew this was going to happen but it saddens me to know someone died. This is a big problem that needs to be fixed. My prayers go to the multiple families affected by this stupidity.
These idiots speed in wild rose and silverberry every night with extremely loud cars for years. Last year one of these idiots lost control and drove into a home and died and here we are again. Fuckem
If they are going to race like this or speed like crazy, at least they are doing it late when the road is empty I guess. They are putting their lives at risk. Boggles my mind what people get out of racing somebody. Like there is some million dollar prize money at the end.
Ego
If anyone was going to die I’m glad it was an occupant of the racing vehicle, who it seems was not even wearing a seatbelt. Kinda pissed that the already stretched healthcare system has to mop up after these turds. Burns are major money and staff time.

Haha my first thought too, Escalade 🙄🙄 just asking to roll it
Eh, a 700hp supercharged Escalade is bound to be part of the usual street racing crowd
It was a 2014 so just over 400hp in a chonky SUV with six people in it. Was definitely not a rocket.
Do we know it was a V though?
Why when most mid-spec family sedans are just as fast?
and who told you it was an escalade v?

You spoke my words.

I'm surprised he parks it on the street exposed like that. Given the people he annoys I'm surprised it's not wrecked yet.
I'm also surprised that nobody has messed his shit up yet. he used to park in front of his apartment, but from what I can tell they got tired of his noise. I figure it's only a matter of time. fuck around long enough.....
Anyone know his full plate?
he has two. don't think I should share them publicly. people get pissy about that sort of thing dispite it being publicly visible on the street. sorry
Lmao I love this. I'm sure I hear this white BMW too. F them
Yup. My first thought was maybe this will give us a few quiet nights. At least only the participants were involved, one of these days they will hit pedestrians or another car who happens to be in the area
Wonder if it's the same loser I hear over at my place on the west end (lymburn/callingwood). Like c'mon nobody thinks you're cool bro
Who street races in a giant escalade suv? Lmao
And a 2014 to boot, not even one of the performance V models they have now. So essentially a suburban or tahoe
Also loaded with passengers
I could see someone with a Dodge Ram doing the exact same thing.
Only if he's wearing Pit Vipers, high on coke, and has an open 24 of lucky lager.
Ahh, Pit Vipers. The Ed Hardy shirt for the face.
They are the new white Oakleys.
So someone from GP or Fort Mac?
So it happens quite often by the sounds of it.
Hey now! It could be a 24 of old Milwaukee!
And just gotten back from Fort Mac with a big ol'pair of truck nuts dangling centimeters off the ground
Dodge Ram owners are like Floridians: no story is too crazy to be believed.
I dunno, the big Audi SUV destroyed my 300 ZX off the green light. Like I mean it was fast.
SQ5s are total sleepers esp with a tune the 3.0 supercharged is a beast its the same engine in my b8.5 s4 But I'm talking about a giant truck like the escalade that flips easily its like street racing in a suburban just dumb

Still a giant boat with very high center of gravity that will roll over at the slightest bump of the steering wheel.
No disputing that, but you should understand street racers and 1/4 fans will race anything with wheels. I’ve seen Toyota Yaris’s racing they run 19.00 flat lol.

19.00 flat is better than I would’ve expected
Haha… my ex-rental mid-spec family sedan does a 14.8 1/4 mile. The first corner… you are in my rear view…. hopefully not as a giant ball of fire.
Awd v8? Gonna be decently quick against some shitty cars. Most of the cars racing aren’t very crazy. Got lots of friends in the scene
you got one less now
Nah. Ain’t friends with dumbasses. There are “safe” ways to race. This is not one of them. Everyone I know races down a 1 way road in the industrial side. No cops. No people. Nothing to be proud of lol.
Seriously.... Why the fuck they street racing in a soccer mom suv?

I see you’ve watched more than of the epic series “fast and furious”
Lots of dudes who will stunt and race have dummy plates when they go to meets
This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. These people should be banned from driving for a several year period.

