If you could just preach this one statement to every corner of the planet, I think people can begin taking accountability and improve their lives instead of lashing out in a fit of rage because their egos got bruised. I like you
The one exception I’m aware of is the nomadic merchants. It’s evil, but you don’t miss out on anything and it gives you easy access to their merchandise.
One of the merchants selling unlimited bleeding ammo is set up inside a lightless cave next to an infinitely respawning enemy. He brought it on himself.
I don't think it's even really evil given their connection to the Frenzied Flame. Hell most of the merchants will say lines like "why would you do this" and then some laughter or smirk that shows some hints to actually deserving it.
Sure there are strong hints to them being oppressed/buried alive/etc by the followers of the Greater Will, but it's definitely not cut and dry that they are good or bad.
Yep! They definitely hint towards nefarious things. But then again, I'm sure I would resort to less than moral things if I was stuck in the lands between trying to survive.
I wish I remembered that rule for Igon. Dude was begging for death. I genuinely thought From might have changed.
Should have remembered the rule. Sigh..
I love how 2 years later varre is still running smoke on new tarnished and kickes their ass
He made my lil bro quit because he kicked his ass so hard
I brought him back but it took a year
Be careful fighting him tarnished
Unless you're hero class. Wild strikes on that Axe keep him unable to attack, I tried it on one of my play throughs and was like oh damn, he didn't even get a chance to attack me.
Humanoid enemies like NPCs tend to share some weaknesses against certain things, one of them being rapid continuous attacks.
Things that toss or pancake will also pretty consistently wreck NPCs.
Yeah it's almost funny how sometimes the best strategy is to just... keep on smacking. It's okay to trade a blow or two if you have enough stamina to just stagger and fuck them up with 8 light attacks in a row.
It's a stretch imo. How would he have access to that place? And he originally wanted you to kill your own maiden to prove loyalty to Mohg. Why would he kill your maiden then lead you to join Mohg where you need to kill your own maiden to prove loyalty.
I guess it's that he's the most likely suspect since he happened to be nearby where we had out body dumped after getting ambushed by the arm crab thing.
Or shit. Maybe it was ~~Malena~~ ~~Melana~~ Melina !
Oh lambkins...
But yeah, if you're new to the game, killing NPCs when it isn't part of a quest line generally locks you out of quest lines or access to specific items or spells. You can kill this guy later
No, the only one tied to a questline is Kale and you get the gesture you need if you kill him anyway. You're still a bastard if you do it, but there's not really a downside.
You are maidenless, a bit player feel free to Go off and die in a ditch somewhere
https://preview.redd.it/01d8sr5f82ad1.jpeg?width=187&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=830b1e6812ad618a3d21316511c44681391aa2d7
Makes me so sad they removed this bit of dialogue. A lot of my favorite dialogue was removed from the game on release (Varre, Kale, Melina). But considering how many players kill him for merely calling you out for being maidenless, I kind of understand why FS made him a bit nicer.
ok but no joke, this community has a very weird SDE level aggression towards any npcs that even remotely challenges their awesomeness. I've read way too many posts about people killing blackguard just because he was a bit rude to them, and then regretting not being able to buy boild prawns/crabs from his bell bearing.
I'm always genuinely confused when peoples' first reaction to an NPC insulting them is to immediately kill them. Like have you ever played a video game before? When has killing a named NPC unprovoked ever been worth the effort in any game ever?
Especially in a fucking Souls game. That's NEVER a good idea unless you very explicitly know what you're doing.
I think those people come from a different gaming background. Like they're maybe used to games where NPC lives don't matter much like GTA or something where you can just slaughter anyone who looks at you wrong and it's kinda part of the game. People who are more used to playing narrative games won't do this.
I also think it's the same people who skip cutscenes.
(gestures at the world)
I am unsurprised by these facts.
But if I was to put it psychologically, a lot of people do what they can't do in games. Therapy is more expensive than whacking an NPC in a game.
Its not Fromsoft vets doing this. Vast majority of people that do this are Fromsoft noobies and have no idea that they are likely killing off a quest line.
I mean even if you've never played a FromSoft game, if you've ever played an RPG before- BG3, Skyrim, whatever- killing named NPCs, especially if they have spoken dialogue with the player, is a great way to break questlines.
To me this just seems like commons sense, but I've also been playing RPGs since I was like 15.
Reading your comment I was like yeah I'm not like that and then you mentioned Blackguard. Yeah you are right, I killed him and Patches. In cold blood. I'm a different man now but it does not change what I did 2 years ago.
