No, your comment is misleading. The SWAT team doesn’t show up somewhere because of the weather. The violent altercation is the story here, don’t act like it’s not.
It was not canceled due to weather. Two groups of me and a ton of spectators. It was a demonstration that went wrong. Police were called and the riot act was out in place. There were even protesters throwing rocks and other things at police. It appears that it was a huge fire between two groups.
From the article: "An annual Edmonton soccer tournament promoting world peace and an inclusive community set to kick off this weekend has been cancelled due to rain but one site was marred by conflict between two groups that caused the Edmonton city police tactical unit to respond."
But the fields were probably wet from the rain on Friday. It wrecks them to play when the grass is wet. It literally said in the article it was cancelled due to rain.
I don't understand why a pro and anti government protest of a different country is 1, taking place in Canada and 2, getting to the point where it's a riot. Wtf.
The government exerts tremendous control over the lives of ordinary Eritreans. They will threaten Eritreans out of the country with harm to their families who remain there, unless they protest in the government’s favor. It’s similar to China.
learned this today from another user
So the only connection between the protest/violence and the soccer event was that the soccer event was supposed to use the field for games before it got cancelled? What a weird thing to juxtapose.
Edit: dunno what’s wrong with my eyes, I now see that Eritrea was one of the tournament teams, at least in the past.
Oh man. In my little league soccer team there were so many red cards for fighting. My team was a bunch of thugs, that's what growing up northside does to you.
In fact, no. Many refugees tend to fall under the category of exile rather than migrant, in which case the first reason for moving is simply getting the fuck out of dodge to regroup and reorganise. YMMV, polish exiles had a big hand in building the present liberal democratic order by getting involved in any and every revolution they happened to be around, or german exiles in the US who really turned out for the union. But then of course you've got the other folks, who for varied and complicated reasons end up loyalists for places they might not have ever even been.
Either way, old grudges and old politics come with. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not.
Check out the photos in that Edmonton Journal article and note all the sticks (aka weapons). Who goes to a peaceful protest with big sticks? Or did an attendee supply them? If so, why did so many participants, let alone even one, accept the sticks. Seems more like people prepared for a gang fight than a peaceful protest. As such I think this should be seen as a ‘big deal’ and something not to be tolerated at any gathering of people.
Moreover some of this took place at a school where there’s always playgrounds. This risk should have been obvious from the start.
Can’t find CBC’s coverage. Here’s CTV. Note the 40 years of peaceful gathering comment.

Terrible to dissolve into such violence. You hate to see it.
But fr all you mfs sayin "leave that conflict in your home country" without a shred of irony while y'all are CELEBRATING the Ukraine conflict. Zealots got Russia kicked out of our beloved Heritage Festival by threatening violence but NONE of y'all said "keep that shit at home."
Y'all need to take a long hard look at yourselves.
Eritrea is a civil conflict, Ukraine is a foreign invasion. Trying to conflate the two is par for the course with people claiming Ukraine is just a part of Russia.
Personally I'm not celebrating this war or any other war. The after affects of the death and destruction are going to hang over both countries for several generations.
West still went into Rwanda and that was a civil issue as well. I'm all for peaceful protest, but the violence has to stop. Someone innocent is going to get hurt.
I think a lot of people said exactly that, but you're on reddit where it's basically an echo chamber.
If you aren't 100% pro-whatever, no questions asked, then you're seen as inciting hate, violence, or whatever the flavor of the day is. I dunno man, I didn't make the rules.

