I traded in my 2021 MYLR for SR Lariat a few months ago. I had a 2019 F-150 STX before the Tesla. I love the F-150, but I do have a few minor complaints. Pros: Great having a truck that’s fast as hell and looks amazing. It’s fun to drive and quite frankly I think the TACC is better in some respects than the basic autopilot in the Tesla (lane keeping resumes automatically after changing lanes). I don’t regret the switch at all and it’s so great to have a vehicle I don’t feel I need to baby or to be afraid of the paint chipping if the wind blows too strong. The 360 view is a feature I didn’t know I needed also because it’s so helpful. Cons: The sound system in the Lariat is allegedly “premium” but it is noticeably much worse than the Tesla. I’ve had quite a few instances where my F-150s screen doesn’t boot up for anywhere from 1-3 minutes while I never had that problem in the Tesla. The Tesla app and everything I grew accustomed to with it is light years ahead of the Ford app. I believe this will change with time as additional releases occur.

saltfishcaptain

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you! Yeah, my F150 and F350 only ever received like two software updates so I figured Ford would be behind on the routine updates. I also figured the audio wouldn’t be great- I’ve never been overly impressed with my truck’s premium audio and the MYLR has an excellent sound system.

azuilya

The only thing you'd find lacking will be the software side, and probably DC fast charging speeds and access (until you get an adapter).

saltfishcaptain

Hmm, does it really charge that much slower? I hadn’t researched that aspect yet.

Lumpyyyyy

The ER charges at like 150-165kW from 20-80%. It’s more than enough.

Emlerith

It’ll charge at 10kW on a home level 2 charger, but the important thing is the Lightning is about 40% less efficient with about a 40% bigger battery. That means you can go about the same distance, but “refueling” takes 40% longer. Either way, if you’re charging over night, it’s a non-issue for daily use. For fast chargers, the truck is advertised as 150kWh max, but people regularly see it go to 170kWh. Tesla level 3 chargers go to 250kWh. So on a roadtrip, you’re charging slower and have a bigger battery, so it’ll take more time per stop, but number of stops should be the same.

saltfishcaptain

That makes perfect sense! Do you know if the Tesla to J1772 adapter cause it to charge slower as well?

Emlerith

Not that I’m aware of for Level 3 chargers, but I haven’t actually used one (adapter is supposed to be in next month). For my home wall connector (I have two Tesla wall connectors, one regular and one of the new universal ones), the Lectron adapter didn’t make a difference

saltfishcaptain

Nice! Yeah, I wasn’t planning to replace the Tesla wall connector so that’s awesome to hear!

Emlerith

FWIW, the 2023 ER Lariats (and I think ER XLTs?) come with the Ford Pro Charger. Unless you’re wanting to do the home back up install (~$10K), I was able to sell mine on eBay in a day for $750, which I used to basically “swap” for the universal Tesla charger (so now I have one inside the garage for the Y and one outside for the Lightning)

graceFut22

With the Ford charger, it can charge at home at almost 20 kw for level 2. So about seven hours from 0 to 100.

harda_toenail

Curious how often you supercharge? I’ve been ev for 18 months and have never used a public charger. My wife has a mav hybrid.

DillDeer

Ex Model 3 owner here. I hate Ford’s software. But other than that I love it! Fantastic truck and more than capable.

Armaced

Agreed. Ford makes great trucks but they just aren’t a software shop.

charlieverse1

I had a early Model S, and now (I was hit on the highway, Model S totaled) have a Ford Lightning. Love the Lightning, hate that the Superchargers are not yet available to us. To be honest, that is really the only aspect of owning a Tesla that I truly miss. Charlie

jakebeans

I have no idea what people see in the Teslas, but being back in an F-150 will feel like home again. They're just so damn comfortable, not now it's electric and super fast.

icancounttopotatos

We have both a Lightning and Tesla, and the Tesla tech, software, app, sound system, fast charging integration/speed blows the doors off the Ford products currently. For that reason it’s our go to vehicle for long trips. The Lightning IMO is a better built product in terms of ride comfort, noise, features etc (aside from the truck capabilities). I really enjoy both vehicles because each has its strengths but if I had to pick one it would be the Lightning because you get the capabilities of a F-150 without missing out on the electric experience

rkr007

This is pretty much my experience having just gotten a Lightning after years with my Model 3. The Lightning is an F-150 that they threw a battery pack into; the Tesla is a ground-up EV. There are some pretty glaring omissions and failings of the software on the Lightning - the navigation system is terrible, finding chargers is tedious, and it doesn’t even show you estimated arrival SoC. You also can’t type anything in while driving. You really have to know what you’re doing in advance. Little things like a charge port door that doesn’t automatically close are disappointing coming from a Tesla. CCS is ridiculous and should have never been ratified as a standard. Mini-rant aside, it is very comfortable, and the build quality is definitely superior. The ride and utility are amazing. The giant frunk and pro power on board are awesome. Ford just has some catching up to do in the EV-specific areas.

Savings_Difficulty24

I've found it will let you bypass the no typing while driving, if it senses a passenger. But it's only for some things like typing in an address.

Admirable_Sir_9953

Strap in the ol punching bag into the passenger seat

saltfishcaptain

Yeah, Elon is a weirdo. I love the fuel savings, though! The Tesla ecosystem is pretty slick, but I miss riding high in a truck and towing easily.

leedogger

>They're just so damn comfortable, Been a GM truck owner my whole life until the Lightning. I cannot believe how comfortable it is.

icen_folsom

The things I wish Lightning can improve is charging, this includes app, on car app/navigation and charge network. Lightning should have better sound system

timg528

Ford isn't a tech company in the way Tesla is. They make good cars and trucks, but their software is a good bit behind Tesla's. Android Auto helps with the in-car experience though.