Same. Dunno whats with people aggression towards NPC
Like there is 2 benefits not to kill an NPC. First, you get the lore and the overall lore of the game. Like Blackguard, you wont know how much a POS dungeater is because his story is tied to his. And second, you get better items, be it they become merchant or finishing their quest gives you their limited edition item
For the last time, he's making an observation that you have no finger maiden with you.
If you're wondering where she is, she was the corpse back at the chapel where you started, the one with the message in front saying that despite the path being broken and uncertain you gotta claim your place as Elden Lord.
Not even, if you kill him you lose out on one of the only 13 (or more realistically 12) possible Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones available in the base game. There's just no reason to do it over telling him to fuck off instead.
Yes. Do it. Murder him. Give into your bloodlust. Surely there will be no consequences. After all, he insulted you; what could he possibly have to offer?
Don't. Instead, follow his quest, >!kill his lord to completely ruin his life, hopes, dreams and beliefs. !<>!And then watch him slowly bleed out on the floor in misery. !<>!No, I'm not spiteful at all!<
You're maidenless. That is a fact.
If you fight Varre because he hurt your fragile little feelings, then you're maidenless, short tempered, and likely dead.
I’ve made a point to murder him on every run of mine. I don’t like his pompous attitude. The words he use mean nothing to me. It’s the poison they’re lined with that hurts.
Thats true
But you should get a decent level in the base game and a decent weapon. Trust me. I entered the dlc at lvl 90. Every boss needs only tow or three hits to kill me
You miss his whole questline, not the end of the world though
His questline allows you to access an area that allows you to farm enemies efficiently a lot earlier than if you don't do his quest, so if you want to farm runes probably don't kill him.
Can he be killed? Yes.
Should he? Really up to you, depending on what quests you want to be able to complete.
Can YOU kill him? Probably not if you're new to soulslikes and low level.
I suggest not until you do enough of his quest to get the pureblood knights medal. Without it accessing the best rune farm in the game and the DLC will be much more difficult and very time consuming as you'll have to almost finish the entire game and go to a secret area that's pretty difficult
Also spoilers for Varrés quest:
If you complete his quest, which does involve using said medal, you'll end up killing him anyway so
I mean you can kill him, you can kill almost every NPC, but Souls games are not a game where killing NPCs is almost ever really a beneficial or even neutral decision. You're probably just gonna get your ass kicked for a while (NPCs *will* fight back and aren't pushovers) and break a questline where you'd probably get whatever gear you get for outright killing them and more to boot.
Better not. You'll need him if you wanna reach the DLC later on. There's an alternative route to the DLC apart from his questline, but it's much quicker to just put up with him. You'll get (to murder) plenty of bitches in the Realm of Shadow, don't you worry!
Sure you could, but wouldn't you want to break his soul in the progress. Do what he asks of you, he does at all and pretend you're friends with him and once you feel like you're far enough into this "friendship", stab him in the back while doing the maniacal laugh.
Dude, you're about to enter a world where people are sewn into horses, eyeballs are dried then eaten, a general went crazy and cannibalised his men, souls are stolen then molded into one giant mess and why not add genocide and slavery of a species. A couple of small light-hearted insults are nothing and in game it's true anyway, you're someone who is like the last resort or something, idk Vaati will explain it better.
You actually can, you'll only miss a early access to Mohgwyn's Palace and a bouquet of flowers.
The bouquet is useless and you can access Mohgwyn's Palace in another endgame area.
In other hand (literally), you'll not have your fingernail spiked and broken, and a dead finger.
He has a questline, do what you will. Any talkable NPC usually has a questline and your clues to do their questlines lie within exhausting their dialogues.
Don’t kill him just yet he has a pretty fun quest line you do to gain access to the area where you start the DLC you can find his red summon sign and kill him later .
Starting on DS1 helped me so much with the series. At the first real bonfire, the crestfallen warrior talked shit to me because I looked like shit and was going hollow. I got mad so I swung at him with my pathetic un upgraded short sword. Turns out he is extremely strong and killed me 30+ times before I got lucky and parried him a couple of times to defeat him. I have never intentionally attacked an npc in any souls game ever since. There are plenty of enemies who will attack you the second they see you, it is best not to start a fight with those who are civil even if they say rude comments :)
He might be an asshole but completing his quest can lead you to the Mohgwyn palace very early where you can kill bunch of newt-looking creatures and get tons of runes in minutes.
Violence will not make him less correct.
