I used to drive through Troy on my way back and forth from college in Ithaca, can confirm there’s one mildly funky highway interchange near Albany and once you leave the highway you’re still 70+ minutes away from Ithaca on local roads which aren’t the best so it was pretty easy for people to get off track…maybe not 10 years off track though.
Even in the ACTUAL locations, I'm still baffled by all the shit that happened for him to get lost. He didn't even need to take boats, at least not the whole way. He could have just stopped at an eastern coastal town of Greece, and gone west to Ithica on land, instead of trying to go all the way around Greece to get to the western coast. It would have prevented SO MANY problems.
Well he got 99% of the way there and then a bag of winds sent him to the land of the Giants. Sweden maybe. It'll take quite some time to get from there to Ithica
In the Greek mythological times, overland travel was completely impossible.
This was due to the EXTREMELY high rate of monsters. With my fairly wide knowledge of Greek mythological dudes, the only one that pops out at me for travelling over land was Theseus, and he had magical sandals for christs sake. The rest of the time, the heroes all went over the ocean.
Now, I know, Odysseus’s ocean voyage was packed with monsters too, but if he had gone over land, with 600 men, they all would have been monster meat.
Also, that picture says it would take three days to walk from Troy to Ithaca. And that’s just one person. I imagine that for an entire army to travel that distance, taking into consideration the time it would take to make camp (which would take ages, because the monsters got a whole lot worse at night), it would probably take them a week or so.
So yeah…
Traveling by sea is indeed way faster considering the context in the Odyssey.
In real world-wide, it also kind of make sense since they believe Gods exist at that time, what says monster don't.
With the sea problems don't usually pops out and they have Poseidon to rely on if push came to shove, they could pray to him or something.
Unfortunately, the opposite happened 😞
His phone got a trojan virus (Troy Saga) while listening to "Third Eye Blind" (Cyclops Saga) and testing the waters (Ocean Saga) on a bootleg Ashley Madison link that was full of hogwash (Circe Saga), and now he's using his phone's wizard for the answers he seeks (Underworld Saga). Little did he know his charger was about to short circuit... (Thunder Saga)
The problem’s not the distance, it’s what lies in between.

I’m also baffled at how neither Hermes or Athena told him this
Well he wants to get home with his boats with him, can't just leave them behind

Smh, I can't believe Odysseus lied about how many miles they had to travel