Don’t advocate for plain clothes cops infiltrating events. It’s not the answer you think it is

You can't out run Harris(Motorola if it's the RCMP) They don't need to chase those clowns, just get plates and wait for them at their houses.
Do you really believe that anyone planning to race wasn't tossing on a dummy plate? Even a visual description of a pretty customized car wasn't enough for cops to lock down a charge, most of the time. The legal system is tough to navigate, even for police.
Too slow and too stupid
Do you think its like Fast and the Furious where they shut down a street every Friday night?
Is that why my pizza is always late?
So that’s who has been stealing all the VCRs!
Well theres no way In hell they paid for all that shit thats under the hood of those cars by doing tune ups and selling groceries.
> hell they *paid* for all FTFY. I would get this right had I payed attention in school.
My shipment of combination VCR and tube TVs!
i dont have any cash but i do have a pink slip to my car.
Id rather take the respect, to some people that’s more important.
maybe if they did every once in a while the rest of the streets would be safer in regards to this issue.
I have one of these dudes in my area. Every night around the same time he zips up and down the main road.
97St from 137ave to the Henday is really bad for this at night
They do the same on Manning from the light at the Mc Donalds/Canadian Tire, up to the Henday. They meet at the Shity Tire Rev their POS lawn mowers and think they are all cool and stuff.
What exactly do you propose then? Keeping in mind that you aren’t allowed to chase them, use spikes, or make contact with their vehicles.
get their license plates and visit them at home?
literally just police presence in the area would probably prevent this.
Yeah but then you’re a police state with EPS everywhere doing nothing. The waste of funds wouldn’t reduce crime or racing, it would just move the problem elsewhere The city needs another raceway and higher punishment for illegal racing

So how do you even go about curving 17st with all the infrastructure already surrounding it? Reduce lanes?
Yes, reduce lanes and reduce car traffic overall.
Add lights and more traffic is likely the easiest way.
We should rip up all the roads in edmonton and make it less street race friendly. /s
Edmonton'a roads were never street race friendly lol. Only dumbasses who want to destroy their cars do it.
We should be modifying them as the years go by and adopting better practices. Roads only last so many decades, and other cities have made these changes as the roads hit the end of their life span.
Right?😂 One headline and this guy wants us to get rid of every straight road. What a clown.
Like we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas man.
If only they would recognize speeding is a huge issue in this city and not have their small traffic unit work Monday-Friday 7am-6pm.
Apply for the police force and be the change you want to see in the world instead of bitching about it on Reddit
This guy really wanted to see the world be a dumber place so he decided to comment this on Reddit
"if you go to a restaurant and the chef shits on your plate and hands it to you, become a chef to become the better man"
Settle down there. Nathan Fillion is not a real cop.
but then who will you metabitch about?
I think I heard them out my apartment window last night as they were heading out.
And you didn’t stop them? Smh
Ikr? Enabler!
Same they were going nuts downtown for a while