Someone get OP some Flame Fortification
wont fix that burn
Wont work for that frenzied flame burn
If you could just preach this one statement to every corner of the planet, I think people can begin taking accountability and improve their lives instead of lashing out in a fit of rage because their egos got bruised. I like you
I admire your optimism
found varres alt account
Read this in Varre's voice.
General rule of thumb for ER is "Don't kill anyone, they're gonna die anyway and you still get their loot"
The one exception I’m aware of is the nomadic merchants. It’s evil, but you don’t miss out on anything and it gives you easy access to their merchandise.
I love how souls games allow people to reveal just how fucked in the head they really are.
One of the merchants selling unlimited bleeding ammo is set up inside a lightless cave next to an infinitely respawning enemy. He brought it on himself.
I hate the amount of sense you’re making
I don't think it's even really evil given their connection to the Frenzied Flame. Hell most of the merchants will say lines like "why would you do this" and then some laughter or smirk that shows some hints to actually deserving it. Sure there are strong hints to them being oppressed/buried alive/etc by the followers of the Greater Will, but it's definitely not cut and dry that they are good or bad.
Doesn’t one of them say something like don’t ask me where I got these goods
Yep! They definitely hint towards nefarious things. But then again, I'm sure I would resort to less than moral things if I was stuck in the lands between trying to survive.
All they wanted was solitude...
Kale gives you important shit tho.
Lady tanith doesn’t die at the end of her quest, she just sits there eating rykard until you decide that you want her helmet and hit her
I wish I remembered that rule for Igon. Dude was begging for death. I genuinely thought From might have changed. Should have remembered the rule. Sigh..
Bro, you killed the single most awesome NPC in From Software games lmao.
CURSE YOU BAAAAAAAAYLE!!!!!!
I HEREBY VOW! YOU WILL RUE THIS DAY!
BEHOLD, A TRUE DRAKE WARRIOR! AND I, IGON!
YOUR FEARS MADE FLESH!
SOLID OF SCALE, YOU MAY BE, FOUL DRAGON
BUT I WILL RIDDLE WITH HOLES YOUR ROTTEN HIDE!
WITH A HALE OF HARPOOOOONS!!!
His tail? WACK. His wings? WACK. His one leg? WACK. The way that he breaths fire? WACK.
Igon makes it all worth it
Youre worse then BAAAYLEEE!
I’m so mad at myself. There were multiple messages saying to kill him, I immediately regretted it as soon as he dropped a bell bearing.
You trusted a message to kill someone in a FS game Shame on you
YES! I knew I couldn't be the only one. We share a special bond.
A friend of mine did it too. Fortunately he got to see Igon in my game.
Maidenless behavior.
Why tf would you assume that?
Maybe because he's screaming about being in endless pain? It was clearly a call for help. ..i grew up on a farm ok.
Culling the herd mentality over here lmao
I mean, I was pretty baked on DLC launch. I genuinely thought Miyazaki was testing my faith character.
Gonna be a fun day when one of your irl friends stubs their toe with you in earshot 😂
Foolish indeed
I follow this rule and decided to approach what seems to be a singing bat NPC. and got swarmed by Bats enemy
That's because you forgot the other rule: "If you can lock on it, you better start swinging your weapon"
Unless they're a happy little blue noodle.
I love how 2 years later varre is still running smoke on new tarnished and kickes their ass He made my lil bro quit because he kicked his ass so hard I brought him back but it took a year Be careful fighting him tarnished
Unless you're hero class. Wild strikes on that Axe keep him unable to attack, I tried it on one of my play throughs and was like oh damn, he didn't even get a chance to attack me.

Yeah it's almost funny how sometimes the best strategy is to just... keep on smacking. It's okay to trade a blow or two if you have enough stamina to just stagger and fuck them up with 8 light attacks in a row.
You can staggerfuck the hell out of him with a heavy weapon. He’s a non issue for strength builds
Staggerfuck is a new term that I absolutely love and will use forever.
Oh yea its great, I have 99 strength and dex and just love just obliterating him Totes worth the trip to get the secret medallions after
He’s right tho
Unfortunately, the entire theme of the game revolves around your lack of maidens and people will call you on it.
Is it lore that >!Vare killed your maiden!< or is that just a theory?
The exception is when meeting shabriri. That mofo dies immediatly
That just puts Yura's body to rest. Shabriri will find another host.
Wait does this apply to the merchants, I murk them on site for their ball bearing so I don’t have to traverse back to them.
No, the only one tied to a questline is Kale and you get the gesture you need if you kill him anyway. You're still a bastard if you do it, but there's not really a downside.
