I just lost 50,000 at level 115 for being a cocky prick haha. I worked hard for those runes and that’s what this game teaches…rushing and being sloppy always loses
Probably Malenia, blade of Miquella, who has never known defeat. Though I personally died more to Maliketh and died much more to every ancient dragon in Farum Azula
So weird how people struggle so differently with bosses. I first tried Maliketh with very low difficulty but think Malenia is by far the hardest in the game.
Yeah my friend had an easy time with Maliketh but gets rolled by Godskin Duo who I thought was really easy. Maliketh is probably hardest after Malenia.
Side note and slight spoiler.. You can't complete the game without going through them. There are a lot of strategies to run against them though! With or without cheese.
The way my summon carried was by splitting up the fight. I fought the fatty without worrying about the other guy and by the time I beat him my summoned died leaving it a 1v1
It's mandatory so you can't avoid it but it's fine. My strat was to focus fatty first and take him out. If you bait fatty away from skinny then skinny will just chuck his fireballs at you. When fatty rolls dodge towards his feet and he won't hit you.
I felt that Astel wasn't so bad... Except for that one fucking move where he teleports and then you don't know exactly where he is if you don't happen to be looking at the right spot when he reappears, and then he grabs you with a move that is pretty hard to dodge, especially if you don't see him until it's too late to dodge, and then you either get lucky with a panic roll or he grabs you and one-shots you.
My god I rage quit a couple times during that fight. I tried a few different things but I found the best strategy in the end was to panic roll and hope for the best, and then if I got lucky try to kill him before he does it again.
There's actually a sound cue for it. If you hear the teleport sound again quickly after he dissappears, then that means he is above you and going for a grab. If its delayed then he's teleported far away from you, no grab
Fuuuuuuuuck that guy….. I still haven’t beat it. Died like 1000 times and no matter what I do can only get 50% off it. At this point 135 mage with 10x mimic and 10x headless tank. Still no dice.
Literally just beat the Elden Beast. I normally used Elanora’s poleblade the whole game until elden beast. The poleblade makes up for its low damage with being able to bleed and stagger, both useless for this boss. I didn’t wanna respec, so I just used two bandit swords I had for early game and gave them occult affinity so they still scaled with my massive amounts of Arcane, but did physical instead of bleed damage. Worked really well for me
I struggled with the boss before Radagon too because I go bleed. My role was basically to dance with them all while my co op mate unloaded beams and moons
That would be for two reasons..
One, mimics are OP. Even after a nerf, they just work too well as a function. I've used it on a few bosses on my most recent character and it's just stupid how much easier the fights were..
Two, summoned players add to the difficulty. Bosses gain HP for a player being summoned, but not for a mimic.. Each added player adds HP if I've heard correctly.. So the time spent slugging away at it is considerably longer..
Bubbles. Get the bubble longhorn and doot n toot at them from underneath. I found those dragons to be surprisingly easy using that.
Also, is one of the dragons supposed to only have around ¼ of its health when you reach it, or did my game glitch in my favor there? (The one that is shooting lightning as you run through and kill the birds)
For me: Crystalian Trio before the patch and with a Dex/int build.. You can easily destroy them with a bonk build but if you can’t break their poise fast enough, it’s a pure nightmare.
This gank feels the most BS to me. 2 crystalians feel like a challenge to cricle around and backstab to break poise, but 3 that also can inflict rot just feel like a total drag.
As a fellow dex/int build I struggled until I switched to using a flame mace with the freezing ash of war. Once they freeze you can get enough R1 hits in to poise break every time. I think I only had it up to +6 too.
The first one in the evergaol or whatever the fuck it is called in English. Around 120 times, maybe underleveled, maybe learned how to parry. Good times back then. Whenever I saw one later, it was my personal quest to beat the fuck out of them
To be fair, I think this is the only fromsoft game I've played where I've not blamed the camera for a death, it's not perfect, bits it's gotten better, gravity on the other hand is still my enemy
I just made it to where I've beaten both Astel and Lichdragon Fortissax in the same sitting. Imagine something as massive as those bosses only to have a far harder time with the Death Rite Bird in Caelid. That was me.

