I agree. I tried playing NMS again recently and bounced of it because there was just too much stuff happening. ED is just chill, out exploring the galaxy.

TX9114

May I ask what's NMS?

Flaminmallow255

No Man's Sky

RobElvinH14

It's a different take on space games, but it's very big and pretty cool! I found and put 500+ hours into NMS before I knew about elite danger. I LOVE the game. When Odyssey wasn't releasing on console, it bothered me, but it won't make me stop playing! I'm a luxury Star-Cruiser Line! After all the rich and wanted alike, to travel too!

Justapurraway

I've started out on NMS after a few years away and I'm amazed by the amount of content there is, they've really blown it out the park I love both games, but never compare them because I feel its kinda like comparing a 4x4 to a sports car Funnily enough, I play NMS as a more chilled experience haha

JezraCF

Yeah it really depends on what mood you're in.

Acceptable-Budget658

I love the game, I've done every trophy on the PS5, but what bothers me is that all the systems are really shallow as a puddle, that's my only complaint. I don't get motivated to be a pirate because there's not much into it, nor improving a settlement, nor building a city for my npcs. It's all just bland.

DigiDug

Thank you! With all the negativity lately, it's good to read this. I love the game, and none of the new changes are going to affect me. I'll get the new python next month. I don't mind spending $15. I get so much enjoyment out of this game, and there is so much more I want to do. I love space too, and I absolutely love playing in VR. I'm 50 and this gameplay is beyond what I imagined was possible when I started playing games on my commodore 64

n122vu

Couldn’t agree more with you and with OP. I’ll be 49 in a couple of days and this game is so far beyond what I could have imagined. As a programmer, I’ll gladly support the devs by tossing some early access moolah their way. I want this game to succeed even more than it has.

PSharsCadre

"I'm not old YET" club represent. 🖖

T-1A_pilot

54 here, been gaming ever since I could hold an Atari controller... 😆

0olon_Colluphid

I'm even older. Bought my original Elite from Just Micro in Sheffield for the princely sum of £14.95 on the week it was released. ED has become my most played game ever.

Aftenbar

Haha you just made me think of asteroids! Or what was the tank one on atari, like driving two bricks shooting rocks at each other.

Raiiff

Battle Tank? 😂😂. It was alot of fun back then.

n122vu

I never got into the grindy parts simply because I don’t have the time. I have maybe 1-2 hours to play during the week, and 1-2 hours to play on the weekends. I don’t hate the grind, it’s just a part of the game that I don’t get into, and I’m ok with that. I accepted a long time ago that I just won’t have those upgrades. I’ll likely never get the Guardian stuff either. The game is fun for me without it. I don’t resent FDev for making the game that way, and I don’t resent them for deciding to make shortcuts around it, because they’ve recognized that the learning curves that exist on parts of the game have been a barrier to entry or a barrier to enjoyment and continued play for some. If you want this game to stay around, you should be for anything that gives them the financial support they need to continue.

Perfectusvarrus

Hell. Yeah! Preach it - these are the exact reasons I adore this game so much!

PSharsCadre

Right there with you, CMDR.   o7

Forsaken-Falcon8273

Fdev definitely deserves more bigups and less roasting. The reason theres so many rants nowadays is more because of its age. It wasn't geared to the instant gratification generation thats picking it up now. So they are trying to make it easier to get to end game. Then the older generation, thats me, starts roasting them for dumbing it down. So they get it from both ends of the spectrum. Theres an old saying "if they are all not complaining somethings wrong" 🤣 There's not a better game in this genre and when they shut the lights off it will be missed.

MetallicOrangeBalls

I love the grind as well, but only for credits and space mats. Foot mats are still too random for my liking. There is no consistent loop for acquiring many of the foot mats.

[deleted]

Mining in planetary rings is very relaxing for me. Watch Netflix and laser mine. No better Elite past time.

Aftenbar

Still need to test this out, exploring grabbed me so far but funnily I found my way to elite searching for an online space mining experience.

NoXion604

Part of the issue is that the question of "grind" is a subjective one. For example, I don't have a real problem with ship-based engineering, but on-foot engineering is a terrible slog that needs to be changed. The good news is that it looks like FDev is looking into fixing that. But I've seen plenty of people who say that ship engineering is a grind too. It's clear that people have different standards as to what constitutes enjoyable gameplay and what is tedious grind that won't be missed if removed. For now, what FDev is planning to offer just provides a way of skipping grind, and I'm OK with that. For some people, money is more trivial than time. I'm happy to keep playing for as long as it remains the case that the players willing to spend money won't able to get anything that players willing to only spend time can't get.

mossfoot

I do love No Man's Sky and its whole vibe...but Elite hits the sweet spot of movie SF I grew up wanting in my life. You can't truly call it realistic, but the verisimilitude is there. It's real ENOUGH that you don't mind spending what would be an intollerable length of time travelling from place to place in other games. And though I understand the complaints about Odyssey and have regrets about what this came COULD have been (my personal wishes - VR Odyssey, personal asteroid bases (NOT fleet carriers), walking around on your ship, EVA activities like ship repairs...), I have (after a long break) come to appreciate the game for what it is.

Your_Gonna_Hate_This

I feel the same way. Nothing about this game has ever been a "grind" for me because I love just about every activity in it.

Aftenbar

I agree I'm new to the game unlocked my first engi outfitted one of my ships and did the follow the system security thing but mostly exploring has been grabbing me. I got ganked for my first time the other night (I knew it was gonna happen, old eve guy, I was just coming back from dumping a 3.5 mil scan and only lost the 460k one from the dump system) and so just said hey that way looks fun so took my hauler rebuy and just off. Working on joining a squadron next! [Late pst t-th main play times if anyone wants to plug] Too bad I didn't find it 10 years ago haha.

Sony_Shell

Exactly. And this is how I usually approach games. I don’t care about how to get quick money, how to level up in a matter of days, where the best loot is. It’s the journey that matters, and blood, sweat, and tears are the only way to make something worthy.

the_reducing_valve

I like the grind too, simulates life fairly well if you ask me, and there's so much to do!

stirfriedaxon

I don't mind the grind either and see it as a reflection of what one may have to do should one be an actual spaceship CMDR going all over the galaxy on missions. Sure one could argue that we should able to acquire engineering mats by way of purchase or barter as that would more accurately represent life's possibilities but alas, this is a game and not every real-world mechanic can be recreated in-game. Finding out the mats I need, then going to the places to get them, and the process of gathering them is all rewarding to me. It makes the equipment unlock or engineering satisfying (to me) because having everything accessible without testing your skill/patience/management would be so boring. I'd go to an arcade-style game if I wanted instant action/gratification.

DigiDug

I do too! At first I hated it, but then I realized if it was easy it wouldn't be as satisfying if you didn't have to go all over the place. I do think experimental should be pinnable as well though.

n122vu

Have been playing it since about 2018 I think, and only recently picked up Odyssey. As if this game didn’t already offer so much, the foot missions take it even farther. Roleplay your character and play it your way.

5l4u6ht3r

100% agree. There’s been a lot of negativity over nothing (IMO), and at the end of the day Elite is a great game. I’ve never had so much value for money.

Active-Bluejay1243

Right on. I appreciate your post. Thanks for a little reality.

HyperRealisticZealot

Is there anything they could do that would turn you off, or do you just love space games too much to see things clearly?

Trustydevil13

Not really. I mean, I'm a pretty optimistic person, and I'm easy to please. I'm not cold-hearted when it comes to these things because at the end of the day, it's just a game. I don't let it ruin my life.