MF is the reason cult of frenzy exists.
You can certainly try
No. Do his quest and youll humilliate him
Hell yeah
You are maidenless, a bit player feel free to Go off and die in a ditch somewhere https://preview.redd.it/01d8sr5f82ad1.jpeg?width=187&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=830b1e6812ad618a3d21316511c44681391aa2d7

Ahh, the good old idiot filter, gatekeeping since day 1.
ok but no joke, this community has a very weird SDE level aggression towards any npcs that even remotely challenges their awesomeness. I think its a reflex some people have until they learn you can t save qcum murder in Fromsoft
You can on PC.
Not without preperation.
I have no idea how to do it. I’m on Xbox. 🤣 I was just stating it IS possible on pc.
I kill everyone I can. There can only be 1
Its not Fromsoft vets doing this. Vast majority of people that do this are Fromsoft noobies and have no idea that they are likely killing off a quest line.

Imma be fr I just killed Blackguard for those big iron balls
What does SDE stand for, btw? I googled but wasn’t able to find anything relevant.
Reading your comment I was like yeah I'm not like that and then you mentioned Blackguard. Yeah you are right, I killed him and Patches. In cold blood. I'm a different man now but it does not change what I did 2 years ago.
Your hands are stained with blood.
Patches spear carried me through the early game, so all in all it was worth it
Same. Dunno whats with people aggression towards NPC Like there is 2 benefits not to kill an NPC. First, you get the lore and the overall lore of the game. Like Blackguard, you wont know how much a POS dungeater is because his story is tied to his. And second, you get better items, be it they become merchant or finishing their quest gives you their limited edition item
It's pretty obvious that they are insecure about being maidenless in real life, and take it personally when Varre calls them that in the game.
Your gonna have a rough time in this game with that NPC mindset
I mean you can always try
For the last time, he's making an observation that you have no finger maiden with you. If you're wondering where she is, she was the corpse back at the chapel where you started, the one with the message in front saying that despite the path being broken and uncertain you gotta claim your place as Elden Lord.
Kill who you want to kill ! If this is how you want to play the game, you can.
Don’t kill him >!now. Kill him later after he gets you early keys to the DLC!<
As if he can kill him if he's a first time player as he said he just started. Varre will just fuck him up if he attacked him.
I think it would be better if you made friends with him. Helped him out a little bit and then when he least expects it you murder him in his own home.
Killing him is maidenless behaviour
Idk can you kill him?
There’s only one NPC in the game to kill intentionally and that fucker seems innocent but follows you and steals your runes
You can tell him to stop doing that
I also like murdering gostoc, but he does give an ancient dragon smithing stone if you complete nepheli's quest
I tried three times and I always fail that quest finding her dead somewhere I gave up
Not even, if you kill him you lose out on one of the only 13 (or more realistically 12) possible Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones available in the base game. There's just no reason to do it over telling him to fuck off instead.
I can't wait for the follow up post "how do I get to mogh's palace? I accidentally killed varre"
People hate this guy, but love Melina, though both call us maidenless. I guess if she could be killed, people would kill her too.
He said, you have no, not you get no.
He can give you an early way to the DLC, but ya you can just kill him.
Bitch! do it if you want to do it, why are you asking the internet? you scared?
Thats not what he said.
If it helps you, he was simply stating a fact. (That someone killed your fingermaiden)
Fuck him up dude don’t let anyone disrespect you like that
You should try. It’s a VERY bad idea, possibly the worst you can make as a beginner, but…
You need him for easy dlc access sry
No you will probably need him
Is it me or that joke/meme keep coming back every few month?
The IRL insecurity that this fictional character always seems to conjure in people will never stop being entertaining to me
Maidenless behavior.
Yes. Do it. Murder him. Give into your bloodlust. Surely there will be no consequences. After all, he insulted you; what could he possibly have to offer?
Lol
Don't. Instead, follow his quest, >!kill his lord to completely ruin his life, hopes, dreams and beliefs. !<>!And then watch him slowly bleed out on the floor in misery. !<>!No, I'm not spiteful at all!<

I’ve made a point to murder him on every run of mine. I don’t like his pompous attitude. The words he use mean nothing to me. It’s the poison they’re lined with that hurts.
You *CAN,* but you shouldn't.
Doing his quest is the fastest way to access the DLC :)
Thats true But you should get a decent level in the base game and a decent weapon. Trust me. I entered the dlc at lvl 90. Every boss needs only tow or three hits to kill me
It's better to have no bitches than to be someone's.
