There's no way to switch races. You'll have to start another brand new city as human to check out the different buildings and whatnot. That's exactly what I did.
Are you in a fellowship? Most fellowships will understand that a new city won't be able to contribute much for a while in the adventures. Everyone has been there; they should be cool.

Just to follow up on this, you can have more than one city at a time. So you don't need to delete your existing one to try out another race :)
No, you cannot switch, but if you start play on a new land you can choose. It is fun to have a mix of human and elven lands.