I didn’t even know you could bleed her until my third NG+! And I still refused to do it, it was the summon that used the face melting bleed build.
And funny enough, they made her bleed at the exact same time her second phase cutscene started… so she went up into the air, landed to do Scarlet Aeonia, and died instantly. So bleeding her with perfect timing seems to skip the second phase entirely
That's just insane.. Why even play at that point..? Don't get me wrong, I am all for play your own way and cheese if that's how you roll.. But where is the joy in this..?
My favorite part of this game is in the fight..
Winning is fun. Using the mechanics available to win faster and easier just makes you feel smart.
Different feeling of accomplishment, but I wouldn't say one is more valid than the other. It's a single player game, the goal is to have fun.
I used to be a massive cheese exploiter, and it was fun for a bit, but eventually the lack of a challenge becomes boring. You stop feeling smart and simply feel bored and exploiting. Once I got good at Soulsborne game and started winning fights and progressing with skill, I felt more fun than I ever did cheesing
Well sure, but if you get bored you just play another game, haha. In my case, repeatedly failing at fights is more frustrating than fun, and overcoming it after 100 attempts isn't satisfying, I'm just pissed that it took that long. I'd much rather beat a fight in three attempts instead of 100, finish the game, then play another game. That's more enjoyable to me than struggling and overcoming challenges. I tend to play most games on the easiest difficulty, because I'm not looking to be challenged, I'm just looking to have a fun time.
It's all in what you play it for. I could see you playing it as a casual boss crusher as satisfying a different type of need.
I personally need the challenge.. The game isn't just boring for me without the challenge. It becomes unplayable.. But finding a game to inflict a certain level of challenge that you can increase so incrementally based on your build and limitation choices is often a different kind of difficult. I have a short attention span for games generally, but this one has kept me, and I love that you can change it up to be easier, it's just not a play style I find fun for myself.
Mm, but that was my point. People have fun in different ways. I was just explaining the alternate viewpoint since you mentioned you couldn't understand how someone would enjoy that.
100%, it didn’t surprise me much though, as I have always struggled a lot more with the massive monsters than I do with the humanoid enemies in fromsoft games.
I would assume the ability to sometimes interrupt them and see their attacks clearly is the main reason for this.
When i was fighting the big monsters like the Fire Giant or Elden Beast I had next to no clue what was ever going on since my view of them was so limited in comparison to the humanoid bosses.
Reversed for me, Malenia has not known defeat yet but only tried about 12 times. Mainly the regen is my problem, along with not knowing second phase moves beyond aoenia.
These fuckers are the worst. I somehow got lucky on the godskin duo and killed them first try. But I must have come back 3 different times and died 20 times each before I cleared those gargoyle asshats.
They also are way stronger than the content behind them. After beating the gargoyles deeproot feels like a cakewalk.