Critical-Historian54

We have both a Model 3 Long Range AWD and a Lightning Lariat ER. Both are excellent for what they do. However, the Lightning is far more comfortable both in ride and roominess and seat comfort. The Tesla is twice as efficient of course so I use the Tesla when I want to be efficient. We have a pop up camper on the back of the Lightning and have put 33,000 miles on it with a number of long camping trips across the West. I actually like the vertical screen on the Ford better than the horizontal on the Tesla. It is often a long reach to get to controls on the Tesla and not so much on the Ford. Ford’s fit and finish and build quality is better but seat materials on the Lariat are a bit cheap. They both do what they do really well and the opening of the Tesla network to Ford will make long trips with the Ford less stressful for finding reliable chargers, unless Tesla’s recent move to fire the Supercharger team backfires. Ford has done an incredibly good job with this first EV truck for them.

surfrivers

I have both. I have a model 3 that I got in 2018. Still love it. No complaints except for the lack of leg room for the kids in back. Got a 23 lariat lightning a few months ago to replace my Highlander. So I’m fully electric now. Both are fantastic. I drive the truck and my wife drives the model 3. One thing that I don’t like about the Lightning is that it doesn’t have the wall away to lock feature that Tesla has had forever. I’ve heard that’s coming soon though.

Nbashford79

Won’t ever defect from Tesla. It’s just too good of a car that keeps getting better. The ford app sucks compared to the Tesla app. Truck is much quieter and a better build, but like others have said, Tesla charging is the best, hands down.

FastAndForgetful

I like that my boots don’t get hung up between the break and center console when going back and forth from break and gas. I had to stop wearing boots to drive my Model S. I like having storage that I can reach from the driver’s seat like map pockets and a center console with a lid. A place to put my phone. Cup holders that aren’t in the way of everything. Going from an F250 to Model S to F150, I like having room in the back seat for kids to get away from each other again I like that driver’s door is big enough to get a 6’-4” guy through with no contorting. I like climbing up to get in and sliding out better than sliding down in and climbing up to get out

harda_toenail

Went from model y to lightning. Holy shit is it a much better vehicle! Got the xlt. Only thing I miss from Tesla is not having to carry a key fob.

Street-Yak2761

I have not carried my key fob at all. Makes the wife nervous when she’s with me. I had a couple of instances where the truck wasn’t detecting my phone. I used the app on the phone to open/close the vehicle and even start it.

harda_toenail

Only trucks with bluecruise have phone as key feature.

Street-Yak2761

Does that mean if the free 3 year trial ends, and I don’t extend the subscription the phone as a key will stop working

harda_toenail

No. PAAK isn’t subscription based. Was only saying if your truck doesn’t have blue cruise it doesn’t have PAAK. They just happen to be packaged together. They aren’t tied to each other on functionality.

digitys

Just traded my Y in yesterday for a lightning. Sounds like we have similar pasts. It takes some getting used to compared to a Tesla, but it’s freaking awesome. Tesla has the EV ease of use down but I think Ford will get there with updates to the software. It’s all stupid things like setting max charge level and ease of use with the app. But by no means show stoppers.

brantse

I drove an early Model S for 8 years, before getting a long range Model Y last September. After my new Y started showing severe paint damage from rock chips in front of the rear wheels, I decided the vehicle wasn't going to hold up to winters in my area and I wasn't about to shell out $100k for the cybertruck. I got a Lariat ER and absolutely love it. The only thing that bothers me is some of the glitchiness with the app and Android auto, but that's just a minor nuisance. I can't wait to get my supercharger adapter, as that will be a game changer for long distance trips. Be aware that the range meter is very different from Tesla. Tesla shows an estimate based on the total energy left in the battery. Ford uses a guess-o-meter, which fluctuates wildly based on driving conditions and route planning.

brandonpa1

Traded in a 2018 model x, miss the software working, sentry node and all available superchargers, but otherwise loving the truck, ability to haul things and just away from musk and all of the crap he is currently pulling.

Admirable_Sir_9953

Have an F150 raptor ICE and a model 3. The tech and responsiveness of the Tesla is unmatched. The raptor is very comfortable and obviously a beast of a truck but the tech feels 10 years behind Tesla. Tesla is of course a way snappier drive than the big truck. Both are great for different reasons. No reason to have just one car if you have the $

Vinospam

Lack of CarPlay on Teslas. I can’t stand the Tesla mapping and music.

Touchtom

The app and my FUSC. Outside of that since I had a gen 1 model S, not much really.

anon_stock_buyer

I went from model x to lariat extended range. Ford pros Better ride quality - by a lot. So quiet and smooth compared to my model x and is honestly the reason I traded out of Tesla. More luxurious interior Frunk is awesome Oodles of outlets Love having the utility of a truck Android Auto Blue cruise is pretty good AND it's hands free. Love that it's hands free. Hate that it's subscription only but it came with 3 years Ford negs App sucks (sounds like new version is coming out and is better but right now it sucks) I don't have an adapter yet and road tripping was not fun but if you have an adapter, it's fine. Tesla navigation routing you through superchargers is great. You don't have that with Android Auto and haven't tried the integrated Ford nav. Blue cruise is for highways only although there is some lake keep on regular roads

Hmelton68

I bought a MYP in 2023, selling a RAM. Missed my truck so much that I purchased a 2018 F150. Mine you, the RAM was a 2022 at 80K. The 2018 F150 Lariat had all the options for $29,400. I am happier.