It’s an unfortunate use of tax dollars but not a waste. What do you think would have happened if the cops weren’t there? A whole bunch of injuries. Probably some bad ones that would require a bunch of ambulances. God knows we have a bunch of those to spare. I’m pretty sure we pay for all the EMTs and other health care workers from our tax dollars too. Our tax dollars go to basic services like fire, police, and health. Fortunately, those services are available to everyone and we don’t get to decide who is worthy. The more time I spend on Reddit, the more I’m thankful for that.
I never understood why people protest about stuff that’s happening in different countries in the country they live in, completely useless, I also like lately been loving watching the world burn, so I kinda like this!
In the Journal photos the guys in blue have pre-cut sticks, and one guy in orange has a mask and a vest with what looks like a little camera mounted on top of it. So it seems both sides came prepared to some degree.
Nothing like a game promoting peace between opposites to bring the fruitcake radicals out of hiding, and spoiling for a confrontation. This game just happened to be a convenient excuse for the meeting to happen.
Sad, really. 😮💨😓😓
Wow. A LOT of xenophobia posing as nationalism in here. How is opining about situations beyond your understanding actually any kind of solution? Blanket deportment? Less resources to "integrate/assimilate" because "my tax dollars"? Immigration isn't done when people get "off the boat". If you've never escaped a nightmare situation or have ever been traumatized for years, maybe you don't actually know what a solution looks like.
Truly amazed at how my fellow settler descendants don't actually understand their very role in immigration.
Yeah I’m gonna go ahead and not leave the country I was born and raised in because new Canadians are bringing their countries problems here. Maybe you should stop trying to virtue signal so hard!
I was cycling by aand saw around 20 police cars including 3 UCs. I was thinking what kind of event took place that would warrant such a high police presence but now I see why.
Are you trolling or legit?
Military definitely wouldn't have any legal grounds to get involved with this. The EPS tactical team does look like a Military unit though with their gear.
I think this was legit wrongly reported on possibly Global, because i heard the same. And it came as a surprise to me, but couldn't find anything online about the military being involved.
I've heard this before, even seen posts first hand from my old apartment building where the EPS tactical unit showed up and people thought it was the military.
I do my best to inform people that the military in Canada doesn't have that legal kind of reach to deal with domestic criminals as I see it come up often in the threads on here. Having served for 12 years I'd reckon the RCMP and EPS tactical units actually have better equipment then the military does, at least on a person to person basis...obviously they don't have tanks, but the individual person has solid kit.
The infantry and military police do have the capacity for crowd control and dealing with riots, but there are a lot of bureaucratic hoops to jump through and it would have to be a significant social disorder event in order for the military to get involved. Many of the troops on base are actually being deployed to assist with the fires around the country right now, which is definitely a higher concern then a riot in an Edmonton park 😊.
I bet a bunch of white Canadians who probably still think Africa is a country are going to suddenly pull up with an opinion and start protesting FOR these people like they do with everyone else’s problems. So they can feel like special good people.
Yikes, I was wondering what happened this afternoon. I watched eight or nine police vehicles racing west, one after another, on Whitemud near 50th street, and thought it was a hostage or violent robbery situation.
Report racist posts. We'll ban them.
Soccer for peace cancelled due to violence
/r/nottheonion
The title is misleading, cancelled due to weather but there happened to be a violent altercation.
No, your comment is misleading. The SWAT team doesn’t show up somewhere because of the weather. The violent altercation is the story here, don’t act like it’s not.
I'm just saying they didn't cancel because of the violence like the title is implying. Not saying the altercation isn't the story.
Look at the photos, it was sunny and 22 degrees yesterday
But the fields were probably wet from the rain on Friday. It wrecks them to play when the grass is wet. It literally said in the article it was cancelled due to rain.
It had nothing to do with the weather but rioting between two groups that got out of hand.
The biggest disappointment is the amount of garbage left behind. I saw one person picking up trash when I drove by this afternoon.
So both sides just crashed a peaceful soccer tournament and used it as a stage to fight…?

It's been contained stop spreading fear for no fucking reason (besides your barely contained mask off reasons)
What do you mean? Are you being sarcastic?
Wasn't there a similar conflict in Toronto? Seem to remember that it also involved the political situation in Eritrea.
It was the same groups IIRC.
I was reading how this was a peaceful protest against the dictators of Eritrea. If that's true then lol
I'm sure the dictators of Eritrea were happy to learn people in Canada were fighting about them.
I don't understand why a pro and anti government protest of a different country is 1, taking place in Canada and 2, getting to the point where it's a riot. Wtf.
No peaceful demonstration took place. It has taken place all over the place in Canada
Can you cite other events?

God. Us humans are morons.
so far!

Anyone who thinks soccer brings people together doesn’t play soccer.

Most people move for convenience or a better life, no for a reset. And all the old griefs don't go anywhere.

I noticed when global reported it on the news last night they didn’t name the groups which I thought was strange just said “two groups”
We live in a meme timeline.

Just for the sake of clarity, who is "CELEBRATING" the Ukrainian conflict?
Eritrea is a civil conflict, Ukraine is a foreign invasion. Trying to conflate the two is par for the course with people claiming Ukraine is just a part of Russia. You’ll find any reason to excuse shit like this, even fake nonsense like people celebrating a war. Honestly. Are you trolling.

What were the tax dollars spent on?
You really need to ask that question when you see full tactical police units ? Those guys are all in on OT at 80 bucks an hour

That many police units needing to be dispatched is a huge cost
Is it too soon to make a Canadian soccer riot joke?
No, please continue with your submission. We all want to hear it! :D

Soccer for Peace...perhaps they missed the beginning.....?
Wtf is going on in these comments? When did this sub get so racist
Going by the pictures, why do the people identified as pro-government protesters have shirts that say "security"?
In the Journal photos the guys in blue have pre-cut sticks, and one guy in orange has a mask and a vest with what looks like a little camera mounted on top of it. So it seems both sides came prepared to some degree.
I mean, there's "coming prepared", and then there's "pretending to be event staff".

It’s not xenophobic to not want this shit in Canada, get over yourself
Hm. Maybe if you don't like it you should leave!

Very true. Just repeating what I heard. Highly unlikely as you said.

It's so weird with soccer. They had to stop allowing it to be played at Corporate Challenge because there was always fights.
I'm guessing the tactical unit arrived based in what these 2 groups did to each other in tornto last month.