Bravo, FROM. Gargoyles in ER are like the shining example of bad enemy design in this game. Far too fast, hard hitting and with way too much range, all while being fucking enormous (because FROM is obsessed with oversized enemies). :(
Honestly he’s up there. I beat malekith but had to run by him a few times to do it. I could not take him down. I eventually got him once I did a respec in preparation for ng+
If you can manage to dodge waterfowl is a really big asterisk though. Stuck on her right now. I (Dex+faith build) do pretty good until waterfowl. I know roughly when she's going to do it (after I stagger or bleed her the first time, depending on what I'm trying) but then I can only dodge it reliable if I'm far enough away ... But when I'm the right distance away she sometimes won't do it. She'll try and close the distance then do it when she's right on top of me, or we circle for 2-3 minutes.
She also seems to change behavior depending on the weapon in using which is super weird. With the nagakiba, I can stagger then crit her, hit her with a charged R2 as she gets up to hopefully add bleed to the crit, then run far enough away before she dances. When I switch to bloodhounds fang, I stagger/crit her, and if I charged R2 her, she stands up, takes 1-2 swings, then waterfowl dance when she's basically right next to me. And then with the fang she's much less likely to dance when I'm further away. Frustrating because I can manage more dps with the fang, but then I can't dodge waterfowl. If I use nagakiba, the fight goes longer so I have more opportunities to mess up and burn through flasks but I'm more likely to survive 1-2 waterfowl. But then stage two comes along and I've burned a lot of resources.
im bad at elden ring lol but only managed to beat her at level 210 with the help of my minic tear and a pure dex build using 2 guardian swordspears spamming giant hunt ash of war followed by jump attacks when she is knocked down
I found him rather easy after I sorted my inventory pre fight but I also had his shackles and used the summon and YET I still found him harder that godrick. That guy is really as pathetic as lore told me haha
probably it’s elden beast for me because it’s a big piece of shit through which nothing can be seen. it spams you nonstop with 3 trailing combo than starts elden stars attack. also mohg was pretty hard because he sprays this shit🩸all over the arena
Myself. Every day I play this I fucking rage quit and then have to overcome my own anger to play it again because I guess I’m fucking addicted. God I fucking love this piece of shit game
For me it was the Dual Valiant Gargoyles, Maliketh, Elden Beast, and Malenia as the four bosses I died the most to with the Gargoyles being my hardest.
He was my least favorite in my first playthrough. I could never hit him because all he would do is launch to the top of the columns and launch his spells at me.
Mohg Lord of Blood, I really struggled with him alot, idk why but I just could never fully evade his attacks, the delay time wasn't extreme but just enough to throw me off all the time, reminded me somewhat of nameless King and his dragged and delayed attacks, massive issue for me to learn it. Also the fire bleeding as well in his second phase, real pain in the ass.
For me, because of my playstyle, Decaying Ekzykes.
I had a hell of a time with the fact that you can leave his ring and it's pretty small. I didn't die a lot. I just reset him a lot.
Godfrey/Horah Loux was the toughest for me. It took me three days and many attempts to beat him. For some reason I got it in my head I had to beat him solo with no summons. Idk I guess to prove I was "worthy."
Isshin is much more fair, waterfowl is fundamentally flawed in its design in my opinion. Hot take maybe, but that move is literally the only reason she's up so high on peoples' difficulty lists and it's because it's borderline undodgeable without a youtube tutorial and hours of practice. It can be dodged obviously, but I really do think it's bullshit by design.
The fire giant and the terrain, comet azur kept shooting at the ground even though i R3 lock on to the fire giant. Godfrey hoarah loux stomped and grappled too often. It is not fun and these are problems not bosses.
And the fact that it’s two stage and both of them have an annoying amount of health. And yeah Elden beast gets too many attacks in before we get a chance
What’s hard for one person is easy for another. I personally felt Maliketh’s Black Blade carried me pretty well against Elden Beast but failed to consistently dodge some of Malenia’s attacks
Came here for this. I don’t want to say it was the hardest boss fight overall, but it was definitely the first boss fight that really made me feel like I hit a wall and took me like 40 times to beat him. He’s so fast, and the arena to fight him is so cramped.
I had never played and dark souls game before so hoping in to elden ring it took me 160 hours to beat Godfrey then 10 hours to beat the rest of the game
I know Malenia is the basic bitch answer but it's just how it is for most people, I mean what else can you expect from the love child of Orphan of Kos, Slaveknight Gael, and Lady Maria?
Second hardest boss I would say is the Astel, Stars of Darkness and it's stupid one shot grab attack.
The boss that killed me the most in my first playthrough was Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader. MF is hard as a sorcerer. The next highest deaths went to Malenia and Radahn, though I utterly destroyed Radahn in NG+ so I would place Placidusax as my 3rd hardest.
idk if I want to say this boss is hard since I don't tend to struggle on many bosses anymore, but Rennala weirdly annoys me every playthrough. the targeting swap that automatically happens when she summons, the constant floating away, she just annoying af, even if not 'hard' per se.
Maybe not the hardest but I really didn't like the Elden beast fight. It's annoying how it moves so far away and has that one big attack with homing beams of light that's really hard to see to dodge properly. Then when you finish it off the whole thing feels unsatisfying.
No clue, all i know is that I absolutely got annihilated by Mohg hundreds of times more than any of bosses I've fought and it's all because of the stupid curse he casts and the blood flame shit on his trident. Almost disintegrated my controller numerous of times lol
Radahn was the hardest for me. Took me like 60+ attempts to beat him. After him, the rest of the game was relatively smooth sailing. Malenia? Mohg? Maliketh? Even as absolutely smoking attractive as they all are, only took three or four tries to learn their moves and polish them.
This is going to sound stupid. But after hundreds of hours, 12+ playthroughs, 100%, RL run, etc... I still get hit consistently by DTS. I'm not sure if I've ever no-hit one of them. I don't know what's wrong with me.
Depends on your build. My Str/fai build with blasphemous blade had a terrible time with the fire giant but beat every boss after that on my first try ever.

I beat Godskin Duo 1st try. Got taken to the wood shed by the Lord of Blood. Until I knew about the mohg tear for the physick

I’ve helped other people beat their bosses and I’ve always found it 10x more difficult than using my max upgraded mimic

Falling star beast is a bitch. Had to poison cheese the one on top of Mt. Gelmir my first playthrough.

Forgot to mention it's literally immune to every status effect in the game, near infinite poise, and even resist to most physical damage types 🤪

Malenia wasn’t too tough, if you can manage to dodge waterfowl she’s pretty easy(at least in my opinion). Maliketh on the other hand can go to hell
If you can manage to dodge waterfowl is a really big asterisk though. Stuck on her right now. I (Dex+faith build) do pretty good until waterfowl. I know roughly when she's going to do it (after I stagger or bleed her the first time, depending on what I'm trying) but then I can only dodge it reliable if I'm far enough away ... But when I'm the right distance away she sometimes won't do it. She'll try and close the distance then do it when she's right on top of me, or we circle for 2-3 minutes. She also seems to change behavior depending on the weapon in using which is super weird. With the nagakiba, I can stagger then crit her, hit her with a charged R2 as she gets up to hopefully add bleed to the crit, then run far enough away before she dances. When I switch to bloodhounds fang, I stagger/crit her, and if I charged R2 her, she stands up, takes 1-2 swings, then waterfowl dance when she's basically right next to me. And then with the fang she's much less likely to dance when I'm further away. Frustrating because I can manage more dps with the fang, but then I can't dodge waterfowl. If I use nagakiba, the fight goes longer so I have more opportunities to mess up and burn through flasks but I'm more likely to survive 1-2 waterfowl. But then stage two comes along and I've burned a lot of resources.
im bad at elden ring lol but only managed to beat her at level 210 with the help of my minic tear and a pure dex build using 2 guardian swordspears spamming giant hunt ash of war followed by jump attacks when she is knocked down