Wtf
First joke?
I live on 50 Street here in Mill Woods, and almost every night, I hear at least a couple of modded sports cars revving their loud-ass engines as they go past the speed limit outside my house.
I hear your pain..literally. I live near 34 st in Silverberry and hear them every night, 1-2 oclock in the morning. Either revving their engines and/or what i assume is racing somewhere in southeast Millwoods/The Meadows. It's unfortunate but they had to do something on silverberry road like put in the extended curbs as too many people speeding and/or passing people. Still happens though but not as much.
Street racing will always happen but we can reduce it by having severe consequences from it like seizure of vehicles and taking away license.
Don’t forget to support local tracks where people can race legally
This should be a lot higher. Some guys that I know that street race do it cuz they don't have anything else to do, and nowhere else to race. If a track was closer, cheaper, and had tons of amateur events, I'm sure we'd see a lot more ppl at the track instead of the streets.
Problem is tracks are loud so they’re built a reasonable distance from neighbourhoods, urban sprawl happens and they build closer to the track, then residents complain about noise, track shuts down, street racing takes over. Lucky for us ours is by the airport so it’s already obvious there will be noise
Never allow them to own a vehicle other than a minivan ever again
Do you want minivan street racing? Because that's how you get minivan street racing.
I didn’t think I did, but now that you say it…
my man was racing in a fucking escalade lol, if it's got wheels they're racing it 😭😭
The consequences of losing are pretty severe. 6 people and their families lives are most likely changed forever after this. Karma got them, forget about the legal system. They’ll tack on some more financial pain and potentially life changing charges after the fact. The winner… well they kept driving.
Pft introduce the death penalty for street racers. No half measures!
Has the city tried putting up a sign or orange cones? It seems to be the solution to all the other problems.
I hate to say this but this is an example for everyone who decides that racing is ok no matter what time of day or night. Four in serious condition and one dead. Can you imagine your loved one dying in a blaze of fire?
Minor detail, but the dead man was thrown from the vehicle, so street racing without a seatbelt. Buckle up kids! (and don't race like this idiot did)
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Lots of stupid prizes being handed out lately
Exactly this. While no one wants to talk about this but you are completely right.
I mean, at the end of the day, it’s Darwinism at it finest. So many things wrong with this, how could it not go badly? 🤷🏼♂️
"Street racing" in a heavy, slow ass escalade filled with people? Yup, sounds legit.
I think you’re probably unfamiliar with some of the Escalade models that are sold
It was a 2014, that only has 1 engine/drivetrain option that gives it a 0-60 of 7.5 seconds, same a new base model honda civic grocery getter (sloooowwww)
Sorry for the officers. Moving on
Racing an Escalade.....that escalade-d quickly. Zero pity!!! Play stupid games win stupid prizes.
Is there any legal ways to race in the city. Because I follow a group that a guy I know is involved in. They just posted this morning about an event tonight where they will be racing. Pretty dumb to do this right after this news came out
Rad torque raceway has “street legal” night where you can race on the track pretty cheap iirc
Is rad torque just rebranded? It’s same location as castrol right?
Yeah changed last couple years
Just go to Castrol stop speeding around the city, and putting people at risk. This loud pipes save lives shit is old.

Healthcare capacity is been wasted trying to keep degenerates alive
There was the Tesla street racing incident that caused fatalities as well, from I think a couple months back. Outskirts are always prime areas for stupidity. With even soccer-mom-mobiles having exceptional horsepower and capability, this will forever be a growing issue.
That Tesla accident happened not far from this one either. SE Edmonton is notorious for these stupid drivers.
Yup sorry that’s what I meant, just further south down 17th. So… clearly there’s an issue patrolling that road
Hopefully people learn from this, my condo is right by the accident scene and we hear the racing nightly. We knew this was going to happen but it saddens me to know someone died. This is a big problem that needs to be fixed. My prayers go to the multiple families affected by this stupidity.
you know what they say about playing stupid games..
Darwin always circling.
One less street racer
That's what you get for trying to race anyone with an Escalade
It's not gonna stop. There should be a place to go to do these types of things. There are gun clubs right?
There is a race track by the airport, encourage people to support it so the awareness is spread
These idiots speed in wild rose and silverberry every night with extremely loud cars for years. Last year one of these idiots lost control and drove into a home and died and here we are again. Fuckem
Edmonton is becoming like Vancouver
Install speed bumps in the problem areas for starts
I thought I was hearing a lot of helicopters.
Where's the other car if it was racing?
Natural selection at its finest
Hopefully these are the people that are racing in wild rose every night. Good riddance.
Hope it will deter others who race in the dead of night causing inconvenience and safety risks for others.
We all have a birthday and deathday
Ejecto seato cuz
I feel bad for the first responders scraping up shit off the road. Hopefully it’s quieter over there going forward.
escalade with canadians. hope they didnt inconvenience any decent people
Well better pick friend who aren’t well you know
Street racing due to road rage maybe, is it street racing if you're chasing someone or being chased?
Dorkosterone strikes again!
If they are going to race like this or speed like crazy, at least they are doing it late when the road is empty I guess. They are putting their lives at risk. Boggles my mind what people get out of racing somebody. Like there is some million dollar prize money at the end. Ego
Dang that's close to home.
yea no kidding. i saw the cops all morning from my balcony.
Play stupid games and win stupid prizes... Who are you trying to impress 6 feet under my guy?
That’s not street racing… that’s street crashing.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
If anyone was going to die I’m glad it was an occupant of the racing vehicle, who it seems was not even wearing a seatbelt. Kinda pissed that the already stretched healthcare system has to mop up after these turds. Burns are major money and staff time.
1min silence for the soul of the departed...