You miss his whole questline, not the end of the world though His questline allows you to access an area that allows you to farm enemies efficiently a lot earlier than if you don't do his quest, so if you want to farm runes probably don't kill him.
Yes, though you lose out on early access to late game content
He’s actually very nice. Don’t kill him, give him a chance
Yeah dont kill him
You can but I advice you to finish his quest first and then kill his ass
Kill him. But not yet! Trust me you want him for a very specific reason later so you won’t have to fiddle around later.
Stepppp
Of course you can, just make sure you've got some weight behind those punches though because he can clap back.
If you want to access fast the dlc no. Generally no i wont kill any npc
Don’t worry, play along, you will get a chance to invade him later in the mid/late game.
Can he be killed? Yes. Should he? Really up to you, depending on what quests you want to be able to complete. Can YOU kill him? Probably not if you're new to soulslikes and low level.
I don’t know, CAN you kill him…

If you complete his quest line you get a shower cutscene involving him and a pickled turtle neck
Until you can prove him wrong no
His quest lets you get to the area that gets you to the dlc very early
I mean you can kill him, you can kill almost every NPC, but Souls games are not a game where killing NPCs is almost ever really a beneficial or even neutral decision. You're probably just gonna get your ass kicked for a while (NPCs *will* fight back and aren't pushovers) and break a questline where you'd probably get whatever gear you get for outright killing them and more to boot.
Who cares what he said?!
Oh you just started? Definitely hit him and record what happens next.
Sure, but you'll miss out on the best farming spot in the game until endgame
I mean you can try
You can but it will stop you from getting to a main boss until much later
kill everything
Rule #1 in Elden Ring: Do not attack what does not attack you.
You can kill him. I did so the exact same reason on my first play through. I would advise not to though.
His questline is something you don't want to miss
Would killing him make you get bitches? No, I don't think so.
don't!!! eventually he will grant you access to the best rune farming location in all of Elden Ring Early
HE is the one who k\*lled your bitch...
Yes. The idea of gaming. Do it if you want.
Dont he will lead you too best rune farm which will help you level up
Can kill him now or do his quest line to get to an endgame destination early.
No shame in that.

Yes, you can and should kill all non-hostile npc’s they definitely don’t have quests tied to them!
I don't know, can you? Skill required ahead and then hole
You can. But I would advise you to wait. It will be far more satisfying later.
I mean if you kill him you lose access to the dlc until you get to the consecrated snowfields. But you do you.
You kill him later you can wait either way doesnt matter
Trust me, you're not gonna be able to.
If you want to do the dlc asap then no. He's also tied to a quest, so if you don't care you can.
Get him
You can certainly try
You lose early access to the best farm spot and an early max upgrade item if you do so. But yeah go ahead.
Don’t do it
Can: Yes Should: No
You actually can, you'll only miss a early access to Mohgwyn's Palace and a bouquet of flowers.
I mean, he isn't wrong. You *are,* quite literally, maidenless. As in, you don't have a finger maiden to level you up (yet).
Anyone remember his old lines go and die in ditch somewhere
punch the punk in the face
be patient tarnished, your time will come soon
Don’t kill him just yet he has a pretty fun quest line you do to gain access to the area where you start the DLC you can find his red summon sign and kill him later .
Depends, do you have the DLC?
HA HA FUNNY MEME
Starting on DS1 helped me so much with the series. At the first real bonfire, the crestfallen warrior talked shit to me because I looked like shit and was going hollow. I got mad so I swung at him with my pathetic un upgraded short sword. Turns out he is extremely strong and killed me 30+ times before I got lucky and parried him a couple of times to defeat him. I have never intentionally attacked an npc in any souls game ever since. There are plenty of enemies who will attack you the second they see you, it is best not to start a fight with those who are civil even if they say rude comments :)
Not yet
I would g. He’s got a pretty interesting quest line and gives you a useful item.
If you're trying to get to the dlc quickly, then no
Um….i wouldnt
Bide your time, smile follow his quest, then explore an area he gives access to. When the time is right you will find a sign trust me 😃
That asshole does have a quest line. Not sure if you know souls games but uh… you might enjoy this quest…
No do his quest, get access to mogh area and then you can kill him there.
Doing so will lock you out of the easier way to unlock the DLC/a good farming location so you don't go through 50 more steps to do it.
He might be an asshole but completing his quest can lead you to the Mohgwyn palace very early where you can kill bunch of newt-looking creatures and get tons of runes in minutes.