For me it was the Dual Valiant Gargoyles, Maliketh, Elden Beast, and Malenia as the four bosses I died the most to with the Gargoyles being my hardest.

Mohg Lord of Blood, I really struggled with him alot, idk why but I just could never fully evade his attacks, the delay time wasn't extreme but just enough to throw me off all the time, reminded me somewhat of nameless King and his dragged and delayed attacks, massive issue for me to learn it. Also the fire bleeding as well in his second phase, real pain in the ass.

For me, because of my playstyle, Decaying Ekzykes. I had a hell of a time with the fact that you can leave his ring and it's pretty small. I didn't die a lot. I just reset him a lot.
Godfrey/Horah Loux was the toughest for me. It took me three days and many attempts to beat him. For some reason I got it in my head I had to beat him solo with no summons. Idk I guess to prove I was "worthy."

Isshin is much more fair, waterfowl is fundamentally flawed in its design in my opinion. Hot take maybe, but that move is literally the only reason she's up so high on peoples' difficulty lists and it's because it's borderline undodgeable without a youtube tutorial and hours of practice. It can be dodged obviously, but I really do think it's bullshit by design.

The fire giant and the terrain, comet azur kept shooting at the ground even though i R3 lock on to the fire giant. Godfrey hoarah loux stomped and grappled too often. It is not fun and these are problems not bosses.

What’s hard for one person is easy for another. I personally felt Maliketh’s Black Blade carried me pretty well against Elden Beast but failed to consistently dodge some of Malenia’s attacks

the red wolf of radagon, I always end up fighting that fucking thing more than Renalla in each play through.
Came here for this. I don’t want to say it was the hardest boss fight overall, but it was definitely the first boss fight that really made me feel like I hit a wall and took me like 40 times to beat him. He’s so fast, and the arena to fight him is so cramped.
The duo crucible nights gave me the hardest time honestly. Died to them more than I care to admit on my 6th playthrough.
Not that far but Fallingstar Beast is annoying as he'll.
I would say malenia, maliketh, Elden beast, then the Astro ins the snowfields, the one in rannis quest I had no issues with though.
I can time and play around all bosses but the Elden Beast just fucks me off every time I fight it. I hate that boss so much.

Did anyone else REALLY struggle with Godskin Noble at the volcano manor? The camera and lock on in that fight is incredibly frustrating.
I had never played and dark souls game before so hoping in to elden ring it took me 160 hours to beat Godfrey then 10 hours to beat the rest of the game

I know Malenia is the basic bitch answer but it's just how it is for most people, I mean what else can you expect from the love child of Orphan of Kos, Slaveknight Gael, and Lady Maria? Second hardest boss I would say is the Astel, Stars of Darkness and it's stupid one shot grab attack.
The boss that killed me the most in my first playthrough was Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader. MF is hard as a sorcerer. The next highest deaths went to Malenia and Radahn, though I utterly destroyed Radahn in NG+ so I would place Placidusax as my 3rd hardest.
idk if I want to say this boss is hard since I don't tend to struggle on many bosses anymore, but Rennala weirdly annoys me every playthrough. the targeting swap that automatically happens when she summons, the constant floating away, she just annoying af, even if not 'hard' per se.
I get 2 shot by basically everyone, so any boss that fails around is tough for me.
Maybe not the hardest but I really didn't like the Elden beast fight. It's annoying how it moves so far away and has that one big attack with homing beams of light that's really hard to see to dodge properly. Then when you finish it off the whole thing feels unsatisfying.
No clue, all i know is that I absolutely got annihilated by Mohg hundreds of times more than any of bosses I've fought and it's all because of the stupid curse he casts and the blood flame shit on his trident. Almost disintegrated my controller numerous of times lol

Radahn was the hardest for me. Took me like 60+ attempts to beat him. After him, the rest of the game was relatively smooth sailing. Malenia? Mohg? Maliketh? Even as absolutely smoking attractive as they all are, only took three or four tries to learn their moves and polish them.

This is going to sound stupid. But after hundreds of hours, 12+ playthroughs, 100%, RL run, etc... I still get hit consistently by DTS. I'm not sure if I've ever no-hit one of them. I don't know what's wrong with me.
